PICKS OF THE WEEK
OFEGE- TRY AND LOVE LP (academy lps, usa)
15.98usd/10.96gbp/12.34eur/1565jpy (approx)
*The first release from Brooklyn ny's academy records re-issue label academy lps… The mega rare and unbelievably great African psychedelic full length by Ofege would set anyone back some serious cash even in the pre-hard times era of today and we won't even get into the condition of African LPs! Ofege were all high school students who cut this record with some lead guitar help from Mr. Berkley Jones (Guitarist of Blo) so there's some heavy duty fuzz damage throughout the record. This pushes all the right buttons all the time. Perfect.
KURT VILE- CONSTANT HITMAKER LP (woodsist, usa)
17.98usd/12.33gbp/13.89eur/1761jpy (approx)
*finally in stock, the vinyl version from Philadelphia lo-fi bedroom psych singer/songwriter Kurt Vile. Originally released on cd in 2008 on Gulcher Records. "kurt vile is the nom de plume of philadelphian kurt vile (!) whose shimmering home recordings reflect the artists admiration of everything from delta blues to the minimalist agro of suicide, the downer psyche of 39 clocks as well as the skiffle hum of strapping fieldhands. in other words, a real globe trotter. kurt has shared bills...as well as wiped the floor...with the likes of blues control, pink reason, clockcleaner, times new viking and magik markers, to name a few. this is his debut release. lend him your ears." - - tom lax, siltbreeze. "its like when u wake from a long and glorious slumber, then u realize u dont have to go to work, then u fall back into long and glorious slumber. kv-brand folk pop psyche to make chicks cry & blow maleminds as well...this gulcher collection compiles some of my best home recordings from all over the kv map and one studio smash hit freeway (track 1). jam it! it is the dopest!! ok, peace!!" - kurt vile, on the kv sound & constant hitmaker.
PUNK AND POST-PUNK
V/A- THE WORLDS LOUSY WITH IDEAS: VOLUME 8 LP (almost ready, usa)
18.98usd/13.01gbp/14.66eur/1859jpy (approx)
*The eighth installment in the Worlds Lousy compilation series abandons the 7" format in favor of the full twelve. Pretty much everyone worth talking about in 09 is on here, as the lp collects exclusive tracks by blank dogs, Vivian girls, tyvek, oh sees, sic alps, times new viking, intelligence, pink reason and guinea worms. Beautiful, silkscreened covers with art by Cassie of the Vivian Girls. (Supposedly there will be nine different screened covers, with artwork by each band. This first round being done by the aforementioned Vivian Girl).
THE BEETS- SPIT IN THE FACE OF PEOPLE WHO DON’T WANT TO BE COOL LP (captured tracks, usa)
18.98usd/13.01gbp/14.66eur/1859jpy (approx)
*Debut twelve-track LP from these proud sons of Jackson Heights, Queens. Sprung from seemingly nowhere to playing constantly in Brooklyn. Shades of Los Mockers, Chicos Electricos, pre 65 Stones, early Ramones and Shimmy-Disc era Daniel Johnston. I saw these guys almost start a riot at a Fashion Week event and then proceed to party down with Mickey Rourke. Absolutely amazing. Beautiful full-color sleeve by Matt Volz.
BITTERS- WOODEN GLOVE 12” (captured tracks, usa)
16.98usd/11.64gbp/13.11eur/1663jpy (approx)
*The Bitters is a new band that features Young Governor who has been playing in Fucked Up lately. The Bitters is more of his pop band with the vocals of Aerin Fogel front and center (for good reason.) The first of what will be many very desired records.
BLANK DOGS- SECONDS 12” (captured tracks, usa)
16.98usd/11.64gbp/13.11eur/1663jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Four new noisy, echo-filled pop songs from Mr. Blankdog. Limited edition vinyl comes in a silk-screened sleeve.
BLESSURE GRAVE- LEARN TO LOVE THE ROPE 12” (captured tracks, usa)
16.98usd/11.64gbp/13.11eur/1663jpy (approx)

WOODS- WOODS 7” (captured tracks, usa)
6.98usd/4.79gbp/5.39eur/683jpy (approx)
*woods are a real band. These are two of two of their best songs.
COLD CAVE- THE TREES GREW EMOTIONS 12” (dais, usa)
16.98usd/11.64gbp/13.11eur/1663jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Dark minimal synth from Wesley Eisold (Heartworm Press, Some Girls). The Trees Grew Emotions is an uptempo anthem bordering on Italio Disco while remaining to be pure and minimal, while the B-side delivers two pure dark and brooding addictive synth cuts with deep vocals for your 4am dancefloor. In the vein of early Echo West and Absolute Body Control.
ENSEMBLE PITTORESQUE- THE ART OF BEING LP (minimal wave, usa)
27.98usd/19.18gbp/21.61eur/2740jpy (approx)
*This album was originally submitted to Polydor (NL) in 1982, but they didn't find it commercial enough, and asked the band to come up with some material for a single release instead. Ensemble Pittoresque decided that they didn't want to compromise, and thus went on to release recordings on their own Clogsontronics label. The songs have been restored and mastered from the original tape, presented here as an LP entitled "The Art of Being". The music speaks for itself. With impeccable song writing, and heartfelt vocals; there is a true timeless feel to their music. Sound samples are here. Limited to 500 numbered copies with insert, 180 gram vinyl.
LINEAR MOVEMENT- ON THE SCREEN LP (minimal wave, usa)
27.98usd/19.18gbp/21.61eur/2740jpy (approx)
*The thirteenth release on Minimal Wave is Linear Movement's 'On The Screen' LP, a collection of songs originally slated for release in 1983. Linear Movement is Belgian mastermind Peter Bonne (A Split-Second, Twilight Ritual, Autumn) joined by Peter Koutstaal, and Lieve Van Steerteghem on vocals. Some tracks appear on the exquisite Pulse Music cassette (released by the Micrart Group) while the rest are previously unreleased. Linear Movement was featured on V/A The Lost Tapes LP with their highly acclaimed The Game, described as an "unstoppable pop song". Due to so much interest in this song, we decided a full LP needed to be released and so we present it to you: hand-numbered, limited pressing on 180 gram vinyl, and accompanied by a large glossy postcard photograph of the band live. These songs are perfect for the dance floor and for home listening too!
STEREO- SOMEWHERE IN THE NIGHT LP (minimal wave, usa)
27.98usd/19.18gbp/21.61eur/2740jpy (approx)
*The fifteenth release on Minimal Wave, presented in a printed jacket of original artwork, is Stereo's 'Somewhere In The Night' LP. Two of the tracks: Somewhere In The Night and No More first appeared on their 12" releases in 1982 and 1983 respectively, and are now highly sought after. Both tracks became cult dance floor hits, and received radio airplay in Europe and the US throughout the 80's until now. The rest of the LP brings together the French band's best studio recordings from 1982-1985,. The LP is pressed on 180 gram vinyl and includes a large heavy card insert with photos of the band. Limited to 999 hand-numbered copies.
SUDETEN CRECHE- ARE KISSES OUT OF FASHION? MLP (minimal wave, usa)
24.98usd/17.13gbp/19.29eur/2447jpy (approx)
*The fourteenth release on Minimal Wave is a 12" EP by UK band, Sudeten Creche. The ep includes their cult song Are Kisses Out Of Fashion? (originally released on the 1982 compilation ep Europe in the Year Zero ), as well as an unreleased version of Kindergarten (the original version was released on Illuminated Records in 1983). The songs are from their original tape reels, and they're pure electropop bliss. Release limited to 500 hand-numbered copies pressed on 180 gram vinyl.
V/A- THE FOUND TAPES LP (minimal wave, usa)
27.98usd/19.18gbp/21.61eur/2740jpy (approx)
*A compilation of North American Minimal Wave '81-'87. The Found Tapes is a follow up to The Lost Tapes compilation of European Minimal Wave '81-'86. It features previously released, rare tracks, as well as some unreleased tracks from Futurisk, Iron Curtain, Deo Toy, Experimental Products, Mark Lane, Ohama, Crash Course In Science, Dark Day, Craig Sibley, and Tara Cross. This release represents synth bands from the North American scene during that 80's period, some of them you may already know and if not will soon surely love. Thanks to everyone involved in making this happen. Limited to 500 numbered copies with insert, 180 gram vinyl.
BLANK DOGS- DIANA (THE HERALD) LP (sacred bones, usa)
18.98usd/13.01gbp/14.66eur/1859jpy (approx)
*repressed… For the quickly ascending career of the BLANK DOGS, this 12-inch marks another ringer, and already their fourth release of 2007, clearly showing an impeccable work ethic with no signs of stopping. Each record sounding more unique and far out than the last, this brand new 12-inch EP on Sacred Bones shows the Blank Dogs evolving into a full-on goth-gone wrong killing machine, yet they dont need to get nasty. The effects the vocals reverberate through will cause instant nausea when exposed to the elderly and the weak, yet underneath lie those keenly disguised pop hooks that stick with you long after the record stops. If Death Pop was ever really a term, the Blank Dogs now own it, yet their wrong wave wanderings can entertain fringe psych-heads just the same, hence their growing appeal across genre boundaries. -Victim Of Time.
BLANK DOGS- THE FIELDS MLP (woodsist, usa)
17.98usd/12.33gbp/13.89eur/1761jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Blank Dogs are actually singular: it's the insanely prolific one-man Brooklyn-based band of Mr. Blank Dog. We don't know too much about the biography of the guy behind the bedroom new-wave pop/punk and he's usually covering his face with masks or bedspreads, but that's fine. The aura of anonymity allows you to focus on the sounds -- and, really, he might be releasing a ton of things, but there's definitely a higher jam-to-crap ratio. It's like Joy Division vocal lines with The Cure's synth and guitar melodies filtered through ancient submerged keyboards and eroded recording equipment. And that voice? All the feedback in the world can't hide his knack for melody. Blank Dogs have been making plenty of rumbles in the noisier and more secretive outposts of the underground (half his discography's sold out), but Troubleman Unlimited's just repressed his very recommended full-length On Two Sides (on yellow vinyl in an edition of 500) and In The Red's releasing a 20-song double LP (or single CD) called Under And Under . It's all new material. He's also playing his first shows in NYC, so if you want to take a peek, you can. All this to say: seems like Blank Dogs is on his way out of the basement. --Stereogum
WOODS- SONGS OF SHAME LP (woodsist, usa)
17.98usd/12.33gbp/13.89eur/1761jpy (approx)
*The fourth full length by Woods, Songs of Shame, rips deeper with both 90-second and 10-minute forays into skeletal psychedelia. This is not to say the idiosyncratic songwriting style & vocalizing of Jeremy Earl is not present in spades but expanded, colored, and twisted into a tie-dye of soundscapes. Having toured incessantly over the last 12 months as a four piece (Jarvis Taveniere, G. Lucas Crane & Kevin Morby round out the band), many of the songs on Shame benefit from having been road worn, windblown, and deeply grooved.
INDIE
AZITA- HOW WILL YOU? LP (drag city, usa)
17.98usd/12.33gbp/13.89eur/1761jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… How Will You? is halls and mirrors of sound and voice, sour and sweet, sense and nonsense, implying and pointing the way, crushing to crescendo before starting again in a different way, in another song. Each successive stroke eventually paints a portrait, but something is missing. There's a space for you there. How Will You? isn't complete until you enter the room. You listening completes the picture. Throughout How Will You? Azita speaks personally, as people do -- seemingly simple, but just as you think you've got her pegged, a lyrical phrase takes off and a lovely melodic twist turns you back into the maze. As the album spins on, you're tangled in her private code, receiving stories in delusively linear fashion. The song is over and you're left with wild beauty, wry humor, florid sounds and the sting of urgently intoned words. You've never heard personal-sounding music like this presented with such persistent opacity. Azita is kind of one of a kind. How Will You? is a collection of songs that range from sun-bright and poppy to deep-focus, torrential. Azita stuck to straight-ahead voicings in her chords to bring heaviness to the sound, working with bassist Matt Lux and drummer John Herndon to arrange her songs with the strength of a rock and roll band throughout the album. The arrangements were augmented with her own guitar playing, as well as Sam Wagster's supernatural pedal steel parts and Emmett Kelly's classic guitar licks. Even in the midst of raging and stomping, the effect, as stated above, is painterly. How Will You? is compelling pop music, approaching in fun, with beats, and then sinking deep and growing within you.
BONNIE 'PRINCE' BILLY- BEWARE LP (drag city, usa)
16.98usd/11.64gbp/13.11eur/1663jpy (approx)
*Breaking through the dirt and shooting upward into our atmosphere is a new variety of exotic Bonnie 'Prince' Billy plant. Stronger. Stinkier. It blooms in low light and cold but thrives in the sun as well, showing enticing spots and eating small creatures as they wander into its jaws. They had it coming, they were weak.... and you're next! Beware. Though Beware shares spit with its immediate predecessor, Lie Down In The Light, its reach is longer, its arches more grandiose. Where fiddle and steel contribute their rustic timbre alongside guitars and voices, a thickening thud of low tone rolls beneath, giving the record a bottom that's fun to watch bounce in new clothes. This intensifies the air and heralds Beware as Bonnie's most ambidextrous record to date -- even more so than The Letting Go! A listen or two through and you too may conclude that this could also be the great Bonnie 'Prince' Billy contempo-country record -- though, as always, the 'Prince' goes his own special way, even when climbing the charts with brawny arms and classic titles like 'I Don't Belong To Anyone,' 'You Can't Hurt Me Now,' and 'I Am Goodbye.' Though the title -- and catalog number! -- portends horror, Beware is a much more measured exploration of the soul's frailty and the sorry state of human relationships than your typical, everyday, bleaked-out, all-and-nothing roots rock platter. Song titles suggest half of a heated dialogue, perhaps just one side of a super-apocalypto phone call. Yet, there's humor here as well, some of it too cute to call black. Lyrically, domestic ripostes are mixed with I-thou asides, statements of lusty selfhood and subtlety in between the lines, examining culpability and the need for release and rebellion, if you must know. Basically, if you haven't learned already, love goes down mazy, anfractuous paths, on some days giving rise to irritations -- both spiritual and physical -- and the difficult consideration of an alternative fate. Sometimes all you want to do is fuck. Then there are the times of fun, laughter and learning, and the sudden appreciation of your partner, your only friend. And with all these things in hand, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy says Beware.
BONNIE 'PRINCE' BILLY- CURSED SLEEP 12” (drag city, usa)
9.98usd/6.84gbp/7.71eur/977jpy (approx)
*drag city back catalog title in stock for the first time… The title track of this single is smooth, elegant and assured, with every bit of tangled hair in place. Swaggering in vocally with a hitherto unknown quality and with a gang of string players in tow (the long-haired kind!), Bonnie receives harmonies alternately cute, cool and ballsy from one of his (and our) favorite singers, Dawn 'The Faun' McCarthy. Sweet melody abounds, as it should for an advance look into a mind-blowing new album. And the rest -- Eyes flashing, 'The Signifying Wolf' shuffles discordant through a snake-pit of questions, declamations and undulations -- a dance we're all familiar with, so grab a butt-plug and jump on in. The conga line forms to the rear. As always, when it's all through, there's 'God's Small Song' to be sung -- red-eyed and feeling no pain.
BONNIE 'PRINCE' BILLY- STRANGE FORM OF LIFE 12” (drag city, usa)
12.98usd/8.90gbp/10.02eur/1271jpy (approx)
*drag city back catalog title in stock for the first time… Another haunting chapter from The Letting Go, 'Strange Form of Life' is highlighted for your edification. The gauzy webs of this song gleam with clarity divorced from its siblings on The Letting Go; the music made by Emmett Kelly, Dawn McCarthy, Paul Oldham and Jim White shines all the brighter. In stark relief are the three tracks from a Daytrotter session, done during the Bonny Billy free tour of Midwestern states in August 2006. In the wide-open spaces of Iowa, the ten year-old songs 'New Partner,' and 'The Sun Highlights the Lack in Each,' are delivered in solo performances of Bonnie with guitar, both finding new life in the process. Also delivered is a pre-release version of 'The Seedling,' bristling with the energy found in the layers of The Letting Go version. The appearance of an electric guitar in this ostensible 'solo' performance only adds to the mystery and menace of the song.
PALACE BROTHERS- THERE IS NO ONE WHAT WOULD TAKECARE OF YOU LP (drag city, usa)
11.98usd/8.21gbp/9.25eur/1173jpy (approx)
*drag city back catalog title in stock for the first time… first classic album repressed. includes the tracks: Idle Hands Are the Devil's Playthings, Long Before I Tried to Stay Healthy for You, The Cellar Song, (I Was Drunk at the) Pulpit, There is No-One What Will Take Care of You, O Lord Are You in Need?, Merida, King Me, I Had A Good Mother and Father, Riding O Paul.
PALACE- DAYS IN THE WAKE LP (drag city, usa)
11.98usd/8.21gbp/9.25eur/1173jpy (approx)
*drag city back catalog title in stock for the first time… second classic album repressed. includes the tracks: You Will Miss Me When I Burn, Pushkin, Come a Little Dog, I Send My Love to You, Meaulnes, No More Workhorse Blues, All is Grace, Whither Thou Goest, (Thou Without) Partner,
I Am A Cinematographer.
PALACE MUSIC- VIVA LAST BLUES LP (drag city, usa)
15.98usd/10.96gbp/12.34eur/1565jpy (approx)
*drag city back catalog title in stock for the first time… another classic palace album repressed, Featuring Will Oldham, Sebadoh's Jason Loewenstein, and recorded by Steve Albini. The Palace team has put out many a record, but as far as accessible and slightly upbeat musical ruminations go, Viva Last Blues certainly sees the players near the top of their game. Things are a little thicker and dirtier than on the more laid-back acoustic records this prolific artist has put out, but the rock approach adds worlds to the delivery and creates a powerful palette for the equally important lyrics. Oldham is a truly underrated American talent, and this is among his best work, so take the time to find it.
MATT SWEENEY & BONNIE "PRINCE" BILLY- SUPERWOLF LP (drag city, usa)
15.98usd/10.96gbp/12.34eur/1565jpy (approx)
*drag city back catalog title in stock for the first time… This record, Superwolf, is credited to Matt Sweeney and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy. Bonnie challenged Matt to write music to a series of song lyrics, and this collaboration was done over some months, and included live shows in London, New Orleans, Brooklyn, and Baltimore. The two retired to Paul Oldham's Rove Studios to lay the songs down. They enlisted the help of drummer Peter Townsend, and vocalist Sue Schofield dropped in for a brief cameo.
BILL CALLAHAN- SOMETIMES I WISH WE WERE AN EAGLE LP (drag city, usa)
16.98usd/11.64gbp/13.11eur/1663jpy (approx)
*Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle is the new Bill Callahan record. And at the risk of being redundant, Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle is about as beautiful an album as you can expect to hear sung circa 2009. True, it's early yet... but wait 'til you hear this record. Unfolding like a first view of paradise, then a slightly less ecstatic second view of paradise and then finally a glance back over your shoulder at that stupid paradise bullshit, Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle surveys a landscape that grows organically, like the time two people spend together -- or the time one person spends alone (with another). One way or another, it's awfully pretty -- something's clearly making Bill feel like a natural man. And high in the saddle, with a pouch of Big League Chew and nine sweet new tunes in tow, he's riding herd over a diverse bunch of sounds by top-notch players. Sure, there's guitar, keyboards and drums, just like there's always been -- but arranger Brian Beattie brought some old friends back into the picture: violins and French horns. It's been awhile since Bill's gone out dressed up in strings and brass, but they still look good on him -- better than ever, in fact! Plus, recording in the big state of Texas has given Bill Callahan a panoramic sound-screen, filled with verdant and sparkling sounds, all of which allow him access to the depths of expression, allowing a gentle and stirring view of that which we call 'soul'. Singing as personal as ever while still spinning wild yarns and melodic guitar fictions, Bill Callahan's on an idyll we hope won't ever end. We can't grant his wish -- but we sure can love Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle.
BILL CALLAHAN- WOKE ON A WHALEHEART LP (drag city, usa)
15.98usd/10.96gbp/12.34eur/1565jpy (approx)
*drag city back catalog title in stock for the first time… You could say this is Bill Callahan's debut album. Although he's sired a dozen albums under the name of Smog, he has laid that name to rest and, well, Woke on a Whaleheart. Another debut. With the same maverick spirit of, say, a Nilsson or a Cat Stevens, Bill Callahan has made an album that is born of no school of music other than what is in his heart and soul. Boasting the propulsive, glittering and classically pretty arrangements of Neil Michael Hagerty, this album manages to bypass the trends of the modern day while shunning retro entrapments. With a mix of gospel backing vocals by Deani Pugh-Flemmings of the Olivet Baptist Church, the incendiary guitar work of Pete Denton, and the honeyed violins of Elizabeth Warren, the music on this album touches on gospel, tough pop and American Light Opera.
SMOG- JULIUS CAESAR LP (drag city, usa)
11.98usd/8.21gbp/9.25eur/1173jpy (approx)

SMOG- RED APPLE FALLS LP (drag city, usa)
11.98usd/8.21gbp/9.25eur/1173jpy (approx)

SMOG- KNOCK KNOCK LP (drag city, usa)
11.98usd/8.21gbp/9.25eur/1173jpy (approx)
*drag city back catalog title in stock for the first time… The only thing familiar about Knock Knock is the now familiar Smog sensation of being somehow completely unfamiliar! At this point in his illustrious career, there certain styles he feels comfortable with. But who'd've guessed that super-sexy space cowboy would be one of them? Several ballads on Knock Knock are of the spirit of Bill Callahan...a record with a divide of hard and soft ones, a record with a torn curtain inviting you to look inside. It is a real-life opera, a story told in song -- the story of a kid named Smog. A real tour de force.
SMOG- DONGS OF SEVOTION 2LP (drag city, usa)
17.98usd/12.33gbp/13.89eur/1761jpy (approx)
*drag city back catalog title in stock for the first time… Sensual to the extreme, from its opening tango to the very last waltz. It's classic entertainment, dipping its little beak into every kind of pop you can imagine. Like mostly the kind that hasn't really been heard yet, you know? Of course, Dongs, as we call it around the Mensa's room, wouldn't be a a classic without the best of the 70s, 80s, and 90s on display, so of course, they are. Not that we can tell. As the man says, if you can remember the 70s, 80s, and 90s, you weren't really there. And we definitely weren't.
SMOG- RAIN ON LENS LP (drag city, usa)
15.98usd/10.96gbp/12.34eur/1565jpy (approx)
*drag city back catalog title in stock for the first time… Making a trip to see an old friend and all they can talk about is how they never see you because you never come to where they are although you are there right then and then you talk to them after you've left and they tell you they wish they'd just enjoyed themselves while you were there and when are you coming again? You'll notice in the text of this LP that Smog is now (Smog). Note to self. The uninitiated listeners will hear this LP as a greatest hits package, sending them scurrying to find the record that each song is from. Note to self: They're all from Rain on Lens by (Smog).
SMOG- ACCUMULATION: NONE LP (drag city, usa)
15.98usd/10.96gbp/12.34eur/1565jpy (approx)
*drag city back catalog title in stock for the first time… Accumulation: None is your (Smog) singles compilation. Actually, truth be told, only ten of the twelve songs on Accumulation: None have appeared on 7" vinyl. It wouldn't be a proper singles collection without single sides plus other perks in store for you -- which is why there are other perks in store for you when you acquire Accumulation: None for your personal collection of singles collections. For instance, six of the songs have never been released in the United States. Two of the songs were broadcast on the radio, then released as b-sides. And this in faraway England -- a virtual wasteland!
SMOG- SUPPER LP (drag city, usa)
15.98usd/10.96gbp/12.34eur/1565jpy (approx)
*drag city back catalog title in stock for the first time… Slipping and gliding, your hero has returned. (Smog) is back in the building. With him is his newest record. But he?s not going to sing it for you, no. Instead, he's going to play it for you. And so, with a press of a button the new (Smog) album, Supper. Supper will strike some of you as easy-listening (Smog) which is simply proof that you (Smog) fans out there have hardened over the years. Sure, Supper features soft steel guitars, female harmony vocals, fluttering guitars, a sentimental ode to 'Our Anniversary', and more heart-warming things packed into its 43 plus minutes, but honestly it's still (Smog), isn't it? That means sharp observations, a steady stream of humorous spectres, discomfiting intimacy and other heart-warming things packed into nine melody-filled tunes.
SCOUT NIBLETT- IT'S TIME MY BELOVED 7” (drag city, usa)
5.98usd/4.10gbp/4.62eur/585jpy (approx)
*Like heat rushing in the door, Scout Niblett is suddenly in the room again. Her familiar keening moan opines, 'It's time I danced again,' and the pressure intensifies. 'It's Time' unfolds slowly, doing the grind, working her body and yours. It's better than Bikram yoga, and twice as hot. Flip the platter and you get 'My Beloved,' a grooving, stop-start hip-bumper, with the drums break-beating forward in sway with Scout's wall of burning guitars. As always, Scout's the player behind all the sounds on the record. This one was done at home while a foot of snow crept around outside her front door, providing the isolation required to do all the playing and recording and not go completely mad. Just slightly mad will get the job done every time. This is the first Scout Niblett record to be released on Drag City and we're glad to have her eerie presence on our side.
ROYAL TRUX- ROYAL TRUX LP (drag city, usa)
17.98usd/12.33gbp/13.89eur/1761jpy (approx)
*restocked… First vinyl pressing since the original 1988 Royal Records LP issue. First time on Drag City.
ROYAL TRUX- TWIN INFINITIVES 2LP (drag city, usa)
22.98usd/15.75gbp/17.75eur/2251jpy (approx)
*restocked… First vinyl pressing of Twin Infinitives since the original LP issue in December 1990. Gatefold sleeve. "Neil Hagerty: We wanted to let things happen. I took all the tapes I had: rehearsals, studio stuff that survived, other random shit like shortwave recording etc and cut that together in a long collage. Then I broke that into short segments arbitrarily, about the length of a good rock song. We dumped those segments onto multitrack, called them songs, and just started putting little patchwork bits here and there for the next year and a half or whatever it was.
SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE- RTZ 3LP (drag city, usa)
22.98usd/15.75gbp/17.75eur/2251jpy (approx)
*restocked… triple vinyl epic called rtz (named after the button on a Tascam 484 that 'returns to zero') fashions several lesser-known pieces from Six Organs of Admittance's early years into a massive prismatic arc, colossal and organic like some wonder of the ancient world. How could it be otherwise? Even when existing as only one half of a record, as many of these pieces once did (and still do, somewhere), Mr. 6OOA (Ben Chasny, y'all!) leans into the eternal -- letting the winds of Time scar his face and the light of All There Is burn his skin black. Grandmaster Chas has sacrificed the body for his music time and again over the years. RTZ is an iridescent chimera infull flight, viewed through stained glass. Cataloging these early non-album excursions requires a bit of leg-(and mind)work. RTZ travels back to the dawn of this century to locate 'Resurrection,' half of a Time-Lag split 12' with Charalambides. 'Warm Earth, Which I've Been Told' is half of a Mental Telemetry split CD with Vibracathedral Orchestra and Magic Carpithans from 2003. 'You Can Always See the Sun,' was part of Three Lobed Recordings.' 'Purposeful Availments' subscription CD series in 2002. And 'Nightly Trembling' was released way back in 1999 in an edition of 33 copies, all given away for free! That's some spiritual shit right there. Combined with a never-before-released extended piece called 'Punish the Chasm with Wings' from pre-millennial days and you've got yourself a deep, DEEP box set. Rich with excursions to exotic musical climes and rhythmic with prayerful chants from the dark shadows of the earth, RTZ uses strings and bells, riffs both warm and icy, glowing lead guitars, massed voices and the pure, open air for its mantras and rituals. As the title alludes, these old sounds were forged in that bastion of personal expression, the four-track recorder. When a man can record a few feet from his bed, he becomes more inclined to render his nocturnal intuitions. And when that man is Ben Chasny, he can use those remastered (but still good and dusty) early recordings to attain the ultimate goal. We should all be so lucky. Oh wait, we are -- now that we've got RTZ forever, and more.
SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE- SHELTER FROM THE ASH LP (drag city, usa)
16.98usd/11.64gbp/13.11eur/1663jpy (approx)
*restocked… Shelter From The Ash features a most fluid combination of electric and acoustic Six Organs of Admittance styles. Chasny went into the studio with the songs both in his mind and also demoed out, a different way of working than in previous sessions. Sure, improvisations were still a big part of the sound; within the song structures, they create dynamic sparks from the other side of the inspiration. Additionally (if you must know), standard tuning played a part for the first time in history -- but don't worry, this doesn't mean that Six Organs of Admittance has come in from the drone-storm -- far from it! The man who was once 'Torn By Wolves' in an unknown key is now 'Coming To Get You,' no matter what it takes -- with a tuning any man could play, but few would use as he does. The session was conducted in the glamorous confines of San Francisco's Louder Studios, where so many bands have had their hard and heavy essence redefined. Six Organs of Admittance was no exception. Additionally, the session featured such luminaries as The Magik Markers' Elisa Ambrogio, The Fucking Champs' Tim Green and Chasny's Comets On Fire bandmate Noel Harmonson and gadabout-to-the-stars Matt Sweeney pitching in. Six Organs of Admittance has been a collaborative ground in the past, and what happened here is what always happens: an organic oneness, a record very comfortable in its many skins.
SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE- SCHOOL OF THE FLOWER LP (drag city, usa)
15.98usd/10.96gbp/12.34eur/1565jpy (approx)
*restocked… This is the first Six Organs of Admittance record to be recorded in a studio. No computers were harmed (or used) during the making of this record. Free-jazz sensation Chris Corsano contributes drums with the greatest sympathy. It's a fantastic new album, as just a fraction of a listen will reveal. The highly prolific Six Organs of Admittance returns with a sixth or seventh album, School of the Flower.
LIGHT PSYCHEDELIC HARMONY
THE FREE DESIGN- YOU COULD BE BORN AGAIN LP (light in the attic, usa)
14.98usd/10.27gbp/11.57eur/1467jpy (approx)
*light in the attic back catalog title in stock for the first time… After hitting the charts with their 1967 debut Kites Are Fun, You Could be Born Again is the sound of a band discovering what they are capable of, amid the excitement of what is to come. Beautiful and elaborate originals intertwine with classic '60s pop hits, arranged in such a way that they could literally claim ownership. Duke Ellington's celestial "I Like the Sunrise" takes on a life of its own, dazzling the listener and reminding one of Gil Evans, while original tunes such as "I Found Love" unearth Chris Dedrick writing one of the great moments in pop, though history doesn't know it. The album's closing number entitled "An Elegy" sees The Free Design at its starkest, musically and lyrically, in the group's entire career, serving as a powerful tribute to Dwight Dedrick, who died in Vietnam the same year of this release.
THE FREE DESIGN- HEAVEN/EARTH LP (light in the attic, usa)
14.98usd/10.27gbp/11.57eur/1467jpy (approx)
*light in the attic back catalog title in stock for the first time… The Free Design, those oft-overlooked legends of '60s soft pop, drew inspiration from such diverse musicians as Duke Ellington and The Mamas & The Papas. Listen to the band's acclaimed third album, Heaven/Earth, to experience a sound that has awed the in-the-know for more than three decades. The New York-based family band - siblings Bruce, Chris, Sandy & younger sister Ellen - recorded Heaven/Earth in 1969 for acclaimed producer Enoch Light's Project 3 label. The album is quintessential Free Design with "a sweet sound that caressed the aural taste buds and floated deliciously," in the words of rock historian Kingsley Abbott, "daring listeners to follow it." Chris Dedrick's imaginative lyrics of both innocence and irony, and the band's tight vocals and dreamy enthusiasm, shine on "2002 - A Hit Song," "Dorian Benediction," and the album's other delights.
THE FREE DESIGN- STARS/TIME/BUBBLES/LOVE LP (light in the attic, usa)
14.98usd/10.27gbp/11.57eur/1467jpy (approx)
*light in the attic back catalog title in stock for the first time… Originally released in 1970 on Enoch Light's Project 3 label, Stars/Time/Bubbles/Love served as The Free Design's turning point: mixing the group's timeless elements of soft-psych with a dose of funk! In the words of Free Design historian Robbie Baldock, "Stars is where The Free Design gets funky"! With Stars/Time/Bubbles/Love, the group's fourth album, chief Free Design songwriter Chris Dedrick continued to develop his experimental approach to composing, songwriting, and arranging, while beginning to introduce his love of jazz, gospel singing, and the Motown sound. Even the Jackson Pollack inspired-album art showcased a change of direction for the Dedricks, illustrating the group's contention that, with this album, they were pushing The Free Design sound out in completely new directions.
THE FREE DESIGN- ONE BY ONE LP (light in the attic, usa)
14.98usd/10.27gbp/11.57eur/1467jpy (approx)
*light in the attic back catalog title in stock for the first time… The Free Design return to their roots as a trio, and get bit by the Motown bug, with brilliant funk riffs and lush string arrangements.
Excerpt from CD Liner Notes (by The Free Design's Chris & Sandy Dedrick):
Sandy: I can't help but acknowledge these musicians that we were able to perform with and record with. It's so exciting even just to watch them. But to watch them and hear them... it's just amazing.
Chris: It is. Names like Randy Brecker, whose playing all that hot trumpet stuff and double-tracked jazz stuff at the end with the sort of daring rhythms and turn-arounds and so on. Bob Mann played the guitar solo, Andy Mason was on bass, and Billy Cobham, who's another big name in the jazz world, played drums.
Sandy: Well, I remember first moving to New York before The Free Design even really started, and my dad got us into a recording session of Count Basie's band, and honestly, I can never forget the way it made me feel. I had no idea we would ever be singing with musicians of that caliber. And a year later we were! It was just amazing.
Chris: There's vitality and there's something that happens in the synergy of the musicians being together that impregnates the recording. And I think that's a big part of the interest in this music, not only whatever freshness or ideas that made us unique, but that we were recording in an era when musicians actually looked at each other and listened to each other and had to get it right all together. There was a focus and a camaraderie that has been minimized in many recording situations.
THE FREE DESIGN- THERE IS A SONG LP (light in the attic, usa)
14.98usd/10.27gbp/11.57eur/1467jpy (approx)
*light in the attic back catalog title in stock for the first time… The Free Design’s beautiful ultra-rare final album, recorded in 1972 on the small New York label Ambrotype.
Excerpt from CD Liner Notes (by The Free Design’s Chris Dedrick):
Chris: There Is a Song came about as a result of my dad getting a deal with a small label in Rochester, New York, called Ambrotype. We did do some of the recording in Rochester; I think “A Child is Born,” “I Want to be There,” and perhaps one other song.
The occasion to do this album coincided with my having moved to Canada, and some of the songs were really an indication of a change that was happening for me at that point, somewhat of disillusionment with the New York scene at the time. Not so much the in-studio, but just the city itself, and what it took to try to live in or near that city. And as I looked for some alternatives, I was invited by a friend, David Green, who had been lured up to Toronto to be the chief engineer and to help with the finishing touches of building Manta Sound, which for many years was my favorite studio in Toronto. And while visiting again, I liked it a lot, so I decided to come up to Toronto, after my stint in the Air Force, after living in Maryland. Within about a year, I met some musicians, some of whom were philosophy students and one in particular, Kenneth Mills, became my mentor and co-writer for a lot of my music.
Soon after, my sisters came up and visited, and we sang at a Christmas party that Dr. Mills had, and within six months after that, sang for him some more. Since we were eager to sort of get off of the plateau that we felt we were on, he was willing to continue to work with us. He began to work on our voices and began to work with us on sort of a level of self-discovery that could free us of some of the personality and egotistical traits that everyone grows up accumulating and that tend to stand in the way of further progression, musically. We had actually let go of our identity as The Free Design and became the core of a vocal group that just sort of grew up around us, and really around this technique for freeing the voice, opening the voice. We started singing without microphones in big halls and started putting on concerts with what became known as the Star-Scape Singers. There Is a Song is a concept album leading up to that period. And some of the songs refer to finding a new way of looking at life - a yoga of the absolute, if you will - that we were starting to learn.
FUNK AND SOUL
BETTY DAVIS- BETTY DAVIS LP (light in the attic, usa)
19.98usd/13.70gbp/15.43eur/1957jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… First official Betty Davis reissues. Mastered from the original tapes (First time since the '70s!). Previously unreleased bonus tracks. Betty recorded some of the finest punk-funk of all time, introduced Miles to Hendrix, and inspired generations. New notes from Oliver Wang (O-Dub/Soul Sides), including Betty's second interview in over 25 years! For the first time, Betty's critically adored first two albums are being lovingly re-mastered from the original master tapes by Light In The Attic Records to sound as ferocious and revolutionary as they did when they first sprung on an unsuspecting world in the early '70s. In recent years, rappers from Ice Cube to Talib Kweli to Ludacris have rhymed over the intensely strong but sensual funk of Betty Davis. One can hardly imagine the genre-busting, culture-crossing musical magic of Outkast, Prince, Erykah Badu, Rick James, The Roots, or even the early Red Hot Chili Peppers without the influence of this R&B pioneer. Ms. Davis's unique story is unlike any other in popular music. Betty wrote the song 'Uptown' for the Chambers Brothers before marrying Miles Davis in the late '60s, influencing him with psychedelic rock, and introducing him to Jimi Hendrix -- personally inspiring the classic jazz-rock fusion album Bitches Brew.
GLOBAL
NELSON ANGELO E JOYCE- NELSON ANGELO E JOYCE CD (discos mariposa, mexico)
17.98usd/12.33gbp/13.89eur/1761jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… special collaboration from 1972 between Brazilian composer Angelo (one of the founding members of Milton Nascimento's "Clube da Esquina," that seminal Brazilian musical community comparable to those of Tropicalia and Bossa Nova in its importance, and his then-wife, the legendary Joyce; Joyce needs no introduction to those who are hip to Brazilian music: suffice to say she is one of that nation’s greatest musicians, a statement that has been borne out throughout her more than thirty years making music. The result of the couple’s great talent and mutual affection is a spacey, psychedelic-tinged acoustic (dare we suggest, acid folk?) album that beautifully combines the talents of these two guitarists, who were very much in love at the time they recorded the songs contained therein. The music is very similar in tone to Nascimento and Lô Borges' "Clube da Esquina" LP from the same year—no surprise once you know that Angelo was playing on that amazing album too! The songs are experimental in structure and instrumentation, using odd time signatures and curious percussion and treatments, yet the whole album still sounds very accessible in a psychedelic 1970's way. Angelo himself describes the album as, “a very delicate, very interesting work by two people in love and full of hope.”
RUBINHO E MAURO ASUNÇAO- PERFEITAMENTE, JUSTAMENTE QUANDO CHEGUEI CD (discos mariposa, mexico)
17.98usd/12.33gbp/13.89eur/1761jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Super underground Brasilian group formed by Mauro Assumpção (voice), Rubinho (violão and keyboards), and friends in Rio De Janeiro in the early 1970's. Their lone album has long had a reputation for its West Coast psychedelic elements (the dreamy introspection of the opening track, for example), although we've also seen it described as soul/funk... a description supported by the funky second track, the bossa/groove of the third track, 'Os olhos', the lilting samba psychedelia of 'Tá tudo aí', as well as a few others on this disc. The end result is compelling, with early Chico Buarque and maybe Black Merda as strange but plausible reference points. One track from the record appears on the Love, Peace & Poetry: Brazil collection.
PAULO BAGUNÇA E A TROPA MALDITA- PAULO BAGUNÇA E A TROPA MALDITA CD (discos mariposa, mexico)
17.98usd/12.33gbp/13.89eur/1761jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… In 1974 the Continental label released an album—Paulo Bagunça e a Tropa Maldita—that left a strong impression on a small underground portion of Brasilian youth. The band name was deliberately provoking: "Bagunça" means mess or confusion (big scandal), while “tropa maldita” means damned, or wicked soldiers. The record has many different styles of songs, with touches of Latin and American funk, Afro-beat, rock and samba, and a heavier emphasis on percussive elements than what was the norm in Brazilian music of the time; check out ‘Grinfa Louca’, with its hallucination-inducing afro beat. The album has a raw and edgy quality in concord with the urgency of the lyrics. In a 1972 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Bagunça said he considered his music "something that comes from deep inside, from the heart, from my caverns, dreams and nightmares". The media at the time were less creative—they called his music "electric pop", an uninspired and inaccurate tag, as it is acoustic guitars and other “actual” instruments that take the lead in every grooving track.
O BANDO- O BANDO CD (discos mariposa, mexico)
17.98usd/12.33gbp/13.89eur/1761jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Reissue of the sole album (1969) from this Brazilian rock super-group formed in São Paulo in the end of the 1960s. O Bando's music blended MPB, regional music and tropicalistic 'psicodelia' -- this engaging combination no doubt thanks to Rogério Duprat, who provides arrangements (along with Damiano Cozzela and Júlio Medaglia). It's a bizarre record, which starts off with a blast of rampaging brass before searing fuzz guitar and disturbing astral keyboard sound effects kick in; the end result sounds like an insane hellfire version of soundtrack/library music of the period. The rest of the album is quirky in the best of all possible ways: some definitive tropicalia moments, including a cover version of Toquinho e Jorge Ben's 'Que Maravilha,' funky break intros to many of the songs, and nice harmonies too, when required. Although they used single names in O Bando, the singer Marisa was Marisa Fossa (she later recorded more material with Rogerio Duprat), Paulino was Paul de Castro who also played in Os Mutantes and other Brazilian rock legends, and Dudu was famous Brazilian drummer Dudu Portes, who has backed Elis Regina, Milton Nascimento, and Gal Costa, among others. Booklet includes a nice essay on (and discography for) Rogério Duprat.
QUINTAL DE CLOROFILA- O MISTÉRIO DOS QUINTAIS CD (discos mariposa, mexico)
17.98usd/12.33gbp/13.89eur/1761jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Psychedelic folk duo, formed by brothers Dimitri and Negendre Arbo. They were part of a set of folk groups comprised of 'gaúchos' (native country people) that appeared in the 1970's, with groups like Almôndegas (minced meat balls), Utopia and Grupo Terra Viva (Alive Earth Band), and continued to exist in the 1980's with groups like Tambo do Bando, Couro, Cordas & Cantos (Leather, Strings & Songs) and Quintal de Clorofila (Garden of Chlorophyll). Most of these bands did not make records. Quintal de Clorofila is one of the few who got to make a record, which was released by the independent label Bobby Som in 1983. For this LP, titled O Mistério dos Quintais, Quintal de Clorofila recorded their own compositions, with lyrics by their brother, the poet Antônio Carlos Arbo. According to Dimitri Arbo, the band mixed jazz, rock, medieval music, Afro, oriental and Latin rhythms; they named their kind of music 'Viking Rock'. It's a complex sound to be sure, with tremendous depth and abundant inspiration evident throughout all of the album's atmospheric songs. An album much beloved by Hans Pokora -- and now by us. Two alternate versions of songs from the album are included as bonus tracks.
ERNAN ROCH- CON LAS VOCES FRESCAS CD (discos mariposa, mexico)
17.98usd/12.33gbp/13.89eur/1761jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… First time on CD for this extremely rare Rex label psychedelic classic (1971) from Mexico; terrific West Coast style psych, with melodic vocals and blasts of incredible fuzz guitar that seem to come out of nowhere; excellent album, whose current price for an original copy is around $1,000, if you can find a copy.
LOS SONADORES- LA VIDA CD (discos mariposa, mexico)
17.98usd/12.33gbp/13.89eur/1761jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… First reissue of this dreamy psychedelic rarity from 1972, said to be made by Spanish and Chilean musicians in the USA; don't know about that, but it was issued in the USA on Caytronics, and has been much sought after since then (see the Collector's Dreams books); some great beat ballads combined with trippy melodic psychedelic reveries; a band that was rightly named 'the Dreamers'.
ALCEU VALENÇA & GERALDO AZEVEDO- ALCEU VALENÇA & GERALDO AZEVEDO CD (discos mariposa, mexico)
17.98usd/12.33gbp/13.89eur/1761jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… The first LP for both famed musicians, Alceu Valença & Geraldo Azevedo (1972), has wild, dissonant arrangements by legendary composer and arranger Rogerio Duprat, who had also worked with Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Os Mutantes and other of Brasil's futuristic artists. Both Valença and Azevedo are Brasilian composers who created a distinctive style that mixes native northeastern rhythms, such as frevo, baião, maracatu, coco, xaxado, embolada, toada and xote, with elements of rock and psychedelia. The poetic beauty and the hypnotic rhythms in their songs have made both composers legendary in their native land. With a similar cast of musicians to the Flaviola and the Flock of the Sun album (as well as a similar vibe), this certainly qualifies as more truly great psychedelic folk music from the Pernambuco region of Brasil.
BOSSA COPA- UN SHOW DE BOSSA EN BOSSA COPA CD (editions rayuela, brazil)
16.98usd/11.64gbp/13.11eur/1663jpy (approx)
*reissue of very rare early bossa nova album from Argentina (Copacabana Records, 1966); up-tempo, hard swinging, and very jazzy throughout—sultry and energetic, sporting lush arrangements; artists include Banzo Trio, Lita with the Banzo Trio, Jorge Eduardo, Carlos Sodré, Lorge Nery, and others.
ARNALDO HENRIQUES- SO DANÇO SAMBA CD (editions rayuela, brazil)
16.98usd/11.64gbp/13.11eur/1663jpy (approx)
*a warmly personal and intimate bossa nova record; it was in 1973 that legendary Argentinean producer Alfredo Radoszynski discovered Arnaldo Henriques and Maria Nazareth during a party that Sebastiao Tapajos had organized in Rio de Janeiro. Impressed by the swing and sophistication of these two young Brazilian artists, he invited them to Buenos Aires, along with Tapajos, to record “TAP,” which during the intervening thirty years has become one on the most sought after Bossa records—a status that owed just as much to its artistic qualities as to its exclusive Argentinean pressing; Henriques then recorded this rare album as a follow up (1976) to TAP; the instrumentation includes a bit of Fender Rhodes, alongside acoustic percussion, guitar, and a bit of trombone and tenor sax; titles include a few originals as well as more familiar numbers from Brazil.
OS SAMBEATLES- OS SAMBEATLES (MANFREDO FEST) CD (fermata/braz bossa roots, brazil)
16.98usd/11.64gbp/13.11eur/1663jpy (approx)
*reissue of rare 1966 album with a bossa nova take on songs by the Beatles, all served up with plenty of great keyboard work from the legendary Manfredo Fest (well know for his combo sides of the 60s); although this album is an obscure effort by Fest, it’s in a similar vein to his better-known albums: all instrumental, strongly jazz-based, with piano or organ as the main solo instrument, soaring over the top of some tight, crackling rhythms! The tunes are all played with inventive touches that really take them from their roots as rock songs, and open them up as groovers filled with keyboard improvisation.
SANSA TRIO- VOL. 2 CD (fermata/braz bossa roots, brazil)
16.98usd/11.64gbp/13.11eur/1663jpy (approx)
*another terrific rare archival piano bossa nova jazz trio record, this one recorded for the Som Maior label in 1965; although they were not in the mainstream of the bossa movement, Sansa Trio have become much sought after by jazz fans since their heydey (if you could call it that)—this swinging little record makes it easy to comprehend why that is so; this record features Jose Briamonte (piano), Jose Ordoñez (bass), and a very young Airto Moreira (drums).
JULIO FRADE- MUSICA EN SERIO CD (record runner, brazil)
18.98usd/13.01gbp/14.66eur/1859jpy (approx)
*Since the 1960s, Brazil had a deep exchange of national music with neighboring Uruguay. This is quite evident on rare 1973 bossa-nova piano trio album by Julio Frade. Tracks by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Piazzolla Asuturu share the stage with George Gershwin and Cole Porter, resulting in an exquisite collection; there’s a full-fledged jazz approach to the Jobim number ‘Tema de Jazz’ as well as a mid-tempo sweet bossa version of Dorivaru Caimi’s masterpiece ‘’Saudade da Bahia’; other songs are particularly Brazilian in flavor. A very high quality performance. Julio Frade (piano), Neldo Castro (bass) Gaston Buensenor (drums).

PICKS OF THE WEEK
SUN CITY GIRLS- NAPOLEON & JOSEPHINE: SINGLES VOLUME 2 CD (abduction, usa)
17.98usd/12.02gbp/13.65eur/1788jpy (approx)
*This is the second volume in a series featuring rare singles and unreleased tracks from Sun City Girls. In the summer of 1988, Sun City Girls began working on two records simultaneously: Torch Of The Mystics and Dante's Disneyland Inferno. The former was finished and released in December of 1989 but the latter wasn't released until April of 1996. Over those eight years, Dante's morphed into an entirely different record due to several songs originally targeted for inclusion being hijacked by other projects. Two tracks ("X+Y" and "Frankenstein") were siphoned-off to the Kaliflower LP in 1993 and 4 tracks (1, 11, 12, 13) included here were released on 7" singles in the early '90s. The two most notable of the singles tracks dominate this record. "Napoleon & Josephine," a 13-minute episodic conversation between a vagrant and a shop owner, was originally released as a single in 1991 on Scratch Records. The full track was split into sides (parts 1 & 2) running over 6 minutes long. An alternative mix which had been shelved for 15 years is featured here. "Reflection Of A Young Boy Eating From A Can Of Dog Food On A Shiny Red X-Mas Ball" was originally released as side 4 on the double single 3 Fake Female Orgasms (Majora, 1991) and was 8 minutes in length. This extended version is the original complete recording, running 22 minutes. Legendary Phoenix electronic musician and SCG associate David Oliphant mixed and processed the entire piece live to tape in his studio. The remainder of this set is composed of like-minded and literary SCG singles and compilation tracks, including the previously unreleased "The Weatherman" which was originally recorded as an introduction for "Napoleon & Josephine." This is the second of a multi-volume set of rare & long out-of-print singles, compilation, and unreleased tracks to be assembled and sequenced to play as full-length records. Vinyl editions may also appear in time.
SUN CITY GIRLS- YOU'RE NEVER ALONE WITH A CIGARETTE: SINGLES VOLUME 1 CD (abduction, usa)
17.98usd/12.02gbp/13.65eur/1788jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Recorded in July of 1988 during the sessions that produced Sun City Girls' most popular recording, these nine tracks represent the other half of songs which were originally prepared as a 2LP demo version of Torch of the Mystics for Placebo Records in 1989. The sequencing of all 20 tracks at the time was entirely different with the predominately instrumental tracks in this collection mixed in and around the mostly vocal tracks of what became Torch. Placebo went out of business shortly after this proposed 2LP idea was presented to them but Majora Records quickly stepped in to begin releasing most of the material. Included here are five tracks from early Majora singles: "100 Pounds of Black Olives" and "The Fine-Tuned Machines of Lemuria" (the complete unreleased 12-minute version) from the single "You're Never Alone with a Cigarette" and all three tracks from Record #1 of the double 7" Three Fake Female Orgasms -- "Plaster Cupids Falling from the Ceiling," "The Beauty of Benghazi," and "Souvenirs from Jangare." The short piece "Harmful Little Armful" is from the triple 7" box set Bruce Lee, Heroin, and the Punk Scene (from a Bay Area label Massacre at Central High) and rounding out the set are three unreleased studio tracks recorded the same day as much of the Torch LP: never before heard versions of "Amazon One," "Sev Acher," and "Wild World of Animals." This is the first of a multi-volume set of reissued singles, compilation, and unreleased tracks to be assembled and sequenced to play as full-length records. Vinyl editions may also appear in time. Limited remaining stock of this now deleted item.

V/A- MARVELLOUS BOY: CALYPSO FROM WEST AFRICA CD (honest jon’s, uk)
18.98usd/12.69gbp/14.41eur/1887jpy (approx)
*Marvellous Boy: Calypso From West Africa celebrates the West African counterpart of the 1950s Soho scene uncovered in the Honest Jon's series, London Is The Place For Me. Issuing from centuries of to-ing and fro-ing between England, the West Indies, and West Africa, the same musical styles -- calypso, highlife, jazz -- overlap, proliferate, and adapt, with local traditions freshened up and thrown into the mix. With numerous faces and reference points cropping up in both milieu, this contemporaneous music-making is brimming over with the same passion for life, sparkling topicality, and extravagant, magpie creativity. The inter-war dance bands of British West Africa are often strikingly similar in sound to Trinidadian orchestras like Lovey's String Band (credited with the first calypso recordings in 1912). However, the first West African calypso recordings in the modern style are from Freetown, Sierra Leone in the early 1950s, by Ebenezer Calendar and Famous Scrubbs. In arrangements blending African and European instruments, the brass plays out the legacy of colonial military bands, albeit hair-down and a little ramshackle now; and the beautiful Creole lyrics are as quick and musical as any classic calypsonian's. Decca also organized the first calypso recording session in Ghana, down the coast, where a sound interchangeably designated "calypso" or "highlife" ruled urban dancefloors, courtesy of The Tempos and its spin-offs including The Rhythm Aces. The invasion of King Mensah of Ghana, and The Tempos' money-spinning tour of Nigeria at the start of the 1950s sparked a decade of musical innovation. Bobby Benson's new highlife 11-piece included the great trumpeters Victor Olaiya and Roy Chicago and his calypso "Taxi Driver" was their first, huge, signature hit. (By contrast, little is known about the Nigerian Rolling Stone). The Mayor's Dance Band was run by the celebrated Erekosima "Rex" Lawson, whose trademark blend of Igbo lyrics over a Calabari rhythm reflected his mixed parentage. Steven Amechi was from eastern Nigeria, and the guitar solo on "Nylon Dress" is by the king of Igbo highlife, Stephen Osita Osadebe. Saxophonist Chris Ajilo and his band The Cubanos didn't produce much calpyso-highlife, but rather, cooking Afro-Cuban jazz with traditional roots, exemplifying the open hybridity of all these forms. By the early 1960s, calypso was fading in West Africa, and U.S. soul and rhythm and blues were poised to replace Caribbean influences. Still, the dying embers would produce its most classical exponent, Godwin Omabuwa, Nigeria's own Lord Kitchener. Omabuwa cut only a few records, but his mastery of the genre was a fitting end to the heyday of calypso in British West Africa.
THE NEW DAWN- THERE'S A NEW DAWN CD (jackpot, usa)
14.98usd/10.02gbp/11.37eur/1489jpy (approx)
*The New Dawn's There's A New Dawn has been hailed as one of the rarest and best psych albums to come out of the late '60s and early '70s. Fuzz guitar, minor-chord organ dirges, tender vocals and monumental bass are the calling cards of this private press gem. Maybe it's all the rain, but like their Northwest counterparts, the New Tweedy Brothers and the Sonics, The New Dawn helped to establish a regional musical perspective that is hauntingly addictive. Initially released in July of 1970, five hundred copies were pressed, but it's estimated that only around 200 may still exist. Subsequently, auctions on Ebay for an original vinyl LP go for $2000. After being highly sought after by collectors, we are proud to release this definitive CD reissue was produced in close collaboration with Dan Bazzy, singer, songwriter, and founder of The New Dawn. Also included are three previously unreleased 1971 demos and a live track from a 2008 band reunion.

V/A- RAKS! RAKS! RAKS! 17 GOLDEN GARAGE PSYCH NUGGETS FROM THE IRANIAN 60s SCENE LP (raks, eec)
34.98usd/23.39gbp/26.55eur/3478jpy (approx)
*Raks Discos is proud to present one of the most anticipated as well as unexpected compilations from the global depths of '60s and '70s rock'n'roll: The Persian scene. Let alone coming across with a representative compilation, even solid evidences of such a scene has not been seen until now and has been largely suspected, maybe save for a select few of eager garage and psychedelic record collectors and enthusiasts of worldwide rock, who have been trying to hunt such sounds on the internet and private collectors' circles, usually to no avail. Needless to say, the most important factor in this has been the obvious hideously rare status that Iran's pre-Revolution East-West cross cultural artifacts are in right now. As with almost all Asiatic countries, the Shadows and the Ventures seem to be the true and primal influence in the Iranian music scene of the most part of '60s for the rock sound and attitude to penetrate the country's fledgling record industry and its swinging public base. In 1964, the legendary Top4 company opened up and started releasing choice chart hits from the worldwide lists, on 4-track EPs, followed soon by MonoGram and other companies. These mixed up records featured a lot of popular songs of the day, spanning the whole European continent i.e. including what's referred to now as 'Euro pop' hits and the 'big brothers,' UK and US charts. The day's youth back then was lucky: they could follow the West moment by moment now. The foremost impact of these were to feature and spread British invaders, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, otherwise available only on radio. Come 1966, '60s was in full swing in Iran too! On eye-popping purple & green Persian rug-colored vinyl. Includes full-color glossy insert with liner notes and rare photos.

EMTIDI- SAAT CD (lion productions, usa)
16.98usd/11.35gbp/12.89eur/1688jpy (approx)
*Recording in a good studio in 1972 with an accomplished engineer/musician such as Dieter Dierks (Ash Ra Tempel, Cosmic Jokers, Tangerine Dream, and yes, the Scorpions), certainly enabled Emtidi to expand their musical style on “Saat.” The end result was a shimmering, lush cosmic folk trip, with multi-tracked and treated acoustic guitars plus electric piano, fragile angelic femme vocals, vibes, and mellotron, (punctuated by the occasional acid guitar solo). Yes, “Saat” is an elevated cosmic folk brew of a refined and most magical kind—a richly textured sound thick with treated guitars, phased keyboards and trippy electronics, rendering a cosmic atmosphere similar to vintage Klaus Schulze or Ash Ra Tempel, and creating an album which has been called “one of the most beautiful cosmic treks of all time.” Pastoral imagery runs like a green silken thread throughout this beautiful record, starting with the front cover, a psychedelic airbrush painting of a pink stardust ear of wheat (“saat” means “seed”), and the inner gatefold, which depicts a luxurious golden field of corn. Bountiful and blissful. Our Lion Productions edition comes with a 16-page booklet which contains band info, a history of Rolf Ulrich Kaiser and his OHR/Pilz/Kosmischen Kuriere Records empire, and a Pilz label discography.
SERGIUS GOLOWIN- LORD KRISHNA VON GOLOKA CD (lion productions, usa)
16.98usd/11.35gbp/12.89eur/1688jpy (approx)
*In 1973, Rolf Ulrich Kaiser’s visionary powers acted as a catalyst for an authentic combination of acid, music and sprituality: the mystical LSD-fueled musical project “Lord Krishna von Goloka.” For this adventure into Indian and Oriental mythologies and legends, Kaiser asked esoteric Swiss artist (he was a friend of Giger’s), poet, specialist on Alpine folklore, and friend of Timothy Leary, Sergius Golowin, to join a group of musicians including Klaus Schulze and members of Wallenstein and Witthüser + Westrupp. It was perhaps mere coincidence that Golowin's classic treatise on witches, herbs, and magic mushrooms was published that same year (Magie der verbotenen Märchen); the book was fast becoming a cult item—it was secretly xeroxed in what was then-Communist East Germany, and later distributed in the hippie-underground there. Sergius Golowin’s intellectual and spiritual world of occultism, popular legends, and shamanism were the foundation for the project. He was responsible for the lyrics, which consisted of incantatory recitations in German over the multi-textural compositions.
GURU GURU- UFO CD (lion productions, usa)
16.98usd/11.35gbp/12.89eur/1688jpy (approx)
*A brief version of the Guru Guru story is told in the rare OHR label LP sampler “Ohrenschmaus”: “Formed in the summer 1968, when, as acoustic musicians Mani Neumeier and Uli Trepte (up to then Free jazz) said, ‘everyone bought a strong amplifier.’ The album text goes on to note that: “There are many groups who practice with acoustic or electronic instruments a spontaneously changing music, which is characterized as improvisation. Actual improvisation, however—like for example with the Guru Guru—is not straight ahead. They orient themselves at agreed upon structures.” Given freedom by the freest label of the day, free jazz drummer Mani Neumeier and bassist Uli Trepte and guitarist extraordinaire Ax Genrich let the acid and the musical innovation flow. Guru Guru were genius, and “UFO” (released in 1970) was their first testament. Like any truly groundbreaking and important album, “UFO” makes one ask oneself bizarre questions such as, “could the members of Joy Division have heard this album?” or induces one to make emphatic statements like “so this is where Throbbing Gristle got the idea.” This is an album which is über-psychedelic, proto-industrial, free in every sense. Or as one writer said, “A high water mark for acid psychedelia that possibly cannot be beat.” Our Lion Productions edition comes with a 20-page booklet which contains band info, a history of Rolf Ulrich Kaiser and OHR Records, and an OHR label discography.

SELDA BAGÇAN- VURULDUK EY HALKIM UNUTMA BIZI CD (world psychedelia, south korea)
15.98usd/10.69gbp/12.13eur/1589jpy (approx)
*It’s no wonder that psychedelic crate-diggers, and self-proclaimed vinyl vultures Andy Votel and Dominic Thomas of Finders Keepers both have tracks by Selda included on their list of favorites: her take on Anatolian music is unique. This reissue features the second album (released in 1975) by this much beloved female turkish protest singer, notorious for her clashes with Turkish governments; Selda and her acoustic guitar are accompanied here by a psychedelic rock band which includes members of Mogollar, and the result is is one of the best records we’ve heard from Turkey, for it includes ‘Utan,Utan’ (traditional folk sounds spiced with fuzz guitar) and ‘Karaoglan’; a track like ‘Askerin Türküsü’ is interesting for its medieval arrangements, and ‘Maden Dagi’ is sung with great emotion. This is an album which was forbidden in Turkey, which means it has been hard to find since its release; includes eight early singles as bonus tracks, on which hearing Selda sing is as exhilarating an experience as the first time hearing “les mysteres de voix bulgares” or the manic warble of Liz Fraser. Notes in “English” give some background on Selda and the Anatolian rock sound; nice booklet also includes lyrics.
FIKRET KIZILOK- FIKRET KIZILOK CD (world psychedelia, south korea)
15.98usd/10.69gbp/12.13eur/1589jpy (approx)
*collection of singles by Turkish protest singer much-beloved by young musicians in the underground scene in Tukey, but virtually unknown anywhere else; Fikret started his career playing electric guitar for Cahit Oben Dörtlüsü, which led to appearances in the Golden Microphone song contests that also spotlighted the talents of Erkin Koray, Mogollar and the brothers Hür El; Kizilok frequently collaborated with Bülent Ortaçgil (whose own “Benimle Oynar Misin” album is a lovely artefact of the Turkish scene), and no surprise—it was Fikret’s involvement with prominent folk poets as a result of their shared interest in traditional Anatolian folk music which was the foundation of his storied solo career; the fifteen tracks included here (all from 1970-1974) sport some heavy grooves (‘Leylim, Leylim’, ‘Gözlerinden Bellidir’, ‘Gün Ola Devran Döne’, and the fuzz-guitar heavy ‘Koyverdin Gittin Beni’), but also tantalizes with moody, introspective musings in an Eastern vein (‘Akyin Vari, Akyin’, ‘Haberin Var Mi, and the sitar-laced ‘Köroglu Daglary’. Hard to say more than to say that this is one of the best discs we have heard in a long time. But then we don’t get around as much as most of you. Booklet has notes about the Altin Microphon contests, lyrics, and photos.
ERKIN KORAY- ERKIN KORAY CD (world psychedelia, south korea)
17.98usd/12.02gbp/13.65eur/1788jpy (approx)
*Koray’s first album, an absolutely over the top debut album by the Turkish psychedelic guitar guru, which is not only the rarest of all of his albums, but also the rarest Turkish psychedelic album of them all; the record was released in 1973, but is actually culled from Koray’s singles from the previous five years. This wide range of dates (1968-73) encompasses a pretty potent period in music, and makes for great variety; some tracks have a kind of pre-psychedelic vibe, while others have the swirling hashish heaviness of that most elusive thing, a sound that one might deem “pure psychedelia”; in any case, every track has that unique Eastern feel that Koray brings to all his recordings. The end result is definitely on a par of greatness with “Elektronik Turkuler”, which makes this a must have album for any psychedelic head! And as if that wasn’t enough, there are eight incredible bonus cuts from the same period as the album tracks, only ever released as singles, that include some of the most blistering material Koray ever recorded. Wow! Liner notes have plentiful information on Erkin Koray’s early career, as well as lyrics for some songs... alas, only in Turkish.
ERKIN KORAY- 2 CD (world psychedelia, south korea)
17.98usd/12.02gbp/13.65eur/1788jpy (approx)
*advanced fusion of ethnic music and eastern music from Turkish psychedelic master Koray; this is actually his third album (second for the Dogan label), and is the 1976 follow-up to the immensely excellent "Elektronik Turkuler"; the album tracks themselves were recorded (from what we can find out) between 1972-1976, and were first issued as singles; five bonus tracks are great! and come from 1967, 1968, and 1971... as well as an undocumented and very cool acoustic version of 'Yalnizar Rihtimi' from "Elektronik Turkeler"; lyrics and photos in 8-page booklet.
ERKIN KORAY- ELEKTRONIC TURKELER CD (world psychedelia, south korea)
17.98usd/12.02gbp/13.65eur/1788jpy (approx)
*terrific heavy Eastern raves and drones from Turkey's legendary freaked-out psychedelic guitar guru; fantastic sound quality on an album that basically collected some of Koray's best singles tracks up to the date of its original release by Dogan Plakcilik in 1974—the result? some of Koray's most extended tracks. The sound that first emerges as “Elektronik Türküler” begins is that of the plucked strings of the baglama, a sound both sensuous and languid; then comes another undulating rhythm, Koray’s instrumental, ‘Sir” (Secret), with his lead baglama book-ending a stinging psychedelic guitar solo. The mood changes with the next track, ‘Hele Yar’, an acoustic re-arrangement of a Turkish ballad from the 17th Century; here, twin baglamas construct a dance rhythm behind lilting bass and scant drums. Side two of the original LP opens with the acoustic guitar-led love ballad, ‘Cemalim’ (My Cemal); this well known Anatolian folk number is well handled here with Koray’s stridently strummed acoustic guitar battling throughout against overdubbed electric guitar—background vocals waft softly in the background, echoing Koray’s hypnotic repetition of the title, accompanied by highly controlled fuzz guitar filigrees. The last track is the nine-minute odyssey that is ‘Türkü’ (Ballad): the swirling kalem, that Turkish double-reed wind instrument of snake charming tendencies, weaves a truly psychedelic arabesque against a foundation of solid bass and drums; the voice of Koray emerges from the shadows drenched in reverb, slowly reciting words of great import, intoned over and over again as if in consecration of a ceremonial rite; the pace quickens to a Dervish whirl, until a smash of glass breaks the tension... and we begin again, with Koray’s guitar and trance-like recitation carrying us further and further back into time, each word fading farther and farther into ancestral echo-land where east is west and west is east... and we are all together. A densely textured psychedelic masterpiece... mesmerizing.
3 HUR-EL- 3 HUR-EL CD (world psychedelia, south korea)
17.98usd/12.02gbp/13.65eur/1788jpy (approx)
*their first lp… a Turkish psychedelic delight, culled from rare singles by the Hür-El brothers, and released in 1972 in small quantities on Diskotur; some of the very best Turkish psych— amazing rhytms, incredible guitar playing, some psych sounds and vocals; less Western in some ways than their great “Arsivi” LP, but still with the same excellent acid fuzz guitar, empassioned vocals and Eastern percussion that makes for memorable listening; if you ask us, and we know no one did, we say it belongs in every record collection. A must listen.
3 HUR-EL- HUREL ARSIVI CD (world psychedelia, south korea)
17.98usd/12.02gbp/13.65eur/1788jpy (approx)
*a masterpiece of Turkish ethno-psychedelic freakbeat delight, recorded between 1970 and 1975 by the three very talented Hür El brothers; this, their second album, has the heavy hashish sound—fuzz guitar, empassioned vocals and Eastern percussion—that makes Turkish psych so savoury to the rest of the world; brother Feridun was clearly infected by a fuzz virus: his two-arm guitar (one for guitar, one for saz) will give you no rest; more drums than percussion this time around, with the end result an astounding blend of psychedelic rock with Turkish tradition, thanks to the abundant distorted fuzz guitar and electric saz; the end result is Middle Eastern-ized rock with acid fuzz guitar and electric piano, plus Eastern ethnic percussion and stringed instruments, and emotive vocals in Turkish—very possibly as good as anything recorded by countryman Erkin Koray.
SOFT ROCK AND LIGHT PSYCHEDELIC HARMONY
CONGREGACION- VIENE LP (aroma, germany)
24.98usd/16.70gbp/18.96eur/2484jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Congregación was perhaps the most legendary of the many excellent bands of the Chilean musical scene of the early 1970s. In spite of not having been a popular band like Los Jaivas, Los Blops and Congreso, they deserve their position of privilege in the history of Chilean rock. The group was from Valparaíso and led by musician and poet, mystic and ecologist Antonio Smith. They wrote lyrics with a significant political, philosophical and religious content, which were a real "celebration of life." Musically, they crafted ballads in an Andean style with ethnic atmospheres: you could say they made a kind of psychedelic folk with progressive leanings. The music of Congregación has an evocative sense of open space, using natural sounds and acoustic textures to foreground Smith's soaring melodies. The results are incredibly beautiful. Like another album, Bulent's “Benimle Oynar Misin,” it has just the perfect balance plaintively sorrowful acid/folk and gently arranged pop (those Beatles-esque harmonics are impossible to overlook). They recorded just one LP and a single (both in 1972); due to the Chilean "coup d'etat" of 1973, the band were forced to put an end to their musical career. Antonio Smith settled in Argentina, where he recorded an LP in 1974 with musicians from Los Jaivas, Illapu and Matías Pizarro called "Sol de Chile" (Chilean Sun); as a solo artist he also recorded two other LPs: "Ven seamos más" (Come and let's be more of us) in 1974, and "Somos el mundo" (We are the world) in 1975. But it’s the music of Congregación which has lasted the longest, and made the greatest impact on listeners worldwide. In the last decades, the music of "Congregación" has conquered people around the world, even though the original LP is a very, very rare collector's piece. This limited edition of 500 copies is an exact replica of the original gatefold release, with notes and lyrics on the LP inner sleeve. A highly recommended album that is surely one of the pinnacles of dreamy psychedelia.
EL KINTO- CIRCA 1968 LP (lion productions, usa)
22.98usd/15.37gbp/17.44eur/2285jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… i was lucky to see Uruguayan music born. Before El Kinto it didn't exist, and if it did I did not know it or like it. - Osvaldo Fattorusso… An exact replica of the original Clave label LP release of fourteen crucial tracks by these Uruguayan legends, whose line-up includes members of Totem and Limonada, and features the compositional abilities of poet/panhandler and acid casualty Eduardo Mateo and his alter-ego, candombe legend Ruben Rada. El Kinto began their brief but eventful life in music playing in the dark shadows at Orfeo Negro (Black Orpheus), a night club near the Portones de Carrasco in Montevideo, Uruguay. Inspired by the way Tropicalistas like Os Mutantes were transforming the pop music of Brazil, El Kinto embraced their own native music forms—but, as always, they went a step further: they integrated candombe and bossa nova into beat music, but they also added their own notion of “psicodelics.” They experimented with newness in all its variety—new sounds from their guitars, new types of vocal delivery, new ways of striking the drums (with little brooms, with gavels or their hands). As one journalist noted in 1969, “El Kinto, directed by the brilliant Mateo, and amplified to the maximum... creates a frenzy of rhythmic music in which—with force and conviction—pure wave ‘beat’ is synthesized with the warmth of the African drums.” The result of the group’s tireless experiments is music which sounds fresh and engaging today. In a world dominated by the commercialization of everything—including (although it is difficult to comprehend)—the arts, all we can say is, thank god for El Kinto! Now, on to the presentation—the highest quality mastering and pressing (done at Acoustech Mastering/RTI in California, the same people who master and press every title that audiophile label Classic Records makes); the resulting LP is housed in a poly-lined sleeve, inside an ultra-heavy 1960's style jacket, which is housed in a loose-fitting plastic sleeve. Inside you will find a double-fold insert packed with photos, detailed band history, and lyrics for this most important of Uruguayan bands, printed on 100% recycled paper. The LP labels are replicas of the Sondor originals. A top of the line pressing all the way. Limited edition of 500 copies.
LIMONADA- LIMONADA LP (lion productions, usa)
22.98usd/15.37gbp/17.44eur/2285jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Although they sprung ready-made from of the ashes of legendary candombe/beat group El Kinto, one of the best-kept secrets from Uruguay’s musical mythology is nevertheless the group of musicians who recorded one album as Limonada. So what happened? The story starts with the end of El Kinto, when band leader and iconoclastic maniac Eduardo Mateo decided to embark on a solo career (see our Lion Productions collection of his early music for more details), and the other members of El Kinto said “let’s do something together.” And so it was that in the middle of 1970, Limonada recorded their one and only album, “LimoNada” (Sondor 33.111). It is a strange record, with backwards tape splices and abrupt song changes, that remains at the same time absolutely accessible and very groovy, in a Tropicalia sort of way, which might explain why it was an immediate success. In truth, it’s a profound mystery why the Limonada LP—one of the ten best sellers of its time within three weeks of its release—seems to have vanished from the consciousness of even the most devoted fans of obscure music. Until now, of course. Inside you will find an insert with historical background on the Uruguayan scene, details of the band’s past, plenty of photos, as well as a brief overview of the legendary Sondor label, printed on 100% recycled paper. The LP labels are replicas of the Sondor originals. A top of the line pressing all the way. Limited edition of 500 copies.
EMMANUELLE PARRENIN- MAISON ROSE LP (lion productions, usa)
24.98usd/16.70gbp/18.96eur/2484jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… We begin by saying that this is an album unlike any other. A bold statement, perhaps. Yet look in the “Scented Gardens of the Mind” book and you will see this description: “a revelation of a folk album, with songs of incredible beauty and innovative arrangements. It features traditional instruments you’ve hardly ever heard before and touches of the avant-garde. Play this album directly after that of another randomly chosen female folk album, and you will notice the difference! This is one of the best!” Parrenin had been part of a traditional “antique folk” movement in France in the late 1960’s (she was in many ways a French equivalent to Sandy Denny or Mandy Morton); indeed, she had recorded eight albums with musicians from this scene before “Maison Rose”—her best, and last album, recorded in 1976 and released the following year. The record seems to alternate between a cosmic take on an ancient Breton sound, and delicate, multi-tracked ballads—ranging from sounds that would not be out of place on an Ash Ra Tempel album to elements of traditional French folk music (including home-made instruments) that are just as exotic. Certainly, the avant-garde edge lurking beneath the simple folkiness of “Maison Rose” puts in mind the explorations of Brigitte Fontaine with her sometime musical voyager Areski; there are also suggestions of the pastoral caranavserai aesthetic of Vashti Bunyan, as well as the multi-track sensuality of Linda Perhacs (to name two much-touted singers who seem to have a similar ability to enchant). But Parrenin has her own style, her music has its own deeply ethereal quality, and the album itself has its own magic spell to cast that renders comparison with other albums unimportant in the end. Magnificent… we say. Now, on to the presentation—the highest quality mastering and pressing (done at Acoustech Mastering/RTI in California, the same people who master and press every title that audiophile label Classic Records makes); the resulting LP is housed in a poly-lined sleeve, inside an ultra-heavy 1960's style gatefold jacket, which is housed in a loose-fitting plastic sleeve. Inside the sleeve, you will find an insert with full details on Ms. Parrenin, printed on 100% recycled paper. The LP labels are replicas of the Ballon Noir originals. A top of the line pressing all the way. Limited edition of 500 copies.

Hank Brown, the host of the show, still rules the airwaves of Central New York State with his top rated morning radio show. The original LP is a highly sought after lo-fi teen masterpiece. This collection of raw crude teen manglers presents the little known regional New York State rock n' roll scene. Cool package includes pix/notes/ interviews plus two newly found bonus tracks! This release kicks off a series of New York State garage sounds sure to please sixties sound hounds who dig their music RAW! Audiophile alert: This album mastered from a mint copy of the TWIST-A-RAMA LP. Due to the primitive fidelity and astonishingly low grade plastic used on the original 1965 pressing, surface noise is detectable. It is presented in the highest possible fidelity.

17.98usd/12.02gbp/13.65eur/1788jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Takehisa Kosugi is without doubt one of the most important and influential figures of the Japanese avant-garde still performing. Over the years he has worked with everyone from John Cage to Sonic Youth as well as being an active member of the Fluxus group and starting his own performance units Group Ongaku and the Taj Mahal Travellers. His album “Catch-Wave,” originally released in 1975, features on side A "an excerpt from a meta-media solo improvisation" utilizing heavily-processed violin, voice, radio and oscillators (the latter modified via wind and light) to create a massive drone. Side B is "a triple performance by a solo vocalist" where a vocal phrase is taken and electronically modified until it loses any meaning other than as part of the wave form.” Booklet contains biography, and discography for this important avant-garde performer.

THE PYRAMIDS- LALIBELA LP (ikef, usa)
19.98usd/16.70gbp/18.96eur/2484jpy (approx)
*'We were playing music to burst out of our bodies. Extremely free! Extremely intense!' -- Idrissa Ackamoor. The Pyramids came together in the feverish expat climate of Paris & Amsterdam in 1971 where the three Antioch classmates -- Idrissa Ackamoor, Margo Ackamoor and Kimathi Asante -- hooked up with drummer Donald Robinson and began to flesh out their own brand of musical freedom, but it was the subsequent pilgrimage back to Africa that proved to be the young musicians' creative awakening & truly set their brand of spiritual jazz apart from the pack. Cut just months after their return to Yellow Springs, Ohio in 1973 with kindred players jumping in on the session, Lalibela is an urgent, beautiful & massive two track suite of propulsive Afrodelic cosmic earth groove. Exact repro of the ultra-rare private issue LP on the band's Pyramid Records label. Remastered from the original source tapes. 180 gram virgin vinyl pressing.
THE PYRAMIDS- KING OF KINGS LP (ikef, usa)
19.98usd/16.70gbp/18.96eur/2484jpy (approx)
*'There were spirits in that recording studio! I remember a feeling of spiritual strength while we were recording! Images and sounds reverberating off the walls!' - Idris Ackamoor. Though only a year had passed in the time between the fierce abandon of Lalibela and 1974's King Of Kings, it signaled a monumental shift for the band. By 1974, the core Pyramids continued their musical odyssey with their Lalibela collaborators -- percussionists Hekaptah, Marcel Lytle and saxophonist Masai -- while welcoming drummer-in-exile Donald Robinson back to the Pyramids' Midwestern American family. Inspired, the group set to shape a set of compositions that most fully realized -- in form, feel & reflection -- their African passage. On a spring day in 1974, the Pyramids went into a remote 16-track studio called Appalachia Sound Recording hours from Antioch in Chillicothe, Ohio -- the site of ancient native Indian burial mounds -- and, with no less intensity than before, cut a warm and infectious spiritual jazz masterpiece -- King of Kings -- in a day and headed back to Antioch that night. Exact repro of the ultra-rare private issue LP on the band's Pyramid Records label. Remastered from the original source tapes. 180 gram virgin vinyl pressing.
THE PYRAMIDS- BIRTH/SPEED/MERGING LP (ikef, usa)
19.98usd/16.70gbp/18.96eur/2484jpy (approx)
*A psychedelic Afrojazz stunner that capped off a feverish diaspora from the Midwest to the Bay Area by way of Africa. Cut in 1975, Birth/Speed/Merging was the band's highest end production to date and their final recorded act. The mood was celebratory, carnivalesque and wholly in the groove. Features the burning classic 'Black Man & Woman Of The Nile.' Remastered from the original source tapes. 180 gram virgin vinyl pressing.
ALICE B. TOKLAS- DIMENSION 618: TIMELESS 12” (slow to speak, usa)
17.98usd/12.02gbp/13.65eur/1788jpy (approx)
*An intriguing one-sided release featuring music from guitarist John Abercrombie's 1974 solo debut on ECM, Timeless, and having something to do with writer Alice B. Toklas. Featuring Jan Hammer on organ, piano, and synthesizer and Jack DeJohnette on drums. Silkscreened lettering on jacket… The 1979 Foundation For The Black Arts Presents 'Timeless' ...sequestered moments written by John Abercrombie. Chosen by Paul Nickerson for Poverty's Paradise, Inc. Hand crafted 1st edition pressing -- 100 scribed. This release is in direct conflict with the Unlawful Societies Act of 1799." We try, we struggle, all the time to find words to express our love. The quality, the quantity, certain that no two people have experienced it before in the history of creation. We have known each other forever, since before conception even. We remember playing together in a playpen, crossing paths at F.A.O Schwarz. We remember meeting in front of the holy temple in the days before Christ, we remember greeting each other at the Forum, at the Parthenon, on passing ships as Christopher Columbus sailed to America. We have survived a pogrom together, we have died in Pachau together, we have been lynched by the Ku Klux Klan together. There have been cancer, polio, the bubonic plague, consumption, morphine addiction. We have had children together, we have been children together, we were in the womb together. Our history is so deep and wide and long, we have known each other a million years. And we don't know how to express this kind of love, deep and wide and long, we have known each other a million years. And we don't know how to express this kind of love, this kind of feeling. I get paralyzed sometimes. One day, we are in the shower and I want to say to him, I could be submerged in sixty feet of water right now, never drowning, never even fearing drowning, knowing I would always be safe with you here, knowing that it would be ok to die as long as you are here. I want to say this but don't. -- Elizabeth Wurtzel
GLOBAL
SONIA ROSA- BOSSA ROSA DE SONIA CD (continental/warner bros., brazil)
12.98usd/8.68gbp/9.85eur/1290jpy (approx)
*Gentle bossa nova blowing in from the south thanks to the lovely Sonia Angelica de Carvalho Rosa on this rare LP; Rosa’s tender voice and sweet acoustic bossa tunes are backed by unobtrusive orchestrations arranged by Chiquinho Moraes—and gentle and wonderful they are. The album was released in 1968, when Sonia (a contemporary of Nara Leão on the bossa nova scene of the late 1960’s) was 18 years old, surprising, as it includes six original songs. Sonia went to Japan when she was 20 years old and did not return to Brazil. Remastered from the original tapes, and it shows, as the sound quality is stupendous. Call it music to listen to through vintage tube amps.
JONGO TRIO- JONGO TRIO CD (emi, brazil)
12.98usd/8.68gbp/9.85eur/1290jpy (approx)
*Rare second Copacabana Records album from 1972 by the Jongo Trio, a bossa nova group who managed to blend vocals and keyboards together into a magical whole! the harmony vocals of the Jongo Trio soar above the music, in itself a groove laid down on bass, keyboards (organ, electric piano, acoustic keyboards), and percussion. Includes a fantastic up-tempo version of Joao Gilberto’s ‘Aguas De Marco,’ plus the standout tracks ‘Alo Feveiro,’ ‘Quem Vem La,’ ‘Cavaleiro De Aruanda,’ among others.
OS 3 MORAIS- OS 3 MORAIS CD (emi, brazil)
12.98usd/8.68gbp/9.85eur/1290jpy (approx)
*If you like groovy Brazilian music, this one should appeal to you. On this album (1971), Os 3 Morais blend some of the baroque orchestrations that grace the music of Marcos Valle and Antonio Adolfo, the jazz/funk underpinnings of Som 3, and the vocals of harmony groups like Quarteto Em Cy. Includes an impressive version of Marcus Valle’s ‘Freio Aerodynamico’—well worth buying it just for that alone; of course, the summery ‘Azul Da Cor Do Mar’ is pretty great too, and the groove of ‘Se Quiser Valer’ cooks. Other tracks include ‘Tico Tico No Fuba,’ ‘Se Quiser Valer,’ and ‘Sambachiana’.
ADOLFO E A BRAZUCA- ADOLFO E A BRAZUCA CD (odeon/emi, brazil)
12.98usd/8.68gbp/9.85eur/1290jpy (approx)
*A lost treasure from Brazilian Antiono Adolfo—a keyboard player, arranger, whom many consider to be one of the most important musicians of his generation. This oftentimes dreamy album from 1971 has Adolfo working with A Brazuca, who add excellent vocal harmonies to the proceedings; they add spice to this amalgam of electric piano, guitars, and orchestrations. The end results are excellent: the track ‘Atenção! Atenção!’ sounds to us like a missing track from the original Tropicalia compilation, especially when the fuzz guitar kicks in! ‘Pela Cidade’ sounds very much like the groovy sexy arrangements by Jean-Claude Vannier for Serge Gainsbourg/Jane Birkin erotic classics. But then, you’ve got the Adolfo’s ferocious vocals set against the ghostly melody in ‘Tributo a Victor Manga’ to make one think of something quite different. Includes the breezy classic ‘Transamazonica,’ as well as ‘Que Se Dane,’ ‘Atencao Atencao,’ ‘Claudia,’ ‘Panorama,’ ‘Tributo A Victor Manga,’ ‘Caminhada,’ ‘Grilopus No 1,’ among others. There are other artists on a similar plane of existence (Marcos Valle, Edu Lobo, Milton Nascimento spring to mind); Adolfo’s music resembles that of his more famous contemporaries in that he blends funk, jazz, MPB, and baroque orchestrations. It is the supple fusion of these disparate elements that has made Adolfo's records from this period extremely sought after by record collectors.
CLAUDIA- VOCE CLAUDIA VOCE CD (odeon/emi, brazil)
12.98usd/8.68gbp/9.85eur/1290jpy (approx)
*This out of print 1971 lp is a nice album jazzy album, with stylish orchestrations by Geraldo Vespar and Orlando Silveira, that reminds a lot of people of the records by Marcos Valle from the late 1960's; almost unknown outside of Brazil, Claudia has more than twenty albums, having her career peak at early 70's. She won some important recognition at the "Festivais da Canção" and for a certain period, divided with Elis Regina the public and media recognition of being the best Brazilian Diva. Claudia's vocals are set among an intelligent mix of organ, abundant percussion, horns, and strings, at all times demonstrating a strong commitment to the groove; it also has a Nancy Sinatra-esque go-go vibe mixed in with the bossa/swing, which only adds another rather bizarre level of interest.
EVA- EVA CD (odeon/emi, brazil)
12.98usd/8.68gbp/9.85eur/1290jpy (approx)
*Sweet bossa nova inflected soul and pop album from singer Eva (1974), with orchestrations by Gaya; the album includes American pop ballads (a frenetic version of ‘Moon River’, for example), plus originals along the lines of post-bossa nova singers like Doris Monteiro or Claudette Soares, although more modern in their approach.

TAKEHISA KOSUGI- CATCH-WAVE CD (world psychedelia, south korea)
JAZZ
