ROCK, POP AND PSYCHEDELIC
SIC ALPS- PLEASURES AND TREASURES LP (animal disguise, usa)
14.98usd/7.54gbp/10.12eur/1606jpy (approx)
*restocked… What can I say about this band without sounding too ridiculous or stoned? Ah well, here it goes... this stuff just has that sound, man. A timeless breath of aged freshness with a heavy vintage feel. We could call it rock, psychedelic rock, lo-fi garage pop, but when you start labeling something, the words start to supersede the sound. Just flip this on, sit back, listen for yourself and breathe it in. That's it, the sound -- it's like taking a deep breath. An honest breath of timelessness, filtered through the delay and echo of the past. A modern psychedelic classic. Honestly, it's hard to tell when this was recorded. Early-mid '60s, '70s? Something about this band... OK, enough of the voice of non-reason, I'll just tell it straight. This is the debut album by Sic Alps, recorded in 2004-5 and now getting the proper treatment courtesy of Animal Disguise. Sic Alps are the duo of Mike Donovan and Matthew Hartman (Cat Power, Coachwhips, Total Shutdown) but at the time of this recording they were a three-piece: Mike Donovan (Big Techno Werewolves, Folding Cassettes label head), Bianca Sparta (Erase Errata), and Adam Stonehouse (The Hospitals). This is their 'lost' masterpiece and defining document of modern garage-psych-rock circa 2004 San Francisco.
DINOSAUR JR.- DINOSAUR JR. LP (baked goods, uk)
20.98usd/10.56gbp/14.17eur/2249jpy (approx)
*The first three Dinosaur Jr. records repressed for the first time since their original release -the first being on Homestead and the second two on SST-. All three records are in edition of 2000 copies and contain bonus tracks: Self Titled -- 'Bulbs of Passion,' 'Does It Float (live)'; You're Living All Over Me -- 'Just Like Heaven'; Bug -- 'Keep The Glove.' Baked Goods is Mascis' own label. Pressed on blue vinyl. essential!
DINOSAUR JR.- YOU'RE LIVING ALL OVER ME LP (baked goods, uk)
20.98usd/10.56gbp/14.17eur/2249jpy (approx)
*lp version of the 2nd Dinosaur. album, originally released by sst in 1987. Dino cut all the excess ruffage from their diet, and Murph and Lou locked into a tuff little unit. Even the solos feel like they're being corralled by their burgeoning pop instincts. If they lumber, it's a tuneful lumbering. They discovered the sweet spot between Black Sabbath and the Buzzcocks, which every carpetbagging grunge chancer (and one or two geniuses) took to the mall a few years later.... Pressed on red marbled vinyl.
DINOSAUR JR.- BUG LP (baked goods, uk)
20.98usd/10.56gbp/14.17eur/2249jpy (approx)
*lp version of the 3rd Dinosaur Jr. album, originally released by sst in 1988. Bug was recorded a year later as Dino crested on a wave of goodwill, good press, and international touring. 'Freak Scene' is probably indie rock's greatest guitar performance and the band's greatest pop song. You can also hear the influence/feedback loop Dino had after razing London, specifically the combo of distant-sounding feedback washes and Byrds-y plucking that closes 'No Bones,' a sound cut-rate shoegazers would milk for another six years at least. Pressed on green marbled vinyl.
DARK HORSE & THE CAROUSELS- DARK HORSE & THE CAROUSELS CD
(self released, usa)
9.98usd/5.02gbp/6.74eur/1070jpy (approx)
*this one caught me by surprise… solid heartbreakers/stones/dogtown balladeers/faces style rock-n-roll from philadelphia. overall solid songs/attack with a good amount of swagger (which makes it of course). get on up with it and see em at makin time tonight!!!
BURMESE- MONKEYS TEAR ME TO SHREDS LP (enterruption, usa)
14.98usd/7.54gbp/10.12eur/1606jpy (approx)
*Completely raw and annihilation brutal dual damaged bass and drums attack from the infamous Burmese, club destroyers extraordinaire. Recorded in 2000 at their rehearsal space in Oakland on 8 track reel-to-reel by wm.Rage (Enterruption, Blue Sabbath Black Cheer), not long before they recorded their debut CD release for Tumult Records: same material, different recordings. Also includes from the same session their blistering cover version of Black Flag's "I've Heard It Before" - previously released on their "Treaties of Greed and Filth" 7". Mastered by Scott Colburn (Sun City Girls). Edition 500x copies, red vinyl.
VETIVER- YOU MAY BE BLUE 12” (gnomonsong, usa)
9.98usd/5.02gbp/6.74eur/1070jpy (approx)
*Nearly two years on from the release of Vetiver's highly acclaimed second album, To Find Me Gone, this surprising 12-inch--which features remixes of two of that album's tracks--breaks the silence and announces a new year and exciting new period of activity for the band.
During the recording and mixing of To Find Me Gone, producer Thom Monahan and Vetiver mainman Andy Cabic talked about attempting something more "deconstructive and electronic" than what the two had previously done. For this, they selected the album's initial two songs, "You May Be Blue" and "Been So Long."
"The beginning of 'You May Be Blue,' the delayed Wurlitzer organ figure," says Cabic, "on its own suggests what might follow could be quite different from the song that does.... [It also] promises some kind of electronic shuffle, and the remix is an opportunity to follow through. My favorite parts of 'Been So Long' are the harmonies of Nathan, Rachel and myself, and I wanted to create an instrumental drone dub version of that song which focuses on the backing harmonies."
Long-time studio partners, Cabic and Monahan-- a.k.a. Neighbors-- built these remixes in spurts between their busy schedules. After a lot of layering and ProTooling, practically nothing of the original "You May Be Blue" remains; the bulk of the dark and danceable instrumentation consists of keyboards played by Cabic and Otto Hauser, and electronic drums played live by the both. Cabic and Monahan also reordered the basic tracks of "Been So Long" and added powerful new droney parts on the melodica and pedal steel by Farmer Dave Scher and the breathily intoned flute-playing of Alissa Anderson. Much additional editing wizardry on the part of Monahan helped complete the metamorphosis of these tracks with new, unique characters that sit alongside the original versions.
OMAR RODRIGUEZ-LOPEZ- SE DICE BISONTE, NO BUFALO LP (gold standard laboratories, usa)
14.98usd/7.54gbp/10.12eur/1606jpy (approx)
*now available on vinyl! One of four albums written and recorded by omar Rodriguez-lopez whilst living in Amsterdam in 2005, Se Dice Bisonte, No Bufalo was conceived simultaneously to the mars-voltas’s Amputechture and Omar's soundtrack to the forthcoming Jorge Hernandez film, El Bufalo de la Noche. Consisting of three vocal tracks and six instrumentals, the album includes the original studio version of the song "Please Heat This Eventually" (without the vocals of Damo Suzuki). The song "Rapid Fire Tollbooth" has been a feature of The Mars Volta's live set for the past few months and is proving to be a favorite among the rabid fans populating the band's message board.
BIRDS OF MAYA- VOL. 1 LP (holy mountain, usa)
15.98usd/8.04gbp/10.80eur/1713jpy (approx)
*It's been said that Volume One is possibly the best rock release to come out of Philadelphia, ever (with the possible exception of the, ahem, boogie witch cdr). While low on recording budget, attitude and pretension, Birds of Maya is high on stolen riffs and an energetic execution seldom seen outside of a Sunday ruling by Seamus McCaffery. Whether they are mangling riffs or stepping way out for fried boogie solos Birds of Maya oozes a dark chunky sludge with elements from all the colors of the classic rock rainbow. Do they really sound like "a GG Allin demo played through a megaphone?" It's a fair description and it's certainly colorful, but it leaves out an awful lot. They are loud and they are chaotic, but they have way more groove than GG Allin could have ever imagined.
BLUES CONTROL- BLUES CONTROL LP (holy mountain, usa)
15.98usd/8.04gbp/10.80eur/1713jpy (approx)
*restocked… Blues Control might just be the missing link between Van Halen and legendary experimentalist Henry Flynt. They are a duo. Lea Cho plays swank but grounded atmospheric keyboard parts (think Harold Budd), through which guitar player and manipulator of assorted junk-on-table Russ Waterhouse cuts, whittles and lays to waste. It's a hazy, spaced world that exists between fuzzed distortion, jabbering electronics, and a lazy, stay-in-bed psychedelic glaze, with rhythmic keyboards pulsating below it all a la a guy named Florian-- and you can choose which one you want. Oh yeah, I gotta mention the humid bikini-vibe that permeates the entire album.
BLUES CONTROL- PUFF LP (woodsist, usa)
15.98usd/8.04gbp/10.80eur/1713jpy (approx)
*restocked… 2nd pressing of this earlier Woodsist release. Blues Control is Lea Cho and Russ Waterhouse, a piano, guitar, and tapes duo from New York. Puff is their first full-length record, after two cassette-only releases. Puff is the work of two modern gris-gris chefs, and the most righteously authentic stoner gumbo this side of Twin Infinitives or Jungle Rot. Glittery framed sunglasses and doper's remorse. The finest racket of 2007 so far.' --James Jackson Toth (Wooden Wand)
OM- VARIATIONS ON A THEME LP (holy mountain, usa)
15.98usd/8.04gbp/10.80eur/1713jpy (approx)
*restocked… om reunites one of the most powerful rhythm sections in rock music: Al Cisneros [bass, vocals] and Chris Hakius [drums], both ex-members of the legendary Sleep.
Variations on a Theme is comprised of three long songs employing a series of rhythmic chants whose cadence-like textural drive conveys flight. The album's numerous lyrics serve as symbolist vehicles to a state outside the field of time and space.
Variations on a Theme is a series of vibrations and flow. The opening track, "On The Mountain at Dawn" is the thematic blueprint of the entire album; a transportive series of differentiated verse with sets of solid groove. "Kapila's Theme" furthers the motif while the closer "Annapurna" breaks the spell, where the final wash of sound reflects the infinite.
OM- CONFERENCE OF THE BIRDS LP (holy mountain, usa)
15.98usd/8.04gbp/10.80eur/1713jpy (approx)
*restocked… Comprised of two songs that build on OM's use of cyclical rhythm, riff, and vocal intonation, the duo's new album Conference of the Birds blends metal, chant, drone, dub, and psychedelia. The band's lyrics expound upon the structure of the universe, potentiality, and freedom from the physical body. Engineered by Billy Anderson and produced by the band, Conference of the Birds progresses beyond their debut, Variations on a Theme, with more fully realized songwriting and production.
OM- PILGRIMAGE LP (southern lord, usa)
18.98usd/9.55gbp/12.82eur/2035jpy (approx)
*restocked… Three songs featuring om’s unique use of riff, cadence and chant comprise the duo’s new album Pilgrimage. Lyrical themes address the processes of mind, psychic reality, astral and casual planes of being, and the nature of the soul. Engineered by steve albini and produced by the band, the motifs that were initiated on their previous two album are continued here unabated.
SLEEP- SLEEP’S HOLY MOUNTAIN LP (kreation, usa)
19.98usd/10.06gbp/13.50eur/2142jpy (approx)
*Gatefold LP reissue of this stoner rock classic! Remastered for vinyl by Mell Dettmer (Earth, sunn 0))), Altar, etc..). totally essential!
SERGE GAINSBOURG- LES ANNEES PSYCHEDELIQUES 1966-1971 2LP (le smoke disques, portugal)
19.98usd/10.06gbp/13.50eur/2142jpy (approx)
*Le Smoke Disque is only concerned with the output of one man Ð that is, the late French icon Serge Gainsbourg. And, as most every music fan knows, in the late 60s and early 70s Gainsbourg and his stable of arrangers and musicians could get down with the best of ‘em. This collection stands as the definitive survey of Mssr. Gainsbourg’s psychedelic years. Culling its music from rare vinyl (Gainsbourg’s ultra-rare 7” B-side from the Mister Freedom OST) and master tapes (the superb and never commercially released “La Horse” and the breakbeat classic “Requiem Pour Un Con”) and utilizing tasteful restoration and remastering, Le Smoke Disque’s latest anthology promises to be the first time that many of these songs will be heard by the record-buying public - at least in this form. And with bonus beats to boot. There’s a reason why Le Smoke Disque is a subsidiary of the acclaimed Peak Of Western Civilization Records, the company that brought us such classic compilations as “Incidental Music from The French New Wave Masters” and “Le Planet Fantastique Ð Alain Goraguer’s Very Best.” Contains arrangements by the visionaries Michel Colombier and Jean Claude Vannier.
RAVEN- BACK TO OHIO BLUES LP (owl, usa)
18.98usd/9.55gbp/12.82eur/2035jpy (approx)
*Official master tapes self-released reissue of this unknown hardrock/pre-punk Ohio LP from 1975 --previously reissued and long gone on the Rockadelic label. Each copy is signed and numbered by Raven himself, in an edition of 800. The Back to Ohio Blues LP by Raven (that's one man's pseudonym, not a band name) might be the ultimate non-commercial '70s American rock record, unintentionally putting the most ardent anarchist punk bands to shame. Why? Raven never sold a single copy of the original LP! Back to Ohio Blues was purely a vanity pressing, meant for friends, comrades, and maybe former cellmates. I imagine most of the original copies have smack/crank/blow/weed residue ground into the grooves and/or were tossed to the curb when the biker who owned the LP skipped town. I'm not sure Raven could've sold many at the time, though, because this burnt-out, histrionic, bluesy hard rock strikes me as a Led Zeppelin fan's bad dream, like if Zep were lobotomized (if only), left with only the most rudimentary shell of its former self-fucking, drugging, the blues, and nary an extended metaphor to be found. That said, Raven's backing band, with Raven singing and wylin' out on the 6-string, managed to produce a convincing and competent stripped-down sound, especially considering the LP recording was the only time the band played together. This record, from 1975, could be considered a progenitor to the unique admixture of forward-looking sound and retrograde, gutter lyrical subject-matter associated with rockn'roll from Ohio. Raven doesn't approach the cerebral proto-punk of a band like Pere Ubu in any way; rather, the darkness, nihilism, and desperation of Electric Eels or even H-100s, as well as the fuck-you-I'm-gonna-do-it-my-way independence of Vertical Slit or Mike Rep, are apparent here. (Mike Rep wrote the liner notes to this reissue) The context of Mike Rep's 'Rocket to Nowhere' and 'Mama Was a Schitzo,' both cream-of-the-crop skeletal early punk songs recorded circa 1975, comes into focus listening to Raven. This record doesn't diminish the shit-fi achievement of Raven's Columbus compatriot, but rather, when listening to them side-by-side, affinities emerge that make punk rock's musical rupture less stark than we often consider it to be. --Shit-fi.com
TAJ MAHAL TRAVELLERS- AUGUST 1974 2CD (p-vine, japan)
39.98usd/20.12gbp/27.01eur/4287jpy (approx)
*restocked… double cd reissue of the 2nd Taj Mahal Travellers album, originally issued by Japanese Columbia in 1974 as a 2LP set. Along with their debut album July 15th, 1972 (released by Japanese CBS in '72), these are some of the most hallowed and whispered about documents of the avant-garde artifact-era (a set of these on original LP would set you back $1000+ even 10-15 years ago & have very rarely been offered anywhere). Legendary higher-key improv-drone extravaganzas that more than live up to their reputation, this reissue is going to make a certain sector of underground society very happy. The group was led by the infamous Fluxus member Takehisa Kosugi (electric violin, harmonica, voice, etc.), with: Kyo Koike (electric double bass), suntool, voice, etc.), Yukio Tsuchiya (bass-tuba, percussion), Beiji Nagai (trumpet, synthesizer Mini-Korg, timpani), Tokio Hasegaw (voice, percussion), Kinji Hayashi (electronic technique), Hirokeszu Sato (percussion, voice). Recorded live at Nippon Columbia Studio #1, Tokyo, August 19, 1974. Four side-long improvisations."Places and times of the trip: coffee houses, small galleries of Tokyo. They perform also on lonely beaches at dawn or on deserted hills in the afternoon. Also in Sweden, India, Iran, and England. Wherever a power supply is available. 'This music is not rehearsed, it happens. Without written notes or oral instructions; without an ensemble leader, each one having his own discourse immediately integrated into a slow, irregular throbbing of complex sound waves. Sound waves surfing.' Verfremdung: instruments are amplified with delay through echo machines. Previously produced sounds delivered by distant loudspeakers have already become something beyond reach when heard. This feedback -- actually a time-space lag -- is the basis of their music. The instrument arsenal: a violin played with glissandi in the same manner as the Indian sitar, string bass, guitar, drums, harmonica, small synthesizers, santurs (Iranian dulcimer played with two spoon-shaped mallets), a shahnal (Indian oboe), voices (Japanese Buddhist chanting, harmonic singing such as LaMonte Young does or as heard in Stockhausen's 'Stimmung'). Amplifiers: a heterodyne (voltage controlled filters connected to infrasonic wave sources) which changes tone colors back and forth very slowly. Also, other rather primitive hand-made electronic devices. All these contribute to the everchanging diversity of the ensemble. Close your eyes, relax and musically receive passing clouds, breezes, surging waves. This music is slow as a Japanese tea ceremony and as peacefully full of cheer as ancient scroll paintings." --Yuji Takahashi.
PUNK AND POST-PUNK
COCOCOMA- COCOCOMA LP (goner, usa)
11.98usd/6.03gbp/8.09eur/1284jpy (approx)
*First full-length from full-on Chicago blastophonic garage punks! Here's a near-Sonics riff, exploding in a drum roll into red-faced intense punk rock rant, turning corners in hooks that'll stick in your noggin for days!
HARLAN T BOBO- I'M YOUR MAN LP (goner, usa)
11.98usd/6.03gbp/8.09eur/1284jpy (approx)
*Even after his debut release, too much love, captured the imagination of Memphis' music lovers, Harlan T. Bobo still remains a mystery. Arriving in Memphis nine years ago after traveling a route as circuitous as that of any fugitive, Harlan has been busy endearing himself to local fans and soaking up as much of the city's rich musical history as possible. Instead of shedding light on the man behind the music, his intensely personal lyrics have actually served to help perpetuate his enigmatic persona. However, with the release of his second album, I'm Your Man, one thing about Harlan T. Bobo can no longer remain an uncertainty -- his musical talent is the real thing. It's true, the man with a name that could've come straight from A Confederacy of Dunces can write classic heartbreaker songs with the best of 'em.
Whereas too much love was about a relationship's soul-wrenching dissolution, I'm Your Man is the post-breakup album- dealing with a wide array of emotions -- from fits of false confidence to the comforts of self-delusion to the relapses of despair. In terms of George Jones albums, too much love is Memories of Us and I'm Your Man is The Battle. Accordingly, the musical styles on I'm Your Man are more varied than on his debut. The playful whimsy of the opener, "I'm Your Man," is immediately offset by the unhinged heaviness of "God's Lamb," a powerful, propulsive number that could stand alongside Nick Cave's Book-of-Relevations-styled stompers. The aggressive, distorted voice on "Sick of It" surely can't belong to the same guy who is practically whispering on such fragile, gentle songs as "Baptist Memorial" and "Pretty Foolish Things."
The songs on I'm Your Man were definitely written by Harlan with performance in mind and it shows. There is a theatrical nature to the songs, most noticeable on the monologues and dark cabaret style of "My Life." Fans of the first album should not fear, however, that Harlan has completely changed his style. The majority of the songs on I'm Your Man undeniably contain his signature elements -- tuneful country-fied, nocturnal laments and articulate, discomforting lyrics in the confessional vein. What listener could remain unaffected when Harlan sings remorsefully of babies unborn in "So Bad?" or when he desperately tells an ex-paramour, "you'll wish you'd stayed," on "One of These Days," arguably one of his best songs yet.
The Memphis influence stands out most on the white soul stirrer, "Last Step," which could have been pilfered from Dan Penn's back catalog. It's impossible to be a musician in Memphis and not be inspired by the fascinatingly diverse tradition of the city's musical output. Though his debts are occasionally discernible, his newest ultimately reveals that Harlan is finding his own unique voice. He's already won the collective heart of Memphis, it's time for the rest of the country to discover him. He's too good to be a secret any longer.
DAILY VOID- SURPRISE SURPRISE YOU’VE LOST YOUR EYES 7” (horizontal action, usa) 7.98usd/4.02gbp/5.39eur/855jpy (approx)
*A dissonant barrage of twisted repetition destined to stick to your ribs and give you the creeps, featuring the earliest recordings from these Chicago sickies. Disgustingly infectious, and delivered with dark, ruinous precision, it's a whole new simplified take on negativity, and it hits the nail right on the head.
NOTHING PEOPLE- ARMY OF IDEA 7” (horizontal action, usa) 7.98usd/4.02gbp/5.39eur/855jpy (approx)
*The next menacing installment from the mysterious Nothing People shows another exasperating side to their repertoire with two more earthshaking songs further staking their commanding ascent to the top of the California food chain. These two new cuts straddle the Tubeway Army vs. Suicide schools of thought in such a refreshingly unorthodox manner that you might just tear up all your identification and start life over with a blank slate.
WIZZARD SLEEVE- MOMMY’S LITTLE BABY 7” (horizontal action, usa) 7.98usd/4.02gbp/5.39eur/855jpy (approx)
*Alabama has more than one reason to worry, and Wizzard Sleeve's debut single is a testament to all the toxicity and torturous lineage built up into a vicious compound of corrosion, chemical damage, and overall bad vibes. They have the supernatural nuances and ominous grooves that can brighten any funeral and blacken any rainbow. The only real escape is to surrender your will to their deplorable off-center harmonies stitched into their filthy, deliriant rhythms that are painful to resist, and impossible to forget.
FNU RONNIES- MEAT 7” (ritchie, usa) 6.98usd/3.51gbp/4.72eur/748jpy (approx)
*debut ep by philadelphia’s fnu ronnies… cover printed using someones front-porch screen door, hand stamped label, all around good synthpunkdamage… more mens recovery project than, say, cabaret voltaire for my taste, but pretty killer stuff none the less. limited edition? i’m sure.
AVANT GARDE AND NOISE
TETUZI AKIYAMA- PRE-EXISTENCE LP (bo weavil, uk)
25.98usd/8.55gbp/11.47eur/1820jpy (approx)
*restocked… Tetuzi Akiyama has been a major player on the free music/improv scene in Tokyo for going on 20 years. Pre-Existence first came out on CD as a part of the great 'Wooden Guitar' series from Locust. Akiyama's playing here is one of a minimalist approach, discovering and investigating the empty spaces between each note. He does not follow the Takoma guitar school style of finger-picking, but a far more warped primitive country blues feel, with a meditative quality. You never know where you are going to be led with his guitar, down roads rarely travelled. With his dense tapestry of sounds, Akiyama evokes emotions that at times are uncomfortable, but of real beauty. Open your ears and let the music take you far far out there...
TETUZI AKIYAMA/JEFFREY ALLPORT- LIVE AT THE WESTERN FRONT LP (simple geometry, usa)
15.98usd/8.04gbp/10.80eur/1713jpy (approx)
*The Japanese guitarist Tetuzi Akiyama performs an improvised set as a duo with Canadian percussionist Jeffrey Allport on July 1, 2006. This recording is of the first and only time these two well-regarded improvisers have ever played together. Living on opposite sides of the Pacific, this show became an opportunity for Allport and Akiyama to each perform some of their most advanced techniques in improvised music with a player whose style was truly compatible. Allport approaches every side of his drum, the rim, the snares, the steel clamps, and of course, the skin to produce a challenging repertoire of sounds that defy the drum's gambit, segues from Tibetan drones to electronic clicks and cuts, distant steamships to nearby popcorn. Akiyama's preternatural improvisations along the neck and body of his guitar meditate patiently on each bluesy sound, almost as if his fingers were playing along the surface of a slow-moving river. Every note that Akiyama plays becomes a sensational interruption causing ripples, splashes, and oxbows in the flow of the music. Performed live at a sold-out Western Front, Vancouver's oldest and most significant artist-run venue, Akiyama and Allport propose a rich new vocabulary for music. Two tracks on vinyl mastered by Toshimaru Nakamura. This LP documents an unprecedented collaboration between two modern masters of far left improvisation.
TETUZI AKIYAMA/JOZEF VAN WISSEM- PROLETARIAN DRIFT CD (bvhaast, netherlands)
16.98usd/8.55gbp/11.47eur/1820jpy (approx)
*Tetuzi Akiyama: nylonstring resonator guitar, tuned to Renaissance lute tuning; Jozef van Wissem: ten-course Renaissance lute; Improvisations recorded on 4/2/2003 at Gendai Heights Gallery in Setagaya, Tokyo, Japan.
JOZEF VAN WISSEM- A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME CD (bvhaast, netherlands)
16.98usd/8.55gbp/11.47eur/1820jpy (approx)
*Subtitled: Anonymous Lute Solos of the Golden Age. Jozef van Wissem- Renaissance lute. The work of Dutch born composer and lute player Jozef van Wissem is based on application of mirror images in lute composition. The work is idiomatic to lute tablature of around 1600. The pieces on this recording exhibit a large musical variety, ranging from decidedly peasant dances to refined melancholic forms that were most likely intended for a more refined public. The black side to Elizabethan life in the mythic 'Golden Age' of prosperity, fed by anxieties of disease, religious intolerance and future pessimism resulted in a vogue for the cultural and literary Melancholy cult. It was believed that religious uncertainties caused by the English Reformation and a greater attention being paid to issues of sin, damnation, and salvation, led to this effect. The melancholy man, known to contemporaries as a 'malcontent,' is epitomized by Shakespeare's Prince Hamlet.
JOZEF VAN WISSEM- OBJECTS IN MIRROR ARE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR CD (bvhaast, netherlands)
16.98usd/8.55gbp/11.47eur/1820jpy (approx)
*First solo release by Van Wissem on Bvhaast, 2005 release. Performed by Jozef van Wissem (lute, airfield recordings, electronics), Arnold Marinissen (palindrome percussion on track 7). Though Van Wissem draws inspiration from Renaissance period forms, the use of computer-edited airport recordings fixes these pieces firmly in the now, and his approach to the lute is such that this CD would not be out of place in the John Fahey section of your music collection. Dreamy, oblique and minimal, the music insinuates itself into the listener's mind like a subliminal message or an overheard snippet of conversation. --Pete Gershon, Signal to Noise
JOZEF VAN WISSEM- STATIONS OF THE CROSS CD (incunabulum, netherlands)
16.98usd/8.55gbp/11.47eur/1820jpy (approx)
*New release from baroque conceptualist and improviser, Jozef Van Wissem, who, for more than a decade, has been quietly but surely reinventing the vocabulary of that most unlikely of instruments, the lute. With the exception of the odd Renaissance preservationist context, the lute, which was once the most popular portable instrument in the Western world, has all but disappeared from our musical landscape. Despite the arcane associations of his chosen instrument, Van Wissem is no revivalist; his compositions often marry a deep and self-conscious knowledge of the instrument's weighty history with a rigorous post-modern sensibility that has encompassed everything from appropriation to minimalist free improvisation, electronic manipulation, and the mirrored or palindrome musical structures for which he is perhaps best known. These palindrome compositions, a group of which are collected on Stations Of The Cross, are compositions that, like the words 'radar' or 'wow,' or the phrase, 'Madam, I'm Adam,' read the same forwards or backwards. Each composition progresses through a series of notes to the midpoint of the piece, where the sequence then reverses and the pitches are played in retrograde order back to the composition's starting point. The effect is strange and subtle, and oddly psychological -- there is a sense that time expands and contracts back to the point of origin, while the exact moment of reversal is difficult to detect. Compositional expectations are similarly, subtly undercut and, being that the beginning is always also the end, these pieces tend to come to a close without resolution, which gives them a quietly unsettling, question-like quality. To make things even more interesting, these mirrored structures are often superimposed onto field recordings of airport terminal interiors which are digitally manipulated into mirrored structures of their own. These recordings lend an eerie, impersonal atmosphere, the specificity and contemporary nature of which stands in stark contrast to the timeless, esoteric quality of Van Wissem's gut stringed lutes. Stations is a record of quiet, stately beauty and concept.

THURSTON MOORE/KEVIN SHIELDS/BARRABARRACUDA/MEN WHO CAN’T LOVE- SPLIT LP/2X7” (deathbomb arc, usa)
19.98usd/10.06gbp/13.50eur/2142jpy (approx)
*An elaborate box-set of vinyl, pairing Thurston Moore 3 times with a selection of amazing Los Angeles acts. Box set will include equaly amazing art designed/curated by Britt & Amanda of Not Not Fun. Thurston Moore contributes music that ranges from beautiful acoustic guitar work to fierce noise and charging thud rhythms. Men Who Can't Love is the gang of young LA noise dudes that do the tag team thing like it is the ultimate party. They share the 12" w/ Moore, and hit you over and over with the tagteam efforts of Solitary Hunter, Impregnable, Moth Drakula, Haircut Mountain Transit, Toxic Loincloth, & Privy Seals. Barrabarracuda are the much more friendly sort, but welcome at the same party. Featuring Grace of Foot Village and Amanda of Pochahaunted on fireworks... erm drums and vocals, plus Britt of Robedoor on guitar and Nichole of Child Pornography on keyboard. Their split 7" w/ Moore is definitly the most melodic of the bunch. Kevin Shields (here as Eva Aguila of Gang Wizard & Amy V of Yuma Nora) fuses searing walls of aluminum with angelic harmonies for a tension that evokes pure joy. Their split 7" with Moore is matched with equal amounts joy and angelicism, but in soothing rather than tense manner.
PAULINE OLIVEROS & REYNOLS- MINEXCIO CONNECTION: LIVE AT THE ROSEDALE CAFE LP (roaratorio, usa)
16.98usd/8.55gbp/11.47eur/1820jpy (approx)
*One of the most unexpected yet fruitful partnerships of recent years: in the mid-1990s, Pauline Oliveros, electronic music pioneer and sage of the environmental-drone, began working with Reynols, the prolific and resolutely undefinable Argentinian group. Their first joint effort sent Oliveros' music through the rigours of Reynols' heavily processed studio treatments; The Minexcio Connection: Live! At The Rosendale Cafe finds them collaborating on-stage in real time. Recorded in August 2000 during Reynols' first trek through North America, they offered up a version of "Six For New Time" (originally composed by Oliveros for Sonic Youth's Goodbye 20th Century LP), along with idiosyncratic throat-singing and hypnotic dream/dronescapes. The venue may have been a small cafe in rustic upstate New York, but the sonic results sound like emanations from the deepest of Deep Listening caves under the earth.
METAL
DEAD RAVEN CHOIR- MY FIRSTBORN WILL SURELY BE BLIND LP (aurora borealis, uk)
19.98usd/10.06gbp/13.50eur/2142jpy (approx)
*Recorded in Poland on cheap and archaic Soviet Bloc technology,"My Firstborn Will Surely Be Blind" sees d/r/c in full throttle audio assault with total disregard for all conventions of audio fidelity, with great songs of the 20th Century by artists diverse as Townes Van Zandt, Richard Thompson and Cole Porter torn limb from limb and dragged through Smolken's forest home. Curiously upbeat in parts, though with harrowing and bizarre artwork.

Here's Weird Forest's description:
The most insane black metal release ever !!! Three, yes three vinyl lps of the harshest sounding evil, atmospheric off-kilter black metal. Call it black metal folk. The loudest noisest crazy insane sounding blasts of skree with strange folky melodic undertones of banjo, cello, mandolin, and percussions and the most frightening vocals ever dared to be recorded. Many traditional folk songs shrouded in blasts of white noise armageddon. For fans of twisted, unique, raw black metal with a very bent edge. Pray (no, commit ritual sacrifice) to the underworld that your stereo survives! This release compiles the "Sturmfucklinglieder", "Grand Ravishing Extravaganza", "Sevenfold Songs Of Death", and "Sheath And Knife" EPs, all previously released in very small pressings and all long, long gone!

REGGAE AND DUB
SOUND DIMENSION- MOJO ROCKSTEADY BEAT 2LP (soul jazz, uk)
22.98usd/11.57gbp/15.53eur/2464jpy (approx)
*New compilation of classic recordings from the funkiest group in the history of reggae! Sound Dimension have recorded some of the most important songs in reggae music; songs such as 'Real Rock,' 'Drum Song,' 'Heavy Rock,' 'Rockfort Rock,' 'In Cold Blood' -- all classic songs that have become the 'foundation' of reggae music, endlessly versioned and re-versioned by Jamaican artists since the time they were first recorded to the present day. As the in-house band at Studio One in the late 1960s, Sound Dimension played alongside everyone from The Heptones, Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe, Marcia Griffiths and more. Similar to their U.S. counterparts, The Funk Brothers at Motown and Booker T. and The MGs at Stax, Sound Dimension recorded on a daily basis incredibly catchy and funky tunes and matched by a seamless musicality. Featuring musicians of the calibre of Ernest Ranglin, Jackie Mittoo, Eric Frater, Leroy Sibbles, Don Drummond Jr., Deadley Headley and more; Sound Dimension existed from around 1967-70 and all the recordings featured here were originally released during this period.
SOUND DIMENSION- JAMAICAN SOUL SHAKE VOL.1 2LP (soul jazz, uk)
22.98usd/11.57gbp/15.53eur/2464jpy (approx)
*restocked… The Sound Dimension were the second most important musical group at Studio One Records (after The Skatalites) and in the late 1960s created the funkiest reggae known to mankind. Featuring a classic line-up that included Jackie Mittoo, Leroy Sibbles, Cedric Brooks, Vin Gordon (aka Don Drummond Jnr), Ernest Ranglin, Leroy 'Horsemouth' Wallace and more, The Sound Dimension literally invented the sound of reggae with their unique style. During this period they played on hundreds of hits at Studio One with Jamaica's finest vocalists such as Alton Ellis, John Holt, Larry Marshall, Cornell Campbell, Dennis Brown, Horace Andy, The Heptones, Bob Andy, Marcia Griffiths, Freddie McGregor -- to name a few! The name Sound Dimension came from an echo-box machine that Sir Coxsone Dodd bought in England whilst on tour in 1967 with Jackie Mittoo and The Soul Vendors (on one gig they were even supported by Jimi Hendrix!). On returning to Jamaica, the new in-house band were christened The Sound Dimension, and the distinctive double-time echo on the guitar and keyboards that they created has become at the heart of all reggae music ever since. This is the first- ever collection of the music of The Sound Dimension in the world and features a mixture of classic tracks alongside super-rare singles only ever released in Jamaica.

I-F- FUCKING CONSUMER 2LP (disko b, germany)
39.98usd/20.12gbp/27.01eur/4287jpy (approx)
*warehouse find…classic late-90s electro release!!! in the Netherlands, in the beautiful town of Den Haag to be exact, some neophile named Ferenc (aka I-F) was fed up with the same olde techno movement. This in mind he added some fairly unorthodox dimensions to this gathering, forever changing its course. With primitive electronic equipment Ferenc transferred sounds from the 80s to the here and now. And by chance, he landed a hit. 'Space Invaders are Smoking Grass' is Ferenc's entry to Electro-anthem status. Like Funk never happened. This is family fodder for dance crazes, for lovers of 'alternative' music, for the whole scattered techno community, as well as for the homelistener who likes to smoke a cigar when hearing 'strange' sounds on the sofa. Ferenc's versatile approach to music can't be measured with just this one track. His first full length album on Disko B records proves the point. Fucking Consumer is pretty strong stuff. Electro pure and clear. No nice recycled retro package. It's out of it, sails in its own universe, because it doesn't rely on others. The overall mood is well-tempered, it seems to be playing along some sound history. Next thing you know, Fucking Consumer is exploding into bursts of noise - what a pleasure. Track by track I-F demands the attention of the listener anew.

GD LUXXE- THE 21ST DOOR 2LP (interdimensional transmissions, usa)
14.98usd/7.54gbp/10.12eur/1606jpy (approx)
*restocked… Finding inspiration from the darker side of electronic music of all eras, Gerhard Potuznik has put together a groundbreaking album entitled The 21st Door. Gerhard Potuznik began making music in Vienna in the early 80s, initially as a guitarist. A staunch fan of all things dark and quirky, Gerhard is perhaps the hardest working man in electronic music. From production to songwriting to releasing his music in multiple genres in many countries, this man does it all. With an unfathomable amount of material already released (including his productions with Pulsinger & Tunakan on Cheap as iO, and his production work for Chicks on Speed) it is his G D Luxxe project that is his strongest. With releases as G D Luxxe on Ersatz Audio, Breakin, and Suction, he is dedicated to taking his quality music to as many worthy outlets as possible, but his Factory obsessed full length for IT is a totally different story. Herein we find him exploring his obsessions while crossing so many boundaries: rock (a cover of T Rex included), 1DM, EBM, Italian Disco broken English, electro, techno and beyond. This is fresh music from a true innovator. This is a record sure to cross boundaries and turn heads.
PERSPECTS- MOTORSKILLS 12” (interdimensional transmissions, usa)
11.98usd/6.03gbp/8.09eur/1284jpy (approx)
*2006 release, restocked… From his early days in Le Car to last year's smash 'Flesh and Bone' with the Hacker (highlighting Perspects' vocal prowess), the music of Ian Clark has been making an impact for over a decade. We believe this is Perspects' strongest music to date. With his unified 'Peopleskills' concept, Perspects shares new directions and ideas. This is demonstrated by his heavy vocal presence (sometimes in a Bryan Ferry vs. Brian Eno sort of way) and the incorporation of live drums into his sequenced sound, hinting at a whole new sound and approach. This is apparent in his live performances, which now feature a full drum kit alongside live vocals, analog synthetic drums, and sequencing.
PERSPECTS- PEOPLESKILLS 2LP (interdimensional transmissions, usa)
21.98usd/11.06gbp/14.85eur/2357jpy (approx)
*2006 release, restocked… full length by Perspects, former Partner in Le Car (split into Perspects and Adult.). This is his first full length album that is actually a big surprise. A solid full length electro pop album full of original ideas! A lot of vocal presence (sometimes in a Bryan Ferry vs. Brian Eno sort of way). Very mature album that is probably the highlight of this year for everyone who has some new wave, early electro pop, or early techno in his collection. Check!!
QUANTEC- MOONSTRUCK 12” (echochord, germany)
11.98usd/6.03gbp/8.09eur/1284jpy (approx)
*This is the second release by Quantec aka Sven Schienhammer on Echocord. He also has releases on Styrax Leaves and Statik Entertainment. Sven uses old school hardware synthesizers to make wonderfully dubby techno and ambient tracks -- think Basic Channel, DeepChord or Pole. This is an absolute must-have for fans of the genre.
ALEXANDER ROBOTNICK- A COFFEE SHOP IN ROTTERDAM 12” (endless flight, japan)
11.98usd/6.03gbp/8.09eur/1284jpy (approx)

AEROPLANE- PACIFIC AIR RACE 12” (eskimo, belgium)
11.98usd/6.03gbp/8.09eur/1284jpy (approx)
*Aeroplane is a project by Belgians Vito De Luca & DJ Stephen from Dirty Dancing and Make-Up Club fame. Their first 12" was played by Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas, Mylo, Laurent Garnier and Pete Herbert, amongst others, and created an enormous buzz with the whole Balearic fanclub. Pacific Air Race will certainly receive the same warm round of applause.
PETER VISTI- HEAVEN IS A DISCO 12” (eskimo, belgium)
11.98usd/6.03gbp/8.09eur/1284jpy (approx)
*Space disco? Or cosmic grooves? Balearic it is!! Peter Visti, from Music For Dreams and Mindless Boogie fame, offers us an incredible EP on Eskimo after the wonderful Balearic Love and Paraglide/Berlin releases. Both "Heaven Is A Disco" and "Fighting James" are two amazing tracks in his own unique style. Even more essential stuff for your Balearic ears.
SIRIUSMO- ALL THE GIRLS 12” (exploited, germany)
11.98usd/6.03gbp/8.09eur/1284jpy (approx)
*Siriusmo aka Moritz Friedrich is a Berliner wunderkind with a hypnotizing sound. Everybody who already heard the preview of "All The Girls" on Shir Khan's Maximize! immediately fell in love and now the track comes in new versions with remixes by Yuksek and Tomboy. The track "Wow" was featured on Modeselektor's Boogy Bytes Vol. 03 CD on BPitch -- the original is much faster and Modeselektor turns down the tempo to make it a decent hip-hop stomper.
ADAM SKY VS MARK STEWART- WE ARE ALL PROSTITUTES 12” (exploited, germany)
11.98usd/6.03gbp/8.09eur/1284jpy (approx)
*restocked… this is a cover version of the classic punk no wave song from The Pop Group with original singer, Mark Stewart. Adam Sky is known for Ape-X and Galactic Lover on Kitsune as well as his great remix for Riot In Belgium.
PINK SKULL- GONZO'S COINTREAU 12” (free news projects, usa)
9.98usd/5.02gbp/6.74eur/1070jpy (approx)
*Pink Skull’s Julian Grefe is the wild-eyed, psychedelic stalwart of Philadelphia’s indie dance music scene. An accomplished musician, producer, and DJ with a slew of bands, records and music projects to his credit, Grefe was a resident of the long-running Making Time and [click.] parties and has performed and DJ’ed for cool kids around the globe (see footnote) – as well as for hip, expensive-looking crowds at New York’s Guggenheim Museum and the American Museum of Natural History as part of Flavorpill’s First Fridays and One Step Beyond music series.
In 2004, Grefe teamed up with 611 Records alum and co-conspirator, Justin Geller, their collaboration and mutual love of early avant-techno eventually spawned electro-psych outfit Pink Skull. Grefe and Geller were then tapped to curate the inaugural mix for renegade dance purveyor RVNG INTL's series of DJ compilations Rvng Prsnts and have remixed left-of-center dance tracks for Spank Rock, Plastic Little, Architecture in Helsinki, Health, Lovely Chords, and Martin Matiske.
“Gonzo’s Cointreau” is Pink Skull’s latest mix for the masses, an update of the four-on-the-floor sound with quirky tech house, varietal acid, and retro sounds just trashy enough to keep it freaky. It is the first single off the forthcoming full-length album Zeppelin 3 to feature Daneil Mazone, Billy Dufala of Man Man, Jeremy Gewertz of Jai-Alai Savant and An Albatross, and Boy's Life-r Jon Anderson, now of White Whale. The single features original artwork by rising art-star Matt Leines.

BATTANT- KEVIN [1989] 12” (kill the dj, france)
12.98usd/6.53gbp/8.77eur/1391jpy (approx)
*shop fave restocked… in that little micro novelty trendy market of ours, what have we got in terms of "heavy trends" (aka death) ?? as they say: the flashy electric neon chair of nu-rave or the painless death by minimal injection: dance, feel nothing, fall asleep, never wake-up... Of course, any conformism puts pressure on you to make a choice when you do not have to. Dig a bit : there are a lot of other things around... All this rubbish has not been keen to our long-lasting love affair between rock and electronics (nu-rave is not a love affair, it's bad sex). There has been a few flashes of light: Whitey, Joakim, some of the Metronomy stuff, Asja auf Capri, the swamp funk of Two Lone Swordsmen... Not enough though... So BATTANT then... A proper band, proper songs, and proper electronics; female vocals and electro beats... Some will say "nothing really new", but no dreams at getting a 3 inches square pics in I.D either, just the fusion clonking together perfectly out of the studio they share with the Two Lone Swordsmen and Boardroom crew. Andrew Weatherall being an obvious paternal figure if they (we) need one, it's himself who deliver the remix of Kevin, in his words, "stadium dub version". yeah, Kevin now... First time we heard it, we honestly though it: booty bubblegum punk vs lyrics that would never make it to the BBC. oh, yes, the rumour is true, Chloé, BATTANT's lead singer wrote the lyrics after finding a dusty diary by this Kevin in her new flat...charming. this very peculiar alliance of raw pop energy and mentalillness is backed by Blah which is... hmmmm... more of the same.

DETALLES- HELLO DONEE 12” (kupei musika, usa)
9.98usd/5.02gbp/6.74eur/1070jpy (approx)
*12” single from the duo consisting of Chile's Andrés Bucci and Chicago's techno darling Kate Simko. The record creates a harmonically-sound, minimal techno experience which exits from the norm with its warm tones and composition. To complement their innovative production methods, Kupei enlisted the talents of Pier Bucci (whose previous releases include work on Luciano's Cadenza Records), and Kompakt's sonic ambassador Jonas Bering, providing two very distinct remixes that add to the overall sound aesthetic of this release.
DJ SEGA & BLAQSTARR- HOLLERTRONIX #8 12” (mad decent, usa)
11.98usd/6.03gbp/8.09eur/1284jpy (approx)
* The mighty Hollertronix series rolls on with a yet another new direction. The first Hollertronix on Mad Decent.
Following the popularity of "rockstar" type remixes on the Philly and Baltimore club scenes, we get 5 tracks from young gun producer DJ Sega and Mad Decent staple DJ Blaqstarr. (For more on this phenomenon, see DJ Sega's current Rockstars vs Clubheadz CD).
DJ Sega is a 20 year old walking encyclopedia of club music. He holds down the biggest all-ages rollerink parties in Philadelphia, playing strictly his own productions and remixes; he's got like 200 plus tracks in the tank! The 5 tracks here are part of the cannon that makes the young kids get buck (search youtube for "jamz late night").
DJ Blaqstarr you should already know, he drops a remix of "Smack My Bitch Up," one of his signature crowd crushers. You aren't gonna hear tracks like these anywhere else.
DIPLO FEAT. DEIZE TIGRONA- BANDIDA/ME CHINGA 7” (man recordings, germany)
9.98usd/5.02gbp/6.74eur/1070jpy (approx)
*Deize Tigrona is considered the #1 female baile funk MC from Rio de Janeiro, and "Bandida," backed by "Me Chinga" is 100% original Rio baile funk. The A-side of this 7" is an exclusive collaboration with Philly's Diplo, currently one of the world's hottest producers and DJs. On "Bandida" he fuses the raw energy of baile funk with punk rock riffs. The B-side, "Me Chinga" is produced by DJ Rafael, a long-time Rio de Janeiro baile funk producer.
AYRES & TITTSWORTH- AYRES N TITTIES CD (money studies, usa)
12.98usd/6.53gbp/8.77eur/1391jpy (approx)
*restocked… the scene has been waiting for a proper Baltimore mix. The Rub's DJ Ayres and Baltimore-based Tittsworth (his real last name!) have finally delivered a serious contender. How serious? They go so far as to remake DJ Assault's crossover classic 'Ass N Titties' in the intro (thus the title). The duo digs deep into their impressive Baltimore crates pulling out classic after classic. In addition, Ayres and Tittsworth have released several, best-selling Baltimore 12"s, and they've included many of those exclusives in the mix, as well as many tracks that have solely been circulated amongst East Coast DJs. The classic, the new, the underground... all mixed impeccably? It doesn't get much better than this.
V/A- SECRET HANGOUT 12” (money studies, usa)
11.98usd/6.03gbp/8.09eur/1284jpy (approx)
* A compilation of unreleased tracks produced by a handful of Money Studies affiliates, and the first release in a new series. You get tracks from pocket changers (aka blu jemz), secret frequency crew member eggfooyoung, Turntable Lab Radio hosts snack and c’mish, Left Coast deejay gaslamp killer, blu jemz, and downtempo specialist eliot lipp.
TOM HADES- HORMONES 12” (mbelektronics, belgium)
11.98usd/6.03gbp/8.09eur/1284jpy (approx)
*Tom Hades has been Marco Bailey's studio partner for years, but of course he also makes tracks on his own. On his new MbElektronics record, he shows us more of his versatile production skills. Whereas the A-side is a great electro-tech monster, the B1is a true techno anthem with some trance influences. Hands in the air, that's for sure! The B2 starts off with minimal glitches but evolves into a monstrously heavy break. Almost too good to be true.
V/A- MEMBERS ONLY VOL.8 12” (members only, usa)
9.98usd/5.02gbp/6.74eur/1070jpy (approx)
*The Ron Hardy tribute juggernaut rolls on with two more flashes of disco re-edit enlightenment. A slice of Salsoul scorch in the shape of Loleatta Holloway's 'Love Sensation', paired with the cooler vibe from Chris & Cosey's 'Gardens Of The Pure'. Both tracks represent deep underground Chicago staple sounds, played by the chosen few to the true believers back in the day. Now it's time for the masses to feel...
PROSUMER & MURAT TEPELI- SERENITY 2LP (ostgut, germany)
19.98usd/10.06gbp/13.50eur/2142jpy (approx)
*This is Ostgut Ton's first artist album by Berlin's Achim Brandenburg aka Prosumer and Cologne's Murat Tepeli. If you are familiar with both their works, it won't be unexpected that Serenity is a flawless house album in the truest sense. Rather than a bunch of dance tracks stuck together, it's been carefully compiled to form a union of songs where emotions and excess are laced with a good measure of sexiness. For Achim and Murat, house is a universal language, a matrix for different atmospheres and moods. To cater to different listening situations, both at home and in a club, Serenity is released with two different tracklistings. The CD contains 17 tracks, whereas the double 12" has eight DJ-friendly, extended versions of the CD's most danceable tracks, as well as some exclusive to the vinyl. As a Panorama Bar resident, Achim has a lot of experience in how to move a dancefloor. His sets display the full spectrum of house with classics and newer productions that are well-mixed with a timeless quality. Inspired by their live gigs, Murat started some tracks that he played to Achim, who then selected from them and suggested vocals, lyrics, drum patterns or different arrangements. Subsequently, they finalized the ideas together and recorded the different drum and synth patterns to finish the tracks. Because Serenity also contains each of their solo tracks, they sent everything through a big analog mixing console onto a tape machine to give it a homogeneous and warm feeling. Prosumer and Murat Tepeli love the sound of analog machines, as well as the rough and direct qualities of Chicago house by producers and labels like Ron Trent, Chez Damier, Armando, Trax, DJ International, DJ Pierre, Cajmere, Fingers Inc. and Dancemania. This album also features grassroots tracks, swirling acid lines, and beautiful guest vocals by Elif Biçer. These tracks deal with fury and mourning and illuminate both moments of calm and pandemonium.
PROSUMER & MURAT TEPELI FEAT. ELIF BICER- TURN AROUND 12” (ostgut, germany)
11.98usd/6.03gbp/8.09eur/1284jpy (approx)
*Turn Around is the first single from the forthcoming album Serenity from Prosumer and Murat Tepeli. "Turn Around" is based on a mid-tempo house groove and reveals an endearing pillow talk between Prosumer and female singer Elif Biçer. On the flip, Cassy augments the beats with her own voice. A pumping darkroom dub for the moments without time and space. Pure magic.
DETTMANN/KLOCK- SCENARIO 2X12" (ostgut, germany)
19.98usd/10.06gbp/13.50eur/2142jpy (approx)
*Marcel Dettmann and Ben Klock join forces again with the Scenario EP -- a double 12" containing four brand new tracks as well as a rework of their hit "Dawning." "Scenario" features drums dry as a bone, with metallic percussion and concise effects. "Blank Scenario" is a reduced workout of "Scenario," "Renumber" is a stoic techno beast with a heavy bass, and "Places Like This" is a DJ tool turned bombastic. "Dawning (Revisited)" revives the original with plenty of harmony.
HOLGER ZILSKE- SPOOKY KISSING 12” (playhouse, germany)
11.98usd/6.03gbp/8.09eur/1284jpy (approx)
*This is the first solo effort from Smash TV's Holger Zilske, and it's a smash-hit. "Spooky Kissing" mysteriously billows through its 8 minutes and lives on a few very memorable ghost sounds. On the B-side, Kiki raises the tempo but doesn't destroy the unique midnight atmosphere of the original. Whoever watches the rising sun while listening to the merciless bass line of "Spooky Kissing" will remember the name Holger Zilske.
V/A- SECRET MIXES & FIXES VOL.7 12” (secret mixes & fixes, usa)
9.98usd/5.02gbp/6.74eur/1070jpy (approx)
*volume 7 of the acclaimed underground edits series finds Gay Marvine ready to party again, this time like it's 1979. Prince's 'Party Up' and Herb Alpert's 'Rise Above' are refashioned for your dancing pleasure, along with a great pair of extended edits of instantly recognisable disco anthems which go by the names of 'Don't Stop...' and 'ThingzIDo'.
V/A- SECRET MIXES & FIXES VOL.5 12” (secret mixes & fixes, usa)
9.98usd/5.02gbp/6.74eur/1070jpy (approx)
*restocked… The fifth volume of the acclaimed cult Secret Mixes & Fixes series is dedicated to 2 visionaries : Marvin Gaye & the Electrifyin' Mojo. Legendary Detroit radio DJ the Electrifyin' Mojo would sometimes have a sound-clash segment of his show called Star Wars where he would pit two favourites against each other, playing their best music, and letting the listeners call in and decide the winner. In that vein, the last SMF (V. 4) pitted Prince against Rick James in a revival of the Star Wars battles, but we're still not sure who won. Here we find Montreal disco freak Gino Soccio going up against the timeless Marvin Gaye. Gino has his hottest sing along disco synth cut ‘Remember’ edited for maximum effect, with a bonus instrumental version also included. But Marvin sneaks in with his ultimate spaced out escapist anthem, ‘Funky Space Reincarnation’, with its original 90 bpm brought up into the realms of modern house tempo, hopefully fooling mediocre DJs into actually playing something with soul. The EP rounds out with the knockout punch of ‘Bass Vine’, mashing up The Slits & ‘Heard It Through The Grape Vine’.
A-TRAK & THE RUB- SUNGLASSES IS A MUST: BLENDS 12” (smelly fatso, usa)
11.98usd/6.03gbp/8.09eur/1284jpy (approx)
*Exclusive remixes from the recent A-Trak & The Rub tour." Hip hop mash-ups featuring Outkast, Kanye West, Ying Yang, Pitbull, Yaz, Bloc Party, 2 Live Crew, Lil Keke, Twighlight 22, etc. Like a cream-flavored pop tart stuck in the chicken drawer, this is strictly illegal activity.
V/A- THE CHEDDA 12” (t&a, usa)
11.98usd/6.03gbp/8.09eur/1284jpy (approx)
*Even more club heat from Ayres, Tittsworth & Associates. Do these guys sleep?
Titts kicks off the A-side with Bel Biv Devoe's "Poison" chopped up in his signature style, followed by Dave Nada's "I Like Culo" (pause), a blend of "Culo" by Pitbull and "I Like To Move It Move It" which is way better than it has any right to be. Ayres' track is the one that'll have the kids going nuts tho, as he unveils a slick Bmore version of Daft Punk's "One More Time" (with the requisite Lil Jon shouts sprinkled on top).
B-side is dominated by newcomers or aliases; who can tell anymore? with Top Billin' (ok, this one is real) "U Don Kno Meh," DJ Dub's hilarious and awesome "Set On You" (George Harrison FTW) and Million Dollar Mano's "Lady."
TITTSWORTH & AYRES- OLD BAY SEASONING 12” (t&a, usa)
9.98usd/5.02gbp/6.74eur/1070jpy (approx)
*restocked at a lower price… First release from t&a records, The 'old bay' ep features a wide range of guest talent, including Kenny B (Club Godfather with a long list of classic releases, stretching way back), Nick Catchdubs, Jinxx and more. On this record you will find Tittsworth's hard hitting Bojangles stormer, which is damaging dance floors country to country by big name spinners like Diplo. Also included is the Ayres & Catchdubs collaboration 'Tell Me When To Go', the comedic bass bouncer 'Broke', and throwback bangers '4-Tops' and 'Move On Up'.
ALEX UNDER- TRAPEZONES ERECTOS & EXTRAPEZLO REMIXES 12” (trapez, germany)
11.98usd/6.03gbp/8.09eur/1284jpy (approx)
*Two artistic remixes from Alex Under's 1,2,3, Responda O Trapez 12" that draw a lot of new energy from the original tracks. Alexi Delano & Xpansul present a versatile mix and a talent for the symbiosis of rhythm and sequence. On the flip, Mihalis Safras puts his hands on "Extrapezlo," creating a joyous, Chicago-flavored jacking remix that will make you smile.
MOONBEAM- SPRING STORY 12” (traum, germany)
11.98usd/6.03gbp/8.09eur/1284jpy (approx)
*The Russian duo Moonbeam follow-up their debut record Eclipse with a strong, musical 12". "Slow Heart" is a dreamy piece of techno with melodic stabs -- airy and liquid at the same time. "Something Alive" is stripped-down, rhythmic, and written in a stop-and-go mode, eventually exploding into a supernova of sound. "Spring Story" is full of energy and speed -- a peak time techno track that will make your heart race.
PRINCIPLES OF GEOMETRY- LAZARE CD (tiger sushi, france)
18.98usd/9.55gbp/12.82eur/2035jpy (approx)
*Principles Of Geometry are the French duo of Guillaume Grosso and Jeremy Duval, two bearded cosmic hippie-nerd twins who are obsessed with vintage analog synths, moustaches, NASA videos and the woods. This should already give you an idea of what you're about to listen to. Their second record Lazare is an ambitious album that synthesizes decades of electronic music: incorporating John Carpenter's dramatic minimalism, Terry Riley's smoky loops, Wendy Carlos' synthetic melodies, hip-hop urbanism and Aphex Twin-esque avant-garde electronic tweaking. Nevertheless, there's no nostalgia here -- instead, you are propelled into a future where Sebastien Tellier sings Italo luv music (a new kind of slow-motion Italo disco,) MCs like Cannibal Ox and Hangar18 ride wild beats towards Wagner's Walkyrie, and Jackson meets Boards of Canada on a boat. Here, songs are like pictures -- detailed encephalograms of Principles Of Geometry's moods -- complex and beautiful geometric patterns, a poetry of the infinite. But for them, the most essential aspect of music is emotion, it is the core of everything. Be it layers of melodies or beat avalanches, the goal is always to trigger an emotion, to talk to the mind more than the body. And they do so with such talent that you can always find something new within their songs, some hidden subliminal details. The artwork was supervised by POG with a beautiful cover photograph by American artist Justine Kurland.
V/A- UNDERDOG EDITS VOL.10 12” (underdog edits, usa)
9.98usd/5.02gbp/6.74eur/1070jpy (approx)
*Underdog Edits is back with two great new disco funk edits... The victims this time are Meco Monardo and his "Cantina Band Theme" whilst on the flip it's Revelation's 1981 classic "Stand Up".
JUICEBOXXX AND DRE SKULL- CENTER STAGE 12” (vicious pop, usa)
11.98usd/6.03gbp/8.09eur/1284jpy (approx)
*Less than a year after the release of their debut 12", Juiceboxxx and Dre Skull have raised the bar once again with "Center Stage," a forward thinking slice of vicious, uptempo pop that is as unpredictable as it is formal. Crisp disco hand claps and one pumped up bass line help to push the sound beyond "Sweat" into new territory, while Brooklyn diva Janina and Milwaukee axman Willy Dintenfass add extra layers of sound and ideas.
Juiceboxxx, fresh off tour with Bonde Do Role, throws down super jackin vocals while Dre Skull, just back from a tour of Australia and Asia, conjures up a sonic palette that shapeshifts from shiny to gnarly as the track grows grizzled. Listening to "Center Stage," its clear to see that the duo relishes combing through the annals of electronic dance music, picking up ideas and throwing them at the wall, just to see what sticks.
As the track sprints to the finish line, an unexpected ending takes it's concise pop resolution and aggressively subverts it, pushing it menacingly into the unknown.
"Center Stage" is the second in a mysterious discotheque trilogy, and its hard to see where things will go from here. The night is a harsh mistress, and sometimes man's pursuit of fun takes him to domains he never thought he would enter. Are U Experienced? killer curses! and farley jackmaster funk remixes!!!
HEIDI MORTENSON- DIAMONDS & UNDERWEAR 12” (wired, germany)
11.98usd/6.03gbp/8.09eur/1284jpy (approx)
*This is a limited edition (500 copies) one-sided 12" with handmade engravings and a unique painting on each. The record features three songs in Heidi Mortenson's characteristic style. On "Up From Ocean" you will hear slide guitars and electronic waves that will sail you to an island of paradise. Mortenson does vocal bass and vinyl scratch on "Disco Club" and "Stronger Than This" is a melange of mental conversations by various voices. You're not schizophrenic you're just... distracted.
V/A- DISCO NOT DISCO 12” (white label, usa)
11.98usd/6.03gbp/8.09eur/1284jpy (approx)
*re-worked disco classic´s...loose joints...common sense....tell you today...voices inside my head...killer!
MY COUSIN ROY- FROZEN 12” (wurst edits, usa)
9.98usd/5.02gbp/6.74eur/1070jpy (approx)
*My Cousin Roy returns to the fold for the latest release on Wurst Edits, and what a return it is! Ever since the man kicked off the label with his awesome debut late last year, the label’s become acclaimed for its decidedly different output, and this release proves that there’s no letting up!
“Frozen” harks back to the sounds of Eighties new wave with its drum machine rhythm and synth-fueled bass line, and then that killer sax line comes in and all hell breaks loose! And just who is that mysterious woman telling us to dance? We certainly don’t know, and we could care less, cuz our asses just can’t stop shakin!
