ROCK, POP AND PSYCHEDELIC
SIC ALPS- A LONG WAY AROUND TO A SHORTCUT CD (animal disguise, usa)
12.98usd/6.64gbp/8.46eur/1351jpy (approx)
*After the recording of their debut album, Pleasures and Treasures in 2005, Sic Alps stripped it down to become the duo of Matthew Hartman and Mike Donovan. Their hazy, vintage psych/garage rock sound along with heavy touring of both the U.S. and Europe won them fans around the globe. They recorded a handful of singles & EPs during 2006 and 2007 which are now pretty much impossible to find, or fetching absurd prices on eBay. All of these singles (along with a rare compilation track, and one previously unreleased track) are included here in this convenient, remastered 26-track compilation.
DEMIAN- DEMIAN CD (fallout, uk)
18.98usd/9.71gbp/12.37eur/1975jpy (approx)
*This lost hard-psych classic is in fact the second album by Texan psych legends Bubble Puppy, who'd changed their name for legal reasons. Recorded late at night at the celebrated Record Plant in Los Angeles, it's a stupendous blend of tough rock riffs, pop hooks, glorious melodies and biting psychedelic guitar, but was sorely under-promoted on its original release in 1971, causing the band to splinter the following year.
JASMINA MASCHINA- THE DEMOLITION SERIES LP (staubgold, germany)
18.98usd/9.71gbp/12.37eur/1975jpy (approx)
*This is the debut full-length release by Berlin-based Jasmina Maschina (one-half of the duo Minit). Jasmina Maschina's sonic folk soundscape transports you into the world of a familiar song that you are only too pleased to hear again. In the gorgeousness of the everyday, she melds the most simple and innocent chord progressions of time-honored folk music with a noisenik's attraction to repetition, drone and inventiveness to create the sensation of paresthesia on the skin and mind. The vocals resonate astonishment at the normal wonders of the world, an intensity of just being lucky enough to feel sensation and experience, undertaking the weight of human emotion with a flightful ease. The Demolition Series sounds like an effortless album. Soaring beauty, short rides to nowhere, characters met in the dark, are all in the experience of the artist. A clear view through steely eyes with a touch of innocent mysticism. Guest musicians include Torben Tilly (guitar), Jimmy Trash (melodica), Ari Benjamin Meyers (piano), Anthony Pieretti (drums) and Lucinda Dayhew (voice).
EDGAR BROUGHTON BAND- EDGAR BROUGHTON BAND LP (timeless, luxembourg)
28.98usd/14.82gbp/18.88eur/3016jpy (approx)
*The most conventional of the Edgar Broughton Band's first (and best) three albums, 1971's Edgar Broughton Band finds the group dispensing with the no-holds-barred mania and theatricality responsible for such classics as "Out Demons Out," "Up Yours," and "Apache Drop Out" and concentrating instead on more musical endeavors. It's an approach that arguably captures the band at their very best at the same time as revealing them at their ugliest. The two-part epic "For Dr. Spock" conjures images of Gong, as it drifts closer to space rock than the Edgar Broughton Band had hitherto ventured, while "House of Turnabout" certainly restates the group's free-freak credentials with its rumbling percussion and scything guitars, a second cousin to the roars that punctuated Wasa Wasa and Sing Brother Sing. The heart of Edgar Broughton Band, however, lies elsewhere. The lilting chant "Thinking About You," with its spectral reminders of John Lennon's "Working Class Hero," is certainly one of their most rancorous concoctions, while "Evening Over Rooftops" rides an acoustic guitar as pretty as its flowery lyric, but you know there's something rotten squirming just below the surface, even if you can never quite put your finger on it. The pure pop backing vocals, all "sha-la-la" and "doo-be-doo-be-doo," of course, only add to your unease. And, as that is merely the opening number, you can guess what you're in for over the rest of the album long before you actually get it. ~ Dave Thompson, All Music Guide
AVANT GARDE AND NOISE
SCORCH TRIO- BROLT 2LP (rune grammofon, norway)
27.98usd/14.31gbp/18.23eur/2912jpy (approx)
*Double LP version. This is the third full-length release from New York's free-spirited power trio, Scorch Trio: Raoul Björkenheim (electric guitar), Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (electric bass and electronics), Paal Nilssen-Love (drums and percussion). As with their previous albums Scorch Trio and Luggumt, Brolt is an old school analog recording -- the band set up in one room, instruments and amps miked with vintage microphones, playing live and recording to analog multi-track tape with no overdubs and editing and then mixing down to quarter-inch analog tape. There's a slightly different vibe to Brolt than that of its predecessors, maybe caused by the change of studio or the fact that they specifically set out to make it more of an ensemble recording where all instruments are treated equally. They went into the studio straight after a short, but very hectic tour of Europe and Japan, which may explain the more loose, live feel of many of the tracks. Björkenheim was raised on Hendrix, Zappa and rock music before he discovered Miles, Coltrane, Mingus and Eric Dolphy. He has written film scores and orchestral music and recorded with Bill Laswell, Henry Kaiser, Jah Wobble, Peter Erskine, Paul Schütze, Mats Gustafsson and others. Håker Flaten is a member of The Thing, Atomic, School Days and Free Fall and has his own quintet. He has played with Edvard Vesala, Krakatau and Tony Oxley and many others. Nilssen-Love is the most profiled player on the Norwegian jazz scene. A member of The Thing, School Days, Frode Gjerstad Trio, Atomic and several others, the two most important things for him are energy and creative freedom -- both vital ingredients in the Scorch Trio musical vocabulary.

*restocked… The first of the highly-anticipated Whitehouse 180gm vinyl collection series is imminent! In 2001, Cruise was a result of 3 years of fanatically meticulous preparation, recorded both in the UK by William Bennett and in Chicago by Steve Albini, this high quality limited 2LP showcases what was a new generation Whitehouse sound. Features rare extra instrumental version of title track originally released for DJs.

V/A- DON'T STOP: RECORDING TAP 3LP (numero group, usa)
36.98usd/18.92gbp/24.10eur/3849jpy (approx)
*In January of 2006 the Numero Group found itself sitting three wide on a weight bench in a damp garage. Eight hours later, we peeled out of the driveway with a thirty-seven tape mystery. Though Jeremiah Yisrael's Tap label only issued a handful of 12"s between 1981-83, the tape deck never stopped rolling, producing dozens of lavish songs in disco's last days. From the string-heavy sugar boogie of Jackie Stoudemire and Arnie Love to pioneering raps by Missy Dee & the Melody Crew and the Fabulous 3 MCs, Recording Tap covers a wide swath of New York's all night sound. The triple LP set includes ten bonus tracks, miniature song book, expansive booklet stuffed with photos and memorabilia and a CD copy of the album, all housed in a replica tape box. Includes rare and unreleased recordings by Arnie & the Lovettes, Annette Denvil, Bonnie Freeman, the Fabulous 3 MCs, Missy Dee & the Melody Crew, Magnetism, and Jackie Stoudemire.

SUN RA- NUCLEAR WAR CD (atavistic, usa)
15.98usd/8.17gbp/10.41eur/1663jpy (approx)
*Nuclear War stands as one of the great monuments in the latter part of Sun Ra's enormous oeuvre. It's an LP that by all rights should have been one of his breakthroughs, featuring one of the tightest versions of the Philadelphia-era Arkestra in a program that includes an appealing mix of standards and Ra originals. The title track is arguably to the '80s what 'Space Is The Place' was to the '70s . Ra's anthem for the decade, a piece that perfectly reflected certain apocalyptic aspects of his philosophy and his underlying quest for a better future. Ra thought very highly of this recording. He personally approached Columbia Records, certain that it was a winner, and when they didn?t opt to issue it he reportedly became depressed and bitter. Eventually, Ra sold the music to an outfit called Y Records. Y was a very interesting British independent label whose catalogue included important post-punk LPs by the Pop Group and the Slits, some outstanding reggae and a couple of records of improvised music. In London at the beginning of the '80s, musical worlds were colliding, and people like Steve Beresford and David Toop actively crossed all kinds of genre borders, confusing rock and dub and jazz and noise. Y Records producer Dick O'Dell first put out 'Nuclear War' as a 12-inch single -- the idea of Ra on an extended play disco plate was, in its own way, sheer brilliance! -- b/w the glorious June Tyson vehicle 'Sometimes I'm Happy,' and two years later the full record was issued on Y Records in Italy. But the LP never went into full distribution and as a result the few copies that trickled into circulation became some of the rarest entries in Ra's discography.
SUN RA & HIS ARKESTRA- MUSIC FROM TOMORROW'S WORLD CD (atavistic, usa)
15.98usd/8.17gbp/10.41eur/1663jpy (approx)
*Completely unissued, much-speculated material from their 1960 Chicago-based era. If the Wonder Inn recordings have been much speculated over during the four decades since they were made, a studio date from someplace called Majestic Hall rings only very distant bells, even for those who played on it. Majestic Hall was a fantastic session, with a slightly larger octet incarnation of the Arkestra, including Cohran on cornet, Gilmore again in gorgeous form, Marshall Allen and two other saxophonists: Gene Easton on alto and Ronald Wilson on baritone. Drummer Robert Barry is explosive on the latter track, and as with the Wonder Inn tracks, bassist Ronnie Boykins was the Arkestra's unfailing rudder. Behind it all looms the creative fireball named Sun Ra, concocting ceaselessly creative intros, comping imaginatively, or going without horns on the fragment of 'Interstellar Lo-Ways' that closes the disc. Here are two late-breaking installations from a single season in the story of Sun Ra's Chicago period, each focused on a different aspect of his concept. The Wonder Inn: Arkestra in motion, as part of the community, engaging the underground jazz intelligentsia on the south side. Majestic Hall: the grand scale of Ra's compositional and arranging genius, the heroic efforts of his band. Yet a couple more key pieces in the big puzzle that is Sun Ra's master-oeuvre.
SUN RA & HIS ASTRO INFINITY ARKESTRA- STRANGE STRINGS CD (atavistic, usa)
16.98usd/8.69gbp/11.06eur/1767jpy (approx)
*deluxe reissue in a new O-card pack from the Unheard Music Series -- released in conjunction with El Saturn Records. ...all this considered, Strange Strings, the culmination of all Sun Ra's string studies, is without doubt one of Sun Ra's master works. Strange Strings, standing squarely alongside Sun Ra's other epics of the mid-1960s, Atlantis and Magic City, absolutely shines as his most painterly of expositions in its surface richness and play with deep space and coloration. He has offered no world more strange than this in his entire output as a composer and orchestrator. These explorations are only hinted at in scattered moments on other recordings from this period. The full exercise of his very original and very imaginative powers as musical adventurer and visionary bursts forth in the masterful cosmic clattering of Strange Strings. --Hal Rammel, 2006
SUN RA AND HIS INTERGALACTIC INFINITY ARKESTRA- THE NIGHT OF THE PURPLE MOON CD (atavistic, usa)
16.98usd/8.69gbp/11.06eur/1767jpy (approx)
*The second deluxe Ra reissue in the new o-card format from the UMS, released in conjunction with El Saturn Records is here: Sun Ra rocks out on his ultra-rare 'Roksichord' record, a small group outing from 1970 with an alternate take PLUS three mind-bending, never issued Wurlitzer solos from '64. Long-awaited & available on CD for the first time! …The Night of the Purple Moon is Sun Ra's great 'Roksichord record.' It's also one of his most delightful, upbeat, and accessible outings -- full of bluesy twists and turns, relatively short tracks, and the unforgettable nasal quack of his keyboard. Waxed in New York in 1970 --just after the Roksichord had been introduced -- Purple Moon is one of the classic (and relatively rare) small group Arkestra recordings. Purple Moon was issued on Saturn in 1972; augmenting the original LP is a familiar alternate take of the Arkestra chestnut, "Love In Outer Space." To show something of the origins of Ra's keyboard playing in this period, we have added three incredible home recordings made in 1964, on which Ra pummels a lightly-amplified Wurlitzer electric piano, and on the first of them, he adds the startling sound of Celeste. --John Corbett, Chicago, May, 2007
SUN RA & HIS ARKESTRA- SOME BLUES BUT NOT THE KIND THATS BLUE CD (atavistic, usa)
16.98usd/8.69gbp/11.06eur/1767jpy (approx)
*The third deluxe Ra reissue in the new O-Card format from the UMS, released in conjunction with El Saturn Records is here: a superb reissue of a delicious, seldom heard Saturn Records document from '70 -- replete with two alternate takes of a previously unissued classic AND an 'Untitled' piece from the original '77 sessions... all available for the first time on CD! …Sun Ra's career-long commitment to his Arkestra allowed the pianist and bandleader little time for the elaboration of less populous projects. There were brief, tantalizing glimpses, however, into his small group concept -- including a rash of recordings made in the mid 1970s. There are, for instance, two great double-LPs of quartet music, tenor saxophonist John Gilmore gloriously forward, made for the Italian Horo label in 1978. A year prior, a stripped-down group made a set of studio recordings focused on standard jazz songbook material, as well as some original music by Ra, that was issued on Saturn as Some Blues But Not The Kind Thats Blue. As a special treat, to augment this extremely rare Saturn LP and show how Ra developed the idea for one of his arrangements, two alternative versions of the poignant 'I'll Get By' are included -- taken from a session slated May 3, 1973 by Gilmore. In the distance, the muffled remnant of a previous track appears, taped over on this home recording, the almost in-sync backwards drums providing a low-key element of surreality. --John Corbett, Chicago, October, 2007

JORGE BEN- FORÇA BRUTA CD (dusty groove, usa)
15.98usd/8.17gbp/10.41eur/1663jpy (approx)
*in stock for reals this time, no mix-up’s… first time on CD in the U.S. and first time in the world in over 15 years! A groundbreaking album from the young Jorge Ben -- one of Brazil's most soulful singers ever -- heard here at a pivotal point in his career. Força Bruta is a record that forever transformed Brazilian music with its unique blend of samba and soul -- and it features some tremendous rhythm work from Trio Mocoto -- who bring in a wide variety of percussion techniques to make the whole thing groove. There's an earthy, laid-back feel to the whole set -- one that makes the album feel like a spontaneous expression of genius, even at the few points when larger orchestrations slide into the mix. The album is easily one of Jorge Ben's greatest -- and it's a much heralded Brazilian treasure that's finally getting reissued!
LA CLAVE- LA CLAVE CD (dusty groove, usa)
12.98usd/6.64gbp/8.46eur/1351jpy (approx)
*A lost bit of Latin funk from the early '70s -- the one and only album ever recorded by this hip San Francisco combo. The group's heavy on percussion, keyboards, and wah-wah guitar -- and they riff along mightily with a sound that's somewhere between Chicano soul and blacksploitation soundtrack funk. As an added bonus, Lalo Schifrin also had some mysterious role in the session -- playing a bit of keyboards and supposedly helping on arrangements. The album's a rare treasure in the Verve Records catalog -- easily one of the funkiest dates ever recorded for the label and unavailable for decades.
V/A- THE MUSIC OF ISLAM VOLUME 3 CD (celestial harmonies, usa)
15.98usd/8.17gbp/10.41eur/1663jpy (approx)
*classic 1997 series of Islamic music, 15 volumes spread out over 17 CDs, i’m gonna do my best to stock all of em… From ancient times, Nubian peoples have flourished in the land along the Nile River. But Egyptian projects to dam the river at Aswan have, over time, submerged the Nubian territories along the Nile under water. And with the completion of the Aswan High Dam and Lake Nasser came the inundation of the entire Nubian valley in southern Egypt. As a result, the Egyptian Nubians irrevocably lost what remained of their ancestral lands along the Nile and were forcibly relocated. The resettlement has given rise to a range of social problems, and many aspects of Nubian culture and social organization that previously existed have now changed or disappeared. Despite efforts to survive or revive their culture, at this present point in the epic history of the Nubians, when their ancestral land is lost, and when their language is no longer the medium of either their religion or their government, music may in fact prove to be the best means for preserving something of the ethos of Nubian culture, and for adapting it to further changes in the future. The traditional instruments featured, which are used to accompany Nubian song and dance, include the 'ud (fretless, short-necked lute), tabla (or tabalah, single-headed tapered drum) and tar (or duff, round framedrum). The typical song style is based on alternation of a solo singer with a chorus. Both song and dance are often accompanied by intricate patterns of hand-clapping and foot-stomping. Wedding celebrations, which can last up to a week, are the main social setting for performing traditional Nubian music and dance.
MOHAMMED SALEH ABD AL-SAHEB LELO & HAITHAM HASAN- THE MUSIC OF ISLAM VOLUME 4 CD (celestial harmonies, usa)
15.98usd/8.17gbp/10.41eur/1663jpy (approx)
*classic 1997 series of Islamic music, 15 volumes spread out over 17 CDs, i’m gonna do my best to stock all of em… During the early phase of conceptualizing what would become The Music of Islam, at least one volume was planned to be recorded in Iraq, in the ancient city of Basra. However, the tempest of world politics prevented us from accomplishing this goal. With no legal means to enter Iraq our approach changed to a global search for Iraqi musicians. And to our surprise, in the beautiful port city of Doha in the small Emirate of Qatar on the east coast of the Arabian peninsula (not too far south of the Iraqi border), we discovered an expatriate community of Iraqi musicians, all born in Baghdad and graduates of Baghdad University. The Music of Islam, Volume Four embraces some of the most beautiful Islamic music from Iraq, featuring the 'ud and various percussion instruments, performed by Iraqi master musicians who keep their music traditions alive in Qatar. Born in Iraq in 1389/1969, Mohammed Saleh Abd Al-Saheb Lelo, holds a degree in music from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Baghdad University, with a major focus on the 'ud (oud, a short-necked fretless lute) and qanun (a type of plucked board zither). Haitham Hasan, born in 1389/1969, began playing percussion instruments at the age of nine. In this recording, Haitham is featured on the tabalah (a goblet drum), kasur (a small single-headed drum), riqq (tambourine), tar (a single-headed frame drum), sajat (copper finger cymbals), drenga (like the tabalah but more metallic in sound) and the tabl (a double-headed cylindrical drum).
V/A- THE MUSIC OF ISLAM VOLUME 5 2CD (celestial harmonies, usa)

*classic 1997 series of Islamic music, 15 volumes spread out over 17 CDs, i’m gonna do my best to stock all of em… 'Aissaoua Sufi Ceremony, the first of three volumes in this series recorded in Morocco, captures the public performance of 'Aissaoua rituals, called hadra. 'Aissaoua is the brotherhood comprised of followers of one of Morocco's most well-known and highly regarded spiritual leaders, Shaykh 'Abd Allah Sidi Muhammad Ben 'Aisa as-Sufiani al-Mukhtari (870/1465-933/1526). 'Aissaoua performances work on several levels: for members of the brotherhood, they form part of their spiritual training; for ceremony sponsors they serve to bless the event; and for the individual pilgrim or participant, the ritual provides access to the tangible baraka (blessing) of the Shaykh (Arabic Sheikh), which can be activated for purposes of healing and guidance. The trance possession which occurs during the hadra is the most dramatic manifestation of this therapeutic function of the performance. The baraka which effects these transformations is activated and brought into the hadra by means of recitations, singing and music, all of which is traditionally featured on this double length recording. Perhaps Parsons has captured even more than the Islamic music represented here, like, the transcendence of baraka from Shaykh ben 'Aisa for all who listen.
THE GALATA MEVLEVI MUSIC AND SEMA ENSEMBLE- THE MUSIC OF ISLAM VOLUME 9 CD (celestial harmonies, usa)
15.98usd/8.17gbp/10.41eur/1663jpy (approx)
*classic 1997 series of Islamic music, 15 volumes spread out over 17 CDs, i’m gonna do my best to stock all of em… Sufism, the mystical branch of Islam, has long had a tradition of art music, and one of the most celebrated mystical traditions in the world, that of the Mevlevi dervishes, evolved in Turkey. Mevlevi or Mawlawiyah music, developed in the VII/13th century and nurtured by several centuries of sultans, poets, and musicians, remains arguably the greatest Turkish contribution to the music of Islam. Although this music is the focus of this volume its influence is also strongly felt in volume 14. Tracks 1-6 in this volume represent a complete sema ritual, and other rituals of mystic Mevlevi music are included as well. As a branch of Sufism, the Mevlevis practice the ritual called zikr (Arabic dhikr) -- an ecstatic ceremony of invocation and remembrance of God through, among other things, the repeated chanting of his many names. The zikr is practiced by Sufis throughout the Islamic world, and it has been noted that even the Turkish sema is a specific subdivision of this genre of ritual. The Mevlevis also present their mystical music in what might be viewed as a kind of concert suite (tracks 7 and 9). Track 8 is a prelude of sorts that introduces the mode used in the final suite. Each suite is united by a different mode. In every case, the music draws its inspiration from the text, and its structure from a sophisticated set of modes, rhythms, and traditional forms.
THE GALATA MEVLEVI MUSIC AND SEMA ENSEMBLE- THE MUSIC OF ISLAM VOLUME 10 CD (celestial harmonies, usa)

*classic 1997 series of Islamic music, 15 volumes spread out over 17 CDs, i’m gonna do my best to stock all of em… Many orthodox Muslims have traditionally held that music is generally detrimental to the listener's religious life, and as a result there is relatively little sacred music in Islam. But there is some. Central to Islamic life is the chanting of the holy scripture, the Qur'an. Two associated works, the call to prayer known as ezan (adhon) and the tekbir, are known throughout the Islamic world, and are also performed in a highly stylized, richly embroidered style of chant. These prayers are the subject of this volume. A further prayer, the mevlud (mawlid) and regional prayers for the month of Ramadan are reserved for special occasions. All of these sacred works are sung/recited (the distinction becomes almost a semantic one in these performances in Arabic, of course; but difference in pronunciation and inflection have led to distinctly regional styles of performance. The five reciters recorded in this volume are all based in Istanbul, Turkey, where the tradition of Qur'anic chant is particularly strong. The sound of the Qur'an recitation can be a striking one for Western ears. The modes can range from the slightly piqant to the starlingly exotic. But it bears repeating that, for all the musical interest in these performances, this is basically not music at all. It is prayer; and like the chanting of the Buddhist monks of Tibet, has as its ultimate aim not a musical goal but a spiritual one.
ABDEL HADI HALO & THE EL GUSTO ORCHESTRA OF ALGIERS- ABDEL HADI HALO & THE EL GUSTO ORCHESTRA OF ALGIERS CD (honest jon’s, uk)
18.98usd/9.71gbp/12.37eur/1975jpy (approx)
*shop favorite, restocked… Chaabi ("of the people") has its roots in the Andalusian music of Moorish Spain, spreading to North Africa with exiled Jewish and Moorish communities; but it really took off in the music schools, parties and bars of occupied, post-WWII Algiers, where its Andalusian, Middle Eastern and North African lineage fused with the Mediterranean soundtrack of that era -- chanson, jazz, snatches of tango, a little boogie-woogie. A chaabi band combines traditional instruments such as the quanoun (or zither), mandole, oud, gambar (a stringed turtle shell), bendir and derbouka (types of drum); together with the piano, flute, banjo (brought to Algiers by American GIs), violin (played upright on the lap to save space in crowded venues), accordion and bongos. With subject matter ranging from God to pretty girls, the songs often touch on taboo issues. For this recording, the Abdel Hadi Halo & The El Gusto Orchestra of Algiers includes four singers -- joined in chorus by the voices of the entire orchestra and five-man banjo, percussion and violin sections. The scale and organization are thrilling; the music is swirling and improvisatory, surging from the haunted to the bluesy, the devotional to the knees-up. This album was recorded on the tilting fifth floor of the Conservatoire d'Algiers, in a room overlooking the sea on one side, and the Casbah on the other: the orchestra was recorded live in full flight -- all together, in continuous takes.
CILIBRINAS DO ÉDEN- CILIBRINAS DO ÉDEN CD (nosmokerrecords, spain)

*shop favorite restocked on cd, the vinyl is no longer in print… Rita Lee of Os Mutantes and her friend Lúcia Turnbull's first outside project, these recordings were done for Philips in 1973. Cilibrinas Do Éden have played at Os Mutantes show in May 1973, at Palácio de Convenções do Anhembi, in São Paulo. It was Cilibrinas' first gig. At this show, Rita and Lúcia played with all the Os Mutantes backline, the show appeared to be a psychedelic edge with Rita and Lúcia dressed like some outside aliens for that time. They also dressed in colored clothes and feathers like a progressive rock band. Never officially released on vinyl or CD, Now a group of Brazilian fans with European residence pick the recordings and put them in this deluxe vinyl format, with only 500 numbered copies done. Also available in papersleeve CD in the same amount of copies. This release contain also two rare outtakes from Os Mutantes. You will certainly dig this if you like Mutantes: these recordings are a mix of the psychedelic Os Mutantes with some glam-rock freakness. Fantastic, professionally remastered sound, unbelievable material for all the Os Mutantes fans, and one of the best lost albums of Brazilian psychedelia!
GROUP DOUEH- GUITAR MUSIC FROM THE WESTERN SAHARA CD (sublime frequencies, usa)
17.98usd/9.20gbp/11.72eur/1871jpy (approx)
*cd reissue of the very first Sublime Frequencies lp, which sold out in an instant in early 2007. If you think you've heard all the great electric guitar styles in the world, think again. This Saharan sand-blizzard of fine-crushed glass will grind your face to a bloody pulp. Group Doueh play raw and unfiltered Saharawi music from the former colonial Spanish outpost of the Western Sahara. Doueh (pronounced "Doo-way") is their leader and a master of the electric guitar. He's been performing since he was a child playing in many groups before finally creating his own in the 1980s. Doueh says he's influenced by Western pop and rock music especially Jimi Hendrix and James Brown. His sound is distorted, loud and unhinged with an impressive display of virtuosity and style only known in this part of the world. His wife Halima and friend Bashiri are the two vocalists in the group. Sahrawi songs are from the sung poetry of the Hassania language. The music is based on the same modal structure as Mauritanian music, however, Doueh's style is a looser appropriation infused with a Western guitar scope, one that relies, in his words, as much on Hendrix as it does traditional Sahrawi music. It also adds a playful pop element that rarely filters through in this region. Doueh has turned down countless offers from Morocco and Europe to release his music but he decided to offer Sublime Frequencies access to his homemade recordings and photo archive for this amazing debut. CD reissue of the first Sublime Frequencies LP release. Standard Sublime Frequencies 8-page CD insert includes great photos of the musicians and liner notes by Hisham Mayet.

*The Union Solidarity & Development Association (USDA) has grown to become one of the most pervasive organizations in Burma, claiming over 22 million members (nearly half the country's population). Very little is known of the USDA to the outside world, but it has become embedded throughout the social infrastructure of the state. Its widely-published statutes expressing the importance of state sovereignty and public solidarity can be found in all mediums throughout the country: newspapers, television, billboards and radio broadcasts. Known as the "Three Main National Causes," "Four-Point People's Desire," "Seven Point Road to Democracy" and "Twelve Political, Economic and Social Objectives," each broadcast day begins with their recitation. Most of the recordings featured in this radio collection were captured in Yangon during March and April of 2007. With the authorities attempting to control all information coming into or leaving the state, rarely does the world catch a glimpse inside Burma. This is a special opportunity for listeners to delve behind the headlines and into the airwaves; to hear for themselves the sounds, rhythms, and voices of urban Burma's radio experience, unfiltered by the international press or state-spokesmen. Myanmar's Voice broadcasts nearly 24 hours a day across much of the country, playing an assortment of Burmese classics; USDA pledges; and recitations of articles published by the state-run The New Light of Myanmar Times. Due in part to the near-blackout of all foreign music on state airwaves, the few FM stations that do exist in Yangon and Bago divisions, transmit a rather bizarre assortment of music from 7am to 9pm: synth ballads, hip-hop jingles, and internationally popular songs re-recorded in Burmese. This release also features assorted tracks recorded between 1994-2002, highlighting many wonderfully strange and beautiful pop, folk, and classical music styles. There are vast resources easily available to anyone interested in learning more about Burma or the USDA; this recording is simply intended to showcase the extraordinary sounds rarely heard beyond its borders.
TZOTZILES- PSALMS, STORIES AND MUSIC CD (sub rosa, belgium)
16.98usd/8.69gbp/11.06eur/1767jpy (approx)
*reissue of these field recordings made by Thierry Zéno in the Tzotzile community in Chiapas, Mexico, originally released by Sub Rosa in 1999. This is a unique document that includes rare ritual music, psalms, dialogue and stories of revolt from the last descendents of the Mayan culture. For the past 20 years, Belgian author and filmmaker Thierry Zéno has regularly visited the Tzotzile community that can be heard on this record, archiving and filming. Because he is accepted as "the man who makes pictures," and has made a point of showing the preceding year's film on each of his visits, he has compiled a survey of prime importance. A few of the most important rituals in the life of this community are offered here -- including the music for the Day of the Dead, the music heralding All Saints' Day, The Transfer of Power (chant of authority changing hands), sanctifying rituals, some dialogue in the language of the Maya, field recordings of Christmas night and Carnival and a fragment of speech of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation. Who are the Tzotziles? Some 150,000 Tzotziles live in the high plateaus in the state of Chiapas. They form, with the Tzeltales, a closely-related tribe, one of the most prominent Indian communities in Mexico. Of Mayan extraction, they retain a traditional life comparatively devoid of Hispanic influence. The Tzotzile religion is a syncretic fusion of Christianity that was imposed on them and their surviving ancestral beliefs. They venerate not only heaven and earth, but also the statues of the saints that are believed to be more than idols with non-Indian faces. They dress them up in clothes and jewels, wreathe them in flowers, burn incense to them, cover them in oil and make offerings of alcohol, and, more recently, of Coca-Cola and Pepsi -- the most expensive of drinks. The traditional Tzotzile orchestra is made up of instruments of their own fabrication -- harps, guitars, drums, little fiddles, and water pipes that mimic bird song. An incredibly important and poignant release, documenting the patchwork remnants of a completely unique culture that still exists beyond time and recollection.
REGGAE AND DANCEHALL

DUBSTEP AND GRIME
DARKSTAR- NEED YOU/SQUEEZE MY LIME 12” (hyperdub, uk)
11.98usd/6.13gbp/7.81eur/1246jpy (approx)
*On their first release for Hyperdub, Darkstar donate two slices of juicy, tingling, infectious vocoder love that will have you leaking oil everywhere. "Need You" showcases their refined ear for a catchy melody -- a vocal earworm with some serious robot romance and silicon sadness. UK garage meets Daft Punk meets Roger Troutman, or a body-popping 1982 Burial. "Squeeze My Lime" is a tangy synthesis of dub and hip-hop from another dimension. Darkstar has the Hyperdub seal of freshness.
V/A- TEMPA ALLSTARS VOL.1 12” (tempa, uk)
12.98usd/6.64gbp/8.46eur/1351jpy (approx)
*restocked… The first volume in the Tempa Allstars series. Ever since Skream's "Midnight Request Line" single blew up on the grime/dubstep scene and rocked the worlds of open-minded DJs across the board, the interest in Tempa has been unstoppable. V/A- TEMPA ALLSTARS VOL.3 2X12” (tempa, uk)
19.98usd/10.22gbp/13.02eur/2079jpy (approx)
*restocked… The third volume in the Tempa Allstars series, originally released in 2006. Tempa present an arsenal of bass-bombs for the dubstep dancefloors, featuring established Tempa artists Skream and D1 alongside producers Headhunter, N-Type and Caspa. From the emotive strings of D1 and the heavy repetitive grooves of N-Type, right through to the Detroit pads of Headhunter and the sick bass assault of Caspa, this EP has something for everyone.
KODE9, BENNY ILL & THE CULPRIT- FAT LARRY'S SKANK REMIXES 12” (tempa, uk)
12.98usd/6.64gbp/8.46eur/1351jpy (approx)
*restocked… Originally released in 2006. The original "Fat Larry's Skank" (produced by Kode9, Benny Ill, & The Culprit) was one of the defining tunes of early dubstep, a highlight of pioneering DJ Hatcha's now-legendary sets. Released in 2002, highly sought-after, and long unavailable, it is featured here as the flip to Kode9's awesome 2006 remix. Interspersed with the dialogue from the original, Kode9 strips it down on the remix with an ominous one-note bass line and haunting melodica.
SKREAM- SKREAMISM VOL.3 2X12” (tempa, uk)
19.98usd/10.22gbp/13.02eur/2079jpy (approx)
*shop favorite, restocked… This is the third volume in Tempa's Skreamizm series, originally released in 2007. For this volume, Skream heads straight for the dancefloor with the fresh "Losing Control" heading down a techy 4x4 route. He also unleashes two of the most in-demand dubplates of recent times onto the public -- "Chest Boxing" and "Make Me." Completing this fresh double pack, fans will be pleased to find the vocal version of anthem "Check It," featuring the ragga vocal talents of Warrior Queen, finally making it onto wax.
HOUSE, TECHNO AND DISCO
GUI BORATTO & MARTIN EYERER- THE ISLAND 12” (audiomatique, germany)
12.98usd/6.64gbp/8.46eur/1351jpy (approx)
*Brazil's Gui Boratto and Germany's Martin Eyerer present two hot new productions on Audiomatique. "The Island" features easy, jakking beats which skip amongst a rousing synth melody. This is half club track, half open-air magic. The softer synth theme of "The Beach" seems derived from classical piano roots. A beautiful contrast occurs between melodies and the crisp crunch of claps and kicks which underpin the track. This is an unmissable package and the first collaboration between these two highly-acclaimed producers.
ROBERT BABICZ- DARK FLOWER 12” (audiomatique, germany)
12.98usd/6.64gbp/8.46eur/1351jpy (approx)
*Robert Babicz presents his fifth Audiomatique release. "Dark Flower" is a shiny groover accompanied by a beautiful remix from Rotterdam-based techno veteran Joris Voorn. "Dark Flower" showcases a dry but funky groove construct with melancholic and deep synths. "Spiralboogie" slowly builds, having the funk in the trunk while fully focused on simple, reliable qualities. Joris Voorn's mix perfectly combines floating harmonies with a thrilling drive. Simply irresistible.
ADULTNAPPER- AUDIOMATIQUE VOLUME 2.1 12” (audiomatique, germany)
12.98usd/6.64gbp/8.46eur/1351jpy (approx)
*12" vinyl version, part 1. Artists include The Viewers, Robert Babicz, Joel Mull, Mikael Jonasson.
TIM GREEN- REVOX 12” (dirty bird, usa)
12.98usd/6.64gbp/8.46eur/1351jpy (approx)
*At the ripe old age of 22, England's Tim Green already has five releases on Germany's esteemed Four:Twenty label (as TG), and more on the way to Ritchie Hawtin's Plus 8 imprint (as Needles). Now, Dirtybird has nabbed this youngster! At the heart of 'Revox's unshakeable groove is a deceptively simple chord sequence. It swells and recedes, climbing octaves then resetting itself, as almost-discernable vocals mutter and twist in the borders. It wouldn't be a Dirtybird track without that glorious dancefloor surprise -- an explosion of bells and squirming bass rounds out 'Revox's second half, setting the stage perfectly for the original chord's triumphant return. On the flip side, Dirtybird's own Justin Martin continues his mastery of the 808, turning in a remix that will rattle nails out of subwoofers and asses out of their panties. Drop this straight into your favorite club's soundsystem, then watch its effect on the room from the very first bass drop. Whether you're trying to peel dancers off the bar at 10 pm or looking to tip the dancefloor into frenzy mode at 3am, his remix delivers every single time.
SWEET N' CANDY- THE WICKED KEEPER 12” (district of corruption, germany)
12.98usd/6.64gbp/8.46eur/1351jpy (approx)
*restocked… Sweet n' Candy brings a very well rounded ep to DoC. Rico Henshel (aka Sweet n' Candy) is another techno veteran who needs little introduction. The Wicked Keeper ep also features a remix by DoC label boss, Aaron Hedges, and Beaner (who is also soon to release his 2nd record on Rekids -- Radioslave's label).
EDUCUTION- TING CHUGGY VOLUME 2 12” (d1, ireland)
12.98usd/6.64gbp/8.46eur/1351jpy (approx)
*Educution's disco mission continues into volume 2 of his Ting Chuggy series. Opening with 'Screaming Swan,' an infectious monster of a track bearing the hallmarks of a classic house anthem. At its onset listeners of the more intellectual variety may find its relentless screaming somewhat disconcerting, but we are confident that by its climax the wiggle of hips will triumph over the general thought process. Dancefloor tests on this number have resulted in a 3:4 bass to sweat ratio and a bounce rate increase of 99.99% when compared with other leading brands. Side A finishes with 'Locked Swan 1' the first of 2 pitched up remixes where our swan gets faster and angrier over a monstrous kick that will push the limits of any system and keep it there for as long as deemed fit (it's a locked groove!). 'Reloveyoution' gets side B off to a deep chuggy start with bass, strings and beats pushed in layers through the filterbank eventually exploding out the other side. 'Yer Aul One Loves This' although being dedicated to your mother has attracted the attention of Ben Sims, demonstrating that beefy filter shredded disco will always be right at home in technoland at +8 (that's what the sliders for kiddies!). Volume 2 concludes with 'Locked Swan 2.' More avian locked groove action in pure house bounce mode.
BECKETT & TAYLOR- WORLD OF ME 12” (hand on the plow, uk)
11.98usd/6.13gbp/7.81eur/1246jpy (approx)
*New Hand On The Plow madness featuring two Cristian Vogel remixes. The sexiest alien r'n'b madness on the first side from the mad scientists Beckett & Taylor. Things toughen up on the flip with two storming techno workouts from C.Vogel.
LASZLO BECKETT- PLOWTRAX VOL. 1 12” (hand on the plow, uk)
11.98usd/6.13gbp/7.81eur/1246jpy (approx)
*Laszlo Beckett has been let out on day release by his producer partner Steve Taylor to release his first solo Hand on the Plow record -- 'Plowtrax Vol. 1.' Wandering dazed in Steve's absence, Laszlo has knocked out this confusing and brilliant ode to house and techno music. These simpleton tracks are gagging for the dancefloor. 'Guitar Beat Track Parts 1& 2' launches us into the fragile mental state of this release, with Laszlo recording and performing this 'Care in the community P Funk' track with his old garage band instruments. This is Paul Johnson, with guitars in the basement accompanied with 'special needs' James Brown screaming. 'Bleep Me Daddy' uses patterns correlated from Laszlo's last psychiatric assessment... it's clear he still has a way to go. This tough, distorted workout builds with no second opinion, perhaps a sweaty jack is all the doctor should order. 'Keep Counting' ends this cracking release and returns us to the safety of our own frightening sanctum. Wearing a sort of Carl Craig straightjacket, 'Keep Counting' notches up the numbers of recent human horrors.
SPANDEX- WHATS WRONG WITH YOU 12” (hand on the plow, uk)
11.98usd/6.13gbp/7.81eur/1246jpy (approx)
*Continuing from his latest success on Cristian Vogel's Sleep Debt label, Spandex dusts off his glad rags and once again pimps his wares for Hand on the Plow. Spandex has a knack of turning lazy mumbling into the funkiest dancefloor tracks out there. 'Whats Wrong With You' does this brilliantly with burbling soul and stuttered blues funk, all wrapped up in his skintight production secrets. This is house music for the educated tart. Spandex manages to squeeze so much slutty funk into this one track that it is at risk of overflowing at times. Get your cups out. 'Marauding' concludes the A-side with an elastic twang of electro funk. More neurotic than his more familiar 'dancing tramp' sound, this track shows that Spandex is comfortable in more than one style. He's comfortable in two. 'Too Tight' begins and ends the B-side with a knickerless twopenny whore of a techno track.
KHAN- WHO NEVER RESTS REMIXED VOL.1 12” (i’m single, germany)
11.98usd/6.13gbp/7.81eur/1246jpy (approx)
*restocked… Can 'Khan' Oral, the international all-genre performer and 'man who never rests' visionary launches his new project I'm Single, a 12" record label as a new platform for him and his worldwide network of musicians and friends. Khan, renowned for his standing between the worlds of electronic and classic songwriting, glamour and deconstruction, ecstasy and quality plans with I'm Single to support his artistic vision with originality and creativity that will continue his goal of tearing down the walls of mono-culture and single style approach standardization in the world of music. The path of I'm Single is not a trend or artistic turn that Khan has just picked up on. His roots in the first techno generation on labels like Force Inc./Mille Plateux, Harvest EMI, Matador Record, Smile Communications or Cologne Liquid Sky confirm his artist credibility in creating cult classics. In the early '90s, Khan moved with Jimi Tenor to New York, creating multiple 12"s and projects, i.e. Bizz O.D., El Turco Loco, 4E, Kid & Khan. The I'm Single debut 12" is comprised of exclusive remixes out of Khan's last studio album Who Never Rests on Tomlab. DJ Kaos famous for remixing !!! and Roxy Music has produced a German 'Kraut-trance' pop version of 'On The Run.' Fabian Stall, also known as Zero Cash (Television Rocks, Aggro Colgne), is represented with a flaming down-beat ballad of 'Favor After Favor.' Also, the techno snob Dirk Leyers presents a cryptic dark dance club track, 'You Like To Party?'
ZERO CASH & KHAN- CHITIN BODY 12” (i’m single, germany)
11.98usd/6.13gbp/7.81eur/1246jpy (approx)
*restocked… Chitin (C8H13O5N) is a long-chain polymer of a N-acetylglucosamine, a derivative of glucose, and it is found in many places throughout the natural world. It is the main component of the cell walls of fungi, the exoskeletons of arthropods, such as crustaceans (like the crab, lobster and shrimp) and the insects (including ants, beetles and butterflies) [Wikipedia]. Here's the second outing on I'm Single with a deep disco-rawk 12" in shiny black leather. Written & produced by Zero Cash (Television Rocks/Cologne) and Khan (Captain Comatose/I'm Single) who have teamed up before. After the smashing debut on IMS with 'Who Never Rests Remixed Vol.1' including the DJ favorite 'On The Run - Kaos Mix' and the pop jewel 'Favor After Favor' comes the appropriate follow up with 'Chitin Body.' This is a disco-ball-sized Scarab. A motorcycle gang vandalizing the dance floor. A night out spinning chitin records at Panoramabar.
V/A- BERGHAIN 02 PART II 12” (ostgut, germany)
12.98usd/6.64gbp/8.46eur/1351jpy (approx)
*Marcel Dettmann mixed the second installment of Ostgut's Berghain mix CD series, and these are four exclusive tracks that comprise a two part set. "Native Rhythm Electric" possesses subtle, rhythmic modulations, analog hiss, and a reduced, dirty sound design. Samuli Kemppi contributes "Vangel," probably the most direct and kicking track in this series and 100% pure techno -- strum & drang that heralds a rave apocalypse by using a massive bell riff.
V/A- DEAD MAN'S HAND 2LP (poker flat, germany)
19.98usd/10.22gbp/13.02eur/2079jpy (approx)
*Double lp version. This is the sixth compilation from the world-renowned and continually expanding Poker Flat imprint. Just like the notorious dead man's hand in a high stakes all-nighter, this release is full of carefully-judged mind games and more than a few winning surprises. Compared to previous Poker Flat albums, Dead Man's Hand takes a deeper route, reflecting the label's latest developments. Featuring Jeff Samuel, Clé, Steve Bug, Dan Berkson & James What, Ryo Murakami, D'Julz and Guido Schneider & Florian Schirmacher.
KREON & LEMOS- LOOKOOSHERE 12” (resopal red, germany)
12.98usd/6.64gbp/8.46eur/1351jpy (approx)
*Following the prodigious success of the Kreon & Lemos Lookooshere EP, Resopal Red is proud to present the remixes of the anthem. We're not sure where and how all the guys find their obscure sounds, but here are the remixes by Wighnomy Bros, Anthony Collins and Art Bleek. This is some essential re-edit, re-arranged and remixed cosmic-disco or Greek-minimal boogie. First are Wighnomy Brothers! Unexpected as always the Jena-based duo shows off with a mix that rolls up the theme from somewhere underneath and reminds us of all those wonderful parties we used to have and the parties we're up for. Art Bleek transforms the gorgeous original into a deep and laid back music monster. The Paris-based talent delivered a long evolving version with his own personal imprint while Anthony Collins is squeaking us into blissful happiness with his 10 minutes percussive, minimal rhythm version on the b1 which turns the track into a highly intoxicating floor-filler.
MAELSTROM- EDITS EP #1 12” (solardisco, uk)
12.98usd/6.64gbp/8.46eur/1351jpy (approx)
*After ruffling a few feathers with his Metro Area edit late last year, Glasgow-based Maelstrom returns, scissors in hand, with a three track EP of sure fire peak-time disco edits designed for the dancefloor. Despite being a relative newcomer to the scene, fans of his output are gathering fast, and the list of admirers already includes James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem), Prins Thomas, Lindstrom, Todd Terje, Rune Lindbaek, Pete Herbert & Optimo (the list goes on and on). With releases scheduled later in the year for such influential labels as Eskimo, Mindless Boogie and Prins Thomas' Internasjonal label, this EP looks to set the standard to which Solardisco means to go on.
JULI HOLZ- TRÄNEN AUF DEM DANCEFLOOR 12” (stil vor talent, germany)
12.98usd/6.64gbp/8.46eur/1351jpy (approx)
*After what could be described as Stil vor Talent's hit single '3 Tage Wach,' the latest addition to Oliver Koletzkis versatile label, Juli Holz, shows just how diverse Stil vor Talent really is. Its all about good music -- without any genre or style boundaries! Juli Holz is a singer with a great uncompromising voice and a superb feel for the dancefloor. As Zweiekkenkreis she already had a successful project in 2005 getting great reviews in De:Bug and Raveline as well as playing many gigs around Germany. Now she's back with her first solo single: Tränen auf dem Dancefloor ('Tears on the Dancefloor'). The EP starts of with the title track, a wonderful electro pop anthem with an analogue bassline and some subtle synthies. However, her clear voice is the main object of desire here describing the beautiful chaos that is clubbing. Sweet and pumping! Then there's 'Angst' ('Fear'), a darker play on the poppy melodies that keeps grooving on a more electro-clashy bass and a grooving loop. 'Wo bist du?' ('Where are you?') finishes off the EP -- an introvert piece that is both disturbing in its arrangement and beautifully rocking with a 2-step style snare-laden beat. Deep and moving! These three tracks are Electroclash 2.0, sounding how electro pop should sound in 2008. But that's not all: the vinyl version comes with two remixes. First up is Berlin-based producer Johnjon with his version of 'Angst,' where he stays true to some main elements of the original as well as Juli's vocal and builds a subtle minimal loop below it. Some nicely arranged effects mark the breakdown that perfectly anticipates the simple, yet grooving beats. After that well-known producer Daso is up, who turns 'Wo bist du?' into a minimal house monster. Delaying Juli's voice and re-arranging her lyrics, the track also takes in the Detroity elements of Juli's originals and highlights them even more. Very oldskool!
H.O.S.H.- GRÜNANLAGE/BLAUPAUSE 12” (stil vor talent, germany)
11.98usd/6.13gbp/7.81eur/1246jpy (approx)
*Producer Holger Behn aka H.O.S.H. is back on Stil vor Talent with his third release and second 12" on Oliver Koletzki's imprint. His latest two tracks are all about house music, while always keeping a strict eye on the dancefloor. It starts with the tech-house anthem 'Grünanlage,' the name of a Sunday afternoon open air in H.O.S.H.'s hometown Hamburg that he co-organizes. The tune features a great clappy snare and some wonderful Balearic guitar melodies, which swing over the fast loop. This tune is going to put a smile on your face wherever you are. On the flip there is 'Blaupause,' which translates as 'blueprint' and is a dreamy house-y pusher that keeps grooving with its synthie-stabs and warm bassline. Later in the track H.O.S.H. adds an oldschool piano that pushes the track into another state with its drifting melody. It reminds us of so very many great rave moments. However, H.O.S.H. never gives in to the temptation of drifting off into cheese, stays cool at any given moment and keeps the seal of quality for his music very high. 'Blaupause' is a wonderful summery teaser that never explodes, but keeps imploding! H.O.S.H. once again does what he does best: delivering two wonderfully melodic tracks that fluctuate perfectly between house and techno. Just the way we like it.
FLORIAN MEINDL- BLAST 12” (trapez, germany)
12.98usd/6.64gbp/8.46eur/1351jpy (approx)
*Austrian producer Florian Meindl has written a fat techno rocker with "Blast," and the title track sounds like a landing UFO. It's a track with a nervous beat, great ascending dynamic breaks and also passages of crazy sound sculpturing that build up the dynamic to the maximum. "Subfocus" was released as an edit on the Trapez Selection 6 mix CD and is featured here in full length. "Adjust" is an exclusive peek at Florian's new sound design.
MINILOGUE- SPACE REMIXES 12” (traum, germany)
11.98usd/6.13gbp/7.81eur/1246jpy (approx)
*This Traum 12" includes a Radio Slave and Bukaddor & Fishbeck remix of Minilogue's most successful track of 2007, "Space." Radio Slave's remix has a monster beat and an epic dub touch. Bukaddor & Fishbeck's remix is equally stripped-down but with a different sound aesthetic, taking its time with a gentle, slight swing. The drastic break in the middle of the track pulls down the dynamic to the absolute minimum and lets the hands fly up in the air.
