NEW ARRIVALS AND RESTOCKS FRIDAY, AUGUST 8
thanks for looking.
i know what you’re thinkin’, a lot of restocks this week (hey, it IS august after all), but do not miss the choice new arrivals (the u.s. girls lp on siltbreeze being this weeks stand-out… and they’re playing this sunday too!). also in the picks (and this weeks you tube clip) is new and restocked cd’s from guy clark. we’ve been digging guy A LOT lately… no doubt some of you with death fetishes have seen the excellent documentary about townes van zandt entitled ‘be here to love me’ and thus recognize his name. not to take away from townes’ talent (he was one of the great american songwriters), but guy clark stole the film with his stories and gallows humor, and he writes some great songs too (plus, he’s still alive!)… anyhow, check out his cd’s, you’ll be glad you did. along with the u.s. girls lp, there’s tons of siltbreeze restocks as well as the usual booty of new dance 12s (check out the betty botox releases on endless flight. exspensive, but essential). come on by and check ‘em out!!!
gracias

PICKS OF THE WEEK
U.S. GIRLS- INTRODUCING... LP (siltbreeze, usa)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*If the alluring moniker used by Megan Uremovich conjures images of volleyball teams or cheerleading squads, forget it. Not that there's any doubt that Uremovich--sorry, U.S. Girls-- couldn't rise and conquer either challenge. Like fellow DIY ingenues Sally Strobelight and Inca Ore, U.S. Girls' approach is deceptively ethereal and delightfully haunting; lithe, lysergic gamma rays of keyboard murk beamed over percussive bonk sort of resemble Diamanda Galas reinterpreting Suicide's Red Star. And dig that cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Prove It All Night," done in such an effortless, barbital lush you'd swear the air was filled with mescaline. Guess what? It's not.
GUY CLARK- OLD NO.1 CD (dbk works, usa)
19.98usd/10.29gbp/13.01eur/2189jpy (approx)
*shop favorite in stock on cd for the first time… Guy Clark's debut from 1975 is one of the all-time classic country singer-songwriter records. By the time of its release, the Texas native had been shopping his tunes in Nashville for a few years and the songs from Old No.1 were already well-aged and oft covered (most notably, Clark's buddy Jerry Jeff Walker had a minor hit with 'L.A. Freeway' on 1972's Jerry Jeff Walker). Regardless, though Clark considers himself more a songwriter than recording artist, nobody holds a candle to these performances. From the rollicking Texas swing of opener 'Rita Ballou' to the fingerpicked heartbreak of closer 'Let Him Roll,' there is not a stinker to be found. Features help from Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell and a young Steve Earle.
GUY CLARK- TEXAS COOKIN' CD (dbk works, usa)
19.98usd/10.29gbp/13.01eur/2189jpy (approx)
*shop favorite in stock on cd for the first time… Originally released in 1976, Guy Clark's sophomore effort for RCA is another fine set of country tunes that run the gamut of emotions from goofy and playful to brutally heartbreaking, sometimes within the same song. Featuring a ridiculously talented set of players that includes Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Gimble, Chip Young, Jerry Jeff Walker and Rodney Crowell, Texas Cookin' is an Outlaw Country classic. While Willie and Waylon were turning the Outlaw into a marketing campaign, Guy Clark really was doing things differently than the Nash Vegas crowd, preferring whiskey and a picking session at his Nashville home to the endless drugs and groupies of the road.
GUY CLARK- THE SOUTH COAST OF TEXAS CD (dbk works, usa)
19.98usd/10.29gbp/13.01eur/2189jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… First time on CD for Guy Clark's fourth album. Produced by Rodney Crowell and originally released on Warner Bros. in 1981, this album features Crowell's compadres from Emmylou Harris' Hot Band and other denizens of the So. Cal new country scene including Vince Gill, Rosanne Cash, and Ricky Skaggs. Includes classics such as 'She's Crazy For Leavin'' (a 1988 hit for Crowell), 'Heartbroke' (a giant 1982 hit for Skaggs), and 'New Cut Road,' plus a sizzling remake of Clark's 'Rita Ballou.'
GUY CLARK- BETTER DAYS CD (dbk works, usa)
19.98usd/10.29gbp/13.01eur/2189jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… First time on CD for Guy Clark's fifth album, originally released in 1983 on Warner Bros. Produced by Rodney Crowell, fresh from success with hits by Rosanne Cash, it features Clark's first hit single 'Homegrown Tomatoes.' But beyond the hit, Clark establishes himself as a polished songwriter and storyteller as evidenced by the haunting story of his father 'The Randall Knife.' Recorded in Nashville but includes many of the L.A. new country session players that are featured on Clark's previous album. Joining Vince Gill, Emory Gordy, and Hand DeVito are Bob Wills, fiddler Johnny Gimble and Nashville guitar ace Reggie Young.
HARD ROCK AND PSYCHEDELIC
SERGIUS GOLOWIN- LORD KRISHNA VON GOLOKA LP (wah wah, spain)
27.98usd/14.40gbp/18.21eur/3066jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser's first attempt to cast a 'kosmische' super-group using the rooster of his Ohr and Kosmische Kuriere labels as the backing band for Swiss painter (he did the original cover for the Ash Ra Tempel/Timothy Leary Seven-Up album) and gypsy mystic Sergius Golowin, this record can be considered actually as the starter of the Cosmic Jokers saga as it got together for the first time. Wallenstein, Witthüsser & Westrupp, Klaus Schulze and the enigmatic Jörg Mierke form into some sort of cosmic all-star band. An enchanting album where musicians back Golowin's spoken-word ramblings with an inspired flow of sound which keeps on rising and falling, sometimes folky, sometimes electronic, always delicate and mystic. A true work of genius.
LOS SIREX- LOS SIREX GRITAN! LP (spanish inquisition, spain)
31.98usd/16.46gbp/20.82eur/3505jpy (approx)
*One of the most prolific bands from the Spanish '60s, you can find a good number of great tracks in their complete discography. Here for the first time ever is a vinyl collection of their best tracks, with some real cool garage and beat numbers including some well-known hits like the mighty garage anthem 'Yo Grito', 'Faldas Cortas, Piernas Largas', 'El Tren De La Costa' or 'Reprise.' Great artwork for this great and limited release of 500 copies only, with fantastic remastered sound.
SOFT ROCK AND LIGHT PSYCHEDELIC HARMONY
DINO VALENTE- DINO VALENTE CD (rpm, uk)
18.98usd/9.77gbp/12.35eur/2080jpy (approx)
*shop favorite in stock on cd for the first time… A fascinating enigma of the San Francisco psychedelic scene, Valente is most famed as the author of the song 'Get Together.' This definitive '60s love-and-peace anthem was recorded on the Jefferson Airplane's first album, and taken into the Top Ten by the Youngbloods. Valente was an original member of Quicksilver Messenger Service, and his one off solo single in 1964, a folk pop song called 'Birdses' became the inspiration for Gene Clark to name his new band the Birdses, amended of course, to the Byrds, because of his admiration for Valente's single 'In 1968,' following a spell in jail for drug possession, he got a deal with Epic Records, recording an album produced by Bob Johnston (most famous for overseeing much of Bob Dylan's classic '60s output). It was idiosyncratic even within the psychedelic community. Valente sang elliptical, stream-of-consciousness hippyisms without much in the way of narrative, beginning, or end, but with an evocative lyricism. The accompaniment is mostly stripped down guitar playing pleasingly haunting minor folk-jazz acoustic chords, swelled by wads of studio reverb. In March this year, Mojo's 67 Lost Albums You Must Own article included this album: 'On leaving Quicksilver Messenger Service after changing his name to avoid the taxman, the chemically deranged but incredibly charming Dino Valente knocked off this beautifully elongated acoustic ramble, then promptly disappeared. Emotional, aching and gloriously daft in places, its stream of lo-fi consciousness spawned generations of bedroom strumming by moody suicidal peaceniks. All a bit intense on the surface, it's wonderfully engaging even today. (DH)' RPM make this album available once with this timely re-press and in a package with an insightful essay by Nina Antonia. In the current climate of Devendra Banhart, James Yorkeston et al, Valente sounds neither out of place nor out of time.
PAPER BUBBLE- SCENERY CD (rpm, uk)
18.98usd/9.77gbp/12.35eur/2080jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… A great lost Hollies/Kaleidoscope/World of Oz-style orchestrated pop-sike LP. Orchestrated by Phil Denys (Bee Gees, Eclection), engineered by Tom Allom, and played on by Dave Cousins/Tony Hooper/Richard Hudson/John Ford/Rick Wakeman (then soon to be The Strawbs key line up). A 1969 Deram LP produced by Dave Cousins and Tony Hooper, here receiving its first legitimate reissue in 2008 on RPM. All songs were written by Terry Brake and Brian Crane of The Paper Bubble and the pair provided the atmospheric harmony vocals that underpin the record.
THE WALKER BROTHERS- IMAGES CD (rpm, uk)
18.98usd/9.77gbp/12.35eur/2080jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… The highly impressive Images represents the final flourish of the Walker Brothers' '60s glory days. Released just before break-up in 1967, the LP created a huge impression, initially by charting at no. 6, and over time as a bearer of some excellent Scott Walker and John Maus original compositions. This package adds the two singles recorded in the same period but not released on any LP. With a new essay by David Wells, the original LP cover restored, and rare photos from the Strange Things Archive, this is an essential package for any '60s music fan.
PUNK AND POST-PUNK
ALASEHIR- PHILOSOPHY OF LIVING FIRE LP (siltbreeze, usa)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*restocked… Alasehir is the trio of Michael Gibbons, John Gibbons, and Jason Kourkounis, otherwise known as three-fifths of Bardo Pond. Their third release, following a CD apiece for the Important and aRCHIVE labels, Philosophy of Living Fire continues their sonic exploration of dense, languorous, free expansion. Billowing and exploding like a cluster of hashish stars, the three instrumental tracks produce a cosmic energy akin to a quasar in the heavens far left of Coltrane's OM and just right of the galaxy known as Dead C's Harsh '70s Reality. Released in a one-time edition of 1000 LPs, this is the rocket ride into the outer stratum at which their previous CDs only hinted. So climb aboard and let Alasehir's Philosophy Of Living Fire be your 2007: A Space Odyssey.
DER TPK- HARMFUL EMOTIONS LP (siltbreeze, usa)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*restocked… Der TPK is the charming acronym for Der Teenage Panzer Korps, and anyone who can't appreciate the imagery of a pipsqueak quartet of fuzzy, distorted youth, drenched in DIY testosterone, rumbling out from sewers and into the street, just hasn't been vibing on the correct History Channel. Based outta parts unknown (Germany? California? Is there a difference?), Der TPK gnash and gnarl through the charred landscape of the underground like a small battalion of Tiger tanks blasting across the steppes of the Ukraine. Their sonic attack at times recalls the anxious throb of Mars in their prime, but suddenly it shifts and you could swear you were locked in battle with -- uh, listening to, that is -- the early discordant rumble of Savage Republic. These four youths -- Bunker Wolf, Catholic Pat, Boy True and Edmund Xavier -- understand they are channeling a vortex of sound, circa '79-'81. That's where they wanna be. The walls shake, the floor crawls. Hey, whatta place! And really, how could comparisons to Mars and Savage Republic ever be a bad thing? Has Siltbreeze ever lied to you? Harmful Emotions is the first LP by Der TPK, following a limited edition seven-inch on the Skulltones label as well as some mega-rare CDRs released via Jewelled Antler Collective on the Pink Skulls label. This is a one-time vinyl-only release, with paste-on covers, in an edition of 500 copies. Just like your Grandpa's Siltbreeze! Get it while it's hot.
EAT SKULL- SICK TO DEATH LP (siltbreeze, usa)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*restocked… Leave it to the English to embellish a term like "shit-gaze" and in doing so codify the current DIY threadbare scrape of Times New Viking, Psychedelic Horseshit, and Tyvek. No surprise that the greatest shit-gazer of all time was none other than Samuel Coleridge, an avowed Brit who, plied full of laudanum, would sit for hours and stare at his bowel movements, writing copious notes on their color, texture, etc. "Monday? Oh, stool journal, to where didst thine weekend go?" At any rate, it's hard to gauge how much mileage the Limeys can get with such a phrase, but cross your fingers it hangs around long enough for Eat Skull to share in the odorous mirth. Call their genre whatever you want; Eat Skull will be ensconced in the stately pleasure-dome at Xanadu, waiting for the checks to clear. Biscuit crumbs and tea stains be damned, Eat Skull are a quartet hailing from Portland, Oregon, co-masterminded by Rob Enbom (former bushwacker in the ranks of Hospitals and Hole Class) and another original Hospital, Rod Meyer (the greatest living genius of punk). Previous Eat Skull efforts include a cassette-only EP and a pair of 7-inches, all of which might be out of print. Like their brethren and forebears, Eat Skull runs a post pattern deep beyond pop and punk. They bring to the game an extrasensory appreciation of New Zealand's South Island Sound (Great Unwashed, Axemen), Cleveland art-damage skronk (Modern Art Studio, X-X), and the wretched excess of forgotten Midwest hardcore (Stiff Legged Sheep, Chemotherapy). In other words, just what you need!
EX-COCAINE- ESTA GUERRA LP (siltbreeze, usa)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*restocked… Forged in the Garden City (that's Missoula, Montana to you, piker), Ex-Cocaine is the formidable, sneer-wielding duo of Bryan Ramirez (guitars, effects, vocals) and Mike C (percussion, hexes, spells). Their debut LP from 2005, Keep America Mellow (on Ramirez's Killertree label) brought to light heavy august vibes steeped in the tippled, woodbine 'n' cider electro-folk of Michael Chapman, Steve Peregrine Took, Roy Harper, and other more reclusive Anglo biscuit-snuffers whose works haunt the archives of Kissing Spell and Shadoks. On their second effort, Ex-Cocaine throw down hard, evoking a gnarled bonfire with flames that roar thunderously like the detuned, rockist clang of Dead C's Harsh '70s Reality, and burns evenly like the smelted, Rust Belt psychedelia of Stone Harbour's Emerges. Vinyl-only and limited, the sparks are flying off this one already. Catch it if you can.
FABULOUS DIAMONDS- FABULOUS DIAMONDS LP (siltbreeze, usa)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*restocked… Adorably known to friends and family in Australia as Jarrod and Nisa, The Fabulous Diamonds' beguiling truck is a mesmerizing mix of synth, dub, and percussion, woven around honey-ache vocal stylings recalling (in spirit) past Aussie noisemakers Scattered Order or Makers Of The Dead Travel Fast, as well as those of Augustus Pablo, Young Marble Giants, and Suicide. Their one previous release was a 7-inch co-released by Nervous Jerk and Misteltone, and it garnered praise from the Blogosphere and a smattering of airplay on discerning freeform radio stations around the US. This LP on Siltbreeze has been in the works for the better part of a year; its release coincides their first American tour (along with Siltbreeze labelmates, Psychedelic Horseshit).
NAKED ON THE VAGUE- BLOOD PRESSURE SESSIONS LP (siltbreeze, usa)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*restocked… Lucy Phelan and M.P. Hopkins hail from Sydney, Australia. Behind a basic framework of keyboard, bass, and vocals (and all manner of tinkered-with percussion) Naked on the Vague's distinct aggregate of sound calls to mind everything from SPK to Mars and beyond. Or, as they're fond of calling them in Philly, "the Death Star version of Times New Viking." Originally released in 2007 on CD by the fearless Australian Dual Plover label, The Blood Pressure Sessions ventures into a darker realm than their debut 7-inch (also on Dual Plover) had erroneously suggested. Propelled by the sharp, rhythmic snare drum beat and anchored by thunderous, fuzzed bass-lines and stinging, swinging organ and synth fills, Phelan and Hopkins take turns rounding out the vocal duties, giving the whole of their sound a sonorous curtain of ecstatic foreboding. Betraying a gallows wit, the band refers to their music as "apocalyptic pop," which could be construed as both drowning and waving.
OPER'AZIONE NAFTA- CAVURU LP (siltbreeze, usa)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*restocked… Located within the Trapani Province of Sicily, Oper'azione Nafta considers their self-described "un-rock" as "a blowjob from Luigi Russolo." There's little doubt the great Futurist author of the The Art Of Noises manifesto would be anything but chuffed by such salacious bravado. Indeed, the trio pours on the racket and sounds like they were hatched in a custom-built Russolo intonarumori. Successfully putting the on back in bonkers, Oper'azione Nafta doles out only The Berserk, which might be why, at any given time, their unstoppable onslaught taps into rock/improv fizz a la Sun City Girls, Etron Fou Leloublan or the Butthole Surfers, various FMP blat, and MEV-like electronic scramble. When they claim "We are Oper'azione Nafta and we kill Bambi!" who among us would question it? Besides, a nice bowl of Sicilian-styled venison ragout would really hit the spot.
PINK REASON- CLEANING THE MIRROR CD (siltbreeze, usa)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*restocked… Pink Reason is always Kevin DeBroux and practically never anyone else. The self-released Pink Reason debut seven-inch from 2006 was an itch of such beguiling psychic ache that all the inhabitants of Siltbreeze Island scratched it until they bled. On this first full length, the resident of Green Bay, Wisconsin, continues to ooze muzzy melancholia by the bucket, ably and formidably clearing house in Sanguine Manor, whose previous tenants include Royal Trux, The Jacobites, Phantom Payne, Black Vial, and other marginal inhabitants whose sticky fingers glimmer in stoned adulation. Dominated by creeping synths, stark strums and rickety percussive splats that complement De Broux's heartscraping vocal catharsis, Cleaning The Mirror journeys far beyond any known perspective, practically insinuating an alternate otherworld where Tim Buckley's Lorca and Jandek's Ready For The House have been hybridized into a ripe-for-plucking masterpiece. Or, shunning hyperbole in favor of acronym, Pink Reason's modern day DIY is very FYI that you should check out PDQ.
PSYCHEDELIC HORSESHIT- MAGIC FLOWERS DRONED LP (siltbreeze, usa)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*restocked… Let's spin the history dial back and wonder what if Hitler had inherited six million dollars instead of being responsible for the deaths of six million Jews? Think about it-- no Anne Frank, Joseph Mengle, or Auschwitz; marzipan sales would be way up, cocaine legal, and vegetarians would have had an early advocate and mentor; the German Sheperd would be the national bird; watercoloring might even be a serious medium-- the mind boggles. And as an ardent fan of classical music (not to mention the six mil burnin' a hole in his pocket, Mein Gott!) you can bet Adolph would have been on board with Psychedelic Horseshit. The sounds on Magic Flowers Droned captures the rickety skeletal pop of Step Forward-era Fall, the lo-fi fuzz of Swell Maps, and static noblesse of Slay Tracks-era Pavement. Is that classical enough for ya? For sure, this full-length debut is no Parsifal, but to these guys, sometimes a spear is just a spear and The Holy Grail is a movie made by Monty Python. As for Wagner, four outta five housepainters will tell you theirs is a name you can trust. Now where'd I put that joint? Considered by the Columbus cognoscenti as the "little brother band" (Stooges-style) to Times New Viking (MC5-style), Psychedelic Horseshit first came about as three buds determined to crash a hippie fest and jam retardo. When asked for their name, singer/guitarist Matt Whitehurst replied, "Just call us Psychedelic Horseshit." The band killed, the name stuck, and thus the die was ignominiously cast. Since then, they played with the Urinals, Country Teasers, Dan Melchior, Blues Control, toured with Pink Reason and Times New Viking, ruled a couple showcases at the 2007 SXSW, basically doing what they can to lay the foundation for the release of this debut LP (a previous 7-inch on the Columbus Discount label made many 2006 Best Of lists, too). Distempered, jaded, harmonious, and ramshackle, Psychedelic Horseshit keeps the glass half full; the question is, do you have the courage to drink their wry and wizened brew? Sure you do, it's the tonic of champions!
SAPAT- MORTISE AND TENON LP (siltbreeze, usa)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*restocked… Spawned from the formidable Louisville, KY collective known as Black Velvet Fuckere (Valley Of The Ashes, Phantom Family Halo, Kark, etc.), Sapat resides as the centrifugal force in this Midwestern psychedelic madrigal set in the psychosexual backwaters of the mighty Ohio River. For the entirety of the '00 decade, members have kept busy collaborating with and/or massaging the egos of various and sundry avant-pontiffs such as Robert Fripp, Magik Markers, Dead Child (David Pajo's metal band. That's right, David Pajo!) and Eugene Chadbourne -- when not honing the orgone energy of Sapat. The Fall of '06 saw their debut release, a seven-inch on BVF entitled Tongue-Tied & Staid that had a few astute bloggers comparing the action within to "aggressive blues a la Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band." However, for this self-titled full-length release, Sapat has opted for a different, more organic sonic waft. Acoustically packed to the gills, the octet effortlessly strums and blows breezy vibes, emitting kosmisch melodies and Teutonic ambience that channel-- Julian Cope-like-- past giants such as Limbus 4, Siloah and Lord Krishna Von Goloka (you know, the A-team of Krautrock). Once you launch into the group's spacey and entrancing, yet calming and soothing asteroid belt, you might mistake the Ozarks for the Alps if you're not careful. And who could blame you? You're way up there and the air's thin; hallucinating's a must.
TIMES NEW VIKING- PAISLEY REICH LP (siltbreeze, usa)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*restocked… What a year 2006 was for Times New Viking. Their hot debut album under their belt, the trio set off on a nationwide U.S. tour (including two scorching performances at SxSW), followed by a springtime East Coast jaunt in support of The Country Teasers, not to mention various scraps in the puniverse of new weird America, and drawing blood from the likes of Magik Markers, Lambsbread and Burning Star Core. All of which is fine and good -- love those chops! -- but fans (and label execs) have been gnashing their teeth in anticipation, wondering "where's the next record?" The Paisley Reich ably avoids D.S.A. syndrome (an acronym coined by The Shadow Ring meaning "difficult second album").Having developed even more vim and vigor, TNV's blur of high-concept pop, crud, and crunch is staggering. Scribes who languor within the compnoscenti of glossy print continue to peep about parallels to Guided By Voices and Pavement; those of us paying our own way recall the glorious lo-fi shimmer of nascent Flying Nun via The Clean, Great Unwashed, and Max Block. So if you're travelling up and down the SH1 somewhere between Christchurch and Dunedin and hear the luring strains of harmony and distemper, know that it is not The Kilgour Bros., Robert Scott nor the family Crook. It's the malcontented rumble of Times New Viking wistfully channeling spirits from the grime of Washington Beach to the shine of the Otago Peninsula. And in Reich-speak, that may take a thousand years to achieve, but you don't have to be a Scottish weaver to know that paisley wasn't patterned in a day. Patience is a grace. In the meantime, hold onto the rail and let it rock!
TIMES NEW VIKING- DIG YOURSELF CD (siltbreeze, usa)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*restocked… My first encounter with Times New Viking was in the form of a cassingle. I found it lodged in what appeared to be a shrine to them on a street corner during our annual litter crusade. Inside the cassette's handmade case was scrawled "This am band. Good band!" Next to that was a crude drawing of what appeared to be three people playing instruments. It smelled musty and had a real creepy, cultish vibe to it. I was intrigued. Playing the cassette I was at once taken back at the raw primitivness of the music. The organ wheezed and croaked, the drums snapped with sickness and a guitar hacked through it all like a serrated, gangrenous knife. On top of this was a frantic male/female vocal drama. It sounded like demonic incantaions or really elaborate recipes being delivered in a frantic, almost mantra-like chatter. It was unlike anything I'd heard in a long time. I needed to get to the bottom of the Times New Viking mystery.
Long story short, in the following months I saw TNV perform numerous times and got to know them rather well. And yes, I have found many more shrines (and continue to find them to this day). What you have here is a collection of songs found on the various shrine cassettes. They've all been lovingly fucked with my Mr. Mike Rep, (the man behind the lo-fi genius of Guided By Voices' Propeller and Get Out Of My Stations among other things) and as the old saying goes "the proof is in the pudding." TNV successfully skirt the current homogenization of the rock press pigeonhole. Neither are they new-weird-america, nor are they newnoise- underground. I suspect Times New Viking are at the forefront of a new, yet-to-be defined movement. It's only a matter of time though. And when that time comes I want to be there. My shrine needs a motherfuckin' name!

FAIRMONT- I NEED MEDICINE 12" (border community, uk)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*The dancefloor mantra of "I Need Medicine" highlights Fairmont's vocal side, as featured on several intimate and personal Coloured In Memory album tracks. Canada-born, Germany-based minimal pioneer Pan/Tone (aka Sid Le Rock, Gringo Grinder) turns in a hypnotic slap-bass new wave groove, vocal-free but retaining an emo-techno feel. Ricardo Tobar's remix is a joyful, crunchy guitar stomp for bolder indie-electro dancefloors. Also features "Centre Of Gravity" -- wistful early-morning techno melancholy.
TIEFSCHWARZ/SCHNEIDER & GALLUZI- COCOON MORPHS TOKYO PT.1 12"
(cocoon, germany)

JENNIFER CARDINI & SHONKY- TUESDAY PARANOIA 12" (crosstown rebels, uk)
13.98usd/7.20gbp/9.10eur/1532jpy (approx)
*Tuesday Paranoia pairs two prolific French producers, Jennifer Cardini and Shonky. "Come Down To Earth" is atmospheric, full of underwater sonar bleeps and sparse, dubby melodies. Jamie Jones remixes "Tuesday Paranoia" in a submerged house mix, gaining pace and adding his trademark groove. The EP package also comes complete with an a cappella, a deep, sexy example of Jennifer's appeal. This EP unravels the threads of these fresh artists and cements them as leaders in the underground electronic community.
BRETT JOHNSON- THE POP UP 12" (cynosure, canada)
13.98usd/7.20gbp/9.10eur/1532jpy (approx)
*Brett Johnson is a household name in house music synonymous with super groovy, hip flexin' productions. We got in touch with Brett and begged for a little more of the funk and he came back to us with The Pop Up. Things kick off with a full-blown Chicago-style jack attack on the A-side with 'Sling Blade.' A rolling house groove, walking bass line and a low rez digital hook are the main ingredients here with some flashback induced effects sending things over the edge. Speaking of flashbacks, on the second cut 'The Way We Were' takes things back 20 years paying homage to the deep sound of the mid-'80s. Pimpin' ain't easy. Saving the best for last, Brett serves up his signature house sound with 'Space.' A bouncing melodic hook keeps popping up alongside some old school funk-packed bass, fused together with an underlie of groovy swung percussion. Things bubble and bounce up to beautiful melody that hit a mark that many house productions today fail to touch. And if all the melody was too much for you, well you've got the stripped-down 'Basstrumental' dub version to satisfy your mix. These cuts from Brett prove that certain classic elements of house will never die and never get tired. But he also proves that those elements can continue to be explored and redefined.
CHOPSTICK & JOHNJON- BIRDS: AFRILOUNGE REMIX 12" (dirt crew, germany)
13.98usd/7.20gbp/9.10eur/1532jpy (approx)
*Dirt Crew welcomes two new hot producers to their label, known for their own imprints Criminal and Baalsaal and collaborations as Eyerer & Chopstick. "Birds" is an absolute smash tech-house bomb that proves its power in the club. The Afrilounge guys deliver two great remixes (one funk, one dub) that take the track towards a more stripped-down, percussive direction.
BETTY BOTOX- MMM, BETTY! VOL.2 12" (endless flight, japan)
18.98usd/9.77gbp/12.35eur/2080jpy (approx)
*Betty Botox is the re-edit project of JD Twitch. This is volume 2 of three planned conceptual volumes. This volume features Italian EBM/industrial act Pankow, former Yello member Carlos Person, and avant-garde industrialists, Severed Heads.
BETTY BOTOX- MMM, BETTY! VOL.3 12" (endless flight, japan)
18.98usd/9.77gbp/12.35eur/2080jpy (approx)
*Betty Botox is the re-edit project of JD Twitch. This is volume 3 of three planned conceptual volumes. This volume features space-rock pioneers Hawkwind, a rework of Zed by Naum Gabo, and Japan's drum/bass explosion, Flying Rhythms.
MASON- THE RIDGE 12" (great stuff, germany)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*For us it's the track that Daft Punk never did. The track that can change your life. That will determine your memory to summer 2008 even in 20 years just like Stardust, Alan Braxe, Cassius, etc. So welcome back Mason, the Dutch DJ/producer who took the time he needed to make it right and 2008 his year again. With a track that can't be bigger, that is Disco Tech at its very best. Enjoy this future classic including great remixes by Kling Klong artists Oliver Klein & Peter Jürgens and Craft Music boss Tomcraft.
ALTER EGO- GARY REMIXES 10" (klang elektronik, germany)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*Alter Ego's "Gary" is a massive tune with a menacing drone-bass and some winking wavepunk. Remixer Tiga takes "Gary" back to the early '90s, slows it down to 120 bpm, and adds a sweet and moody atmosphere of smooth Italo-disco. "Gary" goes POP for the B-side with Product 01's catchy electro-pop mash-up. Vocalist Rochelle Vincente Von K asks "Gary" to visit her private "Boys Club" where both tracks were put together into one new wave/new rave hit.
SCHAEBEN & VOSS FEAT. SCHAD PRIVAT- MENTAL BLANK 12" (kompakt, germany)
11.98usd/6.17gbp/7.80eur/1313jpy (approx)
*Hooligan techno is back. It's been some time since the last Schaeben & Voss 12" on Kompakt, but, bad weeds grow tall and with the addition of their singer Schad Privat, they bring it back. Still faithful to their unique, rough "band-techno," this drum & bass feels virtually unplugged -- enough that you might forget that there's a connection between techno music and the technology used. Add Schad's sexy and provoking vocals, and you've got great stuff.
MATIAS AGUAYO- MINIMAL 12" (kompakt, germany)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*This is the 12" version of Minimal. DJ Koze delivers a remix that recalls the early days of International Pony. Also includes a mix by Markus Rossknecht (aka Roccness).
V/A- KOMPAKT TOTAL 9 3LP (kompakt, germany)
24.98usd/12.86gbp/16.26eur/2737jpy (approx)
*Triple LP version. Summer is here again, and that means another shining Total compilation from Kompakt. This is the ninth Total, and it marks 15 years of enduring music from Cologne's hardest-working label. 15 years ago, Kompakt came together as a partnership between techno musicians Michael Mayer, Wolfgang Voigt (aka Gas, Mike Ink, M:I:5), Jürgen Paape, and Reinhard Voigt initially as a record shop that today boasts pretty much every service a musician could ever dream of. From their in-house record labels (Kompakt, K2, Kom Ex/Speicher and Kompakt Pop), record shop (digital and physical), distribution hub for over 50 exclusive worldwide labels, recording studios, booking/management agency and so much more, Kompakt strives to keep to its DIY roots by putting music first -- something that is most certainly reflected on this double platter of joyfulness called Total 9. Total 9 looks back at the best musical moments of the past year and looks forward to the future, with some exclusive music you will only find here from the likes of the dynamic duo Supermayer, Jörg Burger aka The Modernist, Freiland (the post-Studio Eins series by Wolfgang Voigt), Kompakt fav Thomas Fehlmann, the always-classic Jürgen Paape, Hamburg's revolutionary and hotly-tipped DJ Koze, electronic disco-master Justus Köhncke, and more. This year, as well as the past 15 years has seen Kompakt just grow and grow and grow. Total 9 invites you to dive into it all and enjoy one of the most diverse Totals your ears have ever heard.
BRENDON MOELLER- ELECTRICITY 12" (leena, germany)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*Leena Music is going on with a series of exquisite artists. After successful releases from Catz ´N Dogz, Holger Zilske, Rodriguez Jr. and Dan Curtin, we proudly present a mind blowing EP from Brendon Moeller. This man is well known from his releases on Third Ear Recordings and Echocord and has been in the business for more than ten years. Listen to his new EP and you can hear it. Perfect tunes and perfect moods for a hot summer.
KOSS- EARTH 12" (mule electronic, germany)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*Earth is cut from Koss' album Four Worlds Converge As One. The original version of "Earth" is beautiful, quiet ambient, reminiscent of Vangelis and Jon Hassell. "Negai" is taken from Innervision's ambient compilation, Muting The Noise. If you like the music of Harold Budd or Ryuichi Sakamoto, you will like this song. On the flip, Âme contributes a massive dancefloor remix.
GLOWING GLISSES- BASSQUEEN 12" (mule electronic, germany)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*Glowing Glisses is Guido Schneider and Florian Schirmacher. The original version of "Bassqueen" is already included on Mule Electronic's second compilation, My Favorite Things. Tony Lionni's remix is electric house style and Innervision-like, while Lazy Fat People member, Ripperton presents a remix that is more modern and more deep.
KUNIYUKI- REMIXED VOL.1 12" (mule musiq, germany)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*Two superb Theo Parrish remixes! In 2005, Kuniyuki released Sunshine/Moonlight under the name of Kuni from Mule Musiq, then Earth Beats under the name of Kuniyuki. This track was also endorsed from many DJs such as Joe Claussell, Francois K, Luciano, and Laurent Garnier. The first album We Are Together of Kuniyuki Takahashi that mixes the new track based on these current tracks is released from Mule Musiq in Japan, and it was received with overwhelming support from each music media and DJs in every country in the world. In the same year, Umri under the name of Kuniyuki remixed by Slam Mode was on Translate, Joe Claussell's mix CD. Under another name of Kuniyuki Takahashi, Koss creates experimental tracks with his laptop. 2 EPs and Ring with unreleased tracks were released in June from Mule Electronic. In this release, Koss also built up a firm position worldwide.
MIKE FUZZ- CHECK YOUR HEAD 12" (musick, germany)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*Mike Fuzz presents Check Your Head: rave culture from the future that combines German technique and the soulful touch of Detroit. "Check This Out" is a heart attack-inducing rave signal -- a true piece of freak music. "Terminate The Terminator" is dark no-future rave reminiscent of Cristian Vogel or Dave Tarrida. "It's Kicking" appears in a DJ Flush edit with irresistible patterns and a vocal by Suzy Love that leads into a great peak-beat.
PROSUMER & MURAT TEPELI- SERENITY: SOUNDSTREAM REMIX 12" (ostgut, germany)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*This 12" by Prosumer & Murat Tepeli includes Soundstream and his remix of "Serenity." His deep and hypnotic treatment captures the sound and atmosphere of the duo's album and leaves enough room for melancholy, playfulness and bass-y grooves. This EP also includes the original track, previously only available on CD. As a bonus, there is the vocal mix of the album track "Believe." Measured chords, a driving bass line and ecstatic melodic sequences make for an emotional journey.
WOLFGANG VOIGT- FREILAND KLAVIERMUSIK 12" (profan, germany)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*Freiland Klaviermusik is radical, puristic, uncompromising, elegiac, difficult, defiant, true and absolutely necessary. The record, including art cover designed by Wolfgang Voigt is strictly limited.
RADIO SLAVE- GRINDHOUSE REMIXES 12" (rekids, uk)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*One of the biggest tracks from Radio Slave's killer No Sleep project gets some heavyweight remixes from Dubfire, Danton Eeprom and Terence Fixmer. Radio Slave is the producer's producer and choice remixer, voted number 11 in the "50 Greatest Remixers of All Time" in DJ magazine. Dubfire's remix has been gaining momentum since its first outing in Miami. Playlisted and charted by a whole range of top DJs across the board.
2AM/FM- ELECTRONIC JUSTICE 12" (spectral sounds, usa)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*James T. Cotton and D_Marc Cantu saw off another thick slab of classic Chicago acid. "1MG" is a relentless Teutonic grind, tightly constructed yet engraved with subversive tweaks. "Werkin House" and "Static Vision" follow with the brooding squelch of a 303. And if these take us deep inside the darkest warehouse, then the title-track reveals the inner depths of the artists themselves. "Electronic Justice" is a rolling vocal creeper whose laser-beam pulses ebb and flow around a synthesized mantra.
JAMES T. COTTON- LIKE NO ONE 2LP (spectral sounds, usa)
19.98usd/10.29gbp/13.01eur/2189jpy (approx)
*restocked… LP-only release. This is the second full-length release for Michigan's James T. Cotton (aka Tadd Mullinix, also known as Dabrye, JTC and SK-1) on the Spectral Sound label. James T. Cotton has been an integral part of the Spectral family since its origins, and after a string of successful releases on the Creme, Nation and UDEK labels, he returns with a confident new album that takes his dark techno paranoia into new realms. 2004's The Dancing Box LP was a powerful look into the mind of this creative producer -- tracks like "Press Your Body" and "The Drain" suggested a dystopian landscape, marrying Belgian new beat and acid into a classic melange. As part of a new wave of producers exploring the jackbeat sound, Cotton provides a re-understanding of classic house and techno rhythms, which steers clear of retro cheekiness. For Like No One, Cotton has paired up with scene luminary Traxx (as Saturn V), for the bouncing "Come Into My Life" and with his 2AM/FM counterpart, D'Marc Cantu, for the ecstatic "Sensational Rhythm." Cotton's solo ventures like "The Boxx" and "Got To Let You Know" are proof that Like No One plays like a document of the dance music moment, where genre falls away, and true energy and prowess thrive.
KATE SIMKO- SHE SAID 12" (spectral sounds, usa)
11.98usd/6.17gbp/7.80eur/1313jpy (approx)
*Kate Simko's first release with Spectral Sound is like the soundtrack to a techno-action movie. The shuddering bass line of the title track bounces off walls while slinky percussion keeps the tension in check. The synth swells. The alarm has been rung. Ryan Elliott chills the mood, creating a late-night version that keeps the original's insistence while augmenting its depth. "Soltera" sees our heroine escape, and housier textures prevail. An airy groove produces melody shrapnel, but all emerge victorious.
HEDFORD VACHAL- TOYS 12" (tirk, uk)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*Brad Vachal and Eric Hedford are two bearded colossi of the Portland, Oregon music scene; one a founding father of the dance scene in the Pacific Northwest, the other an original member of the Dandy Warhols. Proceedings open with live drums and bass-driven cosmic funk, all spacey synths and motorik rhythms riding a low-slung groove. "Toys" strips things back with a raw bass, bleep groove and coolly-delivered vocals. Richard Sen's remix sounds like T Connection jamming with Emperor Machine.
PATRICE BAUMEL- FLOW 12" (trapez, germany)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*Patrice Bäumel is a phenomenon on Trapez. "Flow" is a cool mighty Chicago techno house track with a grinding bass line, stuttering vocals and an overall old school touch. "Cavern" works with psycho-acoustic microphone sounds which seem to linger in the background, and short vocal stabs and mighty percussive programming provide the track with a stronger active rhythm. Melodic sequences slowly make their way into the track, never obtrusive. Pure hedonism for the techno crowd.
TG- MR. DRY 12" (trapez, germany)
12.98usd/6.68gbp/8.45eur/1422jpy (approx)
*TG is Tim Green, known from his releases on Dirty Bird. "Mr. Dry" has centrifugal force in its bass lines which makes you go silly on the dancefloor. When the deep voice starts coming in and the lights go out, this man knows the way to be funky. "Glow Worm" is much darker with whispering voices, but gets the rhythm going step-by-step. This track is evidently for the smaller clubs, less in your face -- cool, deep, and sexy.
