NEW ARRIVALS AND RESTOCKS FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 5

thanks for looking.

while, as i write this, the metropolitan area may be a swampy soup of humidity you can always count on the cool breeze of new arrivals here at tequila sunrise to help ease you out of the summer and into the beautiful thing that is fall in philadelphia. as promised, a whole slew of new (and more restocked) soft rock/light psychedelic harmony. one of said restocks, the amazing four king cousins cd on el, is one of my two top picks this week. the other pick being the equally amazing caylpsoul 70 set on strut. both cd’s are perfect soundtracks to any of your Indian summer activities, i guarantee. other highlights this week include power plant lp reissue on international artists; new and restocked growing titles on social registry; much anticipated pontiack lp on thrill jockey; always welcome moondog restocks; a few essential caribbean and brazilian related restocks on soul jazz and as always, a ton of new dance titles, a few standouts include two new edits series’ on golem and vintage, both are unearthing even more amazing italo/euro dance rarities and unknowns (and in one case, a new mystery recording) and the archigram vs. asia argento on refuge. all killer… no filler… and of course… limited. don’t miss out!

PICKS OF THE WEEK

THE FOUR KING COUSINS- INTRODUCING... CD (el, uk)
18.98usd/10.65gbp/13.11eur/2051jpy (approx)

*restocked… At last the re-release of one of the best and rarest albums of the sunshine pop/light psychedelic harmony genre of the late '60s. The Four King Cousins Introducing... is one of the last undiscovered masterpieces of that golden age. Produced, arranged, and conducted by the great David Axelrod under the pseudonym Lex de Azevedo. The already seductive four female voices are charged still further by Axelrod's characteristic sensuality. The Four King Cousins covers of period material such as Bacharach-David's 'This Girl's in Love with You', Brian Wilson's 'God Only Knows' and Roger Nichols' 'Love So Fine' are as good as any contemporary recordings, comparing favorably with giants such as Harper's Bizarre, The Association and The Free Design.

V/A- CALYPSOUL 70: CARIBBEAN SOUL & CALYPSO CROSSOVER 1969-1979 CD (strut, uk)
18.98usd/10.65gbp/13.11eur/2051jpy (approx)

*Strut turns its magnifying glass onto the Carribean for Calypsoul 70, a celebration of the magnificent array of crossover calypso, reggae, Latin, Afro, and soul styles that emerged, often from small studio and label stables, during the '70s. Taking the listener on a non-stop island-hop, the albums digs deep into Trinidad's steel pan and marching band archives with a terrific pan cover of Gwen McCrae's '90% Of Me Is You,' alongside tough social commentary by 'rapso' pioneer, Lancelot Layne. It features a sprinkling of Latin dynamite from Martinique legend Marius Cultier and Cuban salsa heroes Los Van Van and touches on island links with Africa courtesy of Eze Rockcliffe's Yoruba Singers (Guyana) and an Afrobeat-inspired plea for freedom from legendary calypsonian, Duke. To finish, it adds in a strong helping of fascinating soul and disco fusions from short-lived island bands like Magic Circle Express (St. Lucia), The Vibrations (Virgin Gorda) and Ophelia (Dominica). As well as a valuable selection for diggers, the album is designed as an ultra-handy package for DJs with a host of playable tracks and rare cover versions. All in all, the perfect funky tropical summer soundtrack for the beach, club or BBQ.

HARD ROCK AND PSYCHEDELIC

GOLDEN DAWN- POWER PLANT LP (international artists, usa)
14.98usd/8.41gbp/10.34eur/1619jpy (approx)

*Exact repro vinyl edition of this all-time classic TX psych album… One of the most powerful Int'l Artists albums, released in 1968. Some will go so far as to say that this album defines the Texas third-mind psych revolution, even more so than Easter Everywhere. The combinations of Eastern-tinged philosophical lingering, staggering hallucinogenics and pure Texan dirt produced a legitimate monster of its time.

THE LOLLIPOP SHOPPE- JUST COLOUR CD (rev-ola, uk)
18.98usd/10.65gbp/13.11eur/2051jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… One of the must have garage rock classics! Originally known as The Weeds and featuring Fred 'Deep Soul' Cole, The Lollipop Shoppe sound amazingly modern! After The Weeds signed to UNI Records, their new manager, the infamous 'Lord' Tim Hudson, insisted they change their name to The Lollipop Shoppe to fit in with the current trend of bizarrely named bubblegum groups. The band's actual recordings are hardly bubblegum, but instead a mix of crunching garage rock and wild psychedelia. The album and its single, 'You Must Be a Witch,' are period classics and still prized by collectors, though neither made the charts. The band opened for stars such as Janis Joplin and The Doors, and appeared in the biker movie Angels from Hell. They were to regroup as The Weeds once out of 'Lord' Tim's clutches, and Fred Cole was to lead cult band Dead Moon. But it is for this, the classic Just Colour, that The Lollipop Shoppe are justly acclaimed. Wonderfully re-mastered in top Rev-Ola style and with lovely packaging that features plenty of rare photos and memorabilia!

GROWING- ALL THE WAY LP (social registry, usa)
17.98usd/10.09gbp/12.42eur/1943jpy (approx)

*All The Way, the debut full-length from Growing on The Social Registry, concludes an epic trip. Through six tracks Kevin Doria and Joe DeNardo complete the conceptual arc initiated on their 2006 album Color Wheel. If we still bought into genres, we would say that this record finally achieves a perfect balance of noise and pop, yet what we can say is that you'll potentially hum melodies long after your headphones are out. Recorded by Barry London at his Ocropolis Studio during the 2007-2008 winter, All The Way sounds like some sort of frozen urban chaos taking place at a superclub on another planet.

GROWING- LATERAL LP (social registry, usa)
14.98usd/8.41gbp/10.34eur/1619jpy (approx)

*restocked… Lateral finds the band reflecting on their past two (may we add highly underrated) albums while gazing to the future with newfound rhythmic motifs and otherworldly heights to their sound sculptures. The textures are warm and inviting, tempting the listener to focus on stunning minimalist changes within Growing's dense aural fog.

PONTIAK- SUN ON SUN LP (thrill jockey, usa)
14.98usd/8.41gbp/10.34eur/1619jpy (approx)

PONTIAK- SUN ON SUN CD (thrill jockey, usa)
14.98usd/8.41gbp/10.34eur/1619jpy (approx)

*Pontiak is made up of three brothers from the Blue Ridge farm country of Virginia, Van (guitar, lead vocals), Lain (drums, vocals) and Jennings Carney (bass, organ, vocals). Their music is swaggering guitar rock that straddles the line between a power trio and something far more expansive in sound and scope. Their broad song structures allow ample room for three-part vocals, drums, organ and stellar slide and lead guitar to stretch and captivate. Songs roll along with an effortless synchronicity despite their extremely varied textures. Julian Cope described them as 'straddling a wide sonic rift valley, with references that stretch from the southern latitudes of Spain's Viaje A800 to the northern majesty of Black Sabbath and Harvey Milk via The Doors.'

SOFT ROCK AND LIGHT PSYCHEDELIC HARMONY

HAGOOD HARDY & THE MONTAGE- MONTAGE CD (beatball. korea)
25.98usd/14.58gbp/17.94eur/2808jpy (approx)

*Hagood Hardy is best remembered as a composer of TV advertising jingles and his 1975 hit 'The Homecoming' (originally written to advertise tea). Before that, he had a jazz-tinged pop group called Montage and they made this classic album featuring treasures such as a brilliant reworking of Vince Guaraldi's 'Cast Your Fate To The Wind' and Dory Previn & Fred Carlin's bittersweet 'Come Saturday Morning.' First official release; LP miniature sleeve including obi, 24-bit digital remaster from the original master tape; liner notes by Duglas Stewart (BMX Bandits).

THE JIMMY VANN BAND- THE UPPER LEFT HAND CORNER OF THE SKY CD (beatball. korea)
25.98usd/14.58gbp/17.94eur/2808jpy (approx)

*The Jimmy Vann Band made sweet music, a hybrid of soft pop and mellow jazz. The Upper Left Hand Corner of the Sky is a collection of pure hearted music that soothes the soul. The title track has become a classic of the soft-pop genre, composed by Buddy Prima (nephew of the legendary Louis Prima). Remastered with tender loving care, this reissue brings you the original magic and melody of this long lost album. First official release; LP miniature sleeve including obi, 24-bit digital remaster from original master tape. Liner notes by Jimmy Vann, Duglas Stewart (BMX Bandits) and Park Joo-Hyeok (including lyrics).

DENNY DOHERTY- WAITING FOR A SONG CD (el, uk)
18.98usd/10.65gbp/13.11eur/2051jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… This is a welcome re-issue of the extremely scarce early seventies solo album by Denny Doherty, who is one of the original members of the hugely successful Mamas & The Papas, one of the best loved of all sixties groups. Denny Doherty is one of the great vocalists of the sixties, a singer described by Mamas & Papas' Michelle Phillips as 'The Psychedelic Frank Sinatra.' With the demise of the group amid drug-induced acrimony, Denny embarked on a solo career which culminated in the 1974 LP Waiting For A Song. The album featured backing vocals by Cass and Michelle Phillips on what proved to be Cass Elliot's final recording, as she would suffer a fatal heart attack in London in July of that year. This album is very much one for aficionados of Margo Guryan/ Free Design style intelligent vocal pop-flowerpower-sunshine pop.

FIVE MAN ELECTRICAL BAND- HALF PAST MIDNIGHT: THE STACCATOS AND BEYOND CD (now sounds, uk)
18.98usd/10.65gbp/13.11eur/2051jpy (approx)

*Having released two LPs as The Staccatos, Ottawa, Canada s Five Man Electrical Band launched onto the scene in 1968 with this criminally underrated, psychedelically tinged pop gem. Reminiscent of The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield and other like-minded bands, Five Man Electrical Band developed into one of Canada's best-known groups, and their Capitol 45 of Half Past Midnight sold over 25,000 copies -- in Canada alone! Led by Les Emmerson, Five Man Electrical Band is today best known for their 1971 anti-establishment anthem 'Signs.' The Billboard # 3 single went on to sell over a million and a half copies. This first-ever CD issue of their long-out-of-print Capitol LP is supplemented by rare Staccatos 45s, none of which have ever been issued on CD. The 16-page color booklet also includes rare, unpublished photos and comprehensive liner notes that feature the participation of original band members. Remastered from the original master tapes.

TINA MASON- IS SOMETHING WONDERFUL! CD (now sounds, uk)
18.98usd/10.65gbp/13.11eur/2051jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… The wonderful Tina Mason exploded on the L.A. scene in 1966, appearing at Disneyland and later starring as a regular on Dick Clark's Where The Action Is, where she met future husband and Paul Revere & The Raiders bassist Phil Fang Volk. After fronting Tina & The Mustangs, she embarked upon recording 1967's Is Something Wonderful with Electric Prunes producer David Axelrod and the great L.A. arranger H.B. Barnum (Lou Rawls/Supremes/Sinatra). The result was a sumptuous blend of Bacharachian L.A. soft pop and Northern soul/girl group attitude. Northern soul collectors have long coveted Tina's LP and accompanying singles, and specific tracks of interest are 'Finders Keepers' and also Tina's gorgeous version of the legendary Northern side 'What.' These days it is not uncommon for Is Something Wonderful to exchange hands for three figures. This first-ever CD release of Is Something Wonderful features the talents of no less than Wrecking Crew royalty Earl Palmer and Dennis Budimir and is enhanced with 7 bonus tracks, appearing on CD for the first time, ever. The 16-page color booklet also includes rare, unpublished photos and comprehensive liner notes that feature the participation of H.B. Barnum, David Axelrod and Tina herself.

SUSAN CARTER- WONDERFUL DEEDS AND ADVENTURES CD (rev-ola, uk)
18.98usd/10.65gbp/13.11eur/2051jpy (approx)

*Along with the likes of Jackie DeShannon, Cass Elliot and Joni Mitchell, Susan Carter was an integral part of the late 1960s Laurel Canyon scene, a veritable 'Lady Of The Canyon.' Carter captured the attention of Epic Records, who teamed her with producer Les Carter and arranger Dick Halligan (of Blood, Sweat & Tears fame). Recorded in New York, her 1970 debut Wonderful Deeds and Adventures - A Collection of Stirring Scene and Moving Accidents was certainly that and more -- something of an era timepiece. It was also interesting in that, with backing from Randy Brecker and most of BS&T, material such as Donovan's 'Young Girl Blues,' James Taylor s 'Brighten Your Day with My Night' and 'Medley for Billie Holiday' found Carter working in the blues and jazz genres years before Joni Mitchell and other contemporaries made such a move. Carter certainly had a powerful and versatile voice, capable of handling a wide variety of genres and her crystalline voice occasionally recalled Laura Nyro. Wonderful remaster of this outstanding album! A must for all fans of hippie femme vocals: Nancy Priddy, Susan Carter, Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell.

WANDA DE SAH- SOFTLY! CD (rev-ola, uk)
18.98usd/10.65gbp/13.11eur/2051jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Before there was the amazingly successful Brasil '66, there was the experimental pop/bossa nova project Brasil '65, starring Sergio Mendes, and fronted by two amazing young singer/guitarists, Wanda de Sah and Rosinha de Valenca and the acclaim heaped on them for their live performances and albums led Mendes to abandon the byways of jazz for the greener pastures of Brasil '66. In 1966, just as this original pop bossa sensation was disbanding, Sinatra's producer David Cavanaugh signed Wanda to Capitol Records and made this beautiful, relaxing and erotic album. Sympathetically arranged by the seemingly unlikely figure of Munsters theme composer, Jack Marshall (but let us not forget his stunning arrangement of Peggy Lee's 'Fever'), it drew its repertoire from some of the most cutting-edge young Brazilian composers, all wrapped in an amazing soundtrack-like production, with Wanda's voice -- a thing of beauty in itself -- leading it all. Promoted originally as 'The real Girl From Ipanema' (because she was!) Wanda was a sensation. All in all, a wonderful album.

JENNIFER- JENNIFER CD (rev-ola, uk)
18.98usd/10.65gbp/13.11eur/2051jpy (approx)

*In a previous life in 1968 -- when she was an ambitious hippie folkie known simply as Jennifer -- she became a regular on U.S. TV hit The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour where she sang with guests including Donovan, Glen Campbell, Kris Kristofferson, Dion, John Hartford and Mason Williams. The same year she appeared in the Los Angeles production of the musical Hair and launched her solo recording career with the album I Remember Everything which features Jennifer's sun-kissed re-workings of songs by The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Bee Gees and Joni Mitchell, amongst others. Her 1969 follow up See Me, Feel Me, Touch Me, Heal Me features more of her unique soulful take on songs by The Who, Bob Dylan and from Hair. Here we have two collectable orchestral soft pop gems together on one CD; re-mastered in the time-honored Rev-Ola tradition and featuring brand new in-depth liner notes and tons of rare photos and memorabilia! A must for all fans of femme pop, soft pop, hippie folk and great, great singing!

NANCY PRIDDY- YOU'VE COME THIS WAY BEFORE CD (rev-ola, uk)
18.98usd/10.65gbp/13.11eur/2051jpy (approx)

*djs and hipsters worldwide bigging up an album by Christina Applegate's mom?...You're putting me on, right?...well, er...NO!! Radiant New York-based actress/songstress Nancy Priddy only made this one album, but what an album it is! A fine, low-key psych folk pop masterpiece, funky and folky and psychy-rocky and Lord knows what else all at once, with the Big Apple's finest. Nancy had been a mover and shaker on the Greenwich Village folk scene of the early 1960s, as a member of The Bitter End Singers and is the subject of the Stephen Stills-penned Buffalo Springfield classic, 'Pretty Girl Why' (think 'Priddy Girl Why'). The album was produced by industry legend Phil Ramone, then working with enigmatic audio innovator Enoch Light on his Project 3 roster including The Free Design, and obviously at the top of his considerable form...There are elements of folk, pop, soul, gospel, even children's music here, a unique sound and atmosphere which has made this one of those mysterious albums which commands top dollar without being obviously by any kind of 'rock legend'... Over startling arrangements centered around spare basslines, folk changes, experimental touches and DJ-enticing drum breaks, she sings lyrics far beyond the usual pop-romantic platitudes. Today, the album is rabidly sought after by DJs and the hordes of Wyrd Folk fans in that growing field.

EVIE SANDS- ESTATE OF MIND CD (rev-ola, uk)
18.98usd/10.65gbp/13.11eur/2051jpy (approx)

*Evie Sands... one of the most astonishing female vocalists in the world, the favourite singer of Dusty Springfield among many others...yes, we've been through all this before, but...well...it needs to be said! After a series of critically acclaimed disappointments in the 1960s, Evie at last got her due with the sublime (and monster hit!) 1969 single and album 'Any Way That You Want Me' on A&M...a couple of years later, Evie was to team with Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter, erstwhile hitmakers at Dunhill Records...masterminds of the label's dazzling second run, going from re-inventing The Grass Roots as pop/soul hitmakers, to the personal triumph of relaunching the hit career of The Four Tops...On a roll, they were able to launch Haven Records, to which their first signing was Evie...for this superb album, written and produced by the duo, which was a huge success, both artistic and commercial for Evie, and spawned the hit singles 'You Brought The Woman Out Of Me' and 'I Love Makin' Love To You'...along with a raft of cover versions by Barbara Streisand, Gladys Knight, Dusty Springfield, Dobie Gray, Dionne Warwick, Frankie Valli, Cher and Greg Allman, The Manhattans, Phyllis Hyman, Jose Feliciano, Linda Clifford, June Pointer, Weather Girls, Liona Boyd, The Ebonys, Karen Carpenter, Tom Jones, Betty Everett, and many others...a songwriting coup for Dennis and Brian, and for Evie herself... So here we are, with the original album, as well as no less than five unreleased bonus tracks of stunning quality...another triumph for Evie. First time on CD.

THE TOKENS- BOTH SIDES NOW CD (rev-ola, uk)
18.98usd/10.65gbp/13.11eur/2051jpy (approx)

*The title kind of gives the game away here, it being somewhat a game of two halves! A semi concept follows the title of the exquisite baroque cover of the Joni Mitchell tune. The Tokens are pictured on the cover in off-duty mode, casually dressed and with a cigar on the go. Side one consists of more baroque reworkings of modern folk rock standards, covering label mates Melanie and The Lemon Pipers creditably, as well as doing a stripped down beauty of a cover of 'Don't Worry Baby,' which surely influenced The Beach Boys later live revamps of their early repertoire. Side two revisits The Tokens past in the manner of their later Oldies Are Now! project, with their first two hits 'Tonight I Fell In Love' and 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight,' and their soft-pop masterpiece 'I Hear Trumpets Blow' among others, being reinvented in the style of side one. Altogether a most satisfying and poptastic album showcasing old hands at the peak of their powers. A must for all fans of soft pop, New York pop, Baroque pop, and top vocal group masterpieces!

AVANT GARDE AND BEYOND

MOONDOG- MOONDOG AND HIS FRIENDS 10” (honest jon’s, uk)
14.98usd/8.41gbp/10.34eur/1619jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Repressed! 7 track 10" release, originally released by Epic! Originally released in 1953 -- a fantastic collection of recordings from the eccentric genius that was Moondog. This mini-album features Moondog's pioneering techniques in tape overdubbing -- he harmonises with himself on voice, double bass and home-made drums. Touches of his classical music education are underpinned by his signature and irresistible Native American rhythms. Epic, prophetic, naive -- seriously lovable music. 10" vinyl only release. Tracks: "Dragon´s Teeth -- Voices of Spring," "Oasis," "Tree Frog -- Be a Hobo," "Instrumental Round - Double Bass Duo -- Why spend the dark night with you?," "Theme and Variations -- Rim Shots," "Suite No. 1," Suite No. 2"

MOONDOG- PLAYING MOONDOG'S MUSIC 10” (honest jon’s, uk)
14.98usd/8.41gbp/10.34eur/1619jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Repressed! Recorded in 1955, released on his own short lived Moondog label. 4 tracks of manic saxophone and snare drum mayhem. You will not find an original of this anywhere. Blind from the age of 17, classically trained in music, Moondog aka Louis Hardin left the countryside in the late 1940s to busk on the streets of New York, playing percussion instruments of his own creation. He later became the darling of the NY arts & music set. He also recorded for Folkways, Woody Herman's Mars label, then Prestige and CBS. CD of this was previously issued in 2003 by Moondog's Corner.

MOONDOG- THE VIKING OF SIXTH AVENUE 2LP (honest jon’s, uk)
21.98usd/12.34gbp/15.18eur/2376jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Poet, composer, street musician and cosmologist Moondog (Louis Thomas Hardin, 1916-1999) learned rhythm from American Indians and counterpoint from J.S. Bach. Many of his recordings feature instruments he built himself: trimba, yukh, tuji, oo. Sometimes you can hear in the background the streets of New York, where Moondog often slept. In addition, he was blind, due to an accident when he was 15. Sometime in the 1950s, fed up with being mistaken on the street for Christ (his regular busking spot was uptown on Sixth) Moondog put on a Viking costume, with spear and horned helmet; and he dressed like this until the late 1970s (by which time he was working with orchestras in Germany). Moondog's renown was extensive: Igor Stravinsky lobbied a judge on Moondog's behalf. Charlie Parker wanted to play with him, Julie Andrews DID play with him, and he was feted by the likes of Bob Dylan, Marlon Brando, and Steve Reich. Andy Warhol's mother designed one of his covers, and Weegee took photographs of him (included in the booklet). Janis Joplin covered him, Mr. Scruff owes him badly, and Antony and the Johnsons covers his songs. This is the first retrospective of Moondog's music -- 36 tracks from 1949-1995, most of them exceptionally rare, all of them miraculous.

MOONDOG- SNAKETIME SERIES LP (moondog, usa)
12.98usd/7.28gbp/8.96eur/1403jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Grey area repro of the very rare original Moondog label version of one of the earliest Moondog LPs (soon after reissued on Prestige as the self-titled Moondog LP; both versions were released in 1956). Same music as the commonly available Prestige edition, but this has the original half-moon line-art cover that will enhance your mantleplace so much more. Originally recorded in New York City, 1956. From the Prestige liner notes: Sometimes Moondog the enigma defeats an unprejudiced view of his music. But, if we ignore the cloak of seeming inscrutability and concentrate on the music, the experience can be astonishing. Moondog possesses an admirable virtue; he perceives music everywhere in life. The collection of vignettes contained in this album are fully realized attempts to integrate music and sound. Music and life's sounds are inseparable to Moondog. Thus, the complete 'Lullaby' contains the cry of the baby; a string duo appears comfortably at home in a 'Frog Bog' setting; a New York 'Street Scene' includes (American-Indian inspired) drum solos, the wisdom of a Far-Eastern philosopher, and the strident blowing of a police whistle commencing the flow of traffic. A vast amount of the world's music is part of Moondog's working vocabulary. This reservoir of material serves his eclectic approach to composition. Moondog chooses deftly amongst all of music to elicit his surprising couplings. A pair of violins bowing a Bach-influenced counterpoint might be heard over a rhythmic pattern of Cuban drumming. The ability to find unexpectedly complementary areas of music is an essential ingredient in these miniature portraits of life's many parts. The countless hours spent by Moondog on the streets of New York provides a constant stream of material for this great silent observer. Moondog's music is what he has found in the world in which he lives. Through him we can view the world in a more perfect form. --Robert S. Altshuler.

FOLK, BLUES AND ROOTS

ANGELA DESVEAUX- THE MIGHTY SHIP LP (thrill jockey, usa)
14.98usd/8.41gbp/10.34eur/1619jpy (approx)

*While on Wandering Eyes, Desveaux claimed the influence of great women of country music like Gillian Welch and Lucinda Williams, she now points to Chrissy Hynde, Wayne Coyne and Neil Young as sources of inspiration. These bolder rock influences are apparent on The Mighty Ship in her lead vocal choices and her guitar playing, as well as her arrangements. These influences compliment Angela Desveaux's strong sense of melody, her incredible voice and her abilities as a storyteller. The Mighty Ship is the follow-up release to 2006's Wandering Eyes and features Angela's road-tested band The Mighty Ship. Over the past two years, Angela has toured with Bruce Cockburn, Archer Prewitt, Howe Gelb, and Califone.

GRUPO OBA-ILU- SANTERIA 2LP (soul jazz, uk)
24.98usd/14.02gbp/17.25eur/2700jpy (approx)

*restocked… cd is deleted; probably the last copies on vinyl... As the final cornerstone of Soul Jazz's Nu Yorica releases, this release shows the authentic music of Cuba's Santeria -- which lies at the heart of all Afro-Cuban music and influenced the music and ideas of artists such as Eddie Palmieri, Machito, Grupo Folklorico, Milton Cardona and Mongo Santamaria on Nu Yorica 1 & 2. Recorded by Soul Jazz records in Havana, Cuba and featuring the Bata drumming and songs of Santeria. The music is performed by Grupo Oba-Ilu. Made up of members of the Grupo Folklorico of Cuba, the Cuban state's most famous music, folklore and dance group -- plus members of various Santerian temples. An important stage in Cuba's opening up to the West, as Soul Jazz was one of the first non-Cuban companies allowed to record at the state owned ICAIC studios in Havana.

TUMBA FRANCESA- AFRO-CUBAN MUSIC FROM THE ROOTS 2LP (soul jazz, uk)
24.98usd/14.02gbp/17.25eur/2700jpy (approx)

*restocked… Tumba Francesa la Caridad de Oriente is a 140-year old institution in Cuba. The music of Tumba Francesa is a unique combination of African drums and French patois vocals alive in Cuba today. This is the first in a series of albums reflecting Afro-Cuban culture newly recorded by Soul Jazz Records in Cuba. The Tumba Francesa La Caridad de Oriente won Cuba's National Award for Community Culture and, in 2003, the title of UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, the first such award to be bestowed on Cuba. This music was recorded in EGREM studios, the state owned studio in Santiago, eastern Cuba. Tumba Francesa la Caridad de Oriente is situated in the economically poor Los Hoyos district of the city, a vibrant epi-centre of Afro-Cuban culture. In the 19th century there were hundreds of Tumba Francesa throughout Cuba. Now only two remain; Tumba Francesa of Santiago de Oriente and nearby Tumba Francesa de Guantanamo. Originally mutual aid societies for the ex-slaves who fled the neighbouring Haitian Revolution, Tumba Francesas would put on elaborate shows during carnival dressed in ballroom costumes of 18th century France playing purely African music. Tumba Francesa La Caridad de Oriente continue this tradition today. The music of Tumba Francesa la Caridad de Oriente is at once both modern and traditional, both an important aspect of contemporary Cuba and coming with a vast cultural legacy.

V/A- AFRO-CUBA: DRUMS OF CUBA 2LP (soul jazz, uk)
24.98usd/14.02gbp/17.25eur/2700jpy (approx)

*restocked… awesome album of heavyweight Afro-Cuban rhythms recorded in Havana, Cuba by Soul Jazz Records. Comes with extensive sleeve-notes. This album features the many Afro-Cuban rhythms associated with the various religious cults existing in Cuba today. These drums are used to bring spirits and gods (Orishas) into the body of worshippers who are then possessed. The music originally came from Africa and spread into the new world through the movement of slaves; Soul Jazz Records have recorded and released similar projects in Haiti (Voodoo Drums, Spirits of Life) and Brazil and these new recordings from Cuba feature heavyweight complex rhythms played by some of Cuba's finest master drummers, all of whom are initiated in the cults including members of the secret Masonic-type Abakua faith. Featuring an array of instrumentation -- bata Drums, Conga drums, bongo, eribo -- many of which are sacred in themselves and only used for religious ceremonies. The music and dance of the Abakuá (or ñáñigo) secret societies are considered by many the most original not least because the history of the societies themselves, the most complex and impassioned of all the organizations of African origin established in Cuba and linked to key political and social events. V/A- BRAZIL 70: AFTER TROPICALIA, NEW DIRECTIONS IN BRAZILIAN MUSIC IN THE 1970s 2LP (soul jazz, uk)
24.98usd/14.02gbp/17.25eur/2700jpy (approx)

*restocked… Soul Jazz Records follow up to their incredibly successful Tropicalia: A Revolution in Sound mixes Brazilian funk, rock, samba and soul in equal measures. Brazil 70 follows Brazilian music in the 1970s in the aftermath of Tropicalia and as the country's dictatorship entered its most oppressive phase. Musicians and artists from the Tropicalia period of the late-60s such as Gilberto Gil, Rita Lee (Os Mutantes lead-singer) and Gal Costa entered a new phase mixing rock, funk, samba and soul alongside a wealth of like-minded new artists such as Novos Baianos, Raul Seixas, Nelson Angelo and Joyce and more. With the constant threat of imprisonment, artists nevertheless managed to produce radical music that, like Tropicalia before it, managed to deal with questions of identity, sexuality and society in a revolutionary manner. Brazil 70 chronicles this period in Soul Jazz Records customary style with extensive sleeve-notes, exclusive photography and killer tunes! Vinyl comes on super-loud DJ pressing.

V/A- TROPICALIA: A BRAZILIAN REVOLUTION IN SOUND 2LP (soul jazz, uk)
24.98usd/14.02gbp/17.25eur/2700jpy (approx)

*restocked… As championed by David Byrne, Beck, Kurt Cobain, Stereolab and many more -- Tropicalia in the late 1960s revolutionized Brazilian music mixing Psychedelic Rock, avant-garde musique concrete (tape loops, sound experiments), Samba, Funk and Soul into a truly unique combination. This is the first album to bring together all the artists involved in Tropicalia -- Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Tom Ze, Gal Costa and more. Under the backdrop of the most violent and repressive days of the Brazilian military dictatorship, these artists created a new style of music so radical that both Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil were seen as such a threat by the Brazilian dictatorship that they were arrested, imprisoned and finally deported in 1969. Os Mutantes, the sophisticated musical anarchists from Sao Paulo not only became the musical template for Beck, they were also discovered by Kurt Cobain on tour in Brazil who tried (and failed) to get them to support Nirvana. David Byrne has also released a collection of their work in the USA. Tom Ze, a true Brazilian original avant-garde singer was brought into the open in the 1990s when he toured in the USA backed-by post-rockers supreme Tortoise. This is Soul Jazz records latest release and comes complete with the customary extensive sleeve-notes contextualising Tropicalia, exclusive photos, slipcase and the LP comes on super-loud double vinyl.

Her previous release on Soul Jazz Records was as Ladybug (with Kevin Martin, aka The Bug) with Them A Bomb We, about the 7th of July Tube bombings and Things Change (with Heatwave), a song about the politics of life between Jamaica and the UK. Her lyrics, a unique commentary on contemporary London life, place her at the cutting-edge of UK music today. As part of the fast expanding global family of dubstep, Kalbata is 26 year-old Argentinian-born producer/DJ Ariel Tagar who now lives and works between Tel Aviv and London. Kalbata has many releases to his name, including remixes of the likes of London Wiley grime collective Roll Deep, Fat Freddys Drop and US hip-hop artist Spank Rock. V/A- LES EDITS DU GOLEM #2 12” (golem, france)
15.98usd/8.97gbp/11.04eur/1727jpy (approx)

*three new leftfield cosmic disco edits. "Barbarians", a dj friendly edit of cult movie theme. "Chico", a perfect proto piano house tune, first time on 12". "Peter Wolf", an 80's fast driven European synth pop track.

V/A- LES EDITS DU GOLEM #3 12” (golem, france)
15.98usd/8.97gbp/11.04eur/1727jpy (approx)

*Spacerock is supposed to be a new track by a famous French production duo. It sounds pretty vintage late 70's space disco. On the flip two edits of oddball 70's psychedelic library music productions.

V/A- MUNICH DISCO TECH VOLUME 1 12" (great stuff, germany)
12.98usd/7.28gbp/8.96eur/1403jpy (approx)

*This is the first volume of a new series, featuring the sound of Munich, Great Stuff's beautiful hometown in the sunny south of Germany and also native town of Giorgio Moroder's disco sound. Munich Disco Tech presents great tracks from undiscovered talents, upcoming producers or even legendary artists, which are not necessarily from Munich but who reflect the sound of the monthly Great Stuff Night at Munich's hot club Rote Sonne. On Vol. 1 we proudly present the return of a proper legend and innovator: Tonka, who started a new genre with his cut up disco releases on Force Inc. already in 1993 and ruled the world of house music with groundbreaking remixes and his own tracks for a whole generation. After a four year break and a move to Munich he's back better than ever with two stunning tech-house tunes, with 'Orca' already charting at #2 by Carl Cox. John Evans aka Scary Grant from Italy are well known for their releases/remixes on Lo Fi Stereo, Hi Freaks and OM Records and also delivered a freaky rocking piece of house music for this EP in true Munich Disco Tech style. Last but not least, the great District One remix (by Bart Skils & Anton Pieete) of Danish artists Klovn.

H-TRACK- EDIT SERIES PART 2 12" (h-track, uk)
12.98usd/7.28gbp/8.96eur/1403jpy (approx)

*price correction… After the huge success of H-track1, containing one of the edits of the year - Punkin Machine's 'I Need You Tonight' - H-track return with Number 2! These edits are whimsical works produced over the last several years never intended to be widely released. However, due to phenomenal public demand, they are finally to be released! Vol. 2 sees Pure Energy's 'Love Game' put through the mixer, tidying up the original and giving that classic bassline more oomph. On the flipside there's an extended re-edit of Geraldine Hunt's seminal worldwide hit 'Can't Fake The Feeling' and a nod back arcoss the Atlantic with a superb take on Fun Boy Three's 'Our Lips Are Sealed'.

FONTAN- EARLY MORNING 12" (information, uk)
12.98usd/7.28gbp/8.96eur/1403jpy (approx)

*back catalog title in stock for the first time… Fontän are Jesper Jarold and Johan Melin, whose fusion of rock and chamber music represents a similar kind of musical cross-pollination as Studio, who are featured here. Hawkwind and Harmonia united behind pumping drum machines, celestial strings, trippy rock, psych-disco -- like contemporary dance music for adults. Includes a remake by A Mountain Of One. The sprawling musical heritage of Fontän goes all the way back to legendary Swedish prog band Nationalteatern, of which Johan's parents were members.

ROBERT BABICZ- DON'T LOOK BACK 12" (k2, germany)
11.98usd/6.72gbp/8.27eur/1295jpy (approx)

*Robert Babicz is a remarkable person. His discography is approximately as long as the Mississippi between Meeman Shaelby State Park and Memphis City. Where as others start repeating themselves or just lose it completely Robert Babicz continuously manages to excite and surprise us. Cheers to that! With his second coming on K2 after 'Mr Head' he reconnnects to the housier path he started there 2 years ago. In comparison to the musculous, techy works for Systematic Babicz is aiming for a more discoish, warm and groovy approach. Both tracks are perfect springtime tracks, so just tuck this 12" away for a moment. This winter is almost done with!

BERNARD BADIE- TIME REVEALS 12" (mojuba, germany)
13.98usd/7.85gbp/9.65eur/1511jpy (approx)

*restocked… Mojuba is celebrating its 10th release with the resurrection of a real house music classic. We are talking about the legendary record called Time Reveals by Chicago resident and house veteran Bernard Badie. Many of you will remember the title track often mistakenly called 'Can You Feel It' from the infamous X-Mix-5 The Wildstyle by DJ Hell on Studio K7! Since today Bernard Badie was working together with friends like Larry Heard or Dajae and delivers his unique house sound for labels like Night Club Records, Cajual and Circuit Records, La Casa, Distance and recently for Tony Humphries' imprint. Check this original house power!

MATTHIAS TANZMANN- RESTLESS REMIXES NO.1 12" (moon harbor, germany)
13.98usd/7.85gbp/9.65eur/1511jpy (approx)

*Remix artists from newcomers to big names re-do tracks off of Matthis Tanzmann's full-length Restless. Guido Schneider's version of "Crazy Circus" displays his typical atmospheric sound design, without losing its drive towards the dancefloor. Peter Dildo takes the smooth dubbiness of "Swim" and builds up amazing chords and a fantastic groove for a relaxing house remix. Boris Werner from the 100% Pure/Remote Area crew from Amsterdam finishes off with a burner -- definitely a new talent to monitor.

ARCHIGRAM VS. ASIA ARGENTO- SOMEONE 12" (refuge, france)
12.98usd/7.28gbp/8.96eur/1403jpy (approx)

*After Padre (Kitsune), Archigram plays with Asia Argento for a slow rave anthem, spiced up with remixes from Tomboy's Danish Garage, Alexander Robotnick's charming discothèque, and Scratch Massive's venomous bang bang.

ARABIAN PRINCE- INNOVATIVE LIFE: THE ANTHOLOGY 1984-1989 CD (stones throw, usa)
17.98usd/10.09gbp/12.42eur/1943jpy (approx)

*Arabian Prince's story is undeniable. His life reflects the ambition and innovation of the early West Coast hip-hop scene, from his days amongst the likes of electro-rap legends Egyptian Lover and the World Class Weckin Cru to this work with N.W.A. His biography closely parallels the progression of Southern Californian hip-hop. From Arabian's transition as an electro DJ into one of the West Coast's first hip-hop stars... in the shift from electro-rap to the gangsta-rap music that transformed the world. This anthology, a collection of his groundbreaking electro-rap work recorded between 1984 and 1989, not only compels the listener through sound, but through prose. Through Arabian Prince's music and life story, Stones Throw Records is proud to present a glimpse into an overlooked chapter in hip-hop's history. Includes two bonus tracks.

GUY GERBER- DISORIENTATION 12" (supplement facts, isreal)
12.98usd/7.28gbp/8.96eur/1403jpy (approx)

*restocked… The first 2008 release from Guy Gerber's Supplement Facts imprint comes from Gerber himself with 'Disorientation,' including remixes from two of the most hotly-tipped production talents Johnny D and Reboot. 'I made "Disorientation" after a tour in South America in January this year. Some of my friends describe it as a futuristic Ennio Morricone-sounding track, which is pretty amazing. I had the saxophone sample from a friend for a long time and was always playing with it, but all the time it was too "pretty" for me. Until a few friends joined me for a late night session; about 8a.m., I was twisting it through a very cool effect and I got this very weird harmony out of it, and I knew that it was made.' With 'Disorientation,' Gerber's sound has taken a more natural, house-y direction than his previous workings. Just as he describes, 'Disorientation' spends the first half layering: we start with a clean kick drum balanced between a ping-pong ball batting back and forth, synths descend and wash over, a violin strings through the top layer, the bass drops in, the reverb works in between and the saxophone hits for the mid-way drama. Coming down, the tension keeps a steady pace as the layers gradually become less, the bass departs and we are left with only the sounds with which we began.

RESHUFFLE- HEDONISM/PAPARAZZI 12" (supplement facts, isreal)
12.98usd/7.28gbp/8.96eur/1403jpy (approx)

*restocked… New two-tracker from Cocoon artist Guy Gerber's label, Supplement Facts. REshuffle is a pseudonym for Guy Gerber and fellow Israeli institution Niv Hadas. They have previously collaborated on the Shaky Feeling EP, also on Supplement Facts. Supplement Facts is Time Out DJ of the year Guy Gerber's own label, and is already developing a reputation for quality music of a 4/4 persuasion, whether geared more towards house or techno floors respectively. Aimed at DJs who understand that 'minimal' is about making the most of a simple groove, the EP counts the likes of Martin Landsky, Trickski and Ripperton amongst its many fans.

V/A- BIRD LANGUAGE 12" (supplement facts, isreal)
12.98usd/7.28gbp/8.96eur/1403jpy (approx)

*restocked… The second 2008 release on Gerber's Supplement Facts is a three track EP from three different French producers. Essential. David K, the Parisian producer who has released on labels including Freak n'Chic, Cocoon, Harthouse and Tsuba, and whose live show has taken him around the world to Mexico, England, Spain, Italy, Germany, Israel, Romania and more. This is David's second release on Gerber's Supplement Facts imprint. 'Rue Montmartre' evokes romantic head notions and floaty body motions. The midway 'warm' breakdown is one worth waiting for; and that you know will work the floor. Chris Carrier and DJ W!ld officially formed Catwash in 2005. They have previously released on Get Physical, Crack & Speed and their own label Catwash Records. This is their first EP release for Supplement Facts. 'Brasil,' the style no doubt inspired by the country, is a relentless techno/house journey with heat surrounding it. Varoslav, a Parisian of Czech origin is a self taught producer who has released on labels including 32 Bit Records, Tishomingo, Je T'aime records and Stirsound. This is his first release on Supplement Facts ... expect more to come as he gets further involved with the label. 'Soccasoul' invites the darkness in as it begins, gives way to a more forward pushing bizarre house attitude, welcomes back the darkness for the third-way breakdown and then weirds out until the end.

R.E.M./ARPADYS- COMPUTER COMMUNICATION/MONKEY STAR 12” (vintage, france)
15.98usd/8.97gbp/11.04eur/1727jpy (approx)

*part two in the vintage re-issue series (they're not releasing them in order!!! so hopefully part one will appear soon). The first thing you would think about when you hear R.E.M. is Michael Stipe's popular group. Not here! This is actually an (Italian?) group with the same name and a group which only released this single back in 1983 on Xanadu records. 'Monkey Star' is a classic piece of French late 70s space disco.

JOHN CARPENTER/MOON BASE- THE END/WAITING FOR A TRAIN 12” (vintage, france)
15.98usd/8.97gbp/11.04eur/1727jpy (approx)

*part three in the vintage re-issue series, featuring some of the finest & rarest disco & electro tracks from the old days. Tracklisting: John Carpenter - ''The End'' (J Anthony Scratch mix), Moon Base - ''Waiting For A Train'' (original mix).
