PICK OF THE WEEK
JOSEPH SPENCE- BAHAMAN GUITARIST LP (mississippi, usa)
13.98usd/8.73gbp/9.39eur/1253jpy (approx)
*reissue of the arhoolie lp recorded in 1971. Joseph Spence was a highly original guitarist & vocalist from the Bahamas. His music is hard to describe - extreme guitar runs with joyful vocalese rambled along with it. This album includes hits such as "Out on the rolling sea" & "Sloop John B". Silk screened cover glued over a hand manufactured folkways style cover.
FACTUMS- FLOWERS LP (sacred bones, usa)
18.98usd/11.87gbp/12.74eur/1699jpy (approx)
*Flowers is the latest full length from Seattle's bleak and ominous Factums and is their second for the Sacred Bones label. Recorded between 2006 and 2007 but only now seeing a proper release, Flowers is dark and disturbing. The album has twenty two tracks that fluctuate from sound collage to soundtrack-esque moments as well as more structured songwriting. This album also has flashes of abrasive electropunk that has garnered them well-deserved comparisons to Chrome, Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle and much of the early Wax Trax catalog.
MOON DUO- KILLING TIME 12"EP (sacred bones, usa)
16.98usd/10.62gbp/11.40eur/1520jpy (approx)
*Moon Duo is a project of Wooden Shjips guitarist and singer Ripley Johnson. Under the Moon Duo moniker, Johnson and collaborator Sanae Yamada create expansive Krautrock influenced tapestries of warm cascading fuzz and controlled feedback, organ, and accenting keyboard. This four song 12-inch is the second release and incorporates a much more concise, composed and driving sound than before. The Duo expand on ideas only hinted at on the Sick Thirst 12-inch (which is already long gone) adding a driving drum machine beat behind the thick walls of layered sound. Don't sleep on this one.
THE MANTLES- THE MANTLES LP (siltbreeze, usa)
12.98usd/8.12gbp/8.71eur/1162jpy (approx)
*With two acclaimed seven-inches under their belt, The Mantles answer the call for more with a stunning debut LP sure to please all who cross its path. The Mantles have been dead-on in distilling a contemporary pop / psych concoction that mixes equal parts early Chills with early Dream Syndicate--and really, who among us wouldn't want a bottle of that with which to quietly tipple the day away? Recorded by Greg Ashley, the LP taps said hybrid, and if anything, burrows deeper into the core of rock, extracting essential magma that fuses early SF Ballroom psychedelia, Byrds-ian jangle-pop, and the Velvet Underground's extraordinary ability for serpentine leads and bridges. And yep, that pretty much covers all the bases. Look for the band to embark on their first US tour in September, supporting Ty Segall coast to coast.
TROPA MACACA- SENSACAO DO PRINCIPIO LP (siltbreeze, usa)
12.98usd/8.12gbp/8.71eur/1162jpy (approx)
*Sensacao Do Principio is the third release proper from Tropa Macaca and their first with an American label. Their previous efforts on Ruby Red and Qbico were magnificent (though hard to find) efforts of blotted, aural sci-fi codifications somewhere between Anar Band and Blues Control. The two-track full-length continues their foray into post-psychedelic instrumental morphine, where Moolah's LP and Pink Floyd's "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict" function as templates for the greater good. In other words, you gotta hear if for yourself.
ROCK AND PSYCHEDELIC
PONTIAK- SEA VOIDS LP (thrill jockey, usa)
15.98usd/9.99gbp/10.72eur/1430jpy (approx)
*In the summer of 2008, the three brothers in Pontiak issued a split 12” with Arbouretum called Kale as their first release on Thrill Jockey. Shortly thereafter in September we re-issued their second album Sun On Sun (originally sold only on tour) and then their third album Maker quickly followed in April 2009. Having spent the majority of that year on the road, Pontiak were quickly establishing their reputation as an ear-splitting live band with a galvanizing onstage presence. In October 2009, Pontiak will issue their FOURTH release for Thrill Jockey in a little over a year, thus cementing their reputation as a prolific band as well. Pontiak wrote, recorded and mixed Sea Voids in eight evening sessions over the course of three weeks. The brothers sketched out what kind of album they wanted to make while on a two month US tour. It would be visual, it would be expressive, and it would be inspired by what the brothers had seen. When they returned home from tour they had just four weeks to write and record the album before disembarking on a European tour. They spent many long nights, amps blazing into the summer darkness, drums echoing off the surrounding hills, working to finish. They tuned the bass and the guitar down to B, cranked their amps and let the air open up. Hardly any distortion pedals were used. It was just LOUD. Pontiak finished Sea Voids the day they left for Europe. The record benefited greatly from the work of Richard Prince and Chris Burden, and to them the band gives a huge thanks! Sea Voids is limited to 1,000 copies on vinyl only and the jackets are hand screened by Crosshair. Never one’s to rest, the Carney brothers are already hard at work recording their next album and getting ready for another European tour in early 2010 with label mates White Hills. vinyl limited to 1,000 copies worldwide and comes in a custom fabricated jacket silk-screened with metallic gold ink by Crosshair in Chicago. Included is a free MP3 download coupon!
PONTIAK- MAKER LP (thrill jockey, usa)
15.98usd/9.99gbp/10.72eur/1430jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Pontiak's studio in rural Virginia is about 12'x12' and largely responsible for the saturated sound on their new album Maker. The band recorded the album in the same way as their previous efforts, themselves in a studio of their own making. Preferring the energy of a mostly live recording and understanding how to capture their sound, Pontiak recorded with lightning speed, generally keeping the first take as the final take. A lifetime of shared experiences certainly informs the three Carney brothers playing as a band. Jennings' bass or Lain's drums often finish the thoughts of Van's guitar. This is a level of musical communication that most bands are only able to achieve after years of touring and recording. It also may account for their staggering productivity, this being their third Thrill Jockey release, in just over a calendar year.
PONTIAK- SUN ON SUN LP (thrill jockey, usa)
15.98usd/9.99gbp/10.72eur/1430jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Pontiak is made up of three brothers from the Blue Ridge farm country of Virginia, Van (guitar, lead vocals), Lain (drums, vocals) and Jennings Carney (bass, organ, vocals). Their music is swaggering guitar rock that straddles the line between a power trio and something far more expansive in sound and scope. Their broad song structures allow ample room for three-part vocals, drums, organ and stellar slide and lead guitar to stretch and captivate. Songs roll along with an effortless synchronicity despite their extremely varied textures. Julian Cope described them as 'straddling a wide sonic rift valley, with references that stretch from the southern latitudes of Spain's Viaje A800 to the northern majesty of Black Sabbath and Harvey Milk via The Doors.'
ARBOURETUM/PONTIAK- KALE LP (thrill jockey, usa)
14.98usd/9.37gbp/10.05eur/1341jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Kale is a special LP-only split release by Arbouretum and their Baltimore friends Pontiak, Thrill Jockey's new signees making their label debut. The split features new songs from each band as well as a handful of John Cale covers, with Arbouretum offering their rendition of 'Buffalo Ballet,' and Pontiak delivering a potent 'The Endless Plain of Fortune,' and a great new interpretation of 'Mr. Wilson.' The album was recorded at Pontiak's home studio in Warrenton, VA.
PUNK AND POST-PUNK
13TH CHIME- THE SINGLES 1981-1983 LP (sacred bones, usa)
19.98usd/12.48gbp/13.42eur/1791jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Sacred Bones is proud to announce the release of the 13th Chime singles collection. Long sought after by collectors, the UK band only released a scant three singles in their time together before dissolving into obscurity. Their sound—a merging of deathrocks dark driving aggression and post-punks sparse arrangements—reflected the realities of life in a small market town in the desolate political landscape of early 80s Britain. In cooperation with the band members Sacred Bones has collected 13th Chimes three singles plus rare never before heard demo recordings of “Tinker Man,” “Radio Man,” and “13th Victim.” Detailed liner notes by Clive OGrady tell the entire story—from schoolmates in the Suffolk town of Haverhill to tours with The Enid, Theater of Hate, support slots with The Adicts and Dead Kennedys, and an inevitable breakup, making friends and fans out of John Peel and The Groundhogs Tony McPhee along the way. Look out for the “Lost Album” LP and “The Complete Discography” CD later this summer.
BLANK DOGS- DIANA: THE HERALD LP (sacred bones, usa)
18.98usd/11.87gbp/12.74eur/1699jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… For the quickly ascending career of the blank dogs, this 12-inch marks another ringer, and already their fourth release of 2007, clearly showing an impeccable work ethic with no signs of stopping. Each record sounding more unique and far out than the last, this brand new 12-inch EP on Sacred Bones shows the Blank Dogs evolving into a full-on goth-gone wrong killing machine, yet they dont need to get nasty. The effects the vocals reverberate through will cause instant nausea when exposed to the elderly and the weak, yet underneath lie those keenly disguised pop hooks that stick with you long after the record stops. If Death Pop was ever really a term, the Blank Dogs now own it, yet their wrong wave wanderings can entertain fringe psych-heads just the same, hence their growing appeal across genre boundaries.-Victim Of Time.
BLANK DOGS- ON TWO SIDES CD (sacred bones, usa)
15.98usd/9.99gbp/10.72eur/1430jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… blank dogs proposition does also contain a great deal of the otherworldly, I think you shall find the way in which they resonate uncertain and hazy like transmissions coming from the other side most appealing, like reliable messengers delivering a lost love letter across impossible distances with a fierce passion which reminds me of that most excellent Sir John Maus. Blank Dogs seem to have studied in the cadaverous school of German minimalism where thaumaturgs such as Grauzone excelled, but covered some of the piercing angles with the flesh and blood of the new wave that these Islands did bear, particularly Joy Division and even Young Marble Giants at certain moments of trembling melodic beauty. All laced with that distorted barbed wire one finds in so many promising new acts from the other side of the pond. Formidable material, I am sure you will agree, do purchase their album On Two Sides when it is made available and you shant be disappointed. -20 Jazz Funk Greats.
CHILDREN HOSPITAL- ALONE TOGETHER LP (sacred bones, usa)
18.98usd/11.87gbp/12.74eur/1699jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Alone Together is the debut release from Childrens Hospital. If their despondent sounds remind you of something you may have once heard its because this is the latest project from the A-Frames/Intelligence/Rodent Plague/afcgt axis. Reminiscent of the brooding and gray skyline of their hometown of Seattle the duo hover between abstract soundscape compositions, Jandek inspired bouts of melancholy droned out dementia, and stripped apart abrasive punk...often combining several of these forms at once. If recent Rodent Plague releases on Killshaman and Jerkave Tapes are any indication it would be ill-advised to sleep on Childrens Hospital.
CULTURAL DECAY- EIGHT WAYS TO START A DAY: SINGLES AND DEMOS LP
(sacred bones, usa)
19.98usd/12.48gbp/13.42eur/1791jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Cultural Decay existed from 1980-1982. The bands collective discography is comprised of a highly sought after 7" single and two song 12" EP. The latter was produced and features additional accompaniment by future Revolting Cocks co-founder Luc Van Acker. The band played a total of 15 gigs in local clubs—with like minded Belgian acts such as Struggler, De Brassers, and Siglo XX—before disbanding. Eight Ways To Start a Day is the first official release in close to three decades from this fabled Belgian coldwave band. Their sound, a collision of ethereal one-note synth lines and dark post-punk aggression, recalls the controlled ferocity of Crisis and The Southern Deathcult at their best. The recordings on these releases comprise the bands entire recorded output and both the LP and CD include an extensive booklet including photos, liner notes and a comprehensive band history from member Joseph V. In addition to the previously released songs the LP includes three unreleased demos, “Eight Ways to Start a Day,” “Thin Rope,” and “Exit Calls.” The CD boasts those three plus an additional five tracks culled from previously unheard recordings and demos including “Womb,” “Sink or Swim,” “Out of Balance,” “Losing Height,” and a live version of “End of the Corridor.
FACTUMS- THE SISTRUM LP (sacred bones, usa)
18.98usd/11.87gbp/12.74eur/1699jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked, second edition w/o the bonus seven inch… Full-length follow-up to last years LP on the recently resurrected Sitlbreeze label from this band that vaguely circles in the A-Frames/Intelligence/Fruit Bats orbit. Critics have compared Factums to Tronics, Cabaret Voltaire, or Pere Ubus more chaotic moments also citing some heavy Kraut influenced flashes.
THE REBEL- NORTHERN ROCKS BEAR WEIRD VEGETABLE LP (sacred bones, usa)
18.98usd/11.87gbp/12.74eur/1699jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Sacred Bones Records presents Northern Rocks Bear Weird Vegetable—the next full-length from London, Englands The Rebel. The alter ego of Country Teasers Ben Wallers, The Rebel dates back to the tail-end of the 80s—having existed side-by-side throughout the Teasers prolific career—often releasing records at a steadier clip than Wallers main project with songs too madcap to fit into even their William- Burroughs-by-way-of-The-Residents take on country music. Wallers characteristic self-aware irony and surreal gender/race ruminations are still present but sitting backseat in this more fleshed out concept album about decaying conditions on the planet 3ar7h. Although Burroughs comparisons are inevitable, Northern Rocks Bear Weird Vegetable could only have been scripted by The Rebel. The albums narrator is in a band, has a valet named Mulholland, but inhabits an otherwise unrecognizable dystopian landscape where evil science laboratories combat college radio personalities, and nuclear war with Iran is well underway. Important issues of today and tomorrow are touched on. In “Why Must I Pay?” Mr. Thatcher, a future Prime Minister, is excoriated for the rising costs of tea, rent, drugs and sex. In “Scarlett Johansen Conceiving the Design” we are shown a horrific world in which starlets replace scientists as consumerdoms inventors. In “Youre Just Like Tammy Wynette” the Radical Islam Problem is diagnosed by looking at the politics of ladies headgear, while in “Turtle v. Octopus” a battle between Lovecraftian ancient adversaries plays out, potentially affecting the future of Music itself. This is the first Rebel album to be recorded in the studio with a live backing band...that band being Country Teasers. In terms of sound, Northern Rocks Bears Weird Vegetable exchanges The Rebels clautrophobic home studio layers and d.i.y. effects for the improvisational band chemistry and controlled looseness of Country Teasers infamous live act.

KOEN HOLTKAMP- MAKE HASTE/FREE BIRDS LP/BOX (a room forever, usa)
34.98usd/21.88gbp/23.47eur/3131jpy (approx)

Pressed in one-time editions of 300, A Room Forever takes a unique and personal approach to the vinyl record LP. Conceived as a physical manifestation of the Roadside Picnic Radio podcast, the project draws upon the rich history and mythologies of audio recording to produce a final object of art that will resonate uniquely within each listener. MOUNTAINS- MOUNTAINS CD (apestaartje, usa)
14.98usd/9.37gbp/10.05eur/1341jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Mountains is an ongoing collaboration between Apestaartje co-founders Brendon Anderegg and Koen Holtkamp. Having worked in parallel and often overlapping contexts within their respective solo projects (Aero & Anderegg), 'Mountains' was initially created as an outlet for live performance. After numerous performances they decided it was time to document the experience and this their debut album was born. Four lengthy pieces composed around acoustic instrumentation and field recordings gradually blend with subtle electronics and live sampling to create an extremely dynamic and detailed listening experience that ranges from quiet crackling to dense layers of harmonic texture. Psychedelia, Americana and classical minimalism are just a few of the genres referenced in this epic suite of resonant frequencies." 'Infinite sheets of grainy sound build and renew themselves to immensely pleasing effect.' --The Wire.
MOUNTAINS- SEWN CD (apestaartje, usa)
14.98usd/9.37gbp/10.05eur/1341jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Apestaartje co-founders Brendon Anderegg and Koen Holtkamp follow up their critically-acclaimed self-titled debut as Mountains with this second offering of slowly evolving sound. Recorded over several lengthy excursions outside the confines of the city in upstate New York and Connecticut, Sewn invokes a sense of ease and delicate precision. A beautiful combination of clean crisp texture and warm pulsating harmony that shows a group developing and expanding their sound with an extreme attention to detail that reflects new layers in each melody and texture. Eight tracks that combine live instrumentation (guitar, piano, accordion, harmonica etc..), binaural field recordings and resonant electronic processing to create a wide range of electro-acoustic experience. From the folkish acoustic guitar of 'Sewn Two' and 'Bay,' to the densely layered organic din of 'Hundred Acre' and the psychedelic minimalism of 'Sheets', Sewn shows a group as equally invested in melody as it is in experimentation. Music for listening.
MOUNTAINS- ETCHING LP (thrill jockey, usa)
15.98usd/9.99gbp/10.72eur/1430jpy (approx)
*To follow up the release of their highly acclaimed album Choral, Mountains is pleased to present Etching. Before embarking on tour earlier in 2009, Mountains recorded Etching at Brendon's studio in real time with no overdubs. The band then sold the music on that tour as a limited edition CD-R with hand-stamped sleeves. The music on Etching parallels the live sets the band performed on that tour. To translate the recording to the vinyl format the band re-sequenced the recordings to fit more appropriately on the LP.
MOUNTAINS- CHORAL 2LP (thrill jockey, usa)
19.98usd/12.48gbp/13.42eur/1791jpy (approx)
MOUNTAINS- CHORAL CD (thrill jockey, usa)
14.98usd/9.37gbp/10.05eur/1341jpy (approx)
*shop favorite relisted, first pressing with orange cover… Mountains is Brendon Anderegg and Koen Holtkamp, friends since their middle school days. The duo were brought together by mutual artistic and musical interests, and both ended up at the school of the Art Institute of Chicago. It was during this time that they began exchanging musical ideas and compositions which led to them founding the Apestaartje label in 1999. As their collaborations and individual projects blossomed, they decided to create Mountains as a vehicle for live performance. A love of sculpting sound in front of an audience is at the heart of Mountains. The group's third album, Choral, (their first self-titled release and second album Sewn were both on Apestaartje), is the culmination of their work to date and a balanced mix of the first two efforts. Mountains is often compared to artists such as Brian Eno and Fennesz citing their extended melodies and their unique broad guitar work. Mountains seamlessly blend pastoral electronic sounds with both field recordings and a plethora of acoustic instruments. The resulting soundscapes are broad in scope and rich in detail. The effect is incredibly sublime and hypnotic as the sounds slowly wrap themselves around each other and alter themselves in the mind of the listener. Choral is a uniquely soothing and addicting listening experience and an aural crazy quilt: warm and inviting with many details to discover and explore.
OOIOO- ARMONICO HEWA LP (thrill jockey, usa)
18.98usd/11.87gbp/12.74eur/1699jpy (approx)
*Thrill Jockey is pleased to announce the arrival of Armonico Hewa, OOIOO's sixth full-length album and first record in over three years! Armonico Hewa continues the rapturous and frenetic celebration of nature that coursed through the veins of their 2006 album TAIGA. Where as TAIGA meant 'forest' in Russian and 'big river' in Japanese, Armonico Hewa is a combination of words ('armonico' is Spanish and 'hewa' is Swahili) that is defined by the band as 'air in a harmonious state'. Like the cross-cultural title, Armonico Hewa is a mind-melting combination of stylistic reference points that can only be described as some kind of tribal psychedelia that is oddly spiritual and alarmingly urgent. OOIOO leader Yoshimi began her music career in 1986 playing drums in UFO or Die with Eye and later joined him in the revolutionary noise-pop experimentalist Boredoms. While the group has featured different musicians in the past, the same all-female four-piece who created TAIGA is once again the driving force behind Armonico Hewa. Longtime OOIOO guitarist Kayan, bassist Aya and drummer Ai join Yoshimi to create one of the most enthralling, adventurous and unique bands in modern music.
JASON URICK- HUSBANDS LP (thrill jockey, usa)
15.98usd/9.99gbp/10.72eur/1430jpy (approx)
*Husbands is Jason Urick's solo debut. Those well-versed in the Baltimore or experimental electronic music scenes might be familiar with his band WZT Hearts or his solo works as themoonstealingproject. Husbands finds Urick at a crossroads where his ideas are becoming more fully realized, and while still experimental in nature, the songs are envisioned as an honest attempt at 'pop'. There are similarities to his previous projects of course. Those familiar with WZT Hearts will feel that the tracks on Husbands are in-line with the more ambient pieces that the band produced. Ghosted, fragmented melodies, distorted tones and so forth. Compared to themoonstealingproject, Husbands has more depth sound-wise and the songs tend to take the longer route with tracks averaging around the 10 minute mark each. After spending four years in WZT Hearts where all the music was improvised, it was a relaxing and refreshing change of pace to take an idea, let it unfurl, and watch it burn slowly into extended soundscapes. The result is an album that is a complex study in subtlety and one that rewards patience.
FOLK, BLUES AND ROOTS
MICHAEL HURLEY- PARSNIP SNIPS LP (mississippi, usa)
12.98usd/8.11gbp/8.72eur/1163jpy (approx)
*originally released in 1997 in Germany in a press size of 500. These original copies were seized by the government shortly after the records release. Only 150 or so were sold before the seizing, but since copies have leaked out of whatever dank German bureaucratic basement they were relegated to. Still, a very hard record to find for years, now back in print. Our current reissue was remastered from the original tapes & has superior sound quality to the original. Culled from Michaels unreleased output between his 'First songs' Lp from 1964 & 'Armchair Boogie' in 1972. All tracks feature just Michael & guitar. Absolutely beautiful folk music by the singular Snock - in our opinion, one of the greatest singer/songwriters of all time.
DOCK BOGGS- LEGENDARY SINGER AND BANJO PLAYER LP
(smithsonian folkways, usa)
19.98usd/12.48gbp/13.42eur/1791jpy (approx)
*Originally released in 1964, this is the first of three volumes that Boggs recorded for the Folkways label after being rediscovered by Mike Seeger during the folk revival of the early '60s. Incredible, sparse and haunting country blues featuring only Dock's banjo and voice. Absolutely essential Appalachian folk music lovingly reissued in a perfect replica of the original Folkways jacket and including a reproduction of the original information booklet.

KENNY DORHAM- WHISTLE STOP LP (blue note, usa)
13.98usd/8.73gbp/9.39eur/1253jpy (approx)
*exact repro reissue, originally released in 1961… Whistle Stop is a high-quality Hard Bop date that is particularly noteworthy for featuring seven forgotten but superior Kenny Dorham compositions, tunes that today's Hard Boppers should be inspired to revive. Dorham is heard in prime form in a quintet with Hank Mobley, pianist Kenny Drew, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones.
JOE HENDERSON- MODE FOR JOE LP (blue note, usa)
13.98usd/8.73gbp/9.39eur/1253jpy (approx)
*exact repro reissue, originally released in 1966. Tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson's first album with a group larger than a quintet: Lee Morgan (trumpet), Curtis Fuller (trombone), Bobby Hutcherson (vibes), Cedar Walton (piano), Ron Carter (bass) and Joe Chambers (drums). "At a time when far too many Coltrane clones roamed the Earth, Joe Henderson shined as a personal, distinctive stylist with a brawny, instantly recognizable tone. Walton's delicate and gently swinging Mode for Joe brings out the softer, lyrical side of these Blue Note heavyweights. Henderson contributes one of his more subdued solos on record. Though less aggressive than normal, his solo is still harmonically adventurous and surprising. His melodicism is juxtaposed by sudden bursts of frantic clusters of notes. Hutcherson is in top form -- once again proving he is the most expressive of all vibraphonists. A great addition to any collection.
ANDREW HILL- POINT OF DEPARTURE LP (blue note, usa)
13.98usd/8.73gbp/9.39eur/1253jpy (approx)
*exact repro reissue of pianist Andrew Hill's fourth album for Blue Note, originally released in 1964. Hill has been described as "the most deft avant-garde artist in jazz" (PopMatters). Featuring Kenny Dorham (trumpet), Eric Dolphy (alto sax, flute & bass clarinet), Joe Henderson (tenor sax), Richard Davis (bass) and Anthony Williams (drums). "The pieces on Point Of Departure don't flow and develop, and they don't have a lot of built-in contrast; there's no crescendo or denouement in the expected places, and they don't make a journey, traveling from a home key to an away key and back. They tend to be organized into two units of the same number of measures or even, in the case of 'Flight 19,' as one constantly repeating unit. What Hill devised, though, were ingenious ways to work with static harmony. The tunes have intriguingly dark melodies, but on much of the material, when the players find the right scale to work from, they can just let it rip through their solo without having to worry about chord changes." -- Ben Ratliff

ORCHESTRE POLY-RYTHMO- DE COTONOU VOLUME ONE: THE VODOUN EFFECT, FUNK & SATO FROM BENIN'S OBSCURE LABELS 1972-1975 2LP (analog africa, germany)

*shop favorite restocked… Double vinyl version, in deluxe gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeves. Following the highly-acclaimed African Scream Contest: Raw & Psychedelic Afro Sounds from Benin & Togo '70s -- which featured several tracks by Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou, including the ground-breaking "Gbeti Madjro" -- this new Analog Africa collection now focuses entirely on Orchestre Poly-Rythmo. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou is arguably West Africa's best-kept secret. Their output, both in quantity and quality, was astonishing. During several trips to Benin, label-head Samy Ben Redjeb managed to collect roughly 500 songs which Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou had recorded between 1970 and 1983. With so much material to choose from, he decided to split it into Volume 1 and 2. While Volume 2 will be material the band recorded under an exclusive contract with the label Albarika Store, the band also "secretly" recorded with an array of smaller labels based around Cotonou, Benin's largest city, and the capital city of Porto Novo. It is those tracks (all officially licensed) that are presented here on Volume One. The producers of those labels were genuine music enthusiasts, some of them ran these labels as a part-time occupation, with very limited budgets. They couldn't afford high-quality recordings -- all they had to work with was a Nagra (a Swiss made reel-to-reel recorder) and a sound engineer -- courtesy of the national radio station. These sessions were recorded in private homes using just one or two microphones. The cultural and spiritual riches of traditional Beninese music had an immense impact on the sound of Benin's modern music. Benin is the birthplace of Vodun (also Vodoun, or, as it is known in the West, Voodoo), a religion which involves the worship of some 250 sacred divinities. The rituals used to pay tributes to those divinities are always backed by music. The majority of the complex poly-rhythms of the Vodun are still more or less secret and difficult to decipher, even for an accomplished musician. Two Vodun rhythms dominate the music of Orchestre Poly-Rythmo: Sato, an amazing, energetic rhythm performed using an immense vertical drum, and Sakpata, a rhythm dedicated to the divinity who protects people from smallpox. Both rhythms are represented here mixed in with funk, soul, crazy organ sounds and psychedelic guitar riffs.
V/A- AFRICAN SCREAM CONTEST: RAW & PSYCHEDELIC AFRO SOUNDS FROM BENIN & TOGO '70S 2LP (analog africa, germany)

*shop favorite restocked… Double vinyl version, in deluxe gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeves. The mission of Analog Africa is clear: searching in dusty warehouses for forgotten music to keep it alive. All tracks have been officially licensed, usually from the artists who label-head Samy Ben Redjeb also met with for detailed research. He conducted 16 interviews in various cities in Benin and Togo with artists, producers and sound engineers to reconstruct the history of the '70s music scene for the booklet which also includes many rare photographs directly received from the artists. Like most modern music in French-speaking West African countries, the music of Benin and Togo was influenced by a few main musical currents: Cuban, Congolese and local traditional music, as well as Chanson Française. Additionally, the geographical location of Benin and Togo -- sandwiched between Ghana and Nigeria -- exposed Beninese and Togolese musicians to highlife music. The cultural and spiritual riches of traditional Beninese music had an immense impact on the sound of Benin's modern music. Benin is the birth place of Vodun (or, as it is known in the West, Voodoo), and some of the rhythms used during traditional rituals -- sakpata, sato, agbadja, tchenkoumé and many others -- were fused to soul and Latin music as early as the mid-'60s and later to funk. That fusion is the essence of this compilation. In the late '60s and early '70s, rock and soul music started creeping into the region. In particular, the music of James Brown and Johnny Halladay became immensely popular with university students. It was then that the music scene in Benin really started to take off. What made this musical revolution even more interesting is that most of the musicians could not read music. Often the music they made sounded one semi-tone away from being out of tune, but somehow they always managed to bring all the elements together into something new and exciting. One of the greatest bands of their era, Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou, who are featured on this compilation, took the Afro sound to another level by showing their musical versatility in many forms. Although they were consciously copying Western artists, they would always inject a dose of psychedelic Afro grooves that would make their music unmistakably Beninese. Their biggest song, "Gbeti Madjro" is believed to have revolutionized the music industry in Benin in the '70s when the country went through a period of political turmoil. The song is full of raw breaks and hypnotic rhythms, as well as screams à la James Brown. After this song, many bands in Benin started screaming on their recordings, hence the title of this compilation. Latin-influenced sounds are present on this compilation, too. Ouidah, a city on the Atlantic coast of Benin, is home to a large Brazilian community, or, as they are called in Benin, "Agoudas." Members of that community are descendents of slaves who returned from Brazil at the end of the 19th century. Their dances and songs are still being performed and fused into the traditional Beninese rituals. That, too, can be heard in modern Beninese music. The proximity of the giant neighbor Nigeria can be heard on the track "Djanfa Magni" which features the amazing trumpeter/ saxophonist Tidjani Koné fronting the Orchestre Poly-Rythmo. Koné, whose career started in Mali as the founder and band leader of the Rail Band de Bamako, had played with Fela Kuti for a short while, hence the strong Afrobeat influence. There are countless stories to be discovered in the extremely well-researched booklet and the music is truly mind-blowing. So delve into the forgotten raw and psychedelic Afro sounds from '70s Benin and Togo and experience the African Scream Contest.
V/A- LEGENDS OF BENIN 2LP (analog africa, germany)
26.98usd/16.86gbp/18.12eur/2419jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Analog Africa presents Legends Of Benin, a collection of super-rare and highly danceable masterpieces recorded between 1969-1981 by four legendary composers from Benin: Gnonnas Pedro, Antoine Dougbé, El Rego et Ses Commandos and Honoré Avolonto, each with a sound all their own. What you are about to hear is distinctively Benin -- a thick brew of agbadja, soul, cavacha, funk, Afrobeat, and Afro-Latin sounds all mixed in with heavy traditional rhythms. Gnonnas Pedro is the king of modern agbadja: a rhythm hugely popular in Togo, Benin and Ghana, based around three pieces of percussion, each with a different tone. Traditionally a rhythm used during burial ceremonies, Gnonnas adopted and modernized it in the mid-'60s, calling it "Agbadja Modern." The track "Dadje Von O Von Non" was originally recorded in 1966 and is Gnonna's first modern rendition of agbadja. Also featured here is the crazy, kick-ass funk track "Okpo Videa Bassouo" recorded in 1973, as well as the sublimely contagious track, "La Musica en Verité." Honoré Avolonto was one of Benin's most prolific composers, releasing Benin's most successful LP in the late '70s. That album was recorded with Black Santiago, a band fronted by amazing trumpeter Ignace De Souza, another legend, with whom he recorded the Afrobeat track, "Dou Dagbe We." Avolonto has fronted some of Benin's most powerful bands and some of those "partnerships" with Orchestre Poly-Rythmo and Les Commandos are presented here. Beware -- killer Afrobeat meets frenetic funk. El Rego et Ses Commandos were responsible for Benin's first Afro-soul-funk track with the support of Ghanean singer, Eddy Black Power. The "Jerk" scene in Benin was triggered by the success of "Feeling You Got," and its infectious accordion riff. "E Nan Mian Nuku" is an Afro-Latin tune combined with a kind of bossa nova, and "Vimado Wingnan" is Benin's most sought-after funk track. Out of all the artists here, Antoine Dougbé is the least known even in Benin, but he created his own style which he dubbed Afro cavacha -- a fantastic mixture of Congolese rhumba, Latin sounds and traditional vodoun rhythms. All of his vinyl releases, especially the ones released on his own Editions Dougbé Antoine label, are incredible and have become some of Africa's most sought-after collector's items. This compilation includes a 44-page, full-color booklet with ultra-rare pictures and detailed biographies. Enjoy the mind-blowing sounds of Benin.
TINARIWEN- AMAN IMAN: WATER IS LIFE 2LP (indepeniente, uk)
42.98usd/26.88gbp/28.84eur/3847jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Tinariwen's songs, with rutted five-tone scales and wreathed in handclaps, are propelled by icy-hot guitars over sinuous French and Tamashek vocals. The material sometimes contains recollections of other Malian luminaries, such as Amadou and Mariam, Habib Koité, Oumou Sangare, and the late Ali Farka Toure, plus New World descendants like Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, and untold generations of Delta bluesmen. Their lyrics speak of drought and displacement, deceased heroes, and assouf, which, like Brazilian saudade, can mean longing, nostalgia, and love of home, but also a desert-dweller's bone-deep craving for open wilderness and solitude. Aman Iman, their third CD for World Village, was produced by British bluesman and label-mate Justin Adams and recorded at Bogolan studios in Bamako, Mali. The album's fifteen tracks celebrate their heritage in all its trance-inducing, hip-shaking, majesty, mystery, and magic. The third track, 'Matadjem Yinmixan' ('Why All This Hate Between You?'), harbors tantalizing echoes of European troubadour music, which after all evolved from some of the same ancient Muslim sources. On 'Ahimana' ('Oh My Soul'), original founding member Mohammed Ag Itlale interprets a style more usually performed by women, paradoxically with no loss of masculinity. Throughout, rangy, cloaked pickers are flanked by a female chorus whose hand drums are spiked by sharp, off-center clapping, shrill ululation, and fervent responses to the men's singing. Together, they goad one another to heights of fervent experimentation while basking amid hallowed folkways.
FELA RANSOME KUTI & HIS KOOLA LOBITOS- FELA RANSOME KUTI & HIS KOOLA LOBITOS LP (klimt, france)

*shop favorite restocked… In early 1965, just as the West African High-life scene was starting to get repetitive, the revolutionary sound of Fela Kuti & His Koola Lobitos burst upon us. A strikingly original and very talented musician, Fela was trained at the Trinity College of Music in London and despite his primary instrument being the trumpet, he was an excellent pianist, composer, arranger and vocalist. To maintain his reputation as West Africa's leading musician, Fela continuously experimented with varying forms of High-life and other exotic rhythm patterns. This is the very first full length album by Fela, recorded in 1965.
CHIEF BRIGADIER OLU ONI & HIS MARATHON SYSTEM- JUJU MARATHON SYSTEM VOL. 1 LP (klimt, france)
27.98usd/17.50gbp/18.78eur/2504jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… A traditional form of Nigerian popular music, Juju spreads from the ancient Yoruba percussion style and its first recordings can be dated back to the 1920s. Taking its name from the shamanic rituals of the southwestern regions, Juju evolved into a very popular musical genre in the '60s and '70s when artists of the caliber of King Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey (aka Chief Commander) took it to a new apex, blending traditional instruments -- like the talking drum with elements of western music, such as the guitar. Chief Brigadier Olu Oni adds to this extremely popular genre a hint of international elements, and this record has brought Juju beyond West Africa and into the rest of the world.
SIR WARRIOR & HIS ORIGINAL BROTHERS INTERNATIONAL BAND- ONYE OBULA ZOBA ISI ONWEYA LP (klimt, france)
27.98usd/17.50gbp/18.78eur/2504jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… This 1981 album epitomizes the incredible career of a prodigy, who started at age 11 as a member of an Ese ensemble, a traditional Nigerian form of choral music, and has since excelled in many of the varied forms of African music. The most distinctive genre created by Sir Warrior (born Ezebuiro Obinna) is the one known as Nigerian 'high-life' music, a modernization of Ghanian high-life obtained by combining elements of tradition with a modern musical approach. In Warrior's case incredibly gifted guitar playing combined with lyrics deriving from traditional Igbo proverbs made him a pop icon and superstar, with hundreds of hits and dozens of best selling records all over Africa.
MAHMOUD AHMED- ERÈ MÈLA MÈLA LP (l’arome production, france)
18.98usd/11.87gbp/12.74eur/1699jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… The re-release series of original Ethiopian classic vinyl continues -- the finest Ethio jazz by Mahmoud Ahmed and his band from 1975 plus two tracks from 1978. The liner notes: 'Melancholy blues, piercingly minimalist country airs, brassy, danceable urban jazz, heart-wrenching, off-key crooners: a rich and stirring patchwork of sounds, crossing Afro-beat, Latino-swing moves and Eastern arabesques (Anaïs Prosaïc).' Such were the first -- informed and enthusiastic -- opinions of the music press when the first strains of modern Ethiopian music sounded on our shores. This was in 1984-1985. Such a positive note, struck about such a country at such a time, created plenty of reverb. The country had been so thoroughly trashed by the media's feeding-frenzy, which spewed out a mix of horror and pious pity, bitter denunciation and humanitarian appeals, wallet-tickling clichés and refusal of identity. In one brutal swoop, TV-reality transformed Ethiopia into a cursed nation, forsaken by God and by man. In contrast to these tragedies, but in the same hackneyed tones, Mahmoud Ahmed's life resembles an edifying fairy-tale where destiny, talent and achievement combine to triumph over poverty, fate and the evil eye. Biography, history and legend, with the help of God, infallibly weave the lesson of merit rewarded. But who can argue, in spite of the mockery that celebrities invariably draw, when faced with one of the greatest voices in all of Africa? Once upon a time, there was a street urchin in Addis Ababa, who started off as a shoe-shine boy and went on to become one of his country's biggest stars, opening the door to Ethiopian music to Western audiences." --Francis Falceto
MULATU ASTATKE FEAT. FEKADE AMDE MASKAL- ETHIO JAZZ LP
(l’arome production, france)
18.98usd/11.87gbp/12.74eur/1699jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… The Ethio Jazz album by Mulatu Astatqé is a jewel of the modern Ethiopian music and a mythical album, since the beginning of Ethiopian music reissues (mainly on Buda Musique). An incredibly groovy Ethiopian record, originally from 1969-1972. Amazing orchestral 'Ethio-groove' filled with US soul, jazz, sometimes Latin and the deepest Eastern rhythms, even including some great nasty and dirty fuzz guitars. A true gem of Ethiopian modern instrumental music, which illustrates perfectly this symbiosis of strong rhythms and quality arrangements of subtle yet deep Ethiopian melodies. A must for all '60s/'70s collectors! In the Ethiopian musical landscape, Mulatu Astatke is a unique musician, composer, arranger. His real contribution consists in his action for instrumental music, in a country where orchestral traditions doesn't exist. For the last 30 years, he is the leading head of the Ethiopian musical scene. First vinyl reissue and definitely one of the most important Ethiopian music albums.
V/A- ETHIOPIAN MODERN INSTRUMENTALS HITS LP (l’arome production, france)
18.98usd/11.87gbp/12.74eur/1699jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Ethiopians' deep-seated ethiocentrism, the legacy of a thousand years of history, has contributed in no small way to their music's strong national identity, particularly impervious to any African influences. Latin influences, so pervasive in the great musical centers of West Africa and the Congo, have been similarly rebuffed, despite the brilliant attempts of a musician like Mulatu Astatke. He was the first and for a long time the only Ethiopian to have studied music abroad (England and USA). In the late '60s, he brought back 'ethio-jazz', as well as a passion for Latin rhythms that was not readily shared by the Ethiopian audience. As early as 1966, he released a single and two LPs in the US entitled Afro-Latin Soul (and a third LP, Mulatu of Ethiopia in 1972), with his Ethiopian Quintet composed of American and Latin-American musicians (Worthy Records). That was three years before Fela's first American tour and six years prior to Manu Dibango's key breakthrough with the release of Soul Makossa in the Western 'pre-World music' market. All this goes to show how much the history of the African continent's musical modernity should be reconsidered in light of the Ethiopian adventure, even though this lone spark bore little relation, musically or ideologically to the musical revolutions initiated most notably by Ghanian highlife, South African jazz, Congolese rumba or, much later on, by Fela.

It bewitched Ethiopia during the 'Swinging Addis' decade before recently winning the favors of a well-informed audience all over the world. This first vinyl volume of Ethiopian Urban Modern Music presents some of the Ethiopian 'groove jewels' drawn from the essential CD Ethiopiques series directed by Francis Falceto and published by Buda music.

The Ethiopiques series directed by Francis Falcetto and edited by Buda Musique provides a comprehensive landscape of this subtle musical universe where local and western cultures do magnify each other. This new Ethiopian Urban Modern Music release follows the first Soul & Groove installment and keeps revealing some essential parts of the modern Ethiopian puzzle. An unequalled soul funk signature until today.

V/A- MATA LA PENA: A COMPILATION OF INTERNATIONAL MUSIC LP (mississippi, usa)
13.98usd/8.73gbp/9.39eur/1253jpy (approx)
