curious update this week in that it’s mostly cds, crds and dvdrs. true, while digital media seems to be pretty passé (both in hard form and in download form… downloads passé? true, if current iphone/mobile device trends continue -as i’m sure they will-, mp3s and ipods days are as numbered as cds, check out this interview with alan mcgee . granted, mcgee has been trumpeting the death of physical media for well over a decade, he’s still pretty insightful and on-point about the future demise of mp3s and the rise of streaming media). that said, he’s also still dismissive of cds, and i can’t say i disagree with him, except of course when we’re talking about sublime frequencies cd releases and a box full of cdrs and dvdrs from lloyd miller… i came to be aware of dr. lloyd miller via his appearance as a sideman on some excellent jef gilson reissues i stocked in the shop earlier this year (and subsequently via an amazing lloyd miller retrospective lp on the jazzman label entitled ‘lifetime in oriental jazz’), but those releases only scratched the surface of miller’s impressive body of work employing eastern themes/instrumentation intertwined with western hard-bop jazz and swing groupings, starting in the 1950s and continuing up the present day. in stock now are around a dozen different cds, cdrs and dvdrs documenting millers impressive body of work recorded over the last fifty years or so in various locations around the world such as tehran, stockholm, paris and salt lake city. fun and very enjoyable stuff that you should come by and check out! also of note this week are some newish arrivals from the excellent sublime frequencies label (a couple of recent thai pop collections as well as cd reissues of the much fetishized vinyl releases by groups doueh and bombino… indeed both groups releases are worth fetishization -regardless of format-, so don’t get hung up about the compact size this go ‘round); also check out the handful of excellent releases hand delivered by the heavy winged guy’s (as well as related restocks from not not fun and three lobed) and there’s also a bunch of restocked jazz vinyl on the blue note and impulse labels (but not listed below) along with the usual late additions expected later today/tomorrow… as always check the tequila sunrise records facebook page and/or twitter feed for up-to-the-minute new arrivals and restocks.

*cd reissue of lloyd miller’s groundbreaking album from 1968. check out the other excellent lloyd miller cdrs and dvdrs from the eastern arts label in the jazz section below… Dr. Lloyd Miller, who spent 7 years in Eastern countries and 6 years playing jazz in Europe during the 1950s-1970s, has been working with Eastern cultures since1950. During the 1950s and 60s, Miller played with top jazz artists in Europe like Don Ellis (where he was inspired by Miller's Eastern concepts) and Eddie Harris including occasional appearances at the famous Blue Note in Paris where he sat in for Bud Powel to play with Kenny Clark. During his residence in Europe, Miller was prominent in the Stockholm. Frankfurt, Brussels and Paris jazz scenes and played at two major jazz festivals in Belgium. During the 1970s, Miller hosted his own prime-time main network jazz show on NIRTV in Tehran. the first half of the cd (side one of the original lp) features the press keys quartet (lloyd miller- santur, oud, clarinet, dan tranh, piano, cornet and zarb; press keys- piano, valve trombone; don west- bass; dick beeson- drums, zarb) and second half features the lloyd miller trio (lloyd miller- piano, bass, drums or lloyd miller- piano; steve stout- bass; alan russek- drums).

*shop favorite restocked… Numbered edition of 500, glossy heavy sleeve on 180 gram vinyl. Originally released in Zambia, 1973. Another out-of-nowhere African '70s rock discovery in the Blo mold. Completely unknown band from Zambia, privately pressed on a small local label, this five-piece electric band plays a strong electric African underground style. Tons of wah wah-fuzz guitar in every track, African style beats and vocals and all original songs. After the successful release of the other Witch album Lazy Bones, here is the earlier Introduction. Crazy & wild fuzz guitars all over, African beats and chanting, as good as it gets. Incredible cool and stoned album from the southern African country. Again we need to say: if you're feeling depressed, low, disturbed, out-of-sorts, sad, frustrated or widely demented, then folks, we suggest you seek out a quiet place, indulge in some soothing meditation and cut away that headache by listening to this inspirational album.

*The 'Shaking, waking' LP consists of two lengthy tracks: 'Tidal Blackness' is a 23 minute cloud of improvised guitar and bass drone, underpinned with sparse percussive elements and dappled with the rays of ethereal melodies. This track, recorded live in Oakland in 2008, represents the more gentle side of HEAVY WINGED in some ways and is largely soothing. The second side harbours 'Morning Flesh', 18 minutes that veer towards the caveman Krautrock of the recent 'Alive in my mouth' LP, drums pounding, Neanderthal guitar chugging, though with a melodic haze drifting across the musical landscape like a lysergic mistral, leading the listener ever further into the shifting sands of the forbidden zone.

MGR / Shipping Gold: Hyper-slow development and dread-ridden tension building reveal themselves in Shipping Gold as in past MGR work, as well as the subtle swelling and closing of sonic space. Shipping Gold attracts our ears particularly due to its dramatic use of guitar in the foreground. Composed with both acoustic and electric guitar and effects, Mike's vigorous attack's and pitch-bent decay over a slowly morphing theme in a minor key behaves like some unknown light guiding us; its rays looming over an intense psychic landscape. Xela / Calling For Vanished Faces: Musically, it would be useless to categorize Calling For Vanished Faces as 'noise,' 'sound art' or anything aforementioned. In basic terms, every time we listen to this utterly mind-altering composition we discover something new; something to grab on to within its lush spectrum of dynamics. Bombarded with pulsating drumming, distant early-music inspired vocal harmonies, guitar distortion, morphing electronic buzzes and guitar feedback, Calling For Vanished Faces is a sonic arcade of sorts and delights the listener with each passing experience.

*out of print from the label, but does not include bonus cd… The Monolith series combines two artists on the same one-sided, reverse-cut LP by hard-panning one recording to the right and the other recording to the left. By adjusting the panning controls on his or her turntable, the listener is free to control the degree to which the two recordings melt into one. Each edition in the series is limited to a one-time pressing of 500 picture disc LPs featuring a Monolith inspired painting by Ned Clayton and includes a CD with stereo mixes, extended versions, and bonus tracks. Monolith: Earth is the oxymoronic pairing of dreamcore drone legends Windy and Carl and new school leaders of free rock Heavy Winged. Heavy Winged contribute one of their darkest, most oppressive tracks yet. The addition of Windy and Carl's purity creates something entirely different. It's no longer the sound of three bros busting out dark drone metal in some shed in snowy Vermont; it's now the sound of some communal artists busting out epic krautjams in the German hinterland. Primitive, vicious early man meets colossal pristine symbol of higher thought - could there be any better pairing for this Monolith?

*shop favorite restocked… Flowstoned and dethroned, finally. Last year’s bored/burning summer spell of Eagle Rock entropy birthed a numb drum ‘n drones duo dubbed Black Monk. The aesthetic of inept, free-punk drumming and red-eyed, void-surfing low-end infinity found output on two micro-limited cassette releases (one on Buried Valley, one on Zac/Lambsbread’s Maim & Disfigure) and one weedian live show (in Tempe, AZ) and then the scholars split to separate coasts. Fortunately for us/you, Flowstone comes crawling outta the caverns of a babeless summer on a slab of black wax, collecting their out-of-print Murmur CS and half the V CS, plus an unreleased side-long wastoid-land of subterranean percussion and roaring magma. *Last year's Mystic Induction LP captured PDX wah junkies Eternal Tapestry at their hairiest hour, awash in color trails and nightshade flashbacks. Since then they've reverted back to their original power trio line-up, circled the tube amps, and written a fresh, flooring set of brand new electric rippers. And The Invisible Landscape is the fruit of this from-bliss-to-blistering evolution/revolution. It's packed deep with six kraut-punk psych-shredders, huffing fumes from the twin guitar hero dogfighting of Dewey Mahood and Nick Bindeman while drum demon Jed Bindeman does barrel rolls and nosedives into the eye of the storm. There's also a rawness and warmth to the production that helps the songs bleed into the ear with more electricity than before, and the riff/vocals interplay is streamlined for optimum mainlining. A fiery high point for a fiery high band. Hit it or quit it. Missoula, Montana's Ex-Cocaine continue roping that weird rambling wind that seems to stir the soul and keep America mellow, and the pair of anthems they jam out here encapsulates the whole breadth of their sea-to-shining-sea cosmosis. Plainsong guitar lassoes around loose-limbed percussion flame-fanning, building and burning till a boss bonfire glows on the horizon, then they close out the side with a ragged and earnest Meat Puppets cover that's become a live staple of late. Real and roamin'. On the B, Yellow Swans channel a supreme slice of psychedelic eulogy that cuts twice as deep with the knowledge that after many a summer (they birthed in 2002-ish) dies the Swan. Pete and Gabe's DYS saga has spanned the decade and their impending non-existence will be lamented all over the world, so the more 11th hour record books they want to stencil with their electric synergies, the better for all of us. We Grow is the apex realization of every tectonic assault, wind tunnel vortex, and outer space meltdown HW have ever unleashed across the past 15 months worth of stunning CDRs, splits, and comp appearances. The A side, “A Stretch of Time,” slow-burns an ascent into explosive galactic violence, guitars, bass, and drums detonating into endless feedback fireworks. Then “Shifting Clouds” closes the album, marching a drifting riff of haze and mass into a majestic no man’s land of darkening space. A masterpiece record, and packaged accordingly. *While this trio first turned heads with their expansive psych/kraut/blues guitar explorations as embodied within a series of small run cassette and CDR releases, their 2007 Mystic Induction album on Not Not Fun firmly established the band as formidable players worthy of sharing the stage and spotlight with such current heads as Wooden Shjips and Kinski. Palace of the Night Skies ups the ante and represents this group’s heaviest jams to date, bringing forth some heavily righteous riffs and plenty of drum punishment. Palace of the Night Skies consists of two long-form tracks recorded in 2008 at the Tapestry Space in Portland, Oregon by the band’s core lineup of Dewey Mahood on guitar, Nick Bindeman (JOMF) on guitar and occasional vocals and Jed Bindeman (Heavy Winged) on drums. “Prism Light Traveller” covers the album’s entire first side and is rich with snarling and overblown psych guitar heroics. While no listener could ever ignore the big-time guitar workouts present throughout the album as a whole, Jed Bindeman’s deft and metronomic drumming propels “Prism…” along its trail straight into the fiery heart of the sun. Much as in his other band, Heavy Winged, Bindeman’s drums provide the perfect background for the dueling, multi-directional guitar work. The album’s second side is the substantially more pensive and atmospheric “The Hidden Void.” This track’s slow boil is punctuated with incendiary psych solos and cryptically buried vocals. Taken as a whole, Palace of the Night Skies is ready and able to provide any listener in need with the set and setting for a perfect night in. The LP is pressed on 180g RTI vinyl and housed within a classy letterpressed cover (courtesy of our buddies at dexterity press in chicago) bearing silver foil ink on deep midnight blue paper and bearing new artwork by loni gaghan. all copies of the album are accompanied by a glass-mastered CD (not CDR) of the two album tracks in addition to a bonus track (“hermetic secrets”).

*shop favorite restocked… gown (aka andrew macgregor and otherwise known as one-half of the bark haze with thurston moore) moved from western wassachusetts to nova scotia in mid-2007. before he moved, he wanted to have one big audio blow-out to remember the grand old mass times. with that goal in mind, gown went into the studio with the sunburned hand of the man gang (represented this time out by john moloney, sarah o'shea, ron schneiderman and taylor richardson) to melt some audio consoles. for the maples represents a portion of that recorded output and believe us, it's some massive stuff. sunburned's thick funk presents the perfect background for gown's shredding guitar-play. extremely hot stuff, especially the massive side-long "bending close." as per the three lobed standard, for the maples is pressed on 180g RTI vinyl. it is housed within silkscreened jackets (screen work by alan sherry / SIWA) bearing new artwork by gown. the record is from an edition of 698 copies and, and as an added convenience for our vinyl friends, will come packaged with a glass-mastered CD (not CD-R) of the material present on the wax.

*shop favorite restocked… Let's get the dirty work over with first. The Black Dirt Sessions is, all hyperbole aside, Jack Rose's most complete and telling work to date. Those who have been following this Philadelphia wanderer's development and growth as a solo artist (both live and on record) know that such a statement is strong praise, as Rose's catalog is certainly not devoid of unqualified classics. The album takes its title from the studio where it was recorded – Jason Meagher's Black Dirt Studios located in Westtown, New York. Old friends Rose and Meagher developed a good working relationship and full understanding of each other's work habits and styles over the course of a spring 2008 joint tour between Rose and one of Meagher's bands, D. Charles Speer and the Helix. Rose, that eternal road warrior, booked some time at Black Dirt between tours in August, September and October of 2008 to lay down some new and fully realized material. This album is the complete result of those sessions. Rose's prior albums have tended to both pick and remain true to a musical theme. The Black Dirt Sessions excels by displaying fully honed examples of all of Rose's various styles and themes – traditional, raga and ragtime. Central to the album's spirit is the absolutely epic "Cross the North Fork." This thirteen minute revisiting of a track first laid down on the great Kensington Blues is a winding, thoroughly engrossing journey. This new version is the product of Rose's perfectionist streak which constantly pushes him to re-explore and re-visit his prior works. As presented on The Black Dirt Sessions, the "new" track is full of rich nuances from Rose's years of additional scrutiny of the original composition. Much like Rose himself, "Cross the North Fork" is certainly comfortable in its skin and helps make it a welcome neighbor to the album's other splendid joys ranging from the jaunty and infectious "Fishtown Flower" (featuring a guest appearance from D. Charles Speer and the Helix's Hans Chew on ragtime piano) to the pensive and appropriate melancholy punch of "Box of Pine."

*Wool Recordings presents a very limited and silk-screened 10" vinyl release of 4 songs, including one previously-unreleased track, by '70s Estonian jazz ensemble Collage. "Halb Sirp" and "Vastlalaul" sum up the jazzy pop side of the band with very sweet vocals between traditional Estonian folk and Michel Legrand aspirations. On the second side "Neiud Lähevad Ära" and "Suur Tamm" deal more with the funky and break-y side of the band, which is what makes this band sound really unique for their time-period.

Recorded in January 13, 1965 by Roland Kirk (tenor saxophone, manzello strich, castanets and siren), Elvin Jones (drums), Jaki Byard (piano) and Richard Davis (double bass). This is the U.S. stereo version (the mono version released in the U.K. had different cover art). "First there is the elegant modal music of 'No Tonic Press,' with its non-linear mathematic groove maintained with verve by Jones in all the knotty spots. Then there is the ethereal Middle-Eastern harmony juxtaposed against the changes in 'Once in a While' by Bennie Green. But the whole thing comes together by the third tune, when Kirk sifts his hearing of New Orleans music into gear with 'From Bechet, Byas, and Fats.' Using his loopy manzello to approximate the soprano saxophone, Kirk and Byard trade fours on some odd open-D modal theme before shifting into the music of Bechet's time and coming out on tenor with direct quotes from the Don Byas book, with Byard and Davis turning around on a blues motif as Jones double times with a sheet of rim shots. Through the rest, the set moves consistently more outside, with Kirk flipping instruments and Jones and Davis turning the rhythmic patterns around on Byard, who takes it all in stride and shifts the harmonic levels to Kirk's intensity on the title track and 'Mystical Dream.' The set ends with the bluesy, somnambulant groove of 'Slippery, Hippery, and Flippery.' There's a paranoid opening with Jones running all over the kit, Byard slipping up and down the board, and Kirk making siren sounds before entering his bluesy post-bop nightmare of a jam that winds itself out over studio distortion, Kirk's noises, and a killer tenor solo that caps everything on the album. This Saharan sand-blizzard of fine-crushed glass will grind your face to a bloody pulp. Group Doueh play raw and unfiltered Saharawi music from the former colonial Spanish outpost of the Western Sahara. Doueh (pronounced "Doo-way") is their leader and a master of the electric guitar. He's been performing since he was a child playing in many groups before finally creating his own in the 1980s. Doueh says he's influenced by Western pop and rock music especially Jimi Hendrix and James Brown. His sound is distorted, loud and unhinged with an impressive display of virtuosity and style only known in this part of the world. His wife Halima and friend Bashiri are the two vocalists in the group. Sahrawi songs are from the sung poetry of the Hassania language. The music is based on the same modal structure as Mauritanian music, however, Doueh's style is a looser appropriation infused with a Western guitar scope, one that relies, in his words, as much on Hendrix as it does traditional Sahrawi music. It also adds a playful pop element that rarely filters through in this region. Doueh has turned down countless offers from Morocco and Europe to release his music but he decided to offer Sublime Frequencies access to his homemade recordings and photo archive for this amazing debut. *Group Bombino is the latest salvo from the Agadez music scene. Led by the guitar virtuoso Omara Mochtar (Bombino), the group's debut LP -- volume two in the Guitars From Agadez series, represents the latest chapter in the modern sound of the Tuareg revolution. As of 2008, the Tuareg rebellion is in full force again, and Bombino is in exile to parts unknown. Agadez has been cut off from the rest of the country. The only road that connects this legendary city with the rest of the country is littered with land mines and the only escorts are the military. This music and its messages of hope, justice, and desire for validation of the Kel Tamachek way of life ring louder than ever. Group Bombino are gaining mythic status in and around the Tuareg community for their incendiary live performances. Coming from the same scene as Group Inerane and sharing some of the same musicians, Group Bombino showcase both sides of the Tuareg guitar style. The first half of this CD features the "dry guitar" sound, an unplugged selection of songs sung among the dunes, camels and stars of the Tenere desert. The last five tracks demonstrate the electric fury of the full band, a melding of heavy, psychedelic guitar heroics with a raw, garage sound, back beat percussion, all swirling in extended trance rock moves.
