BOBBY BEAUSOLEIL- THE LUCIFER RISING SUITE 4LP BOX (ajna offensive, usa)
49.98usd/29.92gbp/33.17eur/4377jpy (approx)
*shop favorite repressed… Now, for the first time, all of the music composed for the soundtrack project has been compiled into a single public release. The Lucifer Rising Suite begins with the 1967 version of the soundtrack and continues through a logical sequence of the recordings made in the years spanning 1976-79. With respect to the latter, the original master tapes were mined for music that had not been heard by anyone in nearly three decades. The newly unearthed recordings were then restored, cleaned up and combined with those previously released to make the anthology as complete as possible. The compositions that comprise the Suite are sequenced in an order that tells a story, after a fashion. It is a story that may be impossible to tell in a strictly literary manner, one that -- like a mirror's reflection into another -- is both personal and allegorical. A complete anthology of the recordings made for the Lucifer Rising motion picture soundtrack by Bobby Beausoleil with The Freedom Orchestra and The Magick Powerhouse Of Oz. This fully authorized and definitive release will include: - Remastered recordings spanning 11 years, from the '67 recording to the Tracy Prison recordings of '78. - 4 full-length LPs worth of Lucifer Rising material with half being never-before-heard sessions personally selected by Bobby BeauSoleil. - 9 new pieces of art from Bobby: 8 record sleeve panels and one 2' x 3' poster. - 2 posters: one by Bobby BeauSoleil and one by Dennis Dread. - A much-extended version of the 'Fallen Angel Blues' piece by Bobby that originally appeared in the Kenneth Anger DVD set. - 'Hymns to the Solar Temple' -- impressions on a visit to Bobby at the Oregon Correctional Facility in Pendleton, Oregon by Dennis Dread. - The Saga of a Soundtrack by Michael Moynihan. - Art from Dennis Dread for the back of the LP box, also to be included as a 2' x 2' poster. - Art from Dennis Dread for the front lid of the box which will provide a window into the works of Bobby's to be found within. Remastered by Robert Ferbrache, well known for his work with Blood Axis, 16 Horsepower and others. All art has been created specifically for this release.
VETIVER- TO FIND ME GONE 2LP (dicristina stair builders, usa)
18.98usd/11.36gbp/12.60eur/1662jpy (approx)
*due to what i can only sum up as dilatory behavior, in shop for the first time some of the vetiver back catalog… To Find Me Gone is the second album by Andy Cabic’s ever-evolving band Vetiver, released two years after the debut self-titled release. Andy has since toured the world, usually as a member of Devendra Banhart’s band, and sometimes even with Vetiver. In those two years, Vetiver has expanded into a full-on singer-songwriter band/project, aided and abetted by some of the best players (and usually his best friends) in the extended family of which Cabic finds himself a member. Cabic explains, “This album sure has a lot of folks playing on it, same as on a Bobby Charles or Jerry Jeff Walker record, all good folks and friends.” Once again skillfully crafted, produced and mixed with Thom Monahan (as on the debut), To Find Me Gone is a much different, more free and mature effort, reflective of Cabic’s growth as a songwriter over the last two crazy, wonderful years. According to Cabic, “I feel the new album embodies the swirling duality of these last two years, the duality of presence and absence, both in how protracted its birth has been, and in its lyrical themes. There are scenes in the songs where figures come back from far away, to changes and time itself rolling by in their absence. To Find Me Gone has songs of remembrance and recollection, all made in order to conquer absence. It’s a different kind of album, in that I think it’s the kind of album you can get serious about and carry with you for a long time. In the end it’s about the songs, how they all run into one another, and ran over all of us, as we churned up this album.” Musically, there’s a dreamy Topanga Canyon vibe on select songs (maybe that’s the pedal steel calling on “No One Word”), and there’s also plenty of crunchy candy for those who have appreciated Cabic’s recent nod toward the magic of ’70s-era Fleetwood Mac (check out the screaming guitar outro of “Red Lantern Girls”). Yet everything is simply, amazingly Vetiver, not anything else; To Find Me Gone is Andy Cabic’s own original statement, one that many will consider as one of the finest albums of 2006.
KEVIN BARKER- YOU AND ME LP (gnomonsong, usa)
16.98usd/10.17gbp/11.27eur/1487jpy (approx)
*You & Me is Kevin Barker's debut album, released by gnomonsong. Though it's his first solo release under his own name, Barker's no newcomer to the scene--he's spent the last few years recording, touring, and collaborating with Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom, Vashti Bunyan, Vetiver, Antony and the Johnsons, and Espers, to name just a few. Essentially acting as everyone's favorite sideman, Barker has influenced and helped create a sound with which this generation is happily familiar. During his college days, Barker became interested in the finger-style guitar playing of John Fahey and Bert Jansch and began to record under the name Currituck County. This solo project (sometime a duo with Vetiver / Espers drummer Otto Hauser) recorded albums for Teenbeat Records, Troubleman Unlimited, and the UK's Track and Field Organisation. Now Barker has assembled an unbelievable group of musicians for You & Me. Produced by Thom Monahan (Vetiver, Lilys, Gary Louris, Devendra Banhart), the album features Pat Sansone (Wilco), Joanna Newsom, Jonathan Wilson (Elvis Costello, Jenny Lewis), Eric Johnson (Shins, Fruit Bats), and Otto Hauser (Vetiver, Espers). Full of sunny, rural country rock, You & Me recalls the rustic grooves of The Band and The Grateful Dead, the heady melancholy of Roy Harper, and the golden harmonies of CSNY.
VETIVER- THING OF THE PAST LP (gnomonsong, usa)
16.98usd/10.17gbp/11.27eur/1487jpy (approx)
*due to what i can only sum up as dilatory behavior, in shop for the first time some of the vetiver back catalog… Two years after the highly acclaimed To Find Me Gone, Andy Cabic and Vetiver return with a new album of old songs, all hidden treasures, entitled Thing of the Past. Think of it as Cabic's fully realized mix tape to the world--a collection of some of his favorite songs from some of his favorite records--but presented, sequenced, and in this case performed by Cabic himself, with a little help from his friends far and wide. Produced by Thom Monahan and Cabic, Thing Of The Past was recorded in 2007 in Sacramento and Los Angeles. The basic tracks were done live in the studio, with the resultant record clearly showcasing a tight-knit band of hugely talented musicians. As witnesses to their live shows over the past year will attest, this is a group in full mastery of their craft--fluid yet fully aligned, intuitively opening out or reigning in their power as the mood dictates. Featuring core Vetiver members Cabic (vocals/guitar/banjo), Brent Dunn (bass), Sanders Trippe (guitar/vocals), Otto Hauser (drums/keyboards) and Kevin Barker (guitar/banjo/vocals), the album includes contributions from two of Cabic's heroes, Vashti Bunyan (who duets on "Sleep A Million Years") and Michael Hurley (who does likewise on his own "Blue Driver"). Other players include "Farmer" Dave Scher (keyboard/pedal steel/melodica), Jason Quever (piano/keyboard), Ben Kunin (sarod), Jonathan Wilson (acoustic guitar), Emma Smith (violin), and vocalists Meara O'Reilly and Abigail and Lily Chapin. From good-time rocking on Hawkwind's "Hurry On Sundown" and Loudon Wainwright III's "The Swimming Song" to the beautiful triptych of songs that runs from Biff Rose's "To Baby" through Ian Matthews' "Road To Ronderlin" and Garland Jeffreys' "Lon Chaney," this is a diverse and harmonious collection of songs. With the album so centered around the lasting resonance of the song, the focus inevitably falls upon Cabic's warm, honey-toned vocals, which are perfectly suited to the material he's gathered. Rather than obvious plundering from the well-worn rock cannon, these are largely overlooked and forgotten tunes (spanning a period from 1967-1973, and mostly by US songwriters), dusted off, reverently refashioned, and given the opportunity to sing again. Though a few of the artists covered are well-known, many are not, and in selecting and performing these songs, Vetiver have appended enduring versions very much their own. As Cabic comments, "I think this is the best album I've yet to make, in no small part because the songs are so good, but also because I didn't write them, which offered me a useful combination of restraint and freedom in performing them, bringing out the best in myself and the other musicians. It was an experiment, and it was one of the best experiences I've yet to have recording anything."
WOODEN SHJIPS- VOL. 1 LP (holy mountain, usa)
16.98usd/10.17gbp/11.27eur/1487jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… The Wooden Shjips' earliest material was released on vinyl, pressed in small quantities that were either free or hard to come by and are now hopelessly out of print. Who are we to keep you away from the rush of "Shrinking Moon for You"? Vol. 1 collects all the tracks from the free 10-inch, the Dance, California 7-inch, and the SOL 7-inch.
AMANAZ- AFRICA CD (qdk media, usa)
12.98usd/7.77gbp/8.62eur/1136jpy (approx)
*shop favorite now available on compact disc and, for a limited time, at a very nice price… QDK Media releases an official reissue of Africa by Zambian heavy psych rockers Amanaz, licensed from band member Keith Kabwe. Amanaz was formed in 1973, and this record came out in 1975. Three of these songs are in the native language Bemba, and 9 songs are in English, recorded in Kitwe, the third biggest city in Zambia up North. Musically, it goes in the same direction as Blo, The Witch, and Question Mark, but this album is way cooler and more stoned with amazing fuzz guitar all over which sounds like an African version of early Cream. The cover makes it look very traditional, but after a few spins, you realize that this one is very special. It's sooo cool, sooo tightly-produced and easily comparable with UK underground albums with a touch of African beats. Still completely unknown, so this album has not been scored yet by the collector's scene. A real surprise -- extremely heavy yet extremely groovy in spots, too.
WITCH- LAZY BONES!! CD (qdk media, usa)
12.98usd/7.77gbp/8.62eur/1136jpy (approx)
*shop favorite now available on compact disc and, for a limited time, at a very nice price… QDK Media releases an official reissue of Zambian psych-rockers Witch, with their ridiculously good Lazy Bones!!, originally released in 1975. By the mid 1970s, the South African nation known as the Republic of Zambia had fallen on hard times. The new Federation found itself under party rule. Zambia's then-president engaged what was then Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in a political fencing match that damaged his country's ability to trade with its main partner. The Portuguese colonies of Angola to the west and Mozambique to the east were fighting their own battles for independence; conflict loomed on all sides of this landlocked nation. This is the environment in which the catchy -- if misleadingly-titled "Zam Rock" scene that flourished in 1970s Zambian cities such as Lusaka and Chingola emerged. Though full of beacons of hope for its numerous musical hopefuls, it was a tumultuous time, and it's no wonder that the Zambian musicians taken by European and English influences gravitated to the hard, dark side of the rock and funk spectrum. From the little of the Zambian '70s rock and funk music that has been spread via small blogs and bootlegs -- the likes of Chrissy Zebby, Paul Ngozi and the Ngozi Family, and the devastating Peace -- we learn that fuzz guitars were commonplace, driving rhythms as influenced by James Brown's funk as Jimi Hendrix's rock predominated, and the bands largely sang in the country's national language, English. The European and North American compilers that had, say, fallen in love with the wonders of Nigeria's '70s scene via an introduction by Afro-Beat maestro Fela Kuti and decided to journey to Lagos to investigate further never even bothered to visit Zambia. Only a small number of the original Zam Rock godfathers that remained in the country survived through the late-'90s, when the music recorded in Zambia became the next frontier for those global-psychedelic rock junkies searching for the next fix. Normal Records, in conjunction with Los Angeles' Now-Again Records and Zam Rock pioneer Rikki Ililonga licensed this album from the last remaining member of Witch, Emmanuel Jagari Chanda. Hopefully, the music he and his late compatriots created will now reach a larger audience. One that they truly deserve. Another out-of-nowhere African '70s rock discovery in the Blo mold, privately pressed on a small local label, this five-piece electric band plays a strong electric African underground style. Tons of wah-wah fuzz guitar in every track, African-style beats and vocals and all original songs. If bands from Nigeria such as Blo and Ofege and bands from Zambia such as Rikki Ililonga and Chrissy Zebby are all traveling on the psychedelic highway at 100 mph, the Witch overtakes them with 120.
INDEX- INDEX LP (valord/dc, usa)
24.98usd/14.95gbp/16.58eur/2187jpy (approx)
*Last copies of this official reissue from 2004 of the first Index LP, originally released in 1967. All copies have a certain amount of edge-warp (as expected, I guess) and are sold as is… Much has been written about this incredible band. Much of it isn't true. I want to set the record straight. Index was formed in the early spring of 1967 in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. I was 18 years old when I met a chain-smoking 16-year-old named Gary Francis. Our conversation soon got around to rock and roll. He told me that he and his friend, John Ford, were forming a band. I told him that I played drums and we arranged a jam session at John's home on Lakeshore Drive. Our first meeting was incredible. Our sound was full and powerful. John's lead guitar techniques were fresh and innovative. After our first sessions we knew we had something special. Index was born. Soon we hit the local 'sock hop' circuit, playing at high schools and teen clubs in the area. We poured our unique sound out at The Hideout, Undercroft and G.P. War Memorial every weekend. One afternoon John pulled out a new album he had been listening to. It was a new band with a mind-shattering sound called 'The Jimi Hendrix Experience.' John played some songs he had written inspired by this 'psychedelic' sound. Over the next few days, 'Fire Eyes,' 'Shock Wave' and 'Feedback' were written. This album was recorded in December of 1967 at the Ford estate. It is recorded in mono sound with literally one microphone and with all instruments and vocals recorded at the same time. The cover photo is of 'Orpheus and Bacus,' founders of a singing group John joined at Yale. The stiff, board-like figures seem to characterize the exact opposite of this musical collection. This reissue is taken from the original recordings. Nothing has been added and all songs are in their original length. Over the years various bootleg copies of this album have surfaced but this is the original work. -- Jim Valice

JAMES FERRARO- LAST AMERICAN HERO LP (olde english spelling bee, usa)
21.98usd/13.16gbp/14.59eur/1924jpy (approx)
*Remastered reissue of an obscure tape that came out in a Europe-only edition in late 2008 on Dreamtime Taped Sounds - the label run by Lieven Martens of Dolphins Into The Future. This is a very unique work in the massive Ferraro discography as it employs rock instrumentation in a minimalist fashion to dazzling effect. Features the tracks 'F-150 Night Eros At The Highways End', 'Blacktop Tumble Weed: Empty Monster Energy Drink Can', & 'Headlines (Access Hollywood)'. Limited edition of 450 copies. Includes a download coupon for the mp3 version." "Fantastic new album from James Ferraro - a series of meditations on American concepts of heroism and freedom as refracted via MTV, Hollywood and various black magic marketing strategies. Starts off with an unexpected slow avant blues guitar piece that picks up organ and synth to sound uncannily like early Charalambides before breaking into an electric boogie that serves to conflate notions of authentic outlaw forms and clichéd rebel shorthand while sounding totally fucked up." - David Keenan, Volcanic Tongue
FOREST SWORDS- DAGGER PATHS MLP (olde english spelling bee, usa)
19.98usd/11.96gbp/13.26eur/1749jpy (approx)
*Wirral's Forest Swords make a textured, gauzy music as indebted to the Liverpool region's rich musical heritage as it is to the bleak-yet-beautiful coastal environment from which it was born. The result is something completely organic, sounding like a dancehall mix of Mogwai's more luscious soundscapes, Burial's sample-strewn claustrophobia, and Ennio Morricone's spaghetti western scores. The record's sweaty and thunderous dub grooves and cavernous guitar licks rub shoulders with R'n'B shuffles, dread-soaked percussion, and heady drones to create a visceral and epic sound. Dagger Paths consists of specially remastered versions of songs from the out-of-print cassette singles Miarches and Glory Gongs, along with brand new tracks. Full color pro-printed covers and insert - also includes a download coupon for the mp3 version.
RANGERS- SUBURBAN TOURS LP (olde english spelling bee, usa)
19.98usd/11.96gbp/13.26eur/1749jpy (approx)
*Rangers is Joe Knight. Suburban Tours is his debut vinyl release after a string of popular cassette albums in 2009 - including Low Cut Fades on Not Not Fun. His sound has been referred to out in blogland as 'elevator psyche' and 'mirrorball funknagogic pop' - and that's not a bad start considering his music is often bass-driven with washes of synth and prog-psych guitar riding over the top. Unlike the extended side-long collages of his cassette releases, Suburban Tours is a collection of eleven concise 'pop' songs that were written and recorded after moving to San Francisco from his native Texas. Not knowing anyone in this new locale, he describes the period after the move as being extremely lonely and plagued with near-constant rainfall. So he holed up and focused his attentions on recording a batch of songs that reflected on his suburban upbringing outside of Dallas and what he calls the 'failed connections with nature' that exist in these suburban zones (fake lighting, cranked-up air conditioning, golf courses, and gated 'communities' where everyone keeps to themselves). But despite the loneliness and melancholic themes there is a remarkable amount of color to his music. Like it's the sound of what he'd want to have playing on his headphones while riding a bike through these neighborhoods -- the sound necessary to make these places seem lively and fun. Music blog Visitation Rites hits the nail on the head when saying 'his music reflects a parallel fixation with the tape reel as a cutting board for the psychic trappings of middle class American youth.' Rangers is drawing from an entirely different set of musical influences than the rest of his peers - combining a passion for Manchester's Northern Soul sound with early '80s rock radio staples like Rush and The Police and the '70s prog-fusion of Weather Report. Plus he's got the chops to pull off this unlikely union -- in fact the cutting engineer for Suburban Tours was utterly baffled and commented that it sounded to him like a lost Steely Dan session recorded onto a mangled microcassette tape. That's a good thing, right? Full color pro-printed covers and insert - also includes a download coupon for the mp3 version.
MOON DUO- ESCAPE LP (woodsist, usa)
16.98usd/10.17gbp/11.27eur/1487jpy (approx)
*San Francisco's Moon Duo was formed in 2009 by Sanae Yamada and Erik Johnson (Wooden Shjips). Inspired initially by the legendary John Coltrane and Rashied Ali, Moon Duo counts such variant groups as Silver Apples, Royal Trux, Moolah, Suicide, and Cluster as touchstones. Utilizing primarily guitar, keyboards, percussion, and vocals, the pair plays space against form to create a primordial and disorienting sonic stew. They released two acclaimed records in 2009: the Love on the Sea 12-inch single on Sick Thirst and the Killing Time EP on Sacred Bones. Escape, their debut long-player on Woodsist, marks the fullest realization yet of the young group's evolving sound.
GANGLIANS- GANGLIANS LP (woodsist, usa)
16.98usd/10.17gbp/11.27eur/1487jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Sacramento's Ganglians want an island somewhere where they can soak in the sun and prowl the canopy by night. It's not often that they do get out, but they can get down for that. Recording sometimes as one, sometimes as four it's a real game to figure out where the entity comes from and where it's going. First and foremost it's about uncertain pleasures. It's a bit like choose your own adventure. There's 'codeine balladry'; a slightly upsetting tempo that is quickly flushed into an aural high, the next moment you're in the toy strewn abyss of the bedroom and then out to the tribal caves of the natives. The planets align and the sun beats down, palms tingling, and you are on the island they've built, the scenery constantly shifting for a better view, of you.
MENEGUAR- THE IN HOUR LP (wood

16.98usd/10.17gbp/11.27eur/1487jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Switching instruments and experimenting with recording techniques, Meneguar has cooked up a totally unique (and surprising) record. The In Hour channels the spontaneity and aesthetics of Swell Maps, the pop hooks of the Zombies, and lyrical collage of Guided By Voices. Everything was home recorded at their little Xanadu in Brooklyn, Rear House, home base to Jeremy Earl's Woodsist label (Blues Control, Sic Alps, Wooden Wand, Jana Hunter) and the changing roster of Meneguar's alter egos (Woods, Shepherds). Only six months since their last record, The In Hour represents a serious departure that still holds true to the band's undeniable pop sensibility.
PINK REASON- WINONA 7” (woodsist, usa)
6.98usd/4.18gbp/4.63eur/611jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… During a show with hardcore punks Hatefuck, DeBroux and company traveled to Winona, Minnesota. After a five-hour drive to the town, wasted locals, angry punks and gnarled three-legged dogs greeted them by leading them into a commandeered park. Inside the park, DeBroux found 'the ultimate punk rock experience' with townies huffing rubber glue and mohawk-brandishing kids starting fights with crusties. The show ended and the locals gave the band three dollars for their troubles. A few kids asked DeBroux and company to chip in the three dollars on a keg. Soon, the crowd dispersed and left the band with no money or place to stay. The band wound up sleeping on an island between Minnesota and Wisconsin and breaking up soon thereafter. He wrote the first Pink Reason song, 'Winona,' about this experience.' --Steve Kobak from Blastitude #25
PSYCHEDELIC HORSESHIT- SHITGAZE ANTHEMS MLP (woodsist, usa)
16.98usd/10.17gbp/11.27eur/1487jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… After about a 2 year absence, Psychedelic Horseshit is back with an EP of alleged B-sides from an upcoming full length. And what has happened since we last peeked in on these 'shitgaze' innovators? Well, in parts all over the world that famous 'distorto-lo-fi-sound' has been popping up in quite open spaces. No Age has become the new Brittany Spears, Wavves crashed in outta nowhere like a mid-nineties major label grunge signing, and cute and sweet Vivian Girls are playing on the speakers in Target stores nationwide. What does this have to do with the new Psychedelic Horseshit EP? Well, nothing really, except that if you expect to hear that tried and true lo-fi sound, that is now so en vouge, you might be a little disappointed cause these boys have cleaned up a little bit, and from the sound of things this might only be the beginning. 'I only listen to OK Computer and Cranes. The Fall sucks, DIY sucks, we suck, you suck.' said Matt Horseshit in a recent interview. 'Why should anyone listen to you then?' replied the reporter. 'Because we're FUN, duh.' And even though you wanna hate 'em, you gotta admit, they kinda are fun. Matt is a dick, of course, and Rich is hilariously clueless mostly, and by all means most of the stuff on this Shitgaze Anthems EP shouldn't work, whether it be the white-boy dub section, the cliche acoustic ballad with backwards guitar, the blatant Dylan rips or the overall amateur playing, but for some reason these elements that usually reek of pretention and failure actually endear you to the band and their songs. Yes, they're called Psychedelic Horseshit. Yes, they do suck, but I'll be damned if they aren't one of my favorite bands in the world, and they're only getting better, but if I tried to tell you why it'd only make 'em sound worse. So it goes.
KURT VILE- CONSTANT HITMAKER LP (woodsist, usa)
16.98usd/10.17gbp/11.27eur/1487jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… LP from Philadelphia lo-fi bedroom psych singer/songwriter Kurt Vile . Originally released on CD in 2008 on Gulcher Records. "Constant Hitmaker's songs are varied and twisted in their arrangements, but most often include exquisite melodies floating atop a bed of hissing psych-pop experiments that fall together as nearly perfect pop songs. The album is steeped in an atmosphere of four-track recording and homespun obscurity, however it frequently, almost if by mistake, references a collection of some of pop music's best: My Bloody Valentine are felt on 'Space Forklift,' Lee Hazlewood's spirit haunts 'Slow Talkers,' and Lou Reed adorns 'Don't Get Cute.' All this without mentioning the album's most distinct song, 'Freeway,' the lone studio recording and a piece of music that will become lodged in every head that hears it. Constant Hitmaker comes off a bit straighter than anything on the Siltbreeze label, but more lovingly deranged than most every other indie rock album. It's something noteworthy, no doubt, and not just because it lives up to its title." -- Skyscraper Magazine
VIVIAN GIRLS- TELL THE WORLD 7” (woodsist, usa)

WOODS- SONGS OF SHAME LP (woodsist, usa)
16.98usd/10.17gbp/11.27eur/1487jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… The fourth full length by Woods, Songs of Shame, rips deeper with both 90-second and 10-minute forays into skeletal psychedelia. This is not to say the idiosyncratic songwriting style & vocalizing of Jeremy Earl is not present in spades but expanded, colored, and twisted into a tie-dye of soundscapes. Having toured incessantly over the last 12 months as a four piece (Jarvis Taveniere, G. Lucas Crane & Kevin Morby round out the band), many of the songs on Shame benefit from having been road worn, windblown, and deeply grooved.
ROBERT MARTIN- LONG GOODBYE LP (yik yak, usa)
16.98usd/10.17gbp/11.27eur/1487jpy (approx)
*Long Goodbye opens with some broken acoustic noodling that sounds like a Derek Bailey slow motion replay, over which a double-tracked cry of voices transmits mournfully, meticulously, and with an unnerving sense of purpose. From there it gets stranger and more beautiful, as Martin sings with unique abandon -- is there such a thing as sad joy? -- often wordlessly, frequently incoherently. The tunefulness of Martin's achingly beautiful voice sits in sharp contrast to the crudely played guitar, and sets Martin apart from his lamentably more 'in the know' contemporaries. There are few touchstones for the magic contained herein -- Bobb Trimble at his most wounded, Tony Caro and John's All On The First Day LP, the earliest blues recordings of Guitar Roberts -- but Martin's intensely private music is all his own. And now, ours to share. --James Jackson Toth, San Francisco, July 2007

SIC ALPS/MAGIK MARKERS- SPLIT TOUR LP (yik yak, usa)

*Repress of a December 2009 West Coast tour split 12", with different colored artwork… Sic Alps give up three tracks with help from Lars Finberg (Intelligence) and Ty Segall, the highlight being a great punched-in guitar solo from Matt Hartman that makes one song reminiscent of a Safe As Milk outtake. Markers show up with a 7ft bass player who throws the band into Guru Guru mode. Great all around. 600 copies.

MICHAEL HURLEY- IDA CON SNOCK LP (gnomonsong, usa)
16.98usd/10.17gbp/11.27eur/1487jpy (approx)
*due to what i can only sum up as dilatory behavior, in shop for the first time some of the gnomonsong back catalog… Michael Hurley is one of the last remaining ramblin' American folk troubadours. Hobo-ing around the country, making music since the days Bob Dylan first set foot in New York City's Gaslight club, Hurley recorded his first album for Moses Ash's legendary Folkways label in 1964 and continued to release albums for both Warner Brothers and Rounder. His mid-'70s Have Moicy album was among the top ten for the decade selected by Rolling Stone magazine. While many of his contemporaries are long past their prime (or deceased), Hurley's muse is still intact. Hurley's songwriting talent hasn't gone unnoticed by a new generation of musicians. In recent years, he was invited to tour with alt-country heroes Son Volt and Lucinda Williams. He's also shared bills with Smog and Palace Brothers, played with the Giant Sand rhythm section, and has of course appeared with (and been covered by) Vetiver and appeared on their records. His songs have also been covered by indie stars Cat Power and Yo La Tengo, among others. So, the matter at hand, a new album of recordings sung and played by Hurley, backed by Ida, appropriately titled Ida Con Snock: Snock himself marvels at this 21st studio album, recorded at Levon Helms' studio in Woodstock, NY. Ida's less-is-more finesse shines on these rich recordings, melding perfectly with Hurley's playing and singing. Many of these songs are already well familiar to Hurley's devotees. There are seven originals and five loving covers of '50s rock 'n' roll, C&W, and vintage folk, each tune capturing Hurley and band at peak performance levels.
MICHAEL HURLEY- ANCESTRAL SWAMP LP (gnomonsong, usa)
16.98usd/10.17gbp/11.27eur/1487jpy (approx)
*due to what i can only sum up as dilatory behavior, in shop for the first time some of the gnomonsong back catalog… Ancestral Swamp is the 20th full-length album by legendary rambler, cartoonist, “outsider” folk singer, and guitarist Michael Hurley. It arrives just in the nick of time for the rabid Snockophile. A batch of new vittles and encores of some of his classic tunes, Ancestral Swamp bubbles with laid-back ease and tremolodic goodness. Most songs have the simplest of arrangements: Hurley singing solo, accompanied by his guitar, Wurlizter organ, or fiddle. Tara Jane O’Neil helps lend a nice touch to “El Dorado,” and Snock calls upon frequent past accomplices Dave Reisch and Louie Longmeyer for their graceful touch on sleepy winners like “New River Blues” and “Gamblin’ Charlie.” As with all Hurley’s albums, once one sets the needle down, one is put in a certain peace and place. His voice and songs are unique, shuffling with characters and visions clear and wild. With Ancestral Swamp, it seems Snock has left his front door open a bit wider than usual. If you lean in close, you can inhale a little of the vapor rising off the water, and enjoy a tale or two. Snock has personally test marketed The Ancestral Swamp” and the results are in: “The Ancestral Swamp is actually a good party record, even though fraught with dirges of dying and death.
GLOBAL SOUNDS
V/A- NIGERIA AFROBEAT SPECIAL: THE NEW EXPLOSIVE SOUND IN 1970S NIGERIA 3LP (soundway, uk)
29.98usd/17.95gbp/19.90eur/2625jpy (approx)
*Deluxe gatefold triple lp version, featuring five bonus tracks not available on the cd… This is the fourth addition to the Nigeria Special series, a project initiated in 2004 by Miles Cleret, owner of the Soundway record label. Focusing on the big-band sound dominated by wailing saxophones, brass solos and relentless poly-rhythmic grooves, Nigeria Afrobeat Special delivers a no-nonsense collection of tracks that (bar one) have NEVER been re-issued outside of Nigeria. It was Fela Kuti and his musical and political ideals that formed the core of Afrobeat's message. Fela's highly sought-after version of "Who're You?" lends this set its lead. Originally released on 7" in 1971, it would later be re-recorded at Abbey Road for his album Fela's London Scene and is re-issued here for the first time ever. The collection features Fela's rival and fellow Afrobeat veteran Orlando Julius, represented by the track "Afro-Blues" -- amazing that this has previously managed to escape re-issue. Also featured are tracks by big names on the Nigerian scene -- Eric Akaeze, Bongos Ikwue and Segun Bucknor as well as a Victor Uwaifo-produced cut by previously unknown artist Andrew "Madman" Jaga. The album also features a cut featuring Pax Nicholas, a singer whose album Na Teef Know De Road Of Teef has recently been made available after 30 years. Cleret's ambition to distinguish the blossoming music scenes of 1970s Nigeria has lent to an indispensable series of CD and LP compilations documenting the influence of western blues, rock and disco amongst artists and musicians versed in the local musical styles of highlife and juju.
V/A- NIGERIA SPECIAL VOLUME 2: MODERN HIGHLIFE, AFRO-SOUNDS & NIGERIAN BLUES 1970-76 3LP (soundway, uk)
29.98usd/17.95gbp/19.90eur/2625jpy (approx)
*Deluxe gatefold triple lp version, featuring three bonus tracks not available on the cd… The Soundway label presents a second volume in their Nigeria Special series. This volume features tracks that have been forgotten or out of print for nearly 35 years, but have since been tracked down and documented by Miles Cleret. The fruits of this arduous labor has taken over 10 years of dedication, research and travel to Nigeria, now culminating in the final part of Soundway's extensive survey of Nigeria's forgotten musical history. The range of styles on Nigeria Special Volume 2 vary from highlife to Juju and Nigerian blues in the languages of Yoruba, Igbo, Bini and Ijaw. With a peppering of "Afro" experimentation, the same musical stew pervades volume 2 as its predecessor -- some artists appear again alongside some new artists as the emphasis continues to focus on the laid-back and mid-tempo feel found on volume 1. It includes the bluesy guitar band style of The Otarus and The Peacocks International Guitar Band, sitting opposite the more uptempo sound of highlife legends Stephen Osita Osadebe (here bringing his Igbo version of the Cuban standard "Peanut Vendor") and Paulson Kalu. Progressive outfits Black Zenith's', The Don Isaac Ezekiel Combination, Tunji Oyelana, The Nkengas, Opotopo and Joy Nwoso remind us that these were indeed experimental times with their fusions of jazz, highlife and in the case of Nwoso, opera!
V/A- GHANA SPECIAL: MODERN HIGHLIFE, AFRO-SOUNDS & GHANAIAN BLUES 1968-81 5LP BOX (soundway, uk)
55.98usd/33.51gbp/37.16eur/4902jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Deluxe 5LP box version containing 2 exclusive tracks not available on cd or digital download, plus two tracks previously only available on the CD version of Ghana Soundz. Includes a large, high-quality 12-page booklet stuffed with rare photos, label scans and a detailed history of the period. Ghana in the 1970s: highlife, rock, and soul collide and merge with tradition and culture. New styles meet old styles. A new generation renews old musical customs. New fashions meet old fashions, creating new fusions. Soundway presents 33 original and previously un-reissued tracks from the time: obscure A-sides, B-sides and album cuts that have resisted a second look until now. Compiler and label boss Miles Cleret travelled many times to Ghana to track down these long-lost and unavailable recordings. Ghana Special focuses on a variety of the vast number of diverse musical styles made in Ghana at that time -- a selection of 33 tracks hand-picked from a multitude uncovered over nearly 10 years of on-going research: driving around the cities of Ghana, banging on musician's doors, visiting distributors, DJs, collectors, manufacturers and shop owners. The roots of this project go back to a pair of albums named Ghana Soundz (Volumes 1 and 2), which focused solely on the "funkier" side of the same period. Alongside new artists and groups, some other works of the many musicians and producers Cleret met while researching those records are also included here. Many of these tracks have remained only in people's memories or in collections of LPs that sit unplayed: until now, of course.
