26.98usd/16.43gbp/18.25eur/2462jpy (approx)

*This album compiles the very beginnings of one of the longest lasting groups in the history of American Music. Active from 1927 to 1956, the legendary Carter Family were originally a trio and dug deeply into the musical tradition of southwestern Virginia, bringing to light a number of gospel and folk songs that made them superstars in their day and later went on to inspire many revival groups of the sixties and seventies.

V/A- OUAGA AFFAIR: HARD WON SOUND OF THE UPPER VOLTA 1974-1978 2LP (savannaphone, uk)

An essential document of the raw, eccentric sounds of the Upper Volta's golden age, produced in the turbulent environment waged by the country's oppressive government.

ROCK AND PSYCHEDELIC

V/A- RAKS! RAKS! RAKS! 17 GOLDEN GARAGE PSYCH NUGGETS FROM THE IRANIAN 60s SCENE LP (raks, eec)
34.98usd/21.30gbp/23.66eur/3192jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Raks Discos is proud to present one of the most anticipated as well as unexpected compilations from the global depths of '60s and '70s rock'n'roll: The Persian scene. Let alone coming across with a representative compilation, even solid evidences of such a scene has not been seen until now and has been largely suspected, maybe save for a select few of eager garage and psychedelic record collectors and enthusiasts of worldwide rock, who have been trying to hunt such sounds on the internet and private collectors' circles, usually to no avail. Needless to say, the most important factor in this has been the obvious hideously rare status that Iran's pre-Revolution East-West cross cultural artifacts are in right now. As with almost all Asiatic countries, the Shadows and the Ventures seem to be the true and primal influence in the Iranian music scene of the most part of '60s for the rock sound and attitude to penetrate the country's fledgling record industry and its swinging public base. In 1964, the legendary Top4 company opened up and started releasing choice chart hits from the worldwide lists, on 4-track EPs, followed soon by MonoGram and other companies. These mixed up records featured a lot of popular songs of the day, spanning the whole European continent i.e. including what's referred to now as 'Euro pop' hits and the 'big brothers,' UK and US charts. The day's youth back then was lucky: they could follow the West moment by moment now. The foremost impact of these were to feature and spread British invaders, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, otherwise available only on radio. Come 1966, '60s was in full swing in Iran too! On eye-popping purple & green Persian rug-colored vinyl. Includes full-color glossy insert with liner notes and rare photos.

NEU!- NEU! 75 LP (united artists, eec)
24.98usd/15.21gbp/16.90eur/2280jpy (approx)

*nice looking/sounding repro with gatefold sleeve… recorded and mixed at Conny Plank's studio between December 1974 and January 1975. It was released in 1975 by Brain Records in germany (and on united artists in the uk, the pressing of which this package reproduces) This album saw Neu! re-group after a few years' break, during which time Michael Rother had worked together with Cluster in the krautrock 'super group' Harmonia. By this time, Rother and bandmate Klaus Dinger had somewhat diverged in their musical intentions for the band, Dinger preferring a more aggressive, rock-influenced style than Rother's ambient predilections. As a result, they agreed to a compromise: side one of the record was recorded in the old Neu! style, as a duo, with Dinger playing drums. However for the pieces of side two, Dinger switched to guitar and lead vocals, recruiting his brother Thomas and Hans Lampe to play drums (simultaneously). The result is essentially a split record, subtly melodic in the first half and boldly unconventional in the second. On both sides the use of keyboards and phasing is increased compared to earlier records. -wikipedia

DJ FABYO- ANATOLIA ROCKS: A MUSICAL TRIP THROUGH TURKEY 1968-83 CDR (worldwide productions, france)
21.98usd/13.33gbp/14.94eur/1997jpy (approx)

*i had the wrong description for this one last week, so here you go… During the '60s and '70s, the Turkish knew how to blend the exciting sound of pop music coming from United States and Europe with local inspirations and folklore better than anybody. Listen to the electric saz and darbouka mixed with the best fuzz guitar. Worldwild production is proud to present 18 jewels of this interesting and unknown genre called Anatolian rock. Enjoy!" 18 tracks compiled and produced by DJ Fabyo. Artists include Umit Tokcan, Erkin Koray, Esin Afsar, Edip Akbayram & Dostlar, 3 Hür-El, Kim Bunlar, Selda, Erkin Koray, Baris Manco, Fikret Kizilok, Nurcan Opel, Cem Karaca Ve Apaslar, Grup Bunalim, Mustafa Ozkent, Baris Manco, Mavi Isiklar, Galatasaray Lisesi and Erkin Koray. PUNK AND POST-PUNK

PUBLIC IMAGE LIMITED- ALBATROSS: MELODRAMA MIX 12” (white label, usa)
12.98usd/7.90gbp/8.78eur/1184jpy (approx)

*new limited white label 12" with two of the 'Metal Box' monitor mixes -sourced from John Lydon's 'Best of British £1 Notes' dvd- featuring 'Albatross: Melodrama Mix' and 'Death Disco: monitor mix'… “The PiL monitor mixes of 'Albatross' and 'Death Disco' included as "audio extras" are arguably the highlight of the DVD for me. Only recently rediscovered; these are the live unedited takes from the studio. Powerful and stunning doesn't cover it. The full version of 'Death Disco' (reaching near 10 minutes) says it all to me. If you aren't affected by it; then I afraid you don't get PiL, it really is as simple as that. You'll never hear a more honest or frightened vocal… the second version of 'Albatross' known as the "Melodrama Mix", although keeping a similar backing track [to the released version] also features Wobble on melodica. I'd never realized PiL had experimented with melodica, but given their interest in reggae it's probably only natural, but it was perhaps too obvious a reference and it never made the finished version. The "Melodrama Mix" is mostly "dubby" but still includes a vocal, well, it actually includes two. As well as John's prominent chorus (and I use the term very loosely), you also get Wobble messing about in the background, screaming, and shouting ("I'm a bleeding great Albatross!"). The whole track was probably just a bit of fun in the studio that was never meant to see the light of day, but it's not without its merit. The difference between this light hearted take of 'Albatross' and the emotion of 'Death Disco' are just another example of what PiL were all about." –scott m/fodderstompf

COLD CAVE- CREMATIONS LP (hospital productions, usa)
15.98usd/9.73gbp/10.81eur/1458jpy (approx)

COLD CAVE- CREMATIONS CD (hospital productions, usa)
13.98usd/8.51gbp/9.46eur/1276jpy (approx)

*shop favorite now available on vinyl, restocked on cd… Cremations is a collection of early demo/live/and unreleased tracks from Cold Cave. From the projects isolated beginnings to the recent full band line-up the development of this singular musical entity is documented here in its icy electronic glory. From Cold Cave’s infancy sexual identity and oblique existentialism have been expressed through biting lyrics and electronic minimalism. Rarely has the human condition been exposed so brazenly as in “Sex Ads”. Melodies, noise and rhythms clash as stories from below the surface are retold. From the demo LP Coma Potion, which featured a rugged stripped down distortion, to the suggestive Electronic Dreams tour cassette (featuring the voice of Max Morton on the track “Heavenly Metals”). Cold Cave has developed its own brand of genre defying electronic music, without ever betraying its dark roots. Love and pornography, Industrial music and traditionalism, poetry and profanity all mix together in a hedonistic, cocktail of nihilistic nights and mournful mornings. Cremations collects all this work for the first and last time.

MY BLOODY VALENTINE- BEFORE LOVELESS 2LP (lazy, usa)
26.98usd/16.43gbp/18.25eur/2462jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… amazing double lp package featuring the ‘ecstasy and wine’ album and mbv’s two eps ‘feed me with your kiss’ and ‘you made me realize’, all originally released on the uk label lazy (and long outta print). timeless and essential.

GREY AREA

DRUNKDRIVER/MATTIN- LIST OF PROFOUND INSECURITIES 12” (badmaster, usa)
13.98usd/8.51gbp/9.46eur/1276jpy (approx)

*new one on badmaster –after much manufacturing delay-… collaborative 12" from Drunkdriver & Mattin in two pieces. 21 minutes. wrapped, rather nicely, in embossed/letterpressed black 80lb coverstock.

TICKLEY FEATHER- TICKLEY FEATHER LP (badmaster, usa)
13.98usd/8.51gbp/9.46eur/1276jpy (approx)

*badmaster release from little ways back, but in stock for the first time… Tickley Feather are a bit of a revelation; trancey, elliptical folk/drum machine gallops that lilt with melody and feature these gorgeous female vocals. Annie Sachs has got a great one, especially in its higher registers, where she almost resembles Liz Fraser or Siouxsie. Hometaping sands off the edges roughly, but that makes it sound even more open and lost inside itself.-- Dusted Mag

T.A.S.K.- RELAXING TIME IS OVER LP (heartworm press, usa)
15.98usd/9.73gbp/10.81eur/1458jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… The brilliant first LP by the Berlin troupe T.A.S.K., Relaxing Time Is Over. All basic tracks on this album were recorded live in a Berlin living room studio in the winter of 2005 and the winter months of 2006 - NO SUMMER RECORDINGS. 11 songs of minimal psych pop with a Velvets' air of cool by way of the German psychedelic underground. T.A.S.K. is comprised of members of the insanely underrated Floating Di Morel and Metabolismus.

TAYLOR BOW- THIN AIR LP (youth attack, usa)
15.98usd/9.73gbp/10.81eur/1458jpy (approx)

*There is a dying plebeian ambivalence to the ghastly creaks and tragedies of New York City. Only here can one man come up against another, individually in a void, and speak collectively to the disintegration of his being. A city where the deluge of beauty is mystified by the constant groan of economy undermining a perpetually dissolving modernity. As it looms, it showers upon us the debris of its newest and most ragged disharmonies to stimulate our malignant activities and applaud the constant awakening of our intangible reality. These luminous sights, sounds, and sensations of this mythological frontier are but mere scuffles and flurries under the crumbling stone and iron exposed to the decay and the terror of the overwhelming shadows that engulf us. Limited edition of 600.

BLUES AND ROOTS

BLIND BLAKE- BACK BITING BEE BLUES LP (monk, italy)
26.98usd/16.43gbp/18.25eur/2462jpy (approx)

*Maybe Arthur 'Blind' Blake did not live too long but it was certainly enough to prove to the world that he was one of the blind geniuses the history of blues seems to be made of. Born in Florida in 1893, he died at the age of 40 in controversial circumstances -- booze? Car accident? -- leaving a good number of recordings for Paramount that made him famous as 'the king of ragtime guitar.' His astonishingly odd style made his riffs sound like a ragtime piano and his particular finger picking inspired many modern blues artists, Jorma Kaukonen among the best known.

BLIND LEMON JEFFERSON- I WANT TO BE LIKE JESUS IN MY HEART LP (monk, italy)
26.98usd/16.43gbp/18.25eur/2462jpy (approx)

*The epitome of a sort of 'dark' blues, Henry 'Blind Lemon' Jefferson lived a mere 35 years, during which time he became the quintessential bluesman, conjuring a personal mix of rural and urban blues, decrying the conditions of the sharecroppers and city slum dwellers alike. He actually got his start playing in brothels and barber shops, where he developed his theatrical vocal lament. Unfortunately this early genius of the blues allegedly met his premature demise by freezing to death in 1929 in America's Windy City.

BLIND WILLIE MCTELL- SCAREY DAY BLUES 2LP (monk, italy)
37.98usd/23.13gbp/25.69eur/3466jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… William Samuel McTier was born in Georgia in 1898 (according to some sources), and despite his blindness was a talented musician since early childhood. He began his recording career in 1927 for Victor Records in Atlanta and is credited with having created an entire blues sub genre by mixing the hard roots of the Delta style with the more refined East Coast style (Piedmont Blues). His unique 'country blues' can be heard on the grooves of this double LP collection brought to you by Monk records.

CHARLEY PATTON- ELECTRICALLY RECORDED: JESUS IS A DYING-BED MAKER LP (monk, italy)
26.98usd/16.43gbp/18.25eur/2462jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… 12 more tunes from Patton's 1929 recording sessions. Here the acknowledged 'King of the Delta blues' performs some of his finest spiritual blues, like the title track, and 'You're Gonna Need Somebody When You Die.' One the most seminal blues artists of all time, this collection helps keep the legend alive. All tracks recorded in Grafton, WI, October 1929.

CHARLEY PATTON- ELECTRICALLY RECORDED: HIGH WATER EVERYWHERE LP (monk, italy)
26.98usd/16.43gbp/18.25eur/2462jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… One step further into the life and music of this true superstar of early blues, this compilation features the two-part 'High Water Everywhere,' considered to be one of the greatest blues songs of all time, along with other pearls like 'Devil Sent The Rain Blues,' making this second episode of Monk's retrospective on Patton, another must have. Patton's ability to put the harsh everyday struggle of the Delta dwellers into music makes him one of the most enduring and soulful musicians in the entire history of blues. All tracks recorded in Grafton, WI, October 1929.

CHARLEY PATTON- ELECTRICALLY RECORDED: PRAYER OF DEATH LP (monk, italy)
26.98usd/16.43gbp/18.25eur/2462jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… From the granddaddy of Delta blues comes this incredible compilation of his greatest songs. Charley Patton's influence on music cannot be overstated. He began playing music around 1900 and by the time he was 19, about a decade later, he had already written his most popular tune 'Pony Blues' and was on his way to becoming the first superstar of the Delta Blues and a household name. He was soon the most requested performer all over the South and influenced many young musicians, like Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker and Robert Johnson, to name a few. But it was not only his mastery of the guitar and incredible vocal style that gained him popularity. His rock star-style showmanship and stage antics -- like playing guitar down on his knees or behind his back -- with a girl on each arm and drink in hand after the show, made him the idol of young would-be musicians (and non) everywhere he played. And like a true rock star, by age 42 he was dead, which of course, only fuelled his fame.

CHARLIE POOLE- HUSBAND AND WIFE WERE ANGRY ONE NIGHT LP (monk, italy)
26.98usd/16.43gbp/18.25eur/2462jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Born in North Carolina in 1892, singer and banjo player Charlie Poole is often considered to be one of the grandfathers of bluegrass and modern country music. Poole recorded 60 songs during the 1920s for Columbia Records with his wildly popular North Carolina Ramblers, so this LP is a small sampling of some of his very best songs, many of which, like his first big hit for Columbia, 'Don't Let Your Deal Go Down Blues,' are blues standards. Although Poole died of an alcohol-induced heart failure at just 39 years old, he still had plenty of time to influence bluegrass greats like Bill Monroe, and more indirectly, Hank Williams and the folk singers of the 1960s. Although Poole wrote none of his own material, his genius lay in his unique ability to rework a song, by changing lyrics and tempo, to make it something entirely new. In fact, many fans bought his records just to see 'how Charlie did it.' His North Carolina Ramblers sold huge numbers of records for the time and Poole became one of the first country music stars.

DOCK BOGGS- FALSE HEARTED LOVER'S BLUES LP (monk, italy)
26.98usd/16.43gbp/18.25eur/2462jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Born in 1898 in Norton, Virginia, singer/songwriter and banjo player Dock Boggs got his start playing in the mining camps while working in the mines all over the Appalachian region. In 1927, he got a contract with Brunswick Records and began recording and playing parties all over the area. This collection represents his complete recordings from 1927-1929 when Dock was at the beginning and height of his short-lived recording career. 1929, however, was also unfortunately the beginning of the Great Depression and, like many musicians, Dock was forced to give up playing professionally due to lack of audience (no one had money for records or parties anymore). He thankfully was rediscovered in the 1960s by the folk revival movement and went on to record three great albums for Folkways, before his death in 1971.

JAZZ

V/A- RAG & STOMP: A RETROSPECTIVE ON 1930S WESTERN SWING LP (monk, italy)
26.98usd/16.43gbp/18.25eur/2462jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… During the 1930s in the vast region of the American Southwest, particularly in Texas and Oklahoma, a younger generation gave birth to a new form of popular dance music. In the hard years of the depression, both rural enthusiasts who played by ear, and others who had basic notions of written music joined together and participated in the development of the so-called 'western swing'. The elements which flow into this music are easily detectable on recordings by western swing groups, melting white and black swing across the country (Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Cab Calloway, etc.), together with blues, fiddle music and ragtime, which was particularly strong in the regional heritage of Texas. Packaged in 78 rpm style deluxe plain cardboard sleeve.

DJANGO REINHARDT- THE 1938 LONDON DEBUT AND PARIS SESSIONS LP
(monk, italy)
26.98usd/16.43gbp/18.25eur/2462jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… While 1937 came to a close on the notes of the virtuoso 'Tea For Two,' 1938 began with the first appearance of the Quintette du Hot Club de France in England, an even greater sell-out event than Duke Ellington. The London recording sessions for Decca took place a few days after that event. Django played his own compositions, some jazz hits, and accompanied solos, the sound being now improved and more mature. The British episode was short but intense, and three more titles were recorded later, in August. In-between Django also recorded three sides with Benny Carter, who had widely played around Europe beginning in 1935. Packaged in 78 rpm style deluxe plain cardboard sleeve.

DJANGO REINHARDT- THE LAST YEARS OF PEACE: 1936-1937 LP
(monk, italy)
26.98usd/16.43gbp/18.25eur/2462jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… The British Decca company, who had distributed the early Ultraphone sides in England, was attracted by the sudden success of the band and decided to start, in the autumn of 1935, with new recording sessions, now at the enhanced Polydor studios in Paris. Although dealing with such musicians was often quite challenging for the German Polydor technical engineers, some of the results were musically remarkable, despite some low figure sales. Even during his Polydor-Decca phase Django recorded for other companies, including French Gramophone, and in November 1935 he met modern pianist Garnet Clark and US trumpeter Bill Coleman. Packaged in 78 rpm style deluxe plain cardboard sleeve.

DJANGO REINHARDT- FROM THE ULTRAPHONE SHELVES LP
(monk, italy)
26.98usd/16.43gbp/18.25eur/2462jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… From December 1934 to late September 1935, the Quintette du Hot Club de France, founded by gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and French violinist Stéphane Grappelli, cut nearly 20 titles for the Parisian based branch of the German Ultraphone label. During the nine months they spent under contract with Ultraphone, their repertoire included some original compositions by members of the band, as well as classic jazz gems. The selections proposed here offer a sample of Django's early genius, who showed the jazz community that the 'American way' of playing jazz was not the only one. Packaged in 78 rpm style deluxe plain cardboard sleeve.

BETTY PADGETT- BETTY PADGETT LP (luv n’ haight, usa)
23.98usd/14.60gbp/16.22eur/2188jpy (approx)

*Betty Padgett was born in Newport, New Jersey and her family moved to Florida when she was in the 6th grade. She sang in her church choir and began to take performing seriously after graduating from high school. While checking out the bubbling local music scene at venues like The Double Decker and Tedie Green, Padgett became particularly keen with the group called Joey Gilmore and the T.C. B. (Taking Care of Business) Express. In 1971 she auditioned with Gilmore and ended up, not only securing the position, but singing with the band for the next 17 years. After a gig at the Elks Club in Ft. Lauderdale, Padgett was approached by soul legend Milton Wright (responsible for the rare groove classics “Keep It Up” and “You Don’t Even Know Me.”) Blown away by her vocal skills and stage presence Wright wasted no time. Within a month she was co-writing and arranging with Wright (check his unmistakable influence on “Gypsy of Love”), Wally Joest, and a cast of musicians she had just met. The entire album was recorded in one evening at Criteria Studios in Miami. Padgett vividly remembers listening to the demo on the drive home from the studio around 3am. It was pouring down rain and she was so excited from having recorded her first record at age 21 that she lost control of her car on the slick streets and nearly crashed! A 12” disco single of “Sugar Daddy” was pressed up in support of the LP and it created quite a buzz (despite her name being misspelled on the cover and labels.) Padgett remembers a local Pepsi Cola TV & radio advert featured the music. The commercial was apparently filmed on the Ft Lauderdale beachfront and included Navy Sailors in uniform that just happened to be docked nearby. Padgett danced up to a vending machine that was parked in the sand, slapped it, and received a glass bottle of soda. After the success of “Sugar Daddy,” Padgett and her band were whisked off to Belize for live dates. After landing at the Belize airport, she was picked up in a taxi and the commercial played on the radio in the cab. While Padgett never quite topped the heights of “Sugar Daddy,” she boasts a great musical resume and continues to perform and record. She has performed and shared the stage with Little Beaver, Gwen & George McCrae, K.C. & The Sunshine Band, Latimore, Jimmy Bo Horne, Jackie Moore, Joe Tex, Denise LaSalle, The Impressions, Bobby Bland, Joe Simon and ZZ Hill.

BETTY PADGETT VS. ARTHUR FOY- SUGAR DADDY 12” (luv n’ haight, usa)

*South Florida has produced some great female singers over the years from Betty Wright to Gloria Estefan. But have you ever heard of Betty Padgett? Despite a relatively successful local career the answer is probably not. You’re even less likely to have seen or heard her hard-to-come-by self-titled debut album. Released in 1975 it includes “Sugar Daddy”, a gem of a track that sounds like it could be a Quantic or Mr Scruff production of late. The album will receive a full-length re-issue later in the year, but fr now this 12” includes both the original vocal version and an extended “Sugar Daddy” dub, previously only available on a super-rare12”. This tune alone would normally set you back a few hundred bucks. And Bettys dynamite soul, over such a tasty percussive mid-tempo groove makes it worth every penny. On the flip-side is an even rarer track by Arthur Foy. Despite coming out of New Orleans “Get Up And Dance” does not sound like your typical Meters, Eddie Bo, etc inspired funk. Instead think deep chocolate soul ala Uno Melodic, Roy Ayers, 80s Ladies, RAMP etc. Down and dirty, and boasting a dance-floor-winning- hook, “Get Up And Dance” is an amazing cosmic soul discovery that came our way via Cool Chris at the Groove Merchant in San Francisco. Copies of the original are rarer than hens teeth and the very few we know about have exchanged hands for $400+.

V/A- GILLES PETERSON DIGS AMERICA VOL. 2 LP (luv n’ haight, usa)
23.98usd/14.60gbp/16.22eur/2188jpy (approx)

*This is the second in the Digs series of compilations and, like Volume I, this album was curated by DJ Gilles Peterson. We’d initially thought Digs would be a series involving different collectors but by popular demand (and because he has more than his fair share of wax) volume two is another collection from the world renowned tastemaker, DJ, and BBC radio host.

EUGENE BLACKNELL- WE CAN'T TAKE LIFE FOR GRANTED 2LP (luv n’ haight, usa)
23.98usd/14.60gbp/16.22eur/2188jpy (approx)

*Oakland guitar ace Eugene Blacknell released multiple singles that ranged in style from raw R&B to power house funk. His musical career stretched from the early 1960s when as a talented and sharp dressed kid, he would become the youngest musician from the Bay Area to play the Apollo in New York, to the end of the 1980s when he died too young.

SHAWN LEE & CLUTCHY HOPKINS- CLUTCH OF THE TIGER 2LP (ubiquity, usa)
23.98usd/14.60gbp/16.22eur/2188jpy (approx)

*Clutch of the Tiger sounds like a collection of film-noir tracks run through the Clutchy Hopkins and Shawn Lee magical music machine. It’s dusty and mysterious junkyard jazz that’s powered by sly beats and other-worldly funk. Famous comic book creator Jim Mahood (who has worked on Spiderman/Marvel, Clerks, Grrl Scouts, Stupid Comics, etc etc) liked the tunes so much he provided the killer artwork for the package! FYI - Inside the album is a hidden code that gives customers a deal on limited edition prints of the Mahfood artwork.

GLOBAL SOUNDS

ARTHUR VEROCAI- ARTHUR VEROCAI LP (luv n’ haight, usa)
26.98usd/16.43gbp/18.25eur/2462jpy (approx)

*In 1972 a repressive Brazilian military dictatorship frowned on artistic impression that might influence the youth of the country. However, producer, arranger and guitar player Arthur Verocai released a self-titled album on Brazilian based Continental Records that challenged the musical conventions of the day. His subtle protest experimented with new musical directions, and used figurative language to sneak under the censorship radar. Luv N'Haight records is honored to release its first full-length Brazilian album. It's super rare and will appeal to fans of the folksy soul and lo-fi electronic experimentations of American artists like Shuggie Otis or the orchestration of producer Charles Stepney. Closest Brazilian comparisons would be to Tim Maia and Jorge Ben. This unique recording has a touch of folk, more than a hint of funk, jazz style soloing, amazing 20 piece string arrangements, blending of electronics and keyboards with organic sounds, and superb soundtrack style music. "I used to listen to Blood Sweat and Tears, Chicago, Stan Kenton, Wes Montgomery, Jimmy Web, Frank Zappa, Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans and Miles Davis, Milton Nascimento, Bossa Nova, among others," explains Arthur Verocai. "In Brazil we had many musical influences, and by that time there wasn't a hegemonic one in the market. In this way my album reflected a search and musical experimentation. I was in an adventurous mood on this album and that led me to explore new melodic, harmonic and rhythmic paths. Verocai arrived at the 1972 album with a number of accomplishments under his belt. He'd produced the Ivan Lins 1971 album "Agora" which was influenced heavily by the sound of North American soul. He had contributed string arrangements to Jorge Ben releases, too. "I also produced two albums by a singer named C?lia for Continental and the president of the company was delighted with the results. He invited me to produce an album using my own compositions and I agreed as long as I was able to choose the musicians to perform with me. All the strings sessions featured 12 violins, 4 violas and 4 cellos, always with one or two percussionists. The idea of mixing strings with contemporary sounds came from my desire of searching for new paths. I think this album was very rich in terms of both quantity and quality of musicians!" Verocai wasn't messing around with his line-up of musicians, which included Brazilian legends like Robertinho Silva, Pascoal Meireles, Luiz Alves, Paulo Moura, Edson Maciel, Oberdan Magalh?es (Banda Black Rio), Nivaldo Ornelas (Milton Nascimento band) and Toninho Horta. Born Arthur Cortes Verocai in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 17/6/1945, he studied music with L?o Soares, Darci Villaverde, Nair Barbosa da Silva, Roberto Menescal and Vilma Gra?a. In 1966 Leny Andrade included his song "Olhando o Mar" ("Looking at the Sea") on her "We Are There" album. Two years later Verocai participated in Musicanossa an event that brought together composers, musicians and singers in presentations to play live in the Santa Rosa Theater in Rio de Janeiro, for which he wrote his first arrangements. The live recording of the event included the songs "Madrugada" and "Nova Manh?", composed in partnership with Paulinho Tapaj?s. By 1968 his main gig was working in Civil Engineering in Rio de Janeiro. He still managed to perform and participate as a composer at many of Brazils famous Festivals of Music. He was working with artists like Paulinho Tapaj?s, Elis Regina, Creuza Maria, the Golden Boys, and Evinha. In 1969 Arthur Verocai began his professional career as musician and arranger. He scored the music for the theater show "Is The Greater", and wrote his first arrangements for orchestra. He arranged records by the Ter?o, Jorge Benjor, Elizeth Cardoso, Gal Costa, Quarteto em Cy, MPB 4, C?lia, Guilherme Lamounier, N?lson Gon?alves, Marcos Valle, and others. His music also appeared in the musical "The Life of Braguinha", alongside Elizeth Cardoso, Quarteto em Cy, MPB4 and Sidney Magal. By 1970 he was writing for other groups and regularly composing music for multiple TV shows and incidental music for TV series. The 1972 self-titled album allowed Verocai to take his interest in instrumental music even further. "I always wanted to compose soundtracks in great style, as in the cinema, but this wasn't possible with television work," he says. "My opportunity came when I was recording this album. I created a rhythmic cell in the acoustic guitar with the harmonic line. I added bass and the non-conventional drums and the percussion with a very smooth orchestration in blocks (four trumpets and a flute) plus the delicate touch of the strings (12 violins, 4 violas and 4 cellos). At the end of the song, Oberdan Magalh?es played and sang with his flute." The resulting track is "S?lvia". "Presente Grego" is perhaps the funkiest track on the album. "This song was influenced by American soul and funk," says Verocai. "By 1972 many of the musicians of my generation were feeling the same influences. Because of our exposure to all many musical influences, we put a distance between us and the conventional recording styles. "Presente Grego" means "Greek gift." It is an expression that comes from the horse of Troy, a gift from the Greeks that hid the warriors that defeated the Troyans. Likewise, the military dictatorship, under the appearance of a good government, practiced censorship and oppression", he explains. In addition to the funky soul elements the album features many solos from artists obviously well schooled in Jazz. Check the soloing in "Pelas Sombras" or "Karina", where saxes blow hard and true against the backdrop of Brazilian rhythms. "My musical preferences go from J.S. Bach and Villa-Lobos, to jazz musicians like Tom Jobim, Milton Nascimento, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Oscar Peterson, Wes Montgomery and Bill Evans," explains Verocai. "I remember Edson Maciel, was invited to a studio session at 9 AM and was to perform a solo on "Karina." He asked us to wait for a while because he wanted to be inspired by some "cacha?a" (a Brazilian liquor made from distilled sugar cane juice). While rehearsing, he asked for a little more "cacha?a" to bring on some more inspiration. This happened twice until he found his inspiration and performed a tremendous solo!" remembers Verocai. In the years after the album release Arthur Verocai became a music advertising executive, creating and producing albums for customers like Brahma, Fanta, Petrobra's, South America, Souza Cruz and was even honored with the Colunistas Prize in Advertising. Since 1983 he is the main proprietor of Studio "V" - House of the Sound and in 2002 he released a solo album "Arthur Verocai - "Saudade Demais" featuring a collection of his work as composer, including some unreleased songs. Arthur Verocai's musical peer Ivan Lins has this to say about his great friend, "Arthur is a very dedicated musician. He has always been. Not only dedicated but very talented also. He made this record years ago just for the fun of it without much publicity. And now will strike back. That's great!"

TRIORGANICO- CONVIVENCIA LP (now again, usa)
18.98usd/11.56gbp/12.84eur/1732jpy (approx)

*A Southern Californian garage-band influenced by music of the Latin American diaspora? Forty years ago that might have described a psych outfit, or an ensemble that emulated Santana. In 2009 it describes a wondrous little combo who have returned to Latin jazz’s raw, minimalist roots and have recorded a self-titled album drenched in history, yet defiantly modern: Convivencia. Triorganico – Pablo Calogero on saxophones and woodwinds, Ricardo “Tiki” Pasillas on percussion and Fabiano do Nascimento on guitar – formed in Calogero’s garage. “We would simply get together to listen to music, write music, share ideas and research music,” the Rio De Janeiro bred do Nascimento states. “We created a musical chemistry… even though we came from very different musical backgrounds, we can understand each others musical language.” The band set up a weekly residency in Downtown LA, playing a variety of original compositions and cover songs from their favorite musicians. Songs by Baden Powell, Hermeto Pascoal, Moacir Santos and other Brasilian legends featured prominently. The idea to record happened, in keeping with the band’s namesake, organically: “It came to us that we could record our music, on our own, easily, using the technologies of today,” do Nascimento laughs. “Anyone can make a record these days right? So we started recording our ideas as a Pablo’s garage, using, as he called it, ‘guerrilla tactics.’” The result is wholesome album that rambles purposefully through the wonders of Brasilian bossa nova influenced jazz and spreads into throughout the musical melting pots at the center of its creator’s multi-cultures. Their album is a warm, acoustic affair that, as a filling entrée amongst glitchy, electronic-based appetizers, feeds the soul.

NEW ARRIVALS AND RESTOCKS THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 17

Photobucket

thanks for looking.

first up, it’s official, friday’s updates are now thursday’s (to coincide with the shops new extended hours on said day) and there’s a bunch of new and restocked records (and cds) you should check out. so much of this weeks haul is ‘top pick’ material, but i had to limit myself to just a few and the new mississippi records compilation lp entitled mata la pena is an easy one (granted, it’s a given anytime i get a box from the folks at mississippi, it’s gonna be a fave, but hey, they deliver); another witch reissue on shadoks (if you grabbed the first one, you know the deal. if you didn’t, then by all means, don’t miss out on this one… great/rare african garage rock!); the unfortunately named, yet totally amazing, psych-funk 101 compilation double lp implies down market james brown/curtis knight/hendrix-isms, but delivers global music circa 1967-1980 so great and beyond categorization that it almost makes the aforementioned title/artists irrelevant (almost)… either way, essential set in the vein of last years obsession compilation on bully records; and last of the top picks (but certainly not least) is france’s dj fabyo’s great set of turkish psych-funk (hah, gottcha!) rarities (and some not so rare if you’ve picking up the erkin koray, baris manco, selda cd/lp reissues over the years… if not, check out the rock section below for a bunch of restocks), it’s a fun listen if there ever was one… sure it’s cdr, but it looks and sounds like a million bucks (and it’s a limited edition of 500)… as mentioned, there’s bunch of great turkish lp/cd restocks (with more expected in the coming weeks) as well as new and restocked titles from domino sound, fallout records, strut, etc… come on by and check ‘em out! as always check the tequila sunrise records facebook page and/or twitter feed for up-to-the-minute new arrivals and restocks.

PICKS OF THE WEEK

V/A- MATA LA PENA: A COMPILATION OF INTERNATIONAL MUSIC LP (mississippi, usa)
13.98usd/8.48gbp/9.50eur/1270jpy (approx)

*another great mississippi compilation of international obscurities, featuring calypso, flamenco, thai ballads, indonesian instrumentals and more. Designed as a sort of sequel to the "I don't feel at home in this world anymore" compilation.

WITCH- INTRODUCTION LP (shadoks music, germany)
47.98usd/29.11gbp/32.60eur/4360jpy (approx)

*Numbered edition of 500, glossy heavy sleeve on 180 gram vinyl. Originally released in Zambia, 1973… Another out-of-nowhere African '70s rock discovery in the Blo mold. Completely unknown band from Zambia, privately pressed on a small local label, this five-piece electric band plays a strong electric African underground style. Tons of wah wah-fuzz guitar in every track, African style beats and vocals and all original songs. After the successful release of the other Witch album Lazy Bones, here is the earlier Introduction. Crazy & wild fuzz guitars all over, African beats and chanting, as good as it gets. Incredible cool and stoned album from the southern African country. Again we need to say: if you're feeling depressed, low, disturbed, out-of-sorts, sad, frustrated or widely demented, then folks, we suggest you seek out a quiet place, indulge in some soothing meditation and cut away that headache by listening to this inspirational album.

V/A- PSYCH-FUNK 101 2LP (world psychedelic funk classics, usa)
19.98usd/12.12gbp/13.58eur/1815jpy (approx)

*Psych-Funk 101 introduces students to the global phenomenon of psychedelic funk music, and covers the “golden years” of the movement, from approximately 1967 until 1980. This compilation does not focus on American and British bands. Rather it focuses on the bands throughout the Global Village that were influenced by the innovation of American and British bands – that many times one upped the heroes they sought to emulate. This compilation focuses on bands influenced by James Brown, The Meters, Sly and The Family Stone, Booker T and The MGs and The Bar Kays and unsung rhythmic forces such as drummers Bernard Purdie, Idris Muhammad, Earl Palmer, bassists such Carol Kaye and Jimmy Lewis. It focuses on bands who took that energy and combined it with the flair of psychedelic-rock musicians such as Jimi Hendrix and the ensemble known as Cream – as well as pop-rock acts taken by the experimental side of psychedelia such as The Beatles. But these bands added their own, unique cultural flourishes. The result is mind-bending. Think about it for a second – what musical forces were greater than that of funk and psychedelic music in the late 60s and early 70s? These forces, combined by bands happy to incorporate folk music and improvisational elements from other musical forms, lead to an amazing body of work still being unearthed by researchers the world over – and still capable of inspiring new investigations into shapes of rhythm.

ROCK AND PSYCHEDELIC

BARIS MANÇO- DÜNDEN BUGÜNE LP (guerssen, spain)
27.98usd/16.97gbp/19.01eur/2542jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Barış Manço was one of the leading, most influential and most beloved Turkish rock musicians, along with Erkin Koray, Edip Akbayram and Cem Karaca, and this is his first long-player, released in 1971 by Sayan Productions. It's a compilation of tracks taken from previously-released 45s, plus the track "Lory" that only appears on this album. Killer psych-rock with a strong Turkish flavor, this features Baris' all-time classics like "Derule" and "Dağlar Dağlar I," as well as the brutal, wah-wah flooded "Küçük Bir Gece Müzigi," with its infectious drumming that drives anyone searching for sampling stuff mad. Not to be confused with two different releases with the same name that actually have different tracklistings and artwork, this is the real album as it was originally released. Reissued on vinyl for the first time, and including an insert with great photos of Barış as well as detailed liner notes.

ERKIN KORAY- 2 LP (nosmokerecords, spain)
32.98usd/20.01gbp/22.41eur/2997jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… First time-ever vinyl reissue of the third album by Turkish psych guru, Erkin Koray. Much more traditional sounding than his other, early to late '70s works, this is also an album that catches you at first listen. There's less guitar than usual here, yes, but it's a splendid set of ethnic Turkish traditional sounds with some occidental feel, with some real killer tracks on it.

CEM KARACA/KARDASLAR- CEM KARACA/KARDAŞLAR LP (turkuola, germany)
32.98usd/20.01gbp/22.41eur/2997jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Limited edition of 500, 150 gram vinyl. The reissue of Cem Karaca's the most sought-after debut LP by legendary label Türküola. It is a compilation of his earlier works with the band Kardaslar and 4 works from his previous band Apaslar. The LP is a very good example of Turkish prog psych rock, features a lot of Turkish melodies, and ethnic string instruments.

ERKIN KORAY- ERKIN KORAY LP (turkuola, germany)
32.98usd/20.01gbp/22.41eur/2997jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… edition of 500 lp's, legal pressing of seminal Turkish rock legend, Erkin Koray. Tracklist: Side A1. Silinmeyen Hatiralar 2. Yalnizlar Rihtimi 3. Öksürük 4. Sevdiğim 5. Hayat Bir Teselli. Side B1. Sanma 2. Ay Bir Tane 3. Ankara Sokaklari (original version) 4. Sevince 5. Gönül Salincağinda (original version). This has essentially the same catalog number as the previous Silinmeyen Hatiralar LP, but is a different album entirely. Classic mid-70s material, but not further info seems to be available.

BARIS MANÇO- BARIS MANÇO LP (turkuola, germany)
32.98usd/20.01gbp/22.41eur/2997jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Limited edition of 300,150 gram vinyl. This LP presents the great works of Manco with the band Kaygisizlar and Les Mistigris from 1962-1972.

BARIS MANÇO- DÜNDEN BUGÜNE LP (turkuola, germany)
32.98usd/20.01gbp/22.41eur/2997jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Limited edition of 500, 180 gram vinyl. Mostly from Baris Manço's first Sayan LP, this compilation presents the great early works of Manço's career.

FIKRET KIZILOK- FIKRET KIZILOK CD (world psychedelia, south korea)
15.98usd/9.69gbp/10.86eur/1452jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… collection of singles by Turkish protest singer much-beloved by young musicians in the underground scene in Tukey, but virtually unknown anywhere else; Fikret started his career playing electric guitar for Cahit Oben Dörtlüsü, which led to appearances in the Golden Microphone song contests that also spotlighted the talents of Erkin Koray, Mogollar and the brothers Hür El; Kizilok frequently collaborated with Bülent Ortaçgil (whose own “Benimle Oynar Misin” album is a lovely artefact of the Turkish scene), and no surprise—it was Fikret’s involvement with prominent folk poets as a result of their shared interest in traditional Anatolian folk music which was the foundation of his storied solo career; the fifteen tracks included here (all from 1970-1974) sport some heavy grooves (‘Leylim, Leylim’, ‘Gözlerinden Bellidir’, ‘Gün Ola Devran Döne’, and the fuzz-guitar heavy ‘Koyverdin Gittin Beni’), but also tantalizes with moody, introspective musings in an Eastern vein (‘Akyin Vari, Akyin’, ‘Haberin Var Mi, and the sitar-laced ‘Köroglu Daglary’. Hard to say more than to say that this is one of the best discs we have heard in a long time. But then we don’t get around as much as most of you. Booklet has notes about the Altin Microphon contests, lyrics, and photos.

ERKIN KORAY- ERKIN KORAY CD (world psychedelia, south korea)
17.98usd/10.91gbp/12.22eur/1634jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Koray’s first album, an absolutely over the top debut album by the Turkish psychedelic guitar guru, which is not only the rarest of all of his albums, but also the rarest Turkish psychedelic album of them all; the record was released in 1973, but is actually culled from Koray’s singles from the previous five years. This wide range of dates (1968-73) encompasses a pretty potent period in music, and makes for great variety; some tracks have a kind of pre-psychedelic vibe, while others have the swirling hashish heaviness of that most elusive thing, a sound that one might deem “pure psychedelia”; in any case, every track has that unique Eastern feel that Koray brings to all his recordings. The end result is definitely on a par of greatness with “Elektronik Turkuler”, which makes this a must have album for any psychedelic head! And as if that wasn’t enough, there are eight incredible bonus cuts from the same period as the album tracks, only ever released as singles, that include some of the most blistering material Koray ever recorded. Wow! Liner notes have plentiful information on Erkin Koray’s early career, as well as lyrics for some songs... alas, only in Turkish.

ERKIN KORAY- 2 CD (world psychedelia, south korea)
17.98usd/10.91gbp/12.22eur/1634jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… advanced fusion of ethnic music and eastern music from Turkish psychedelic master Koray; this is actually his third album (second for the Dogan label), and is the 1976 follow-up to the immensely excellent "Elektronik Turkuler"; the album tracks themselves were recorded (from what we can find out) between 1972-1976, and were first issued as singles; five bonus tracks are great! and come from 1967, 1968, and 1971... as well as an undocumented and very cool acoustic version of 'Yalnizar Rihtimi' from "Elektronik Turkeler"; lyrics and photos in 8-page booklet.

ERKIN KORAY- ELEKTRONIC TURKELER CD (world psychedelia, south korea)
17.98usd/10.91gbp/12.22eur/1634jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… terrific heavy Eastern raves and drones from Turkey's legendary freaked-out psychedelic guitar guru; fantastic sound quality on an album that basically collected some of Koray's best singles tracks up to the date of its original release by Dogan Plakcilik in 1974—the result? some of Koray's most extended tracks. The sound that first emerges as “Elektronik Türküler” begins is that of the plucked strings of the baglama, a sound both sensuous and languid; then comes another undulating rhythm, Koray’s instrumental, ‘Sir” (Secret), with his lead baglama book-ending a stinging psychedelic guitar solo. The mood changes with the next track, ‘Hele Yar’, an acoustic re-arrangement of a Turkish ballad from the 17th Century; here, twin baglamas construct a dance rhythm behind lilting bass and scant drums. Side two of the original LP opens with the acoustic guitar-led love ballad, ‘Cemalim’ (My Cemal); this well known Anatolian folk number is well handled here with Koray’s stridently strummed acoustic guitar battling throughout against overdubbed electric guitar—background vocals waft softly in the background, echoing Koray’s hypnotic repetition of the title, accompanied by highly controlled fuzz guitar filigrees. The last track is the nine-minute odyssey that is ‘Türkü’ (Ballad): the swirling kalem, that Turkish double-reed wind instrument of snake charming tendencies, weaves a truly psychedelic arabesque against a foundation of solid bass and drums; the voice of Koray emerges from the shadows drenched in reverb, slowly reciting words of great import, intoned over and over again as if in consecration of a ceremonial rite; the pace quickens to a Dervish whirl, until a smash of glass breaks the tension... and we begin again, with Koray’s guitar and trance-like recitation carrying us further and further back into time, each word fading farther and farther into ancestral echo-land where east is west and west is east... and we are all together. A densely textured psychedelic masterpiece... mesmerizing.

3 HÜR-EL- 3 HÜR-EL CD (world psychedelia, south korea)
17.98usd/10.91gbp/12.22eur/1634jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Their first LP, another masterpiece of Turkish psychedelic delight, culled from singles by the three very talented Hur El brothers, and released in 1972 in small quantities on Diskotur (originals sell for $1000 and up nowadays); some of the very best Turkish psych songs -- less Western in some ways than their great Arsivi LP, but still with the same excellent guitar, impassioned vocals and Eastern percussion that makes for memorable listening and a long-term connection with the music; a triumph that belongs in every record collection.

*shop favorite restocked… Previously reissued on cd by Fallout, now issued on deluxe lp format as well; 180 gram pressing. This beautiful collection of Canadian psych-folk swiftly came and went in 1971, but has since acquired a devoted cult following. A haunting set of self-penned tunes set to esoteric arrangements featuring gloriously unpredictable fiddle-playing, it is sure to delight fans of The Incredible String Band and the Holy Modal Rounders.

FRIAR TUCK- AND HIS PSYCHEDELIC GUITAR LP (fallout, uk)
24.98usd/15.15gbp/16.97eur/2270jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… An oft-overlooked piece of the L.A. pop-psych jigsaw, this 1967 oddity combines typically complex vocal arrangements by the legendary Curt Boettcher with virtuoso guitar interludes from L.A. session legend Mike Deasy, and features backing from the team responsible for the landmark Millennium and Sagittarius LPs. A truly deranged mixture of cover versions and originals, it's presented here complete with four ultra-rare bonus tracks from non-album 45s, making it an essential purchase for fans of sunshine pop and psychedelia.

KANGAROO- KANGAROO CD (fallout, uk)
17.98usd/10.91gbp/12.22eur/1634jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… This quirky collection of country-tinged pop-psych from New York City first appeared in 1968, and features the talents of singer Barbara Keith (whose songs have been covered by Barbara Streisand, Delaney & Bonnie, Lowell George and others), John Hall (of '70s hitmakers Orleans) and ND Smart (a member of Mountain and the legendary Great Speckled Bird, who went on to play with Gram Parsons). The band was short-lived, but they opened for acts such as The Doors and The Who, and their sole album makes its long-overdue CD debut here, complete with explanatory liner notes.

PAT KILROY- LIGHT OF DAY LP (fallout, uk)
24.98usd/15.15gbp/16.97eur/2270jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… This highly original 1966 collection, originally released by Elektra Records, has been called the first acid folk record of all time. Certainly its hippy themes and exotic instrumentation are well ahead of their time, but Kilroy died tragically young and his album has largely been neglected ever since, despite featuring legendary guitarist Stefan Grossman. A must for all fans of psychedelic singer-songwriters.

MICHAELANGELO- ONE VOICE MANY CD (fallout, uk)
17.98usd/10.91gbp/12.22eur/1634jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… This lost classic finally makes its CD debut here. Led by the aptly named Angel, the band only recorded one album, which has become one of the best-loved folk-rock albums of its era. Recorded in New York and produced by longtime Wendy Carlos collaborator Rachel Elkind, it's a haunting collection of autoharp-led pop songs, boasting strong melodies and powerful electric guitar, but sold poorly on release in 1971, causing the band to splinter.

MICHELE- SATURN RINGS CD (fallout, uk)
17.98usd/10.91gbp/12.22eur/1634jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Michele O'Malley's sole album is an unfairly neglected West Coast folk-psych gem. Featuring the involvement of cult legends such as Curt Boettcher (Sagittarius, Millennium), Lowell George (Little Feat) and Elliott Ingber (Mothers of Invention, Captain Beefheart), it's a dreamy collection of Eastern-influenced West Coast folk/jazz-pop matched with Michele's lilting vocals that deserved to sell much better upon its original release in 1969.

REBECCA AND THE SUNNYBROOK FARMERS- BIRTH CD (fallout, uk)
17.98usd/10.91gbp/12.22eur/1634jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… This eclectic blend of folk, pop, jazz and acid rock originally appeared in the U.S. in 1969 on the Musicor label, and now it makes its long-overdue CD debut here. Boasting no less than three female singers in its lineup, the band played ballads, pop songs and freaky psychedelic rock, set to complex arrangements incorporating electric guitar, violin and sitar. Despite gigging with acts such as The Lemon Pipers, Jethro Tull, Alice Cooper, and Blood, Sweat and Tears, they didn't break through, leaving behind only this neglected gem.

WILKINSON TRI-CYCLE- WILKINSON TRI-CYCLE CD (fallout, uk)
17.98usd/10.91gbp/12.22eur/1634jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… This obscure power trio is thought to have come from Boston, where they supported The Velvet Underground in 1969, the same year their sole LP appeared. An inspired blend of tough electric blues ("Leavin' Trunk," "Antique Locomotives"), commercial songs with distinctive hooks ("What Of I?," "Pourscha Poe") and more overtly acid-influenced material ("David's Rush," "Yellow Wall"), it's an overlooked psychedelic gem that deserves far wider recognition.

THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS- THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS CD (fallout, uk)
17.98usd/10.91gbp/12.22eur/1634jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… This band of New York hippies is best-known for featuring the debut of Blondie's Debbie Harry. Their sole album originally appeared in 1968 on Capitol Records. A dreamy collection of psychedelic folk-pop that perfectly captures the innocence and whimsy of the 1960s flower-power dream, it's an obligatory purchase for lovers of The Mamas and the Papas or sunshine pop in general, and is presented here complete with explanatory liner notes.

FUNK AND SOUL

V/A- SCHOOL ME! VOLUME ONE 1968-1975: HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGIATE JAZZ, FUNK, SOUL AND PSYCHEDELIA 2LP (stage band research, usa)
19.98usd/12.12gbp/13.58eur/1815jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… School Me! – the first release on the newly formed Stage Band Research label – compiles the best funk, jazz, pyschedelia (and a healthy combination of the three!) that America’s high school stage band and university lab bands and jazz ensembles have to offer. Following in the footsteps of Cali-Tex’s School House Funk volumes and Now-Again Records proper exhumation of the legendary Houston, Texas-based Kashmere Stage Band’s nigh-perfect repertoire, here’s a compilation that gives a great cross section of the stage band and jazz ensemble movement in America. A movement meant to educate children and hone their musical talents. A movement that, sadly, has all but disappeared. Here, there’s white bands, black bands, mixed bands... bands from well endowed universities and those from impoverished, overlooked high schools... bands from the sticks and those from the bricks... Bands who obviously worshipped James Brown and those who were inspired by Cream. The label’s focussed on the era between 1968 and 1975 for this compilation. But this is only the beginning. Let’s hope it doesn’t take them a decade to find enough to make it to volume two!

GLOBAL SOUNDS

V/A- A ORILLAS DEL MAGDALENA: COASTAL CUMBIAS FROM COLOMBIA'S DISCOS FUENTES LP (domino sound, usa)
12.98usd/7.87gbp/8.82eur/1179jpy (approx)

*Call and response wailing, percussionists that play a measure then disappear, backwards accordions and a persistent, loping bassline comprise some of the elements that make up the Cumbia. Born on the banks of the Magdalena River in coastal Colombia, this infectious music represents a marriage of African, Spanish, and Indigenous influences. Antonio Fuentes began recording Colombia's music in 1934, founding his country's first record label, Discos Fuentes. These 12 gems -- released between the mid 1950s and the mid '70s -- are lovingly selected from the Discos Fuentes catalogue. Includes tracks by Andres Landero, Los Corraleros de Majagual, Los Guacharacos, and Nafer Duran amongst others. This release comes in a tip-on sleeve.

MULATU ASTATKE WITH THE HELIOCENTRICS- INSPIRATION INFORMATION 3 2LP (strut, germany)
23.98usd/14.55gbp/16.29eur/2179jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… The third in Strut’s Inspiration Information studio collaboration series brings together an intriguing pairing between one of Africa’s great bandleaders, Mulatu Astatke, with the next level musicianship of The Heliocentrics collective from the mighty roster of Stones Throw / Now Again. Known primarily through the successful ‘Ethiopiques’ album series and the film soundtrack to Jim Jarmusch’s ‘Broken Flowers’, Mulatu Astatke is one of Ethiopia’s foremost musical ambassadors. Informed by spells living and studying in the UK and the USA, his self-styled Ethio-jazz sound flourished during the “Swinging Addis” era of the late ‘60s as he successfully fused Western jazz and funk with traditional Ethiopian folk melodies, five tone scale arrangements and elements from music of the ancient Coptic church. The Heliocentrics have become known as one of the UK’s foremost free-thinking collectives of musicians, inspired by a wide palette covering Sun Ra, James Brown, David Axelrod and all manner of psych, Afro and Eastern sounds. Now a fixture within the Stones Throw / Now Again roster, they forged their own genre-breaking directions in the astral analogue groove on their 2007 debut album, ‘Out There’. The recording liaison took place thanks to some inspired programming by Karen P for her ‘Broad Casting’ session at Cargo in London on 17th April 2008. Securing Mulatu for his first UK live date in over 15 years, she called on The Heliocentrics to back the maestro and, with only a day of rehearsal, they tore the place up with a series of original Mulatu classics, chalking up one of the most memorable gigs of the year. The show itself was recorded for Red Bull Music Academy Radio (Mulatu has been involved with the Academy for some time) and is still available to listen to on-demand at www.rbmaradio.com A Gilles Peterson Maida Vale session followed for BBC Radio One. The new recording is a mouth-watering prospect. Driven by groove and melody ideas exchanged upfront of the sessions, the bulk of the album was laid down at Quatermass studios, an analogue HQ in East London during 8th to 14th September 2008, a week of frenetic writing and recording. Alongside Mulatu, London-based Ethiopian musicians including Dawit Gebreab, Yezina Nagash, Mesafnit Nagash and Temesgen Taraken guested on several tracks, contributing traditional sounds using instruments like the krar (a six-stringed, five tone instrument), washint (a flute traditionally made from bamboo) and Begena (a ten string instrument dating back to the 15th century, sometimes referred to as “David’s Harp”). Joel Yennior from Boston’s Either Orchestra scored and arranged the horn lines on the fly and the Heliocentrics overdubbed and arranged each track following the main recording period, adding the individual production touches to each piece of music. The result is a true fusion of styles. At times the feel is reminiscent of Mulatu’s earlier recordings, at others The Heliocentrics sound cuts through with Mulatu bringing his haunting vibes lines into more experimental territory as the band whip up their own fresh Ethio-hybrid.

V/A- BLACK RIO VOL. 2: ORIGINAL SAMBA SOUL 1971-1980 2LP (strut, germany)
25.98usd/15.76gbp/17.65eur/2361jpy (approx)

*Back in 2002, Strut released ‘Black Rio’ compiled by London DJ Cliffy, a snapshot of the ‘70s Black Rio soul and funk movement in Brazil. In June, Strut release the second volume in the series, delving deeper into the vaults to sample some of the lesser known gems emerging from the Carnival capital during the era. Whilst Tropicalia had given Brazil’s musicians and songwriters a powerful political voice during the ‘60s, the Black Rio movement had to battle the odds – black soul was perceived as not being authentically Brazilian and the country was under the rule of General Emilio Garrastazu Medici’s oppressive dictatorship which effectively suffocated cultural expression between 1969 and 1974. Still, the movement took hold as disenchanted black Brazilian youth mirrored the struggles of their contemporaries in the US with their own potent brew of samba, soul and funk. Black Rio parties attracted thousands, bands including Banda Black Rio and Uniao Black were created from the scene and music figureheads like Jorge Ben began exploring more dense, Afro directions on albums including ‘Africa Brasil’. While Black Rio Vol. 1 brought together pioneers of the movement like Tim Maia and Gerson King Combo, Volume 2 digs deeper still, exploring more of the key artists and many of the short-lived bands and smaller labels of the time. Highlights include the dynamite funk / samba jam ‘Faz Tanta Tempo’ by Renata Lu, a great funky cover of Gilberto Gil’s ‘Bananeira’ by Emilio Santiago and a rare slice of breezy soul, ‘Supermarket’, by Pete Dunaway aka Paulistano, one of a group of artists giving themselves a Western-sounding name at the time.

V/A- CALYPSOUL 70: CARIBBEAN SOUL & CALYPSO CROSSOVER 1969-1979 CD (strut, germany)
19.98usd/12.12gbp/13.58eur/1815jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Strut turns its magnifying glass onto the Carribean for Calypsoul 70, a celebration of the magnificent array of crossover calypso, reggae, Latin, Afro, and soul styles that emerged, often from small studio and label stables, during the '70s. Taking the listener on a non-stop island-hop, the albums digs deep into Trinidad's steel pan and marching band archives with a terrific pan cover of Gwen McCrae's '90% Of Me Is You,' alongside tough social commentary by 'rapso' pioneer, Lancelot Layne. It features a sprinkling of Latin dynamite from Martinique legend Marius Cultier and Cuban salsa heroes Los Van Van and touches on island links with Africa courtesy of Eze Rockcliffe's Yoruba Singers (Guyana) and an Afrobeat-inspired plea for freedom from legendary calypsonian, Duke. To finish, it adds in a strong helping of fascinating soul and disco fusions from short-lived island bands like Magic Circle Express (St. Lucia), The Vibrations (Virgin Gorda) and Ophelia (Dominica). As well as a valuable selection for diggers, the album is designed as an ultra-handy package for DJs with a host of playable tracks and rare cover versions. All in all, the perfect funky tropical summer soundtrack for the beach, club or BBQ.

V/A- FUNKY NASSAU: COMPASS POINT STORY 1980-1986 CD (strut, germany)
18.98usd/11.51gbp/12.90eur/1724jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… It is a sound which defined an era and became the very essence of Island Records. During the '80s, Compass Point Studios in The Bahamas, set up by Island MD Chris Blackwell, was a magnet for soul, reggae, punk and rock artists eager to inject their sound with some Nassau magic. And the magic, apart from the tropical sunshine, was the production genius of reggae legends Sly & Robbie, engineers Steven Stanley and Alex Sadkin, and the Compass Point All-Stars house band. Most people would recognize the sound from hits by Grace Jones or Tom Tom Club, an unmistakable fusion of great, often quirky songwriting, dub production techniques and low end funk, extended into spacious and unhurried 12" versions. This was vibe music which has remained timeless on dancefloors ever since. For the first time, Strut presents the story of Compass Point from 1980 to 1986 bringing together acknowledged classics by artists whose sound was indelibly shaped there including Grace Jones, Black Uhuru and Gwen Guthrie. The album also highlights selected lesser known tracks by French DJ Guy Cuevas, Slits-offshoot band Set The Tone and the queen of trash disco, Cristina. Funky Nassau comes packaged in a deluxe digipak with full booklet featuring extensive sleeve notes and artist interviews by David Katz, author of the official Lee Perry biography, People Funny Boy alongside rare photos by Adrian Boot, Lynn Goldsmith and Alison Jarvis.

HOUSE, TECHNO AND DISCO

KID CREOLE- GOING PLACES: THE AUGUST DARNELL YEARS 1976-1983 CD (strut, germany)
18.98usd/11.51gbp/12.90eur/1724jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Strut Records, with seminal compilations such as Disco Not Disco, has established itself as one of the premier sources for vintage post-punk, no wave, and genre-bending dance music of all sorts. With Going Places, the aficionados at Strut take a look at one of the archetypical producers behind this burgeoning sound, shedding light on the career of a man more familiar to many for his work in the spotlight than behind the boards. During the '80s, Kid Creole was the zoot-suited Tropical Gangster, a Latino Cab Calloway mixing pop, funk, big band swing and Latin rhythms for a series of global chart smashes, from 'Stool Pidgeon' and 'Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy' to 'Endicott.' Before taking on the Kid Creole persona however, August Darnell developed his feel for jagged dance rhythms and musical fusion through a series of projects as a prolific writer, musician and producer. Darnell began his career as key member of Dr. Buzzard's Savannah Band (of late a staple of hip-hop sampling at the hands of Ghostface and others) alongside his brother, Stony Browder Jr. In 1974, Darnell then masterminded Machine's disco anthem 'There But For The Grace Of God' before becoming the in-house producer for the extremely influential Ze Records in New York. There, he helped fashion the grungy Ze sound through Cristina's trash disco debut album and groundbreaking work for Aural Exciters, James Chance and more. With today's DJs consistently championing Darnell's early work, this exclusive Strut release covers the period from 1974 to 1983 and features rare extended versions and album tracks released on CD for the first time. The set compiled by DJ Guido of Paris DJs with extended sleeve notes by legendary New York journalist Brian Chin.

V/A- HORSE MEAT DISCO 2LP (strut, germany)
25.98usd/15.76gbp/17.65eur/2361jpy (approx)

*Following the label’s acclaimed ‘Disco Not Disco’ and ‘Disco Italia’ releases during 2008-9, Strut teams up with one of London’s leading disco collectives, Horse Meat Disco, for their hotly anticipated debut compilation release. Inspired by the halcyon days of New York nightlife including Mancuso’s Loft, Nicky Siano’s Gallery and late lamented DJ Adam Goldstone, Horse Meat Disco was started in 2003 by DJs James Hillard (ex-Nuphonic) and Jim Stanton, long-time lynchpin of Jockey Slut magazine. From early parties in London’s Chinatown, Horse Meat took up their famed weekly residency in Eagle London in Vauxhall and, joined by DJs Filthy Luka (Luke Howard, ex- Queer Nation) and Severino (CODEX), quickly built a reputation for fantastic parties and high quality disco sets. Horse Meat Disco has since attracted a discerning mix of old time disco heads, club kids, bears and naturists and has become renowned as a space where heterosexual disco fans can party at a gay disco club without feeling out of place. The club's open-minded ethos has secured them bookings worldwide with international crowds keen to sample the Horse Meat Disco party energy. Over the last two years, Horse Meat highlights include their NYC Downlow parties which took The Glastonbury Festival and Lovebox Weekender by storm. At both festivals, HMD created a full film set, a backstreet New York scene featuring an alley filled with trannies, hookers and leather boys alongside the best music and performances by the cream of London’s alternative gay performers. HMD's reputation for creating one of the most unique and underground parties around was cemented.

V/A- ZE RECORDS STORY 1979-2009 2LP (strut, germany)
25.98usd/15.76gbp/17.65eur/2361jpy (approx)

* Strut present the story of one of the most influential and revered labels emerging from New York in the late ‘70s and ‘80s, Ze Records. After the late ‘70s punk and new wave explosion in New York, Ze became a by-word for the anything-goes culture clashes that typified the Big Apple during the early ‘80s. Formed by French art student Michel Esteban and British journalist Michael Zilkha, Ze quickly created its own unique independent universe, signing artists as varied as Alan Vega’s electronic post-punk pioneers Suicide, trash disco queen Cristina and maverick producer August Darnell a.k.a. Kid Creole. With Esteban’s sharp graphic eye leading the label’s visual identity, Ze hit the New York zeitgeist head on and became supremely hip – in 1982, The Face magazine nominated it “the most fashionable label in the world.” The label’s early success led to a deal with Chris Blackwell’s Island Records, which gave Ze’s releases worldwide exposure and brought worldwide fame to Kid Creole, Was (Not Was) and more. Over thirty years on and Ze remains one of the great cult labels of its time. With this new compilation, Strut takes a snapshot of the many weird and wonderful fusions that surfaced on its famous NYC cab-influenced yellow and black label. Highlights include one of the earliest outings by Was (Not Was), ‘Tell Me That I’m Dreaming’, a disbelieving commentary on Reagan-omics, Bob Blank’s short-lived disco supergroup Aural Exciters and a Larry Levan mix of Kid Creole’s biting parable about corruption in the Caribbean, ‘There’s Something Wrong In Paradise’. Other featured artists include Ze label regulars Cristina, Bill Laswell’s Material, kookie French experimentalist Lizzy Mercier Descloux, and camp disco-electro icons, Les Garcons.

PICKS OF THE WEEK

BROWN RECLUSE SINGS- THE SOFT SKIN 12”EP (slumberland, usa)
9.98usd/6.01gbp/6.86eur/918jpy (approx)

*brown recluse’s debut vinyl ep (after a superb self released cdep entitled black sunday -circa 2006-2007) finally see’s the light of day (fwiw, this was originally intended to be released via tequila sunrise, but what can i say, the money was not there, so slumberland expressed interest and from all perspectives, it was a wise move. keep your eyes/ears peeled for the forthcoming full length)… Formed in 2006, Brown Recluse take influences from the psych pop of The Zombies and Margo Guryan, the tropicalia of Os Mutantes, and 60s producers like Curt Boettcher, Joe Meek and Phil Spector, and create something very modern. Their debut EP Black Sunday was a brilliant blast of pop invention; it's blend of blinding songcraft, skilled arrangements and gorgeous playing is an absolute joy and made Brown Recluse one of our favorite new bands. The Soft Skin was recorded in mid-2007; after some delays with the original release, we're very excited to be able to bring it you on Slumberland Records. The four songs show an increasingly confident full-band line-up stretching out and reaching a new plateau. A pastoral, psychedelic vibe permeates the EP, bringing to mind the sunshine pop of Curt Boettcher's The Millennium/Sagittarius projects, and such familiar touchstones as Brian Wilson, Belle & Sebastian, The Clientele and the Elephant 6 collective.

ROCK AND PSYCHEDELIC

V/A- FAIRYTALES CAN COME TRUE: UK POPSIKE FROM THE LATE 60'S 2LP
(psychic circle, uk)
34.98usd/21.06gbp/24.04eur/3219jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… 180 gram pressing. Twenty previously-uncomped tracks of enchanting UK pop-psych, compiled by legendary psych musician and Psychic Circle label-head, Nick Saloman (The Bevis Frond). You'll find the pre-Fairport Iain Matthews, the only single from Jackie Lomax's Lomax Alliance, Gallagher & Lyle's unique response to Pet Sounds & a Troggs-like gem from P.J. Proby's hairdresser! Compilers and collectors alike know that there was some wonderful music coming out of the UK in the late '60s and it wasn't all-out psychedelia or floor-filling blue-eyed soul. Sure, all these tracks have a psychy feel, and some of them would pack a dancefloor, but really they're more concerned with harmony and pop sensibility. These are dazzling tracks, all very melodic and very refreshing.

V/A- ALPHABEAT: POP, PSYCH & PROG ROCK 1967-1970 LP (top sounds, uk)
29.98usd/18.05gbp/20.60eur/2759jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Contains an 11-page lavishly illustrated magazine-style booklet, and housed in authentic '60s fashion with a laminated sleeve... Compiled and realized by Nigel Lees (author of much of Record Collector magazine's long running series 'The British Psychedelic Trip'), Alphabeat marks the debut release on his own label Top Sounds, a collection which brings together 13 rare slices of pop, psychedelia and progressive rock recorded during 1967-1970. Only 2 have appeared previously on compilations, the remainder bar the obscure 1970 45 by Mississippi have never been released and make their vinyl and CD debut on Alphabeat. All tracks have been professionally restored and the release includes an informative and profusely illustrated 24-page booklet which features histories of all the artists, together with many photos which have never been published before. The release has the blessing of at least one member of each group and in some cases several. Many of the selections on Alphabeat were not even known to exist before the release of the compilation, and few connoisseurs of obscure late '60s pop, psych and prog will be disappointed with its contents. Dubbed from a master supplied by a Belgian television company, 'Foxy Lady' and 'Toad' were recorded live at a pop festival in 1968 and prove The Barrier to be as exciting on stage as on their best singles from the same year, while Mississippi impress with their heavy bluesy rock which is lifted from their lone and very rare 45 from 1970. The pigeonholing of Breakthru as a lightweight pop act through their only single 'Ice Cream Tree' is devastatingly dismissed by the unveiling of 2 incendiary slices of psychedelically-inclined rock recorded at a Birmingham studio in late 1967, and an unknown group who recorded at R.G Jones' OAK studios sound uncannily like The Game 3 years on with the slow burning 'First Back From Heaven.' The Pathfinders' 'Pumpkin Lantern' has appeared before on compilations on a number of occasions, but thanks to the discovery of another acetate copy, it's presented here in premium quality together for the first time with its previously ignored but very special rendering of the Bee Gees' 'To Love Somebody.' Graded Grains have presented psych collectors with a mystery and an enigma since their acetate of 'Animal Magic' and ' Lucifer Sam' was unearthed for Chocolate Soup For Diabetics Volume 3 way back in the early '80s, and such was their dogged obscurity that some came to believe there was no such band called Graded Grains at all. Top Sounds however, are able to present 4 tracks recorded on the continent in Paris in 1969 which beautifully exhibit authentic pop psych with a marked Barrett-era Pink Floyd influence, one of which is a later (and much cleaner!) take of the famed 'Animal Magic.' And last but by no means least, the legendary blues band Black Cat Bones prove their versatility and deliver an uptempo psych-flavored rocker called 'Warmth Of The Day,' which aside from inclusion on a fairly recent bootleg has only previously been available on the rare 1969 promotional for the QE2 ocean liner.

V/A- SHAPES & SOUNDS: ORANGE & RED BEAMS FROM THE BBC ARCHIVES LP (top sounds, uk)
34.98usd/21.06gbp/24.04eur/3219jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Including a 16-page color booklet based on a vintage Radio Times… Following on from Alphabeat, Top Sounds is proud to announce the release of a second compilation, a delightful selection of choice '60s rarities from the otherwise largely inaccessible BBC archives. Spanning a period of almost two years, Shapes & Sounds offers 17 performances taped in BBC studios for broadcast not only on the more familiar radio shows such as Top Gear and Saturday Club, but also some of the daytime weekly programs such as The Dave Cash Programme. This release features six bands, all of whom will be familiar to collectors of psychedelia and pop of the period, some of which are lauded as being amongst the most rated groups of their time. For many, pride of place will go to Kaleidoscope, as Shapes & Sounds features two tracks that are missing from the BBC's Transcription Service archive and consequently were not included on the Please Listen To The Pictures BBC set. Thanks to the recent discovery of a transcription disc, Top Sounds are privileged to complete the jigsaw and offer a choice version of the band's most contagious single 'Jenny Artichoke,' as well as a stupendous rendition of the Faintly Blowing cut 'Music' which is guaranteed to have Kaleidoscope's legion of followers in ecstasy! Also thought lost and making their debut on are three splendid tracks by Tomorrow featuring Keith West, sourced from two editions of Top Gear in October 1967 and February 1968. Included are excellent renditions of 'Blow Up' and 'Colonel Brown,' but the pick of the bunch is almost certainly 'Real Life Permanent Dream,' with its overdrive of twisting wah-wah guitar throughout from the nimble fingers of Steve Howe. It's been a while since any fresh music from Timebox was released and Shapes & Sounds offers their four remaining session tracks from the Beeb archives, which include a beautiful version of their famed 'Beggin,' a rendition of 'Yellow Van' which most definitely puts the single cut to shame, a superb take of 'Stay There' and perhaps most importantly, an admirable slice of blue-eyed soul in their cover of the Young Rascals' 'A Girl Like You,' which the band never recorded outside of the BBC. The Montanas' discography is noted by many as being rather hit or miss, but that is most definitely not the case with their inclusion on Shapes & Sounds, and most will no doubt be surprised and animated by the BBC take of their most prized pop/psych 45, A Step In The Right Direction. That excellent single was enhanced by a wash of phasing, but in this live performance the song is literally drowned in a veritable tidal wave of that glorious wind tunnel effect, while 'You're Never Going to Get My Lovin' would have made a better choice for a single than some of those that were actually released. The other Montanas performances form something of a Moby Grape tribute, with a cracking rendering of 'Hey Grandma' and a blistering attack on 'Omaha.' Of all these numbers from their repertoire, only 'A Step In The Right Direction' ever appeared on a single. Oxfordshire's Gentle Influence have come to more prominence recently with the inclusion of their popular 'Easy To Know' on the 'Le Beat Bespoke' compilation and Top Sounds have uncovered a similarly styled nugget with their BBC only cover of Curtis Mayfield's 'You've Been Cheatin',' as well as a superior version of their final 1969 A-side 'Always Be A Part Of My Living.' And last but my no means least, The Spectrum -- hitherto not the most rated of '60s bands by some -- impress with a fuzz guitar-spiked performance of 'Headin' For A Heatwave' which is more virile and much more atmospheric than the 45 version, and they enthusiastically rip through a Beeb only take of The Artwoods favorite 'I Take What I Want.' The sound quality is absolutely superb throughout, with nearly every track sourced from original BBC Transcription records. The Tomorrow performances have been taken from excellent off-air recordings and similarly shine and few of the tracks on the collection needed much enhancement at all, all have nevertheless been professionally restored and mastered. The presentation is immaculate and as with the Alphabeat release, Artholeghraphics have designed a memorable period-flavored package. Includes a 24-page booklet packed with illustrations, band histories and listings of all their known BBC sessions written and supplied by Nigel Lees, author of much of Record Collector magazine's 'The British Psychedelic Trip' series. Except for one of the Montanas recordings being bootlegged many years ago, none of the tracks have ever been commercially available and most have not been heard in public since the '60s. All copies are hand numbered and Shapes & Sounds is a legitimate limited edition release, licensed from the BBC with the blessing/co-operation of no less than 19 band members.

V/A- SHAPES AND SOUNDS VOLUME TWO: SHADES OF DEEPEST PURPLE FROM THE BBC ARCHIVES 1967-1971 LP (top sounds, uk)
34.98usd/21.06gbp/24.04eur/3219jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… With this second excavation of previously unreleased live BBC session performances spanning the period 1967-1971, Shapes And Sounds becomes a series and Volume Two features a completely different line up of bands from last year's set. Pride of place on this second edition arguably goes to The Gun, with three astonishing performances that were recorded nearly a year before 'Race With The Devil' which illustrate their late '67 menu of mod and psych pop, with cracking versions of Rupert's Peoples 'Hold On,' Paul Simons 'A Most Peculiar Man' and a quite splendid airing of their legendary 'Light On The Wall!' The Casuals surprise with the beat of 'Midnight Confessions' and 'Take Me For A Little While' as well as a fine rendering of 'Jesamine,' while The Mirage perform a live version of their May 1967 single 'The Wedding Of Ramona Blair.' The Alan Bown! play an excellent take of 'Magic Handkerchief' and even more interestingly offer two numbers that never appeared on any Bown release, with the self-penned progressive popper 'Movie Star Baby' and a brilliant interpretation of The Association's 'Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies.' Also with three tracks on Shapes And Sounds are Wales' The Bystanders, who turn in a lovely version of 'Royal Blue Summer Sunshine Day' as well as a glorious homage to The Byrds with 'Renaissance Fair.' Even better and long talked about in collectors' circles but never previously released is their absolutely stunning rendition of 'I Am The Walrus,' which Top Sounds are sure will disappoint no one! Sourced from an off-air recording of their only British television appearance on Disco 2, Killing Floor perform 'Milkman' from their Out Of Uranus LP in superb quality (the TV show was wiped decades ago) and of similarly heinous rarity are live tracks from Portrait and Katch 22, who turn in forceful renderings of 'Born To Be Wild' and 'The Price Of Love,' respectively (the latter of which is better than the Status Quo cover!) The sound quality is absolutely superb throughout, with 12 of the 16 tracks sourced from original BBC Transcription records. The other performances have been taken from excellent off-air recordings and similarly shine and though few of the tracks on the collection needed much enhancement at all, all have nevertheless been professionally restored and mastered. The presentation is immaculate and as with the previous Shapes And Sounds release, Artholeghraphics have designed a memorable period flavored package. The LP has a 16 page color booklet based on a vintage Radio Times packed with illustrations, band histories and listings of all their known BBC sessions written and supplied by Nigel Lees, author of much of Record Collector magazine's 'The British Psychedelic Trip' series. Except for the Mirage recording being bootlegged many years ago (in lesser quality!), none of the tracks have ever been commercially available and most have not been heard in public since the '60s. Shapes And Sounds is a legitimate limited edition release, licensed from the BBC with the blessing and co-operation of many band members.

Their sole album In Wonderland was originally released on Nimbus 9 in 1968. In Wonderland is an obscured pop-psych masterpiece from Canada, this recording were presented jointly by the legendary Canadian independent label Nimbus 9 Productions and the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) at that time. The Mutual Understanding combines the musical talents of the great Canadian musicians; Ben McPeek, Jimmy Dale and Jerry Toth, with the clever and innovative vocal stylings of Canada's top vocal group, the Laurie Bower Singers. The album captures a unique post psychedelic musical moment in time that enchants with its own flavor.

THE TOKENS- INTERCOURSE CD (beatball, south korea)
21.98usd/13.24gbp/15.11eur/2022jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… This is a CD of the legendary vocal rock group The Tokens called Intercourse. We guess that says it all. What we have here is the great lost Tokens album, recorded in 1968 and promptly turned down by WB. To fill a contractual obligation, just 200 copies were pressed up and the album pretty much remained an interesting catalog sighting before its reissue. What we also have here is a white doo-wop group delivering an album that falls somewhere between Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper. Everything on here works in a very organic manner: all of the songs follow a neat continuum and could easily be termed as a humanistic song cycle, each one surrounded by late-'60s Beatlesque production values, right down to the massively compressed drum sounds and omnipresent tape saturation. Trippy, loopy and totally of its time, classic doo-wop this is not; great, however, it is. This CD issue contains remastered original mono mix album plus never released stereo mix version which were founded out from their attic. Total 31 trax in.

LUIE LUIE- TOUCHY CD (companion, usa)
16.98usd/10.22gbp/11.67eur/1562jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Some years ago, a Los Angeles area collector stumbled across an orphaned copy of Touchy in a thrift store. It was shared through tape trading networks and bootlegged on vinyl -- now, Companion Records is proudly offering this first official Touchy CD release. Luie Luie has to be the most jaw-dropping one-man band lounge act found to date. Touchy serves as a conceptual dance album, an experimental album, as well as a sort of healing LP for '60s burn-outs. What can his music be compared to? Nothing that we know of. Luis Johnston is a Southern California screenwriter, painter, and musician who's spent the past 30 years working in almost complete obscurity. But he's also written and starred in a feature film and shaken hands with Elvis Presley. Luie has been playing live at various restaurants, lounges, and country clubs for three decades and is still going strong. He released a handful of 45s in the '70s and one full-length LP, Touchy in 1974. And he continues to record unknown quantities of yet-to-be-released CDs. This deluxe CD version is housed in a digipak sleeve, includes 2 'Touchy buttons,' a 20-page booklet with rare photos, concert flyers, art work, and a new introduction from Luie himself which sheds some light on his original inspiration for the album.

MARC MUNDY- MARC MUNDY CD (companion, usa)
16.98usd/10.22gbp/11.67eur/1562jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… We are thrilled to offer this CD reissue of Marc Mundy's self-titled 1971 LP; a truly unique, privately-issued curiosity rescued from obscurity by one of our favorite trailblazing collectors, New York's Paul Major. Many (Mid)East/West crossover albums surfaced during the psychedelic era but none that sound quite like Mundy's. 'You'll have a hard time finding another LP to compare with this combination of feeling and sound,' Major claims and we couldn't agree more. The emotional effect of Mundy's vocals coupled with his band's irresistible groove is a strange pairing -- you could argue that the two are at odds with each other, but the result is a sound and feel so unique and compelling to our ears, we believe it to be in a class all its own. The CD was mastered from one of the few surviving original copies and includes a 4 panel poster insert with original back cover lyric sheet, a short biography, and a rare 1970 photo of Marc handsomely packaged with original front cover artwork.

THE NEW CREATION- TROUBLED CD (companion, usa)
16.98usd/10.22gbp/11.67eur/1562jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Welcome to the first commercial release of Troubled, the sole output from Vancouver, British Columbia's all-but-forgotten Jesus rock trio, the New Creation. Originally pressed in 1970 in the vinyl LP format in a limited run, this album never quite made it out of its hometown borders. It would be another two or three decades before anyone outside of the group's small circle would hear it at all. The obscurity of this album is impossible to overstate. Only 100 vinyl copies were ever produced and none were available commercially. The New Creation were partly inspired by the music of the Jesus People movement, a Christian adaptation of the '60s movement, which shared the same Haight-Ashbury district birthplace. Jesus People patterned their language, fashion, and music after their hippie neighbors in an attempt to update their expression of faith. This street level movement gained mainstream media exposure around 1970 and within a year cover stories ran in Newsweek, Life, and U.S. News and World Report. Musicians in this scene plotted their own course in an attempt to counteract what they saw as the destructive themes in much of mainstream rock music. Acts born out of this grassroots movement would inspire believers worldwide to cut their own record -- contract or no contract. "A showcase of raw, inventive musicality. Categorically, it's -- I dunno -- Sixties Garage Godcore? Yet it transcends being a mere period piece. The songwriting is deliriously brilliant, the lyrical perspective haunting. The band's sincerity is unquestionable, even if its meters are unfathomable." -- Irwin Chusi

V/A- LEGENDS OF BENIN CD (analog africa, germany)

*finally available on vinyl and restocked on cd… Double vinyl version, in deluxe gatefold sleeve and printed inner sleeves which replicate all of the liner notes from the CD version booklet. Analog Africa presents Legends Of Benin, a collection of super-rare and highly danceable masterpieces recorded between 1969-1981 by four legendary composers from Benin: Gnonnas Pedro, Antoine Dougbé, El Rego et Ses Commandos and Honoré Avolonto, each with a sound all their own. What you are about to hear is distinctively Benin -- a thick brew of agbadja, soul, cavacha, funk, Afrobeat, and Afro-Latin sounds all mixed in with heavy traditional rhythms. Gnonnas Pedro is the king of modern agbadja: a rhythm hugely popular in Togo, Benin and Ghana, based around three pieces of percussion, each with a different tone. Traditionally a rhythm used during burial ceremonies, Gnonnas adopted and modernized it in the mid-'60s, calling it "Agbadja Modern." The track "Dadje Von O Von Non" was originally recorded in 1966 and is Gnonna's first modern rendition of agbadja. Also featured here is the crazy, kick-ass funk track "Okpo Videa Bassouo" recorded in 1973, as well as the sublimely contagious track, "La Musica en Verité." Honoré Avolonto was one of Benin's most prolific composers, releasing Benin's most successful LP in the late '70s. That album was recorded with Black Santiago, a band fronted by amazing trumpeter Ignace De Souza, another legend, with whom he recorded the Afrobeat track, "Dou Dagbe We." Avolonto has fronted some of Benin's most powerful bands and some of those "partnerships" with Orchestre Poly-Rythmo and Les Commandos are presented here. Beware -- killer Afrobeat meets frenetic funk. El Rego et Ses Commandos were responsible for Benin's first Afro-soul-funk track with the support of Ghanean singer, Eddy Black Power. The "Jerk" scene in Benin was triggered by the success of "Feeling You Got," and its infectious accordion riff. "E Nan Mian Nuku" is an Afro-Latin tune combined with a kind of bossa nova, and "Vimado Wingnan" is Benin's most sought-after funk track. Out of all the artists here, Antoine Dougbé is the least known even in Benin, but he created his own style which he dubbed Afro cavacha -- a fantastic mixture of Congolese rhumba, Latin sounds and traditional vodoun rhythms. All of his vinyl releases, especially the ones released on his own Editions Dougbé Antoine label, are incredible and have become some of Africa's most sought-after collector's items. Enjoy the mind-blowing sounds of Benin.

V/A- PARLEZ VOUS POP? CD (bureau b, germany)
19.98usd/12.03gbp/13.73eur/1838jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Parlez Vous Pop? is a compilation of 16 enchanting songs in broken French from the '60s and '70s. French is the language of love. The words flow as smoothly as a vintage Bordeaux, like the suggestively sweet nothings Serge Gainsbourg whispered into Jane Birkin's ear. Ah, France, famed for laisser-faire, laisser-allez and exquisite cuisine -- something patently lacking in the wirtschafts-wonderful Germany of the '50s and '60s (not to mention the United Kingdom). Songs sung in French were not only pleasant to the ear, they promised a better, more luxurious life. Even chansons laced with melancholy hinted at a certain lightness of heart. Some artists -- or their record labels -- simply wanted to see if they could make an impression on the French market, singers like Roy Black, Mary Roos, Peter Kraus or Freddy Quinn, as well as British stars such as Dusty Springfield and Sandy Shaw. Others, notably Reinhard Frédérik Mey, Caterina Valente, Vicky Leandros, were genuine Francophiles and released entire albums in the French language. For some -- Manfred Krug, Alexandra, Marianne Faithful or Ireen Sheer, for example -- it was more a question of having a bit of fun singing one or two French numbers to include on their LPs. The majority of them may have struggled to perfect their French accent, but the near-misses are perhaps the most charming of all. While some of the German performers get very close indeed, with Marlene Dietrich and Manfred Krug earning particular recognition from their French counterparts, the British singers just cannot roll their "R"s or accentuate the "E" at the end of a word. Elsewhere, Alexandra sounds like an exiled East Prussian and Lys Assia gets her tenses in a twist but ce n'est pas grave -- as long as it swings. The booklet contains liner notes from the unique, magnifique Françoise Cactus, vocalist with the Franco-German band Stereo Total.

SUN RA ALL STARS BAND- HIROSHIMA LP (art yard, uk)
34.98usd/21.06gbp/24.04eur/3219jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked, out of print from the label… One of the most enigmatic Sun Ra albums you'll ever hear -- a really striking recording that's filled with a great sense of majesty and cosmic exploration! The extended title track "Hiroshima" features Ra playing pipe organ -- using the instrument quite freely and expressively, to create these sounds that are both oddly spacey, but also have almost an ancient Egyptian sort of feel! The track is one of the sparest we've ever heard from Ra, but also one of the most moving -- an extended tapestry in sound that's filled with amazing moments. The flipside of the record features "Stars That Shine Darkly" -- a real gem that features guest work from Archie Shepp on tenor, Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, Lester Bowie on trumpet, Don Moye on percussion, and Philly Joe Jones on drums! With a lineup like that, there's a wonderful interweaving of jazz styles and traditions going on -- all grounded in a slightly more familiar Arkestra mode, thanks to John Gilmore on tenor and Marshall Allen on alto. The tune beings quite freely, and almost sparely -- sounding a bit like some of the late 60s Paris recordings by either Shepp or Cherry -- but as it moves forward, it develops a bit of a pulse -- and also shows some strains of AACM influence as well! As with other Artyard titles, the quality of this reissue is excellent -- heavy vinyl, wonderful cover and inner sleeve, and full notes on the music -- all a lot better than the original pressing!

*shop favorite restocked… Originally issued as El Saturn 101679, recorded on 10/16/79, never reissued before in any form (before Artyard's prior LP edition in 2005, now out of print). On Jupiter uses more than the usual amount of post recording processing and mixing, nudging up to the jazz-rock/disco music of its time, but not getting too close. These are still eccentric, expanded, lurching musical beasts. And it's nice to hear the oboe and bassoon -- so often lost on the live concert mixes -- so prominent here. The playing is great, as ever. This release along with Sleeping Beauty are two of the more accessible Ra releases and mark a rare experiment in quasi popularity by the band. They are both also, at present, collectors' items.

*shop favorite restocked… In 1971, in Denmark, at the end of a tour, Sun Ra suddenly decided to take his whole band to Egypt. They had no concerts and no contacts there, but Ra sold some recording rights to Black Lion to pay for the tickets and they flew out. They were stopped at customs and their instruments were temporarily impounded, but they were let through as tourists. Then they booked into a hotel facing the pyramid at Giza. Word got to Hartmut Geerken, then working at the Goethe institute, and he quickly threw a concert together at his house in Heliopolis, for which Brigadier Salah Ragab borrowed army instruments for the Arkestra to play (he was later disciplined for it). Ra's Moog had made it through customs and a Tiger Organ was hired. One of the audience (of 25) booked the band in for a Cairo TV session the following day. Then Ragab persuaded the Ministry of Culture to book a concert at the Balloon Theatre (for another tiny audience: only the first 4 rows were occupied). Two more concerts followed -- at the American University (for the cab fare) and the Versailles Club. They stayed for more than a fortnight, making a film while they were there and finally, by band-members selling various personal items, raised the money to fly home. Horizon (also known as Starwatchers and Sun Ra in Egypt Vol. 2) contains a big chunk of the now legendary Balloon Theatre concert (it burned down soon after their visit, as did the hotel in which the Arkestra stayed while they were in Cairo). The Balloon extract is an uncut block (tracks 1- 4 on the CD) and features a lot of Sun Ra's all-hell-let-loose Moog soloing, as well as a great version of 'Discipline #2.' The rest of Horizon is from the Heliopolis concert, kicking off with an instrumental version of 'Enlightenment' and 'Love In Outer Space,' (neither are on the original LP) segueing slowly into 'Space Is The Place' -- followed by drum orchestra, more Ra soloing on Moog, Tiger Organ and detuned piano (bloops, hoovering, whistles, Concords taking off) leading to a first lurching, then wild, 'Discipline #8.' Two bonus tracks, for the first time restored from the original concert, follow: 'We'll Wait For You' (with June Tyson) and 'The Satellites Are Spinning' -- which ends in full-on percussion. A classic recording of a classic band in great form.

SUN RA- DISCO 3000: COMPLETE MILAN CONCERT 1978 2CD (art yard, uk)

*shop favorite restocked… 24-bit (mastered from the original tapes, with booklet notes by performer Michael Ray). 6-panel digipack. Recorded at The Teatro Cilak, 1/23/1978, Milan Italy. In the winter of 1977-1978, philosopher, pianist and bandleader Sun Ra was in Italy. The Italian tour resulted in releases on Sun Ra's own Saturn label, all of which have long been out of print and all but impossible to find. With the re-release of Disco 3000, one of the most celebrated of these elusive Saturn gems is once more available. This release, and its companion Media Dreams, capture a side of Sun Ra's work -- small ensemble, close form, original composition, rather minimal -- that is otherwise under-represented. Depending heavily on Ra's electric and electronic keyboards (including the mysterious Crumar Mainman -- of which even the company has no record) and, more unusually, on his intelligent use of sequencers and rhythm machines, this is an important window on the evolution of Ra's musical thinking, rendered even more transparent by the economy of its means; a quartet comprising only saxophonist John Gilmore, trumpeter Michael Ray and drummer Luqman Ali.

SUN RA- MEDIA DREAMS 2CD (art yard, uk)
34.98usd/21.06gbp/24.04eur/3219jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… This is the companion to Disco 3000, made on the same classic Italian quartet tour with John Gilmore, Michael Ray (trumpet) and the minimal but perfect Luqman Ali (drums). Ra himself plays piano and electronic keyboards, including the mysterious Crumar Mainman, which Ra describes as 'like a piano, organ, clavichord, cello, violin and brass instruments' and which also, importantly, has a facility for pre-programmed bass lines and electronic percussion, which Ra uses constantly and to great effect in this small ensemble setting and seldom, if ever, elsewhere. The best of this collection (most of CD1) is luminous: very electronic, often rhythmical and melodic, always economical and making every sound count. These tracks are like no other jazz ensemble and, although recognizable as Ra -- who else could think of, and then get away with this -- unlike any other Ra ensemble, either. Ra makes the machines do amazing, visionary things while the band exercises restraint, remaining always in focus. In between, there are piano, saxophone, trumpet and drum vignettes, fresh and perfectly judged; this real was a fine band. This places the original vinyl release (and related releases, Sound Mirror and Disco 3000) back into the context of the concerts from which they were drawn. An important addition to the Sun Ra canon, since it is a rare document of an unusual Ra project that produced three classic late '70s LPs. Beautifully packaged and well annotated.

*shop favorite restocked… Exact repro of this 1980 album, the second Sun Ra album to be released on Philly Jazz following Lanquidity. Undated live recording, not previously reissued on either LP or CD! Sun Ra's music is equational. It is based on a system and philosophy as old as the most ancient of civilizations, and it points the way of the future as well. Music is not seen as merely entertainment. Ra has oftentimes mentioned the potentials of music to change the social order. In fact, the highlight of many of his performances is his self-conceived cosmodrama which is essentially a dramatic monologue by Sun Ra in which he outlines the paths toward omniversal perfection. The Arkestra itself becomes the musical foil for Pharonic wisdom and cosmic insight." --Spencer R. Weston

First two tracks probably made during the same session at the Choreographers' Workshop, late 1962 or 1963. Remaining tracks recorded during different sessions around the same period. The master tape of side B is in stereo; all known pressings of the album are in mono, however. The master tape also includes a rejected take of an unidentified piece at the beginning. In addition, three pieces were recorded backwards (!) on the master used by Evidence.

SUN RA & HIS MYTH SCIENCE ARKESTRA- COSMIC TONES FOR MENTAL THERAPY LP (saturn, usa)
15.98usd/9.62gbp/10.98eur/1470jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Tracklisting: And Otherness, Thither and Yon, Adventure-Equation, Moon Dance, Voice of Space. The first two pieces were recorded by Tommy Hunter at the Choreographers' Workshop, New York City, 1963. The last three were recorded at the Tip Top Club, Brooklyn, 1963. 'Moon Dance' was recorded at a joint in Brooklyn called the Tip Top Club, where Hunter was playing in Sarah McLawler's organ trio. Sun Ra and company came in at 10 AM and played for several hours. I suspect that 'Adventure-Equation' and 'Voice of Space' were also recorded at the Tip Top. Ra is not known to have had access to a Hammond organ elsewhere, and although the recording quality is a little better on these pieces, the tapes are still mono, Hunter may have moved his microphones around, and the echo would cover up some of the faults anyway. Note the background talking on 'Moon Dance' and how it carries over into the beginning of 'Voice of Space'. Note whispers at beginning of 'Adventure-Equation'. Note the phone ringing around 4:00 and 7:50 into 'Adventure-Equation'.

*shop favorite restocked… Tracklisting: Worlds Approaching, Strange Strings featuring vocal by Arthur Jenkins, Strange Strings featuring lightning drum. Recorded in New York, probably 1966. A very uncommon Sun Ra LP, originally issued on Thoth (a Saturn-subsidiary?) in '66 or '67. A concept album of sorts, dealing with musicians playing unfamiliar instruments ("Chinese lutes, moon-guitars, mandolin, bass, koto," according to Tam Fiofori). "It is a piece of astonishing variety...Sun Ra here succeeds in creating perhaps the most completely improvised but organic piece in the history of jazz, with no prepared rhythmic, melodic or harmonic material, performed by players on instruments foreign to them." -- John Szwed.

SUN RA- ART FORMS OF DIMENSIONS TOMORROW LP (saturn, usa)
15.98usd/9.62gbp/10.98eur/1470jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Classic Chicago Saturn release, issued in 1965, recorded at the Choreographers' Workshop, all but the last two tracks in the basement (where Ra liked the piano sound). Recorded in New York 1961/1962. Tracklisting: Cluster of Galaxies, Solar Drums , The Outer Heavens, Infinity of the Universe, Lights on a Satellite, Kosmos in Blue. Featuring: "Cluster of Galaxies", "Ankh", "Solar Drums", "The Outer Heavens", "Infinity of the Universe", "Lights on a Satellite", "Kosmos In Blue". With futuristic space interludes that are mindblowing... "This music, performed by a jazz band in the early 1960's, predates Syd Barrett, and occurred long before Tangerine Dream's Electronic Meditations. But you will swear you are listening to a lost Kraut/psych classic inspired by both of these. 'Solar Drums' is everyone in the band grabbing a percussion instrument except for the man behind the recording desk, who plunges everyone into a swirl of echo until they tip and tremble off each other luminescently, plinking brightly in the dark...one of the most amazing documents of Sun Ra's foresight. In these two recordings he anticipated - created? - psychedelic music." -- Happy Dog Potatohead.
