ROCK, POP AND PSYCHEDELIC

RON GEESIN- A RAISE OF EYEBROWS LP (earmark, italy)
22.98usd/11.59gbp/14.87eur/2278jpy (approx)

*Best known as the co-author of Pink Floyd's Atom Heart Mother, this tape manipulator and multi-instrumentalist released his debut on the Transatlantic label in 1967. The contents of the tracks range from bizarre audio collage ('A Raise Of Eyebrows'), to blistering freeform banjo ('Certainly Random'), to traditional jazz arrangements ('Ha! Ha! But Reasonable'), to odd spoken interludes ('Positives').

ERKIN KORAY- TUTKUSU LP (gdr, italy)
34.98usd/17.64gbp/22.64eur/3468jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… This 4th album by the man had never been reissued on vinyl before, so it's good news we have for you. This one's from 1977, and though Erkin went strongly ethnic with his previous album 2, here he went back on his steps and made another brilliant psych-rock album obviously adorned again with some Turkish traditional music elements, though not as strongly as with Elektronik Türküler. Here he even sings some tracks in English, giving the whole album a more occidental appeal but losing near nothing of the incredible enchantment of Erkin's best recordings! Limited reissue of 500 copies with the original artwork in a beautiful gatefold cover.

ERKIN KORAY- ELEKTRONIK TÜRKÜLER LP (gdr, italy)
34.98usd/17.64gbp/22.64eur/3468jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… You probably won't find any other Turkish psych record better than this. A real killer from start to finish, this was originally released in 1974, and is a brutal masterpiece of psychedelic rock blended with Turkish traditional music. The electric guitar of Erkin is outstanding, so is the electric saz used here too, and all tracks are absolutely fantastic. We cannot recommend this one more than we do. Limited reissue of 500 copies with the original artwork in a beautiful gatefold cover.

EL ALAMO- MALOS PENSAMIENTOS LP (gdr, italy)
34.98usd/17.64gbp/22.64eur/3468jpy (approx)

*restocked… Ultra-rare vintage Latin psych-rock record from Peru. This record released in 1971 and up to now is one of the essential rock recordings to come from Peru and maybe even from the whole of South America. El Alamo play genuine psych rock with nice fuzz guitars. Vocals are mostly in English. The original vinyl is rather expensive and very sought-after. Very beautiful artwork! Fantastic remastered sound and nice gatefold covers.

SOFT SHOE- FOR THOSE ALONE LP (gdr, italy)
34.98usd/17.64gbp/22.64eur/3468jpy (approx)

*restocked… Incredibly rare folk-prog record from the United Kingdom. Mellow sounds, nice vocals and good arrangements, it's a pity that this record that had only a very limited private release. Said that, we can easily say that this title ranges among the best obscure electric folk-prog records coming from the UK in those years. Even the artwork can easily concur as one of the most beautiful of this genre." Recorded 1977-78.

CHAKRA- CHAKRA LP (gdr, italy)
34.98usd/17.64gbp/22.64eur/3468jpy (approx)

*restocked… Chakra were a progressive U.S. band with only one LP release in 1979. This record is nearly impossible to find and in case you do, it's pretty expensive. While the lyrics mainly refer to very religious, Christian themes, the music is excellent prog-rock somewhere in between Rush and Yes. The only reason why this record has not become a U.S. prog-rock classic is because of its scarce availability. Fantastic remastered sound and nice carton cover.

GRAPEFRUIT- AROUND LP (grapa, spain)
26.98usd/13.61gbp/17.46eur/2675jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Very cool Beatlesque late '60s British psych-pop with sophisticated arrangements employing baroque/psychedelic touches of strings, orchestration and keyboards. Wonderful reissue with original artwork.

CHARALAMBIDES- ROSE/THORN LP (klang industries, usa)
20.98usd/10.58gbp/13.58eur/2080jpy (approx)

*Long-, long-, long-, loooooong-awaited and singular entry in the Charalambides and Klang Industries discographies; one of those 'does it really exist?' items that's finally seeing daylight, or moonlight. A stark, unsettling and beautiful slice of duo Charlambides invocation/incantation, taken from the period between Jason Bill and Heather Leigh Murray's tenures with the band and featuring extraordinary chord organ and vocal work from Christina and some signature lap steel mastery from Tom. Fans of the band's most recent, more song-based work will find this relevatory, long-time listeners will say 'ahhhh' and settle in for the flight. Heavy vinyl, limited pressing, cover handiwork by Tom, the first release in years from Klang and a sign perhaps of a truly epic revival." "Long-awaited Klang debut of Charalambides. This record has been brewing since 2000, and is now finally available under the auspices of Eclipse/Klang. Two side-long improvisations in much the same vein as IN CR EA SE, a bit more topographical perhaps, but still horizontally serene and horizonless. Chord organ, lap steel, vocals.

PAUL ADOLPHUS- THE DAWN WIND LP (shadoks, germany)
44.98usd/22.68gbp/29.11eur/4460jpy (approx)

*restocked… First reissue of a very obscure Japanese private press folk album from 1973. Deluxe gatefold reproduction of the original sleeve, usual lavish Shadoks treatment. Edition of 350 copies. The Australian artist Paul Adolphus recorded the album in Kyoto/Japan, playing guitar, vocals, flutes, shakuhachi. Totally vibed-out "personal" folk-psych… My first visit to Japan was in 1968 after living in India and Sri Lanka. My wife at the time arrived in Kyoto, and had our first child there. We really loved it. We returned to Sweden then went back to Kyoto and had our second child there. We lived in a two hundred year old farm house in a village outside Kyoto. It was a great scene at the time. Japanese artists, bohemians, and visiting foreigners making art music poetry etc. I was playing music with different people, then developed a musical relationship with Mitsu Harada. We did concerts and toured to other cities in Japan together. Before leaving Japan Mitsu organized to record the album together. Mitsu's father was the grand master of a calligraphy school. In a large room in the school Mitsu set up mikes and a big stereo recorder consul. Most of the playing was by Mitsu and myself, an American friend played a little guitar and percussion to fill some holes. A group of friends sat around, so it was a bit of a living room concert feel. It was my material, Mitsu engineered as well as playing. I think there were 200 copies pressed, the covers were hand made, so it was released into the small arts community of Kyoto and Tokyo. Not long after the recording I travelled with the family to Australia, I had been away from here for a decade. I worked on a lot of projects here, composing for theatre and dance. I had a group called Living Music -- an African drummer, Indian tabla, didjeridoo, winds etc. It was early days, not too many people were ready for world music." Shadoks: "Incredibly rare and sought-after mellow folk album with beautiful songs and harmonies, like a Japanese version of Extradition.

ANTOINE RENCONTRE LES PROBLEMES- ANTOINE RENCONTRE LES PROBLÈMES LP (sweet dandelion, uk)
30.98usd/15.62gbp/20.05eur/3071jpy (approx)

*For the first time reissued on vinyl, this is a piece of scorching French '60s garage punk. Don't be fooled by Antoine's name, this has nothing to do with his latter contributions to French sissy pop. Antoine sings on four of the songs in this album. With Les Problèmes, we're talking garage music at its best here, with fuzz and distortion everywhere, rough sound and haunting fuzz riffs, but each song has its own charm without being repetitive. Our favorite garage French-sung LP (it beats all the Québec-produced albums!) by far, we just can't understand why this hasn't been reissued until now. Included also as bonus tracks are two non-LP tracks from Les Problèmes' rare first EP, with the killer 'Passe Ton Chemin.' Remastered sound, original artwork and strictly limited to 500 copies!

JULY- JULY LP (sweet dandelion, uk)
26.98usd/13.61gbp/17.46eur/2675jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… One of the best UK psychedelic albums ever, made available again!!! Originally released in 1968, includes all their best tracks like 'My Clown' or 'Dandelion Seeds.' An absolute must!

V/A- SHAPES & SOUNDS: ORANGE & RED BEAMS FROM THE BBC ARCHIVES 1967-1969 LP (top sounds, uk)
27.98usd/14.11gbp/18.11eur/2774jpy (approx)

*lp version. Including a 16-page color booklet based on a vintage Radio Times… Following on from Alphabeat, Top Sounds is proud to announce the release of a second compilation, a delightful selection of choice '60s rarities from the otherwise largely inaccessible BBC archives. Spanning a period of almost two years, Shapes & Sounds offers 17 performances taped in BBC studios for broadcast not only on the more familiar radio shows such as Top Gear and Saturday Club, but also some of the daytime weekly programs such as The Dave Cash Programme. This release features six bands, all of whom will be familiar to collectors of psychedelia and pop of the period, some of which are lauded as being amongst the most rated groups of their time. For many, pride of place will go to Kaleidoscope, as Shapes & Sounds features two tracks that are missing from the BBC's Transcription Service archive and consequently were not included on the Please Listen To The Pictures BBC set. Thanks to the recent discovery of a transcription disc, Top Sounds are privileged to complete the jigsaw and offer a choice version of the band's most contagious single 'Jenny Artichoke,' as well as a stupendous rendition of the Faintly Blowing cut 'Music' which is guaranteed to have Kaleidoscope's legion of followers in ecstasy! Also thought lost and making their debut on are three splendid tracks by Tomorrow featuring Keith West, sourced from two editions of Top Gear in October 1967 and February 1968. Included are excellent renditions of 'Blow Up' and 'Colonel Brown,' but the pick of the bunch is almost certainly 'Real Life Permanent Dream,' with its overdrive of twisting wah-wah guitar throughout from the nimble fingers of Steve Howe. It's been a while since any fresh music from Timebox was released and Shapes & Sounds offers their four remaining session tracks from the Beeb archives, which include a beautiful version of their famed 'Beggin,' a rendition of 'Yellow Van' which most definitely puts the single cut to shame, a superb take of 'Stay There' and perhaps most importantly, an admirable slice of blue-eyed soul in their cover of the Young Rascals' 'A Girl Like You,' which the band never recorded outside of the BBC. The Montanas' discography is noted by many as being rather hit or miss, but that is most definitely not the case with their inclusion on Shapes & Sounds, and most will no doubt be surprised and animated by the BBC take of their most prized pop/psych 45, A Step In The Right Direction. That excellent single was enhanced by a wash of phasing, but in this live performance the song is literally drowned in a veritable tidal wave of that glorious wind tunnel effect, while 'You're Never Going to Get My Lovin' would have made a better choice for a single than some of those that were actually released. The other Montanas performances form something of a Moby Grape tribute, with a cracking rendering of 'Hey Grandma' and a blistering attack on 'Omaha.' Of all these numbers from their repertoire, only 'A Step In The Right Direction' ever appeared on a single. Oxfordshire's Gentle Influence have come to more prominence recently with the inclusion of their popular 'Easy To Know' on the 'Le Beat Bespoke' compilation and Top Sounds have uncovered a similarly styled nugget with their BBC only cover of Curtis Mayfield's 'You've Been Cheatin',' as well as a superior version of their final 1969 A-side 'Always Be A Part Of My Living.' And last but my no means least, The Spectrum -- hitherto not the most rated of '60s bands by some -- impress with a fuzz guitar-spiked performance of 'Headin' For A Heatwave' which is more virile and much more atmospheric than the 45 version, and they enthusiastically rip through a Beeb only take of The Artwoods favorite 'I Take What I Want.' The sound quality is absolutely superb throughout, with nearly every track sourced from original BBC Transcription records. The Tomorrow performances have been taken from excellent off-air recordings and similarly shine and few of the tracks on the collection needed much enhancement at all, all have nevertheless been professionally restored and mastered. The presentation is immaculate and as with the Alphabeat release, Artholeghraphics have designed a memorable period-flavored package. Includes a 24-page booklet packed with illustrations, band histories and listings of all their known BBC sessions written and supplied by Nigel Lees, author of much of Record Collector magazine's 'The British Psychedelic Trip' series. Except for one of the Montanas recordings being bootlegged many years ago, none of the tracks have ever been commercially available and most have not been heard in public since the '60s. All copies are hand numbered and Shapes & Sounds is a legitimate limited edition release, licensed from the BBC with the blessing/co-operation of no less than 19 band members.

V/A- SHAPES AND SOUNDS VOLUME TWO: SHADES OF DEEPEST PURPLE FROM THE BBC ARCHIVES 1967-1971 LP (top sounds, uk)
30.98usd/15.62gbp/20.05eur/3071jpy (approx)

*restocked… With this second excavation of previously unreleased live BBC session performances spanning the period 1967-1971, Shapes And Sounds becomes a series and Volume Two features a completely different line up of bands from last year's set. Pride of place on this second edition arguably goes to The Gun, with three astonishing performances that were recorded nearly a year before 'Race With The Devil' which illustrate their late '67 menu of mod and psych pop, with cracking versions of Rupert's Peoples 'Hold On,' Paul Simons 'A Most Peculiar Man' and a quite splendid airing of their legendary 'Light On The Wall!' The Casuals surprise with the beat of 'Midnight Confessions' and 'Take Me For A Little While' as well as a fine rendering of 'Jesamine,' while The Mirage perform a live version of their May 1967 single 'The Wedding Of Ramona Blair.' The Alan Bown! play an excellent take of 'Magic Handkerchief' and even more interestingly offer two numbers that never appeared on any Bown release, with the self-penned progressive popper 'Movie Star Baby' and a brilliant interpretation of The Association's 'Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies.' Also with three tracks on Shapes And Sounds are Wales' The Bystanders, who turn in a lovely version of 'Royal Blue Summer Sunshine Day' as well as a glorious homage to The Byrds with 'Renaissance Fair.' Even better and long talked about in collectors' circles but never previously released is their absolutely stunning rendition of 'I Am The Walrus,' which Top Sounds are sure will disappoint no one! Sourced from an off-air recording of their only British television appearance on Disco 2, Killing Floor perform 'Milkman' from their Out Of Uranus LP in superb quality (the TV show was wiped decades ago) and of similarly heinous rarity are live tracks from Portrait and Katch 22, who turn in forceful renderings of 'Born To Be Wild' and 'The Price Of Love,' respectively (the latter of which is better than the Status Quo cover!) The sound quality is absolutely superb throughout, with 12 of the 16 tracks sourced from original BBC Transcription records. The other performances have been taken from excellent off-air recordings and similarly shine and though few of the tracks on the collection needed much enhancement at all, all have nevertheless been professionally restored and mastered. The presentation is immaculate and as with the previous Shapes And Sounds release, Artholeghraphics have designed a memorable period flavored package. The LP has a 16 page color booklet based on a vintage Radio Times packed with illustrations, band histories and listings of all their known BBC sessions written and supplied by Nigel Lees, author of much of Record Collector magazine's 'The British Psychedelic Trip' series. Except for the Mirage recording being bootlegged many years ago (in lesser quality!), none of the tracks have ever been commercially available and most have not been heard in public since the '60s. Shapes And Sounds is a legitimate limited edition release, licensed from the BBC with the blessing and co-operation of many band members.

V/A- ALPHABEAT: POP, PSYCH & PROG ROCK 1967-1970 LP (top sounds, uk)
27.98usd/14.11gbp/18.11eur/2774jpy (approx)

*restocked. lp version. Contains an 12-page lavishly illustrated magazine-style booklet, and housed in authentic '60s fashion with a laminated sleeve… Compiled and realized by Nigel Lees (author of much of Record Collector magazine's long running series 'The British Psychedelic Trip'), Alphabeat marks the debut release on his own label Top Sounds, a collection which brings together 13 rare slices of pop, psychedelia and progressive rock recorded during 1967-1970. Only 2 have appeared previously on compilations, the remainder bar the obscure 1970 45 by Mississippi have never been released and make their vinyl and CD debut on Alphabeat. All tracks have been professionally restored and the release includes an informative and profusely illustrated 24-page booklet which features histories of all the artists, together with many photos which have never been published before. The release has the blessing of at least one member of each group and in some cases several. Many of the selections on Alphabeat were not even known to exist before the release of the compilation, and few connoisseurs of obscure late '60s pop, psych and prog will be disappointed with its contents. Dubbed from a master supplied by a Belgian television company, 'Foxy Lady' and 'Toad' were recorded live at a pop festival in 1968 and prove The Barrier to be as exciting on stage as on their best singles from the same year, while Mississippi impress with their heavy bluesy rock which is lifted from their lone and very rare 45 from 1970. The pigeonholing of Breakthru as a lightweight pop act through their only single 'Ice Cream Tree' is devastatingly dismissed by the unveiling of 2 incendiary slices of psychedelically-inclined rock recorded at a Birmingham studio in late 1967, and an unknown group who recorded at R.G Jones' OAK studios sound uncannily like The Game 3 years on with the slow burning 'First Back From Heaven.' The Pathfinders' 'Pumpkin Lantern' has appeared before on compilations on a number of occasions, but thanks to the discovery of another acetate copy, it's presented here in premium quality together for the first time with its previously ignored but very special rendering of the Bee Gees' 'To Love Somebody.' Graded Grains have presented psych collectors with a mystery and an enigma since their acetate of 'Animal Magic' and ' Lucifer Sam' was unearthed for Chocolate Soup For Diabetics Volume 3 way back in the early '80s, and such was their dogged obscurity that some came to believe there was no such band called Graded Grains at all. Top Sounds however, are able to present 4 tracks recorded on the continent in Paris in 1969 which beautifully exhibit authentic pop psych with a marked Barrett-era Pink Floyd influence, one of which is a later (and much cleaner!) take of the famed 'Animal Magic.' And last but by no means least, the legendary blues band Black Cat Bones prove their versatility and deliver an uptempo psych-flavored rocker called 'Warmth Of The Day,' which aside from inclusion on a fairly recent bootleg has only previously been available on the rare 1969 promotional for the QE2 ocean liner.

TYRANNOSAURUS REX- MY PEOPLE WERE FAIR AND HAD SKY IN THEIR HAIR BUT NOW THEY'RE CONTENT TO WEAR STARS ON THEIR BROWS LP (vinyl lovers, russian federation)
31.98usd/16.13gbp/20.69eur/3171jpy (approx)

*Before Marc Bolan became the glam rock superstar behind T-Rex, he was just a hippy boy with a guitar, writing fantastical Tolkien-inspired folk songs populated by fairies and ogres. But thanks to producer Tony Visconti, this boy & his trusty drum-playing friend Steve Peregrine Took soon had a record contract and this, their debut album, actually made it to the top of the British charts in 1967 when it was released. Stereo version with 1 bonus track and lyrics insert.

OS MUTANTES- MUTANTES LP (vinyl lovers, russian federation)
31.98usd/16.13gbp/20.69eur/3171jpy (approx)

*Fusing traditional Brazilian music, psychedelia, rock and a good dose of pure experimentalism, with the release of their 1968 debut, Os Mutantes quickly became giants in the outer fringes of pop music, soon reaching mythic proportions. With their second album, Mutantes, released in 1969, the band continued in this same vein of boundary crushing, featuring tracks like the futuristic 'Dois Mil e Um.'

OS MUTANTES- OS MUTANTES LP (lilith, russian federation)
23.98usd/12.09gbp/15.52eur/2377jpy (approx)

*restocked… With the release of their debut LP in 1968, Os Mutantes cracked the already red hot Tropicalia scene wide open. Fusing traditional Brazilian music, psychedelia, rock and a good dose of pure experimentalism, they quickly became giants both in Brazil and in the outer fringes of pop music, where they have managed to reign supreme for the past four decades. Not an easy task in such a crowded arena. Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Jorge Ben, Tom Zé, AND Os Mutantes? What do these people put in their drinking water? The band went on to release several more albums, but this one was their magnum opus.

LAGHONIA- ETCETERA LP/7” (world in sound, germany)
49.98usd/25.20gbp/32.34eur/4955jpy (approx)

*restocked… The EtCetera album originally released in 1971, one of South Americas greatest. It comes with outstanding original artwork, a true psychedelic painting by M. Cornejo, in a foldout cover, and extra 7" 4 track EP with 2 never released songs.

Includes 6 bonus tracks from the CD deluxe version. Gatefold sleeve, 180 gram virgin vinyl.

THE CURE- PORNOGRAPHY 2LP (vinyl lovers, russian federation)
41.98usd/21.17gbp/27.17eur/4162jpy (approx)

*1982's Pornography, still considered by many to be their best, was the band's darkest album to date, cementing their role as beacons of the emergent gothic rock genre, with the band sporting their signature red lipstick and big hair look for the first time during this tour. Eight bonus tracks from the deluxe CD version. Gatefold sleeve, 180 gram virgin vinyl.

Using 2 basses and electronics, the recording captures them in fine form in their less-abusive sonic range with all the power that their carefully crafted sound conveys live. JOHN WIESE/DEAD MACHINES/DAMION ROMERO- FRIDAY THE 13TH 2LP (anarchymoon recordings, usa)
18.98usd/9.57gbp/12.28eur/1881jpy (approx)

*restocked… fierce live recording of this epic event on jan 13, 2006. one side per set, including final side of 4-way collaboration. somehow they managed to fuse the minimal low-fi rig of dead machines with the maximal power cycle of damion romero and spatious neutron radiation of john wiese, i was wondering how they were gonna pull it off.... it is a crunch-roaring bewilderment in sound. john wiese - sonic landscapes that swirl and build, psychedelic even. dead machines - slow grind through homemade speaker-suitcase. a groovy ride on nails and steel wool. damion romero - physical psychic, you could feel it in the concrete floor. 4-way collab - thunder-wail with flowers and sharks. *****sonic hallucinations all. 2xlp black vinyl, pro labels, b/w paste on covwe by seizure palace in the usual beyond-sick fashion on 12"x40" sheets. limited edition of 515.

JUSTICE YELDHAM AND THE DYNAMIC RIBBON DEVICE- BIRTHDAYS LP (anarchymoon recordings, usa)
14.98usd/7.55gbp/9.69eur/1485jpy (approx)

*Birthdays consists of two live sets by maverick amplified-glass player Justice Yeldham recorded during his & Keg's recent tour of Europe. If you've never heard of the guy you are in for a bloody treat. Using concert-grade piano contact mics, he amplifies a sheet of glass and plays it with his mouth and face, processing it with pedals attached to his belt, usually barefooted. The results are unworldly, and hearing it you would never imagine what created it, something only an Aussie could achieve. Like careening assaults of insect spaceships, he transports the listener to other worlds of sound, ending most often in a crash of the glass upon his head. He survives, bloody but alive, never worse for wear in the morning. Side A was captured in Marseille on the eve of Justice's 35th birthday while side B was recorded on Kegs birthday in Porto (for a preview listen at myspace.com/justiceyeldham). And to top off the birthday cheer Keg also did the cover illustration as a gift for Justice's Birthday. Mastered by the god-like Rasheed of Dubplates (Berlin), the record has been collaboratively released in an edition of 600 copies across the world by Anarchymoon Recordings (North America), Turgid Animal (Europe) & All Thumbs Press (Australia). Black vinyl, B-on-W labels, 2-sided glue-on cover art limited edition of 600.

FOLK, BLUES AND ROOTS

WASHINGTON PHILLIPS- WHAT ARE THEY DOING IN HEAVEN TODAY? LP (mississippi, usa)
11.98usd/6.04gbp/7.75eur/1187jpy (approx)

*second edition with regular printed jacket. Original recordings from 1927-1929, with Phillips perhaps accompanied on the Dolceola (miniature piano-like instrument). Beautifully haunting music from Phillips. His sweetly-sung Christian blues, bathed in a celestial haze of notes from an instrument that sounds like a child's music box, stand out amongst the work of guitar evangelists and street corner Scripture-ites of the era. Phillips' sacred porch songs provide evidence of a higher power, for how could man alone create music for the angels? These recordings sound remarkable from being from the 1920s.

V/A- I DON'T FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE 1927-1948 LP (mississippi, usa)
11.98usd/6.04gbp/7.75eur/1187jpy (approx)

*restocked… second edition with regular printed jacket. This compilation is our tribute to the music made in the U.S. between 1927 and 1948. We decided not only to focus on traditional genres (blues, old-time, Cajun), but to also show the music that was brought by the boatloads of immigrants coming to these shores. Their music influenced and still affects our culture today. The album starts off with a heavenly example of Greek rebetica from Marika Papagika. Also featured is early Tex-Mex pioneer Lydia Mendoza and gospel duo Two Gospel Keys. The latter gives us our title track. Louisiana Cajun music is beautifully executed by artists Cleoma Falcon and Blind Uncle Gaspard with Dela Lachney. The Blue Sky Boys may be considered old-time, but their haunting, melancholic harmonies belong in their own genre. The Caresser and Wilmouth Houdini bring on the Calypso with that New York jazz flavor. Hawaiian slack key guitar is demonstrated by Mike Hanapi's Ilima Islanders and Mme. Riviere's Hawaiians. Aside from Calypso, NY was also a big hub for Jewish klezmer, as shown by Jacob Hoffman playing with Henry Kandel's Orchestra. Sexteto Bolona is a great example of the roots of salsa and there's even a mystery track by an unknown Indonesian folk singer of the time. The comp ends with blues performer Big Boy Cleveland with his oddly original 'Quill Blues.' A beautiful record from beginning to end.

V/A- LIFE IS A PROBLEM LP (mississippi, usa)
11.98usd/6.04gbp/7.75eur/1187jpy (approx)

*restocked… second edition with regular printed jacket, no longer comes w/ a bonus 7". "Compilation of raw electric guitar-based gospel recorded between 1949 & 1976. Hard to find & unreleased gospel that makes most rock & roll sound weak & contained. Features Utah Smith, Rev. Lonnie Farris, Sister O.M Terrill & many lesser known artists. Fourteen tracks in all.

FUNK AND SOUL

V/A- ECCENTRIC SOUL: THE BIG MACK LABEL 2LP (numero group, usa)
21.98usd/11.08gbp/14.22eur/2179jpy (approx)

*The fourth volume in our Eccentric Soul series examines the oil-stained underside of the Motor City sound. There are no gold records, million dollar buyouts, or quaint museums at the end of the story, just a handful of four figure 45s, a box of photographs, and a condemned building. If Detroit was once an ocean of soul, the Big Mack label was certainly an island. Big Mack lasted an incredible 20 years without so much as a sniff of a hit. Dogged by lack of airplay, distribution, and a general lack of understanding of the music business, the label failed on almost every level except where it counted; the music. From soulful doo-wop to blistering garage funk, a left at sultry R&B and then a quick dodge into budget Hendrix wailing over a steel drum break, this disc is the epitome of Eccentric Soul. Artists include Bob & Fred, the Manhattens, Edd Henry, Ms. Tyree Jones, Essence, Performers, Mae Young, Soul President, Sleepwalkers, Grand Prix's, and L. Hollis & the Mackadoos.

JAZZ

PHILIP COHRAN AND THE ARTISTIC HERITAGE ENSEMBLE- MALCOLM X MEMORIAL LP (mississippi, usa)
18.98usd/9.57gbp/12.28eur/1881jpy (approx)

*restocked… an early member of the Sun Ra Arkestra, Philip Cohran went on to record & self-release this LP in 1968, originally in an edition of 1,000. Cohran was a personal friend of Malcolm X, & this is a concept album musically telling the story of Malcolm's political & spiritual journey. It features a tight groove-oriented band (which later evolved into the Pharoahs, & then Earth, Wind, & Fire!) who explore soul, jazz, & Middle Eastern rhythms. A politically radical & intense recording not to be missed. Philip Cohran is a much under-appreciated musical genius, & we are proud to reissue this album for the first time on vinyl. Gatefold LP with archival photos & liner notes.

DUBSTEP AND GRIME

ZOMBY- MU5H/SPLIFF DUB: RUSTLE REMIX 12” (hyperdub, uk)
11.98usd/6.04gbp/7.75eur/1187jpy (approx)

*This is installment #2 of Hyperdub's rapid-fire assault on 2008, which continues to mine a rich bleep seam. Both Zomby and Glaswegian producer Rustie have built up a dedicated following with a string of off-key productions. Their first Hyperdub outing is headlined by Zomby's epic bleep symphony "Mu5h," a dramatic and melodic 8-bit stepper, while the retooling of "Spliff Dub" scuttles along with wonky percussion, jiggy grooves, speaker-busting bass, blaring synths and a chopped-up vocal instructing you how to "keep the evil away”.

SENSI- SENSI DUB 12” (sensi, uk)
14.98usd/7.55gbp/9.69eur/1485jpy (approx)

*Lord-a-mercy, it's happening again and this release isn't even going to touch the sides. A highly-rated production duo originating from the 'golden triangle' south of London visit an ultra-heavy low-end dubstep decimation. The rhythm manages to link Barrington Levy's early dancehall bombs, via eight-bit sleng teng origination through its transduction by early '90s hardcore junglism and fully rewire the whole glorious lineage of this lyrical conceit with massive 2007 bass pressure. Don't sleep, or it will be gone. Smoker's delight!!!

HOUSE, TECHNO AND DISCO

THE DIAPHANOIDS- WHERE WERE YOU IN 5079? 12” (bear entertainment, germany)
11.98usd/6.04gbp/7.75eur/1187jpy (approx)

*From the netherland of the kosmos, here come The Diaphanoids. With a bizarre and mind-boggling musical background these psychonauts will deliver their own unique blend of lunar funkadelia + spaced-out disco + astro rock + galactic soul + confuzed boogie + congotronics + krautgrooves + '70s soundtracks, with titles like excerpts from psy/sci-fi B-movies. So turn your dream machine on, get off your psychic asses and start walking on the laser's edge... all aboard the Space Train captained by tin Pac-men from toy planets. 1972-1977-1978-1979-1980... Berlin-Munich-London-Paris-New York... they've seen the best minds of those generations crisped and motherfunked by the active oxidants of brainium zythernitrate. The Diaphanoids (visible division) are: Andrea Bellentani and Simon Maccari. Remixes for their debut single come from the exciting talent of Toby Tobias (Rekids, Bear Funk Gold) in 2 forms: his epic Proton mix coming in at over 10 minutes long and the superb lazer-disco dub mix. Massive and excited reactions already from Padded Cell's Richard Sen, Idjut Boys, Tim Sweeney (DFA, Beats In Space), Lindstrøm, Prins Thomas, Toby Tobias, Stevie Kotey, Arturo Capone, Simon Lee (Faze Action), Chicken Lips and Fabrizio Mammarella.

GOAT DANCE- IN THE SYSTEM 12” (bear entertainment, germany)
11.98usd/6.04gbp/7.75eur/1187jpy (approx)

*restocked… More high-voltage electronic boogie from Chicken Lips member Dean Meredith under his solo moniker, Goat Dance. Funky Euro disco in the tradition of Giorgio Moroder and '80s italo sounds that also gets a rockin' remix treatment from Steve Kotey and Max Essa who go by the team name Loggaphon.

GOAT DANCE- GOAT DANCE 12” (bear entertainment, germany)
11.98usd/6.04gbp/7.75eur/1187jpy (approx)

*restocked… Yes, he is back! Dean Meredith aka Goat Dance and one third of Chicken Lips provides us with more his wonky discoid sound. 'Goat Dance' is probably the most floor oriented piece of music from the Goat so far. Championed by Stevie Kotey as his secret weapon for the last four months, he has seen the effect this track has had on dancefloors around the globe. Goat Dance is pure disco drama with its eerie Juno synth chords and bassline so simple but so amazingly fat it should carry a health warning. As usual, the drums and percussion on 'Goat Dance' are spot on! The flipside 'Goat Dance' (Version) takes the bassline and drums a step further with a spine tingling dub version that would have Joe Gibbs running for cover. Don't miss this or you might regret it and be sad for the rest of your life. Remember Goat Dances are limited pressings!

SEBASTIAN ROYA- ANDANTE 12” (connoisseur supérieur, germany)
12.98usd/6.55gbp/8.40eur/1287jpy (approx)

*Sebastian Roya is back on Supérieur again, Connaisseur's sub-imprint, where he had his first release and his first hit. With "Andante," he shows his talent for massively drivin' voodoo grooves and weird soundscapes. He layers and builds until the track is a big rolling bulldozer no one can stop. Jens Zimmermann, a warhorse of electronic music for almost 20 years, is responsible for the outstanding remix. Sounds bustling about and echo chambers so 3D, you'd like to move into them.

RICHARD BELSOM- BANSHEE 12” (confused, germany)
12.98usd/6.55gbp/8.40eur/1287jpy (approx)

*The world famous Confused label says hello to a new artist: Richard Belsom. His debut track on Oliver Huntemann's cult imprint is called 'Banshee' and it is literally rocking as all hell. Plain and dry techno beats with super cool cymbal toppings underneath psychotic synth sounds and roaring basses that will turn any boring night into an extravagant techno party. To round out the package, it is up to our well known friends Piemont aka Phunklarique & Dejonka to deliver one of their rawest and most stripped-down remixes. Repetitive euphoria -- a must have!

PHIL KIERAN- MISSP 12” (cocoon, germany)
12.98usd/6.55gbp/8.40eur/1287jpy (approx)

*Ireland's Phil Kieran is back again with Missp on Cocoon Recordings, continuing consistently where he stopped with his contribution to the Cocoon Compilation G collection: groovy, dark, technoid -- a sound that reminds of some fog & strobo parties in the mid-'90s. A perfect prime-time track. On the B-side, Pig & Dan interpret the track and give it a new look that is trance-y and playful, but with a good twist of acid and as good as the original.

BOOKA SHADE- PLANETARY/CITY TALES 12” (get physical, germany)
12.98usd/6.55gbp/8.40eur/1287jpy (approx)

*Booka Shade return to their roots with a 12" of sheer dancefloor firepower. "Planetary" appears on this 12" in two forms: club and dub. The club mix features low-end tweaks, crowd-hyping drums and a melodic stylophone refrain. The dub mix is a darker, more minimalist affair -- serious, seductive and mind-bending house music. Booka's version of "City Tales" is an uncompromisingly dark but delicate scorcher with a sensuous swing. Booka Shade invites you to chase the night and the neon light.

SAMUEL L SESSION- OFF THE CHAIN 12” (klap klap, germany)
12.98usd/6.55gbp/8.40eur/1287jpy (approx)

*The raw power of this fifth installment is nothing but delicious! Samuel is back with another tech-house record that will for sure be a real wallshaker. Just listen to the energy and madness Elbee Bad provided with his vocals. It's insane people! In a good way of course, if there ever was another way. Enough said!

SAMUEL L SESSION- REMIXES PART 01 12” (klap klap, germany)
11.98usd/6.04gbp/7.75eur/1187jpy (approx)

*The number of people who have played and are still playing the last release from Klap Klap, 'Can You Relate,' is just too many to mention. It's never easy to do crossover records but with that one Samuel really nailed it. Another number in the catalogue that was very popular was the first release, 'Easy Walker.' Especially the 'Smokestack' track seemed to find its way into many boxes all over. So therefore it was not a very difficult decision to do some new fresh mixes.

SAMUEL L SESSION- CAN YOU RELATE 12” (klap klap, germany)
11.98usd/6.04gbp/7.75eur/1187jpy (approx)

*The music on this third release sounds a bit like a mixture of Ame, Derrick Carter, Lil Louis, Carl Craig and Basic Channel. Which is a good thing. We would like to think that this is the most loveable number so far. By miles! Fonky, groovy, dark and deep tech-house that is just begging to be played at the right moment. Paris The Black Fu from Detroit Grand Pubahs has provided the vocals. And he actually has a message. Can you relate?

DJ SANDRINHO/DANIEL HAAKSMAN/DJ BEWARE- RIO BAILE FUNK BREAKS LP (man recordings, germany)
18.98usd/9.57gbp/12.28eur/1881jpy (approx)

*A true supergroup of DJs has teamed up for the release of Rio Baile Funk Breaks, the world's first-ever battle vinyl exclusively dedicated to baile funk -- the mad beats from Rio. This transnational DJ cooperation presents the best beats and elements, and the most sampled voices, breaks and loops of baile funk's rich musical history. The release contains more lock grooves and skipless beats for the advanced turntablist, made entirely of original Rio funk. This is the essential baile funk source material -- the first and only one of its kind. DJ Sandrinho is currently one of Rio de Janeiro's hottest DJs. Playing the tough Rio favela circuit for more than a decade, he's one of the top cats in the game. In spring 2006, Sandrinho released the seminal first volume in the Baile Funk Masters series, and remixed M.I.A., Bonde Do Role, Tag Team, Gotan Project, Edu K and more. In 2005, Sandrinho started to spin internationally, being one of the few Rio funk DJs regularly visiting Europe. On his side, Sandrinho presents the trademark grooves of baile funk, spiced up with sounds and effects. Berlin-based Daniel Haaksman is Europe's leading baile funk DJ and impresario. He's the compiler of the genre-defining compilations Rio Baile Funk: Favela Booty Beats, Vols. 1 and 2 on Essay Recordings, which introduced baile funk to the world. He is the label boss of Man Recordings and conceived both the acclaimed Funk Mundial and Baile Funk Masters serieses, and has helped the international career launch of Edu K. As a DJ with almost 20 years of club experience, Daniel Haaksman regularly spins across Europe as an ambassador of funk and other unclassifiable grooves. For Rio Baile Funk Breaks, Haaksman opened his funk archives and provided many of the loops and sounds. DJ Beware is Hong Kong's three-time Technics DMC champion. This radio DJ, remixer and globe-trotting party rocker is a dedicated fan of Rio's mad beats. Currently based in Vienna, DJ Beware hosts a daily mix show on acclaimed radio station FM4. DJ Beware came up with the idea of the baile funk battle vinyl record, and arranged DJ Sandrinho's and Daniel Haaksman's material to be ready for the jam-rocking business. This is an absolutely essential DJ tool and an irreplaceable archive of the best baile beats for your own personal favela party.

VAN RIVERS- MESSED UP ALTERNATIVE 12” (stockholm ltd, germany)
12.98usd/6.55gbp/8.40eur/1287jpy (approx)

*We're incredibly happy to be starting this new project! Islands and Islets is a Berlin-based record label run as a daughter imprint to dance-oriented Stockholm LTD, founded by Pär Grindvik. This new label has developed from a constant stream of new influences that all together make up our own special idea of independent and underground music. Islands and Islets' qualities can be enjoyed by more 'inexperienced' listeners as well as by the 'knowing' ears of a record collector. Using electronics to rework and redevelop sound -- whether it be instrumental or with vocals. With the hope of finding a new balance of two worlds, Island & Islets strives to create something new and unique that has roots in our physical realm. Our first 12" release, Van Rivers' Messed Up Alternative. Van Rivers catches that special movement and provides us with a great tool for both peak-time and afterhours!

STEVE LAWLER- SLEEPWALKING PART 2 12” (tsuba, uk)
12.98usd/6.55gbp/8.40eur/1287jpy (approx)

*restocked… part 2 -- limited edition one-sided 12" featuring the huge original mix which encapsulates Steve's new sound -- gritty groove leads big room electronic club music. Steve describes the track as 'getting the biggest crowd reaction of all my recent productions.'
