PUNK AND POST-PUNK

METAL BOYS- TOKIO AIRPORT CD (acute, usa) 14.98usd/7.60gbp/10.16eur/1638jpy (approx)

*restocked… After years of forging their seminal synth-punk sound in the late 70s and receiving critical yet little financial success, Paris's Metal Urbain had no choice but to re-group and, with the addition of a female vocalist, take their processed electronics aesthetic even further as the Metal Boys. Their mash-up of sounds and styles makes them difficult to pigeon-hole, but punk, rockabilly, Gainsbourge-esque song, dub, industrial, and new wave all appear. The Metal Boys created one of the greatest synth-pop experiments of the time, but until now few have been able to hear their long out-of-print avant-electro. Acute Records is proud to present for the first time ever on one CD their only LP Tokio Airport plus nine previously unreleased tracks.

METAL URBAIN- ANARCHY IN PARIS! CD (acute, usa) 14.98usd/7.60gbp/10.16eur/1638jpy (approx)

*restocked… The concept was simple yet unique: marry the post-Stooges guitar aggression of the 'class of 77' punk school with the artsy electronically-processed aesthetic of Roxy Music, Robert Fripp and Brian Eno. The sound: big killer punk rock guitar hooks, squealing textural synth noises, shouted French vocals, and a cheap, adrenalin-fueled drum machine. While most people were just discovering punk, Metal Urbain were blazing the trails for what was to become 'post-punk', with a sound so distinct that Rough Trade would make them their first ever release. Sure, echoes of Metal Urbain can be heard in popular indie bands from the '80s like Big Black and Jesus And Mary Chain, but only now, almost 30 years after their first release, can their genius and foresight be fully appreciated.

DER PLAN- JAPLAN CD (captain trip, japan) 17.98usd/9.12gbp/12.19eur/1967jpy (approx)

MALARIA!- COMPILED 1981-1984 CD (moabit, germany) 15.98usd/8.11gbp/10.83eur/1747jpy (approx)

*restocked… 2001 year release which compiles 16 tracks from all their early releases, originally released 1981-84. Malaria were an all-female art-wave group from Berlin, with connections to Die Haut, Einsturzende, Nina Hagen, Static, etc. A seminal early 80s document. "Contagious diseases, uncertain modes of transmission: Malaria evolved from Mania D., a trio that had already gained a following even without music through their style and artwork. When they expanded into a quintet, they not only retained the first two letters, recurring in medieval, mask, magister artium and mama, they also kept a world of signifiers: heat, illness, fever, ill-defined states. At the time, the beat and the saxophone, which signalled the continuity of both bands, could only be comprehended through inevitable misunderstandings and other contemporary beats and sounds. And -- like an italicised letter -- they incarnated the promise contained in the title: elusive funk, undeveloped jazz, an unresolved and strained insistence on a difference for which no words existed at the time, and certainly no music that one could put a name to." -- Diedrich Diederichsen. Malaria! were: Gudrun Gut, Bettina Koster, Susanne Kuhnke, Christine Han, Manon Duursma.

THIS HEAT- THIS HEAT CD (this is, uk) 18.98usd/9.63gbp/12.87eur/2075jpy (approx)

*restocked… This Heat, the band, emerged in early 1976 on the leading edge of what became the New Wave, but they were always apart, more scary and more subtle. Known as the most left-field, and at the same time most hard-edged, band in all of England, their concerts attracted experimental, punk and new wave audiences alike. Just a handful of performances made them the band everyone had to see, and every journalist had to interview. And the more we knew, the more enigmatic they became. This Heat was a passion. The band worked day-in, day-out for years in their own, now legendary, studio in Brixton (Cold Storage - sited in an old industrial meat refrigerator), or they were away somewhere touring abroad. In this hothouse environment, their material evolved and grew, and became increasingly intense; on the one hand more cuttingly simple, on the other more layered and more dense. When their first LP -- itself several years in the making -- finally appeared on David Cunningham's Piano label in 1979, with its distinctive blue and yellow sleeve, it acquired immediate iconic status. And over time it has also proved itself prescient; there are musical innovations here that anticipate genres that would take another 15 years to reappear. This Heat, the record was a landmark release. It tore up the book and laid new rules for band composition and performance. The music was without precedent; the musicians uncompromising; the recordings hammeringly intense and the sound deep, radical, and rich. This was music stripped back to the bone but never simplified. And it hasn't aged. The later CD version of the LP has now been out of print for some fourteen years (and is currently fetching $300-$350 second-hand), so this edition, the first on the new This Is label, re-mastered and repackaged by the group, will be doubly welcome. It is the first of a series of historical This Heat re-editions and unpublished works by the band to be released on this dedicated label.

METRO AREA- METRO AREA 7 12” (environ, usa) 9.98usd/5.04gbp/6.79eur/1093jpy (approx)

*restocked… Another two years have passed since Metro Area last shook up the scene with a 12", and it is with great pleasure that Environ presents the latest outing from Morgan Geist & Darshan Jesrani: Metro Area 7. This release finds Metro Area continuing on their quest for fresh sounds and timeless production, expanding the compositional palette while retaining the emotional spirit of their early influences. Metro Area have pushed themselves to once again make heartfelt, personal music that stands out from what the rest of the dance music pack is doing and the duo feel this EP is their strongest work since the release of their 2002 self-titled album. 'Read My Mind' is the first full-on vocal track to actually be released by Metro Area (they had amassed a small catalog of unreleased vocal tracks since starting the project). Featuring the incredible pipes of Philip Owusu (of Ubiquity Records' Owusu & Hannibal), 'Read My Mind' is a dynamic boogie romp full of contrast: sweet yet melancholy, warm yet raw. It harkens back to the days where songwriting and arrangement still had a place in dance music and we hope you'll love it. And for the beat purists, there's an irresistible 'RMM Special Dub' version -- perfect for doubles! Flipping to the B-side yields 'Erodyne' -- an incredible space-disco epic that rocks time and space, looking forward with angular arpeggiated riffs and futurist moods while anchored by an undeniably D.I.S.C.O. groove.

MORGAN GEIST- MOST OF ALL 12” (environ, usa) 9.98usd/5.04gbp/6.79eur/1093jpy (approx)

*With Morgan Geist`s last solo 12" four years ago, it`s a bit of an understatement to say that a new solo undertaking from the Environ bossman is overdue. Better late than never: we present to you the new 12" from the Mr. Geist, Most of All, featuring Jeremy Greenspan from Junior Boys. The song "Most of All" is the result of Geist`s increasing obsession with songwriting and arrangement being coupled with a fixation on epic, purely-electronic albums and library records. Geist decided on a purely electronic direction for "Most of All," spurred on in large part by the collaboration with Junior Boys main man Jeremy Greenspan, a like-minded lover of great electronic bands (favorites including YMO, Japan, and TalkTalk) and...well, yes, disco. With Greenspan`s unique voice floating over Geist`s highly-detailed production, the result is part romantic standard, part lost new wave memories, part space-disco and part something unknown and unfamiliar. The B1 instrumental version on the flip streamlines the arrangement into something fit for the floor, yet retains the essence of the song within. Finally, the second B-side track "Skyblue Pink" is Geist`s homage to memories of summer days in the 70s spent listening to synth-rock in his older brother`s room. With all things Balearic and cosmic currently the rage among discerning diggers, now seemed like the right time to drop Skyblue Pink!

KELLEY POLAR- CHRYSANTHEM 12” (environ, usa) 9.98usd/5.04gbp/6.79eur/1093jpy (approx)

*Chrysanthemum EP is the first new recording from Kelley Polar since his hugely successful debut album released in 2005, Love Songs of The Hanging Gardens. This EP continues his unique take on pop music and includes an extended and radical B-side rework (exclusive to this EP) for DJs and dancefloors. This EP precedes a brand-new album from Mr. Polar. The seeds of 'Chrysanthemum' are described by Mr. Polar himself as a confluence of the apocalyptic fear that permeated all Cold War childhoods, comic-book illustrations of blood and violence abstracted into flora and a B-grade science fiction novel's portraying two teens in the final throes of lovemaking as the world is destroyed in nuclear apocalypse. Yet despite this decidedly dark and unique approach, the song is nevertheless pure pop: catchy and indelible once heard. 'Rosenband' is lighter in subject matter yet just as deep musically, filled with synthetic layers and rhythms that reveal themselves slowly on subsequent listens. Despite the immediacy of the melodies, there is a detail that permeates all of Kelley Polar's work and rewards the attentive listener. A completely reworked instrumental version of 'Rosenband' is stretched across the B-side and is -- dare we say it -- a dancefloor killer, with a long, mix-friendly intro building to an incredible crescendo. The track is arranged and mixed by Morgan Geist and was done so with DJs in mind!

SAMMY BANANAS- HIGH TOP FADES 12” (fool’s gold, usa) 9.98usd/5.04gbp/6.79eur/1093jpy (approx)

COBBLESTONE JAZZ- THE CREATOR 12” (itiswhatitis, usa) 11.98usd/6.07gbp/8.12eur/1311jpy (approx)

*top quality/club friendly techno jazz fusion.

LOWFOUR- STENMARK 12” (kupei musika, usa) 8.98usd/4.53gbp/6.11eur/983jpy (approx)

*This 12-inch pairs two Lowfour originals (both named after ‘70s skiers) with two remixes of the title track by Hässleholm-natives Andreas Hörlén (Future/Past Productions) and Stefan Thor (Folie/Tomi Kiiosk).
Though click-house textures are clearly evident in the “Stenmark” original, the primary focus is groove, specifically a pile-driving shuffle stomp Tilliander kickstarts with jittery electro hiccups throughout.
In his 'Tomii Kiosk' remix,' Thor takes the track on a funkier tech-house jaunt while Hörlén stokes a magnificent retro-electro-house broil in his wonderful overhaul. More minimal by comparison, Tilliander strips “Wassberg” to an electro groove core that determinedly burbles and pounds. If Stenmark offers ample evidence of Tilliander's texturally layered style, it's still infectious club-oriented material above all else.

KATE SIMKO- STRUMM 12” (kupei musika, usa) 8.98usd/4.53gbp/6.11eur/983jpy (approx)

*This 12" EP displays Kate Simko's talents at her best: deep, minimal techno full of subtle sounds, micro textures and ethereal melodies. Combining her musical training (Kate’s a classical pianist) with a love for underground music, Kate is continually exploring the dialogue between classical tradition and electronic music - her two strongest influences.
For this release Kupei has enlisted the talents of Europe’s finest soundsmiths, giving Kate Simko the royal treatment: it features two remixes by critically-acclaimed producers Jonas Bering (Kompakt) and UNAI (Disco, Inc).
Artists ranging from John Tejada and Thomas Brinkman to minimalist composer Phillip Glass have shown an interest for Simko’s sound; Phillip Glass even hand-picked Kate for his album “Glasscuts: Phillip Glass remixed.” Reflecting her diverse and extensive background, Kate's music possesses a harmonic, structural and spatial depth usually limited to classical compositions that brings strength to her live performances and promises to trigger progressions in the minimal techno scene.

ANDREAS HORLEN- KAMPRAD 12” (kupei musika, usa) 8.98usd/4.53gbp/6.11eur/983jpy (approx)

*Andreas Hörlén, also known under the moniker Future/Past Productions, is one of Sweden's most gifted producer/electronic musicians. He has contributed to the Swedish music scene for the past 20 years, working as a producer, musician and remix artist with the biggest names in Scandinavian techno: Håkan Lidbo, Andreas Tilliander, Sophie Rimheden, and Son of Kite, just to name a few. Andreas also contributed to Kupei's first 12" with his magnificent electro remix of Lowfour's "Stenmark".
This 12" EP shows Andreas' love for shuffled beats and electro house. As with all of Kupei's releases, this special limited edition includes two remixes, one by Scandinavian glitch-god Stefan Thor (a.k.a. Folie, Tomi Kiiosk) and the other from the notorious Andreas Tilliander (a.k.a. Lowfour).

CRYSTAL FAKE- FROSTY MONDAY SESSIONS 12” (kupei musika, usa) 8.98usd/4.53gbp/6.11eur/983jpy (approx)

*This new 12" on Kupei, aptly titled "Frosty Monday Sessions," present us with two exceptional (and exclusive) Crystal Fake cuts: "Frostbite Freenite" and "Monday After." Both tracks are sexy tech-house offerings that kick and throb like prime French house. To top it off, frequent Kupei contributor Unai provides a fabulous rendition of "Monday After," featuring vocoder-vocals of Unai himself – possibly one of his best remixes so far. A fun digital disco oriented release that is not to be missed!

ANDRES BUCCI- CHOCOPANDA 12” (kupei musika, usa) 8.98usd/4.53gbp/6.11eur/983jpy (approx)

*andreas bucci is back on Kupei! Hailing from Santiago de Chile – Andrés Bucci (along with his brother Pier, Luciano, Ricardo Villalobos and Dandy Jack) is one of the forefront figures of the thriving Chilean electronic music scene. He has worked with some of the finest producers, including techno luminaries The Black Dog, while introducing electro to Chilean audiences. This EP pairs him with Perlon’s comeback kid DANDY JACK on remix duties. It is a strong follow-up to his 2005 critically-acclaimed EP "Don Julio's Converseria" with brother Pier Bucci (on Canadian label Cynosure). It also marks Andres’ third release for Kupei, upholding a steady output of distinctive quality music started with “Hello Donee” (as Detalles). "Chocopanda” presents us with two playful minimal techno offerings: "Get Down" and "Sentinel." Both tracks are bouncy 4/4 techno stripped-down with glitchy sounds, short melodic elements and tiny rhythmic patterns. Dandy Jack’s B-side remake of “Get Down” takes us to the harder side of techno, macro sort of speak – his track is heavier and more intense, with a hard kick drum stomp that can workout the crowd while keeping the minimal aesthetic he is known for.

FLAVIUS E- INDICIOS 12” (kupei musika, usa) 8.98usd/4.53gbp/6.11eur/983jpy (approx)

*For the past 15 years, Flavio Etcheto (aka Flavius E) has contributed to the Argentinean music scene as a producer, musician and remixer. He has worked with some of the finest labels and played at renowned electronic music festivals Sonar Barcelona and Mutek.CL Valparaiso. Now his first solo EP for Kupei Musika, Indicios, presents us with four tech house and minimal techno tracks. This is a sophisticated dancefloor-oriented juggernaut that shows Flavio's meticulous arranging system. Bouncy tech house, Latin style syncopation on the click sounds, gyrating dubby basslines and a pulsating kick drum shuffled hard. Features an exclusive remix by Andres Bucci.

JONAS BERING & KATE SIMKO- CITYSCAPE 12” (kupei musika, usa) 8.98usd/4.53gbp/6.11eur/983jpy (approx)

*Following two remixes for Kupei last year, Jonas Bering returns and joins forces with Chicago techno darling, Kate Simko to present Cityscape, a new EP that blends Bering's emotive style with Simko's Midwest roots and Latin-influenced percussion. Jonas Bering kicks off with 'Take My Hand.' His track, influenced by Gainsbourg, floats on a cloud of hypnotic vibraphone melodies, over a dub house aesthetic filled with a deep bass and ambient drone. Kate Simko follows with 'Cityscape,' which presents us with a tasteful contrasting direction; her track's morphing Detroit synth and classic percussion result in a unique, soulful blend. It is a brilliant follow-up to critically-acclaimed Strumm. On the B-side, we are delighted with two fantastic remixes. Simko's version of 'Take My Hand' shifts the original emotive track into the dancefloor arena. Adding bleeps, groovy bass notes and disco violins to Bering's stunning melodies, the track is a playful take on the original. Bering then returns the favor with his remix of 'Cityscape,' a deconstructed melody and truncated bass line lays the foundation for a sparse arrangement to complete the EP.

GREEN VELVET- TEMPTATION 12” (relief, usa) 8.98usd/4.53gbp/6.11eur/983jpy (approx)

*Hard edged a-side with a grating vocal treatment that sounds like it's blaring out of a phone receiver, should have those Velvet fans panting with disgust. B-side gets down to some serious percolating, should have been the a-side, classic relentless Green Velvet attack.

*One of the hottest club tunes of 2006 receives some proper remix treatment from some Chicago catz who know a thing or two about the dancefloor.
