PICKS OF THE WEEK
LARSSON- RUANDA 12" (rotary cocktail, germany)
12.98usd/6.95gbp/8.77eur/1425jpy (approx)
*Includes Reboot & Markus Fix (Oslo/Cecille) remixes! For lovers of Villalobos, Hawtin & Luciano… In 1994, from the 7th of April until mid-July between 500,000 and one million people in Rwanda were slaughtered in a genocide that took place against the background of a civil war. The Red Cross works to trace and reunite families thrust apart by the tragic events that shaped Rwanda and the region since 1994. We will support the Red Cross by donating all the money gathered with our project Ruanda. (rc)
THE SAVAGES- BLACK SCORPIO LP (shadoks, germany)
46.98usd/25.16gbp/31.74eur/5160jpy (approx)
*The Savages recorded Black Scorpio, the rarest album from India, in Bombay 1973. Beside another live album this is the only album they did. An original of this beauty has been recently sold on eBay for over $3000. This heavy garage band with great musical potential, is as good as the best tracks from the well-known albums of the Simla Beat compilations. Heavy fuzz-guitar, organ, tough vocals, driving beats, wailing guitars -- Doorsy feeling all over. Some original songs and lots of good cover versions in India style underground. The original album came out with a die-cut gimmick sleeve, so this reissue has the same gimmick sleeve.
HARD ROCK AND PSYCHEDELIC
THE PEACE- BLACK POWER CD (groovie, spain)
18.98usd/10.17gbp/12.82eur/2084jpy (approx)
*shop favorite now in stock on cd… The Peace were an obscure band from Copperbelt, Zambia. According to some rumors, they were in fact a band from the Zambian Air Force. Before they became The Peace the band was called The Boyfriends, a popular local band featuring Ted Makombe and Emmanuel Chanda from another legendary band from Zambia, The Witch. Recorded at Malachite Studios, Chingola in the mid '70s, Black Power is one of the rarest psych-rock records ever released in Africa. Killer afro-psychedelic rock sound, the missing piece from the weird and amazing African afro-rock '70s puzzle along with other rare as hell records like The Witch, Amanaz and Question Mark. Limited, first time ever reissue with only 500 copies in papersleeve mini-LP replica.
AMANAZ- AFRICA LP (shadoks, germany)
46.98usd/25.16gbp/31.74eur/5160jpy (approx)
*From Zambia, Africa, 1975. LP in an edition of 450 numbered copies, with glossy heavy sleeve, 180 gram pressing. Amanaz was formed in 1973. Three songs are in the native language Bemba, and 9 songs in English, recorded in Kitwe, the 3rd biggest city in Zambia up north. Musically, it goes in the same direction as Blo, The Witch and Question Mark, but this album is way cooler and stoned with amazing fuzz guitar all over which sounds like an African version of early Cream. The cover makes it look very traditional but after a few spins, you are aware that this one is very special. It's so cool, so tightly-produced and easily compares with UK underground albums with a touch of African beats. Still completely unknown, so this album has not been scored yet by the collectors' scene. A real surprise.
LIVERPOOL- POR FAVOR, SUCESSO/MARCELO ZONA SUL LP/7" (shadoks, germany)
46.98usd/25.16gbp/31.74eur/5160jpy (approx)
*Liverpool is one of our favorite bands from Brazil. The LP Por Favor, Sucesso ('Please, Success') comes together with the ultra-rare 7 inch EP Marcelo Zona Sul, a Brazilian movie from 1970 (you can watch a film-clip on Youtube). This flower power art rock album stands out among the other Brazilian psych albums. It is as good as Modolu 1000 but with better composed songs, influenced by the British Underground, with great guitars, Hammond, effects, complex compositions, uplifting vocals with lots of soul, Allman Brothers style wailing guitars, wah-wah, sometimes sweet and mellow, sometimes extra heavy psychedelic -- all with a great touch of Brazilian music. Perhaps one of the best albums from South America. All original tracks -- 19 in total (including the 6 EP tracks). Enjoy this one.
SOFT ROCK AND LIGHT PSYCHEDELIC HARMONY
WANDA DE SAH- SOFTLY! CD (rev-ola, uk)
18.98usd/10.17gbp/12.82eur/2084jpy (approx)
*Before there was the amazingly successful Brasil '66, there was the experimental pop/bossa nova project Brasil '65, starring Sergio Mendes, and fronted by two amazing young singer/guitarists, Wanda de Sah and Rosinha de Valenca and the acclaim heaped on them for their live performances and albums led Mendes to abandon the byways of jazz for the greener pastures of Brasil '66. In 1966, just as this original pop bossa sensation was disbanding, Sinatra's producer David Cavanaugh signed Wanda to Capitol Records and made this beautiful, relaxing and erotic album. Sympathetically arranged by the seemingly unlikely figure of Munsters theme composer, Jack Marshall (but let us not forget his stunning arrangement of Peggy Lee's 'Fever'), it drew its repertoire from some of the most cutting-edge young Brazilian composers, all wrapped in an amazing soundtrack-like production, with Wanda's voice -- a thing of beauty in itself -- leading it all. Promoted originally as 'The real Girl From Ipanema' (because she was!) Wanda was a sensation. All in all, a wonderful album.
PUNK AND POST-PUNK
PINK REASON- WINONA 7” (woodsist, usa)
6.98usd/3.74gbp/4.72eur/766jpy (approx)
*During a show with hardcore punks Hatefuck, DeBroux and company traveled to Winona, Minnesota. After a five-hour drive to the town, wasted locals, angry punks and gnarled three-legged dogs greeted them by leading them into a commandeered park. Inside the park, DeBroux found 'the ultimate punk rock experience' with townies huffing rubber glue and mohawk-brandishing kids starting fights with crusties. The show ended and the locals gave the band three dollars for their troubles. A few kids asked DeBroux and company to chip in the three dollars on a keg. Soon, the crowd dispersed and left the band with no money or place to stay. The band wound up sleeping on an island between Minnesota and Wisconsin and breaking up soon thereafter. He wrote the first Pink Reason song, 'Winona,' about this experience.'" --Steve Kobak from Blastitude #25
VIVIAN GIRLS- TELL THE WORLD 7” (woodsist, usa)
6.98usd/3.74gbp/4.72eur/766jpy (approx)
*Irresistible mix of shoegaze, punk, and '60s girl-group sounds with beautiful reverb-drenched vocals. Features three self-recorded tracks of lo-fi goodness. First press of 1,000 on black vinyl.
CRYSTAL STILTS- CRYSTAL STILTS LP (woodsist, usa)
14.98usd/8.02gbp/10.12eur/1645jpy (approx)
*Compiles their s/t 12" and the Shattered Shine 7". 6 tracks. "Crystal Stilts started in Brooklyn in 2003 as Brad Hargett and JB Townsend. Not really trying to be a 'band' they recorded and self-released their single Shattered Shine on their Feathery Tongue label in '04 with friend Sean Mafucci (producer of Gang Gang Dance, Psychic Ills, Kid Congo Powers, etc.) Early on, the Stilts played randomly in NYC opening for acts like Blood on the Wall, The Broke Revue, Cause Co-motion, and Psychic Ills. The single spent 7 weeks in WNYU's top 30 and peeked its little fuzzy head out in college radio charts around the country. With no shortage of lazy Jesus and Mary Chain and Factory Records comparisons, (more like VU, Felt, and Blue Orchids) in 2005-2006, they continued to play in New York with bands such as the Long Blondes, 1990s and The Monochrome Set and recorded a 4-song EP. Kyle Forrester (Ladybug Transistor etc., etc.) joined them at gigs playing organ as well. After a brief hiatus to record their back catalog for an upcoming LP (Slumberland), they adopted Andy Adler (who played bass on Eric Copeland of Black Dice's fuzz-pop outfit, Ninjas) to rock the bass. After opening for The Clean in November, Frankie Rose (Vivian Girls) waltzed into their life to play the stand-up drums and complete the equation.
FOLK, BLUES AND ROOTS
JACK ROSE- KENSIGNTON BLUES CD (beautiful happiness, uk)
12.98usd/6.95gbp/8.77eur/1425jpy (approx)
*restocked… uk version of this jack rose essential.
JACK ROSE- KENSIGNTON BLUES LP (vhf, usa)
15.98usd/8.56gbp/10.80eur/1755jpy (approx)
*budget line version of one of jack rose’s masterworks, in stock for the first time... despite revolver distributions one-sheet claims, this is in fact a reissue. the original was a limited run of 500 housed in a super nice black on black printed sleeve released by, ahem, tequila sunrise. either way, it’s an essential release and one no discerning record collection should be without.
JACK ROSE- TWO ORIGINALS OF CD (vhf, usa)
12.98usd/6.95gbp/8.77eur/1425jpy (approx)
*restocked… The debut solo CD by Jack Rose combines his much-lauded Eclipse LPs Red Horse, White Mule and Opium Musick. While the former is generally recognized as inspired by the Takoma tradition, Rose adds his own exotic influences and recognizable touch-- whether abstracting on the modal epic "Red Horse" or the rough slide stylings of "The Colonel's Blues." The latter is an eclectic collection with pieces for 12-string (the percussive and dark "Black Pearls"), 6-string, and lap guitar. The two tracks featuring the lap guitar are duets. The lovely raga-ish "Yaman Blues" features Pelt's Mike Gangloff on tanpura, and the near-ragtime of "Linden Ave Stomp" features Glenn Jones of Cul de Sac on his vintage Gibson. The 12-page booklet reproduces the liner notes from both LPs and adds a few snaps.
V/A- WOODEN GUITAR CD (locust, usa)
12.98usd/6.95gbp/8.77eur/1425jpy (approx)
*restocked… A simple title with a simple concept. Wooden Guitar is an inspired excursion into the creases and folds of modern deltadelica & a thinly veiled homage to the great Takoma compilations of yore (remember that great Kottke, Lang, Fahey collection?) where guitarists could sit back, work those muscles in their fingers and go the extra musical distance. Four of the great worldwide guitarists -- Germany's Steffen Basho-Junghans, Seattle's Sir Richard Bishop (the Sun City Girls), Japan's Tetuzi Akiyama & Virginia's Jack Rose give us a fresh look at a very old instrument with gloriously stretched out solo compositions.
JACK ROSE- DR. RAGTIME AND HIS PALS/JACK ROSE 2CD (tequila sunrise, usa)
14.98usd/8.02gbp/10.12eur/1645jpy (approx)
*Domestic version of Jack Rose's recent full length, Dr. Ragtime And His Pals, coupled with a reissue of last year's self-titled CD/LP housed in a custom designed and fabricated off-set printed card cover with j-card style obi (there is also a jewel case version on the UK label Beautiful Happiness). Limited edition of 1000…The Appalachian Trail runs 2175 miles south from Mount Katahdin in Maine to Springer Mountain in Georgia, though there are those who want to stretch it further, into Alabama, because the mountains go there. Why not extend it? Trails are made for that. But there's another Appalachian Trail, too -- one that goes through time, extending from unfinished studios in Williamsburg, NY, winding down the grooves of ancient 78s to the 1920s or even earlier, past Stephen Foster's wet dream to a place beyond the compass of change. If you're hiking on *that* trail, you're likely to run into a lot of post-grad Parsifals with inscrutable hair and de-tuned banjos -- these days, you can't swing a cat around without hitting one! But if you're lucky, you might stumble across a clearing somewhere south of Lily Dale, where revolutionists stop for orangeade and Dr. Ragtime hangs out with his pals. If you ask him politely, he might offer you a taste of his elixir -- made from codeine, sarsaparilla, and goat-gland extract -- guaranteed to restore memories that never were. And if you're quiet, he might let you stay and listen to the music: Ethiopian novelties, characteristic marches and parlor favorites -- bittersweet slices of Methodist pie, familiar tunes, at least in those sections where the square dance has not yet been supplanted by the fox-trot. And if you have a couple of dimes to rub together in your pocket, you'll want to purchase his newest, electrically-recorded phonograph recording, entitled Doctor Ragtime And His Pals. The Doctor, who hitherto has recorded only on his own, is joined here by Micah Blue Smaldone (who has been compared to both Tiny Tim and Kierkegaard), Glenn Jones (of Cul de Sac, last seen around these parts urging college students to contemplate the prospect of their own death on a balmy September evening), Michael Gangloff (late of Pelt and the Black Twig Pickers), Nathan Bowles (also of the Black Twig Pickers as well as the Spiral Joy Band) and the mysterious Harmonica Dan (from Pennsauken, New Jersey by way of ethereal caminos). This release is conjoined with a recording by Jack Rose, the Mike Morgan of the American minimalist neo-primitive sub-underground. This recording, entitled Jack Rose -- previously available to the buying public only in severely limited forms -- is here presented as a bonus to the consumer and perhaps as an act of folly for the producer.
GLOBAL
V/A- INGOSI STARS: LANGONI CD (daqui, france)
21.98usd/11.77gbp/14.85eur/2414jpy (approx)
*The Luhya people originate in the Western province of Kenya, but many of them have migrated to large towns, and in particular to Nairobi. Music has always been an essential component of Luhya social life, with a distinct repertoire reserved for each occasion (births, circumcisions, weddings, funerals) or played for sheer entertainment. Playing on typical Luhya instruments, Mzee William Ingosi Mwoshi and his son, Jackson Amusala, are among today's best 'neo-traditionalists' -- a generation of Kenyan musicians who mastered the traditions of the rural areas and were able to transform them for a changing society, so that the old genres would still make sense for people both in the villages and in the towns.
THE GREEN ARROWS- 4 TRACK RECORDING SESSION 2LP (open house, germany)
29.98usd/16.06gbp/20.26eur/3292jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… 2LP version of the CD which has been out for awhile on the Analog Africa label. Deluxe gatefold packaging, with large-scale 12 page booklet of notes/photos inside. The Green Arrows, led by the immortal Zexie Manatsa, dominated the Zimbabwean music scene in the 1970s. This extraordinarily progressive group took the country by storm, fusing the different rhythms of the region into one unique and ebullient sound. This compilation presents 20 critical tracks that The Green Arrows recorded from 1974-1979, all painstakingly remastered. Carefully prepared liner notes are absolutely overflowing with a complete history of the band (edited by renowned critic Banning Eyre), a full detailed discography, and numerous extremely rare photographs and artifacts.
BASSEKOU KOUYATE & NGONI BA- SEGU BLUE 2LP (open house, germany)
29.98usd/16.06gbp/20.26eur/3292jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Double LP version; CD version is on the Out Here label. Segu Blue introduces the first solo album from Malinese ngoni player, Bassekou Kouyate. Ngoni is the Bambara name for an ancient traditional lute found throughout West Africa that is plucked with the thumb, much like a 5-stringed banjo. Bassekou was born in a village called Garana about 60 kilometers from Segu, in the remote countryside on the banks of the Niger River. He was raised in a traditional musical environment, his mother a praise singer and his father and brothers exceptional ngoni players. He moved to Bamako when he was 19 years old where he met the young Toumani Diabate. By the late 1980s, Bassekou was part of Toumani's trio and they recorded their first albums together, Songhai and Djelika. Bassekou has collaborated with many musicians in and outside of Mali. He played in the Symmetric trio with Toumani Diabate on kora and Keletigui Diabate on balafon. He was part of the Kulanjan project recorded with Taj Mahal. He is one of the key musicians on Ali Farka Toure's posthumous album Savane which was released July 2006. Now he has put together his own band: Ngoni Ba; the big ngoni: Mali's first ngoni quartet. The ngoni is one of Africa's still-undiscovered secrets: it is the key instrument for Griot culture. Unlike the kora, whose history goes back only a few hundred years, the ngoni has been the main instrument in Griot storytelling way back into the days of Sundiata Keita. The repertoire Bassekou plays is from the region of Segu, the heart of Bambara culture. Unlike mandenka griot music, Bambara music is pentatonic in nature -- music as close to the blues as you can get in Africa. Segu Blue features artists Kassemady Diabate, Lobi Traore, Lassana Diabate and singer Zoumana Tereta. By the way, there is no kora or djembe on the album. Taj Mahal describes Bassekou as "a genius, a living proof that the blues comes from the region of Segu.

V/A- MOLAM: THAI COUNTRY GROOVE FROM ISAN CD (sublime frequencies, usa)
17.98usd/9.63gbp/12.15eur/1974jpy (approx)
*more sublime frequencies back catalog titles in stock for the first time… 2007 repress. Molam is a multi-faceted folk music native to Laos and the predominantly rural Northeastern region of Thailand known as Isan -- home to myriad ethnic groups and provinces, and once a part of present-day Laos. Mo meaning 'master' and lam meaning 'song', molam literally translates into 'master singer', but it remains more of an umbrella term covering over a dozen types of lam styles in which male and female singers can be backed by a free-reed bamboo mouth organ called a khaen, indigenous lute-like instruments (the phin or the soong), a bowed fiddle called a sor and a percussion ensemble featuring finger cymbals and hand drums. Lam phun and lam sing are the two molam styles featured most prominently in this collection. Also in the musical family is look thoong, a slower, more tragic style, usually lamenting lost love and perpetual poverty. Examples are heard on tracks 10, 15 and 20. Costumed Isan comedy troupes called Talok incorporate hyper-eccentric molam and look thoong renditions with low, vaudevillian comedy and high social satire on stages and TVs throughout the country. Maniacal examples are heard on tracks 2, 8 and 11. The classic recordings featured here are selections from rare vinyl LPs, 45s and cassettes recorded in Isan and beyond between the 1970s and 1980s. This was a pivotal time when music of the region began to be electrified and integrated with Western instruments. When electric bass, effected guitars, electric organs, kit drums and horns played alongside the khaen and the phin. Molam had never sounded this way before -- and due to the typically ephemeral nature of the music industry and the introduction of the modern keyboard workstation, molam will never sound like this again.
V/A- MOLAM: THAI COUNTRY GROOVE FROM ISAN VOL.2 CD (sublime frequencies, usa)
17.98usd/9.63gbp/12.15eur/1974jpy (approx)
*more sublime frequencies back catalog titles in stock for the first time… Molam is a multi-faceted folk country music native to Laos and the collection of rural Northeastern Thai provinces called Isan. Molam is an umbrella term used for numerous lam styles. It literally translates to "expert singer" or "expert song." Featured here in volume 2 of this series are lam phun, lam thuy, lam plern, lam dern and lam sing styles of molam recordings from the 1970s and 1980s. All of these forms are built from a tradition that is centuries-old. A few examples of molam/luk thung (Thailand's national country music) hybrids are also featured here. In the late-1960s, at the onset of molam's modern genesis, electric guitars and organs were introduced alongside the extant folk sounds of the khaen (bamboo mouth-organ) and phin (Thai lute). Hybrid styles were formed with an electrified sound that jived with tradition while creating something entirely new. Much of the music relies on stock formulas, designed primarily to showcase the stylings of various singers from the region. But, as this brilliant collection demonstrates, the rules tend to bend a bit as more adventurous groups experiment with the genre and the production. Sound effects, flamboyant vamping, odd vocal styles or trick intros and finales based on popular rock themes show up now and then, among other playful and dynamic shifts, making for some exceptional listening. So join the folks at Sublime Frequencies in their perpetual and confounding love affair with Thai Isan Molam. Enjoy this rarely-heard music, culled from vintage cassette and vinyl recordings, rescued from the silent places in which they've rested for the past decades.

12.98usd/6.95gbp/8.77eur/1425jpy (approx)
*shop favorite restocked… Shadow Dancer is Paul Farrier from Manchester. In 2007, he produced his first release on Boys Noize Records. Four quality electronica tracks that were found in the DJ bags of Mr. Oizo, Erol Alkan, Feadz or 2ManyDJs. Today he's back with a new smart track called 'Cowbois' which is a cut-up disco hammer with great breaks and an EBM bass line to drive people wild. Forget about any styles that are hot or not, because Shadow Dancer's music is timeless, a dancefloor friendlier version of electronica music. Great remixes come from Das Glow (Institubes) who twisted the original completely into a 4/4 techno machine and that is exactly what we need! Young wizard Strip Steve (BNR) takes out the disco elements of the original and turns it into house music!

18.98usd/10.17gbp/12.82eur/2084jpy (approx)
*Summer is here again, and that means another shining Total compilation from Kompakt. Spread over two CDs, this is the ninth Total, and it marks 15 years of enduring music from Cologne's hardest-working label. 15 years ago, Kompakt came together as a partnership between techno musicians Michael Mayer, Wolfgang Voigt (aka Gas, Mike Ink, M:I:5), Jürgen Paape, and Reinhard Voigt initially as a record shop that today boasts pretty much every service a musician could ever dream of. From their in-house record labels (Kompakt, K2, Kom Ex/Speicher and Kompakt Pop), record shop (digital and physical), distribution hub for over 50 exclusive worldwide labels, recording studios, booking/management agency and so much more, Kompakt strives to keep to its DIY roots by putting music first -- something that is most certainly reflected on this double platter of joyfulness called Total 9. Total 9 looks back at the best musical moments of the past year and looks forward to the future, with some exclusive music you will only find here from the likes of the dynamic duo Supermayer, Jörg Burger aka The Modernist, Freiland (the post-Studio Eins series by Wolfgang Voigt), Kompakt fav Thomas Fehlmann, the always-classic Jürgen Paape, Hamburg's revolutionary and hotly-tipped DJ Koze, electronic disco-master Justus Köhncke, and more. And, if you haven't been regularly stocking your DJ case, you'll find CD versions of Kompakt's usual roster of limited releases that includes tunes from Japan's gentle dub technician, Kaito, Matias Aguayo's catchy "Minimal" that is everything but minimal, a Krautdisco hymn from Partial Arts as well as a dark, soulful number by Gui Boratto, and oh so much more. MISSY DEE & THE MELODY CREW- MISSY MISSY DEE 12" (numero group, usa)
10.98usd/5.88gbp/7.42eur/1206jpy (approx)
*restocked… The seventh in Numero's ongoing 12" series delves even further into archives of New York's Tap label. Missy Dee & the Melody Crew cut this tremendous slice of disco rap in 1981, only hours after fellow Tap-mates the Fabulous 3 MCs went upside down and back again on 'Rub A Dub Dub.' Check the whistle on the instrumental flip for further proof. The original 12" is rare not only for its quantity pressed, but for the quality of the four teenage girl rappers -- nearly unparalleled at the time. While Missy Dee rocked many a block party, Lady T was the real standout, having come up as a member of Kurtis Blow's crew. Her later work as MC Tatiana can be heard on the classic Clockin ZZZZs 12" 'Mission To Rock.' Mastered from the original tapes, including all 8+ minutes of the vocal take, this reissue should take the Melody Crew from rap jesters to hip-hop princesses.
JACKIE STOUDEMIRE- INVISIBLE WIND 12" (numero group, usa)
10.98usd/5.88gbp/7.42eur/1206jpy (approx)
*restocked… The sixth in Numero's ongoing disco 12" series comes from the archives of New York's Tap label. 'Invisible Wind' is just one side of Jackie's lone Tap 12", but we've expanded it with a previously unissued dub (in its original and extended form) and also called on the Shoes (again!) to expand the track into eight glorious and relentless minutes of mod-disco. Housed in our stock disco sleeve for easy crate ID.
JAY MITCHELL- MUSTANG SALLY 12" (numero group, usa)
10.98usd/5.88gbp/7.42eur/1206jpy (approx)
*restocked… The fifth in Numero's ongoing disco 12" series features a track from our recent compilation Cult Cargo: Grand Bahama Goombay. The thirteen minute 'Mustang Sally' is a break heavy reworking of the classic Mack Rice tune, overstuffed with dizzying organ vamps, fuzzy bass, and free form vocals. The flip features a re-edit by LeSpam and a housey remix by the Shoes crew. Housed in our stock disco sleeve for easy crate ID.
FABULOUS 3 MCS- RUB A DUB DUB 12" (numero group, usa)
10.98usd/5.88gbp/7.42eur/1206jpy (approx)
*restocked… The fourth in Numero's ongoing disco 12" series comes from the archives of the Bronx's Tap label. Found on a reel simply marked 'Rub A Dub,' the eight-minute disco-rap achieved classic status on our office stereo within the hour via its infectious whistles, key steps and synth vamps. Included here are the vocal and the extended instrumental, the latter of which is a guaranteed floor filler. Both cuts are previously unreleased and come housed in our stock disco sleeve.
SABATA- MAN FOR MY LADY 12" (numero group, usa)
10.98usd/5.88gbp/7.42eur/1206jpy (approx)
*restocked… 'Man For My Lady' was a semi-custom offering by Sabata, an alias for legendary R&B producer George Kerr. The track is boogie to the B, replete with electro keys and enough 808 to get even the most stapled of wallflowers to bend a knee. The original and edit are both offered here, along with an extended instrumental re-edit by Earwig.
MASTER JAY & MICHAEL DEE- T.S.O.B. 12" (numero group, usa)
10.98usd/5.88gbp/7.42eur/1206jpy (approx)
*restocked… The second and third in Numero's series of disco 12"s come from the T.S.O.B. label, a tiny Brooklyn outfit that operated from 1980-1982. While the label is best known for supplying the infectious horn sample in the Beastie's 'Brass Monkey,' there were a handful of other amazing 12" singles that found a way to avoid the ears of Mike D and company. Master Jay & Michael Dee's 'T.S.O.B.' is a raw slice of discofied rap that has been bootlegged to death over the last decade. Re-mastered for the first time and pressed on 150 gram vinyl, this is the the definitive reissue of a lost New York pre-hop classic.
SHED- SHEDDING THE PAST 2LP (ostgut, germany)
19.98usd/10.70gbp/13.50eur/2194jpy (approx)
*Double LP version. This is the first full-length release for Berlin-based DJ/producer, Shed. The work at hand presents yet another stunning Ostgut Ton acquisition, revealing Shed's irresistible, intense techno sound. Shedding The Past is the culmination of years of continuous Soloaction research, Shed's very own imprint. The recordings fully unfold the total variety in his outstanding crafts of sound. Lineage can be drawn to the Saunderson Detroit sound, Aphex Twin rave and Manix hardcore, sounding like an archive document -- an archaeological history of electronic dance music. Shedding The Past captures the intensity and the purity of club and rave in the early days, without excess nostalgia. Rather, it creates new moments that leave the past behind. Full of energy and vigor, this is true techno music: concentrated and dense, but with a sheer easiness born from eastern Germany. This adeptness has captured the ears of Berghain and Hard Wax ears. As others of his social provenience, Shed took on the opportunities of the early '90s techno culture, which unfolded after the Wall went down, and developed an approach of "just do it." With this easiness in mind, Shedding The Past is just true techno music. Includes an exclusive track, as well as two alternate versions specially crafted for vinyl.
A GUY CALLED GERALD- IN YA HEAD 12” (perlon, germany)
14.98usd/8.02gbp/10.12eur/1645jpy (approx)
*When sonic pioneers collide in an ideal setup within club culture dynamics, they do not just produce dents on the floor, but in fact amalgamate in a pliant way to stretch the space-time continuum by means of enrichment through sound. And knowledge. Here we have such a mighty hook-up: Gerald Simpson is known to be an innovator of electronic dance music. Starting with Manchester-based 808 State in 1988, sparking the fire of Voodoo Ray Acid Soul, measuring the Black Secret Technology jungle, finding the Essence of song-based dance via New York City, he continues pushing evolutionary music processes since taking up residence in Berlin. Now he joins forces with the Perlon visionary community of unfathomable deepness and unrivaled sound design always leaving room for novelty, scientific curiosity and blasting mind frames. On this volume, every element of Gerald's spirited signature can be strongly detected again: his rhythm awareness, the proto acid clonks and bleeps with soul implant, the drum&bass infection, the arcane technology, the essence, the magic, the coolness, the timelessness -- again put into a future focus. The stunning result appears as a revelation of a shiny, blue-black character. 'In Ya Head' is featuring soulmate Mia, former Cologne producer and founder of Sub Static, who dived into the Berlin pool in 2004, the same year as Gerald did. The forward motion of this stealth orbital glider with its elegant lunar sister module is definitely space-, time- and style-expanding.
DISTRICT ONE- HANDSOME/ONE 2 ONE 12” (100% pure, nether)
13.98usd/7.49gbp/9.45eur/1535jpy (approx)
*District One is the live project by Bart Skils and Anton Pieete. In 2005, they joined forces and released their first 12" on the 100% Pure imprint. Ever since then, their releases have been inescapable on the techno scene. This time, the duo brings two deep, rolling techno tracks with an extra dark edge. Both tracks combine current sounds with classic ones, with plenty of straight beats for the techno-tool groove.

WOLFGANG VOIGT- GAS BOOK/CD (raster-noton, germany)
46.98usd/25.16gbp/31.74eur/5160jpy (approx)
*Softcover book/photographic art catalogue with exclusive audio compact disc included, 128 pages in full-color, shrink-wrapped together. For the first time ever, Wolfgang Voigt aka Gas presents the visual aspect of the comprehensive Gas project in print. It is not meant to be a monolithic retrospective of his visual work, but it features a broad spectrum of photographic images taken between 1995 and 1998, showing many different moods and perspectives of Wolfgang Voigt's cosmos. What they all have in common is the mystical focus and seemingly, the blurring of boundaries between lightness and darkness, happiness and depression, kitsch and art, pixels and leaves. With the enclosed CD, Voigt has opened his treasure chest and presents some well-selected, rare jewels from the very early days (and nights). Four of the five tracks have never been released or played before. In the middle of the 1990s, Wolfgang Voigt, better known under a great many pseudonyms such as Mike Ink, Studio1 or Grungerman, and the driving force behind the rise of Cologne minimal techno, had reached a temporary peak in his career. Going back to the 1980s, Voigt began working under a self-realized concept he named "Blei." Taking in the most varied sound models, he began to extract elements from classical, polka, or brass music, and along with electronic pop music and German schlager sounds, formed a distinguished and unique pop music style that would fit in with the subculture at that time. In the early 1990s, influenced by techno, Voigt began to experiment with a timbal marching through strongly alienated, free-floating string loops. These elegiac tracks, their lack of beginning or end, their intoxicating, smooth, and partly amorphous structure sounded to him like evaporating gas and thus, Gas music was born. In his music, Wolfgang Voigt does not create a direct reference to the original sounds he alters; rather, he tries to reduce the material to its basic aesthetic structure by using different zoom, loop and alienation techniques in order to release it from its original meaning and context. His intention is to create a kind of aesthetic essence, a cave (detail/loop/repetition) where you can get thrillingly lost.
