NEW ARRIVALS/RESTOCKS FOR FRIDAY, AUGUST 22

NEW ARRIVALS AND RESTOCKS FRIDAY, AUGUST 22

thanks for looking.

only a handful of new arrivals this week, but a pretty heavy box of restocks! as far as the new arrivals go, well they’re pretty heavy too… two new baris manco lp reissues, a erkin koray compilation lp and a reissue of the debut cem karaka lp. all deluxe and all essential on the revived (and supposedly legit no less) turkuola label. also on the new arrivals front is a couple of texas psych/garage essentials, one of em being this weeks top pick… a killer three disc set compiling odds and ends (and hits) from the great international artists label and a much welcomed cd re-issue of the legendary rockadelic release by cold sun… totally essential (on the equally legendary world in sound label, vinyl forthcoming). the restocks this week are on the light side of the rock spectrum. i don’t know if its because of the recent dennis wilson reissue or the change of the seasons, but soft rock and light psychedelic harmonies have been on constant rotation (and in high demand) around tequila sunrise… i got a bunch of restocked titles from beatball (the canterbury music festival cd being a favorite), fallout (the michelle/saturns rings is essential), rev-ola (fans of dennis wilson/beach boys should get on the mark eric cd… great melancholy west coast pop and a shop fave!) and sundazed (margo guryan lp back in!!!)… plus some fred neil restocks… expect more restocks and new arrivals on the aforementioned labels in the coming weeks. one noticeable absence on this weeks update is in the dance department, but have no fear the next couple of weeks are going to make up for this weeks drought big time!!! come on by and check out the sounds!

gracias

PICK OF THE WEEK

Quite a number of these tracks are here making their CD debut, several not having seen the light of since their first release forty years ago.

HARD ROCK AND PSYCHEDELIC

QUESTION MARK- BE NICE TO THE PEOPLE LP (shadoks, germany)
43.98usd/23.59gbp/29.73eur/4764jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Numbered edition of 450 copies, glossy heavy sleeve with engraved artwork, 180 gram pressing. Question Mark recorded this album in 1974 in Kenya, the land safari parks, of elephants & lions. Five musicians, all English vocals, heavy fuzz guitar, eight freakin' tracks. If you think Blo and Witch were great African albums, you will love this one. It beats most bands from Africa such as Ofege, Chrissy Zebby, Rikki Ililonga and Mack Sigis Porter, unless you are only in African rhythms and chanting. This album has mostly Western-style songs with great and heavy guitar sounds all over but with a strong African touch of course.

CEM KARACA/KARDASLAR- CEM KARACA/KARDAŞLAR LP (turkuola, germany)
31.98usd/17.16gbp/21.61eur/3464jpy (approx)

It is a compilation of his earlier works with the band Kardaslar and 4 works from his previous band Apaslar. The LP is a very good example of Turkish prog psych rock, features a lot of Turkish melodies, and ethnic string instruments.

ERKIN KORAY- SILINMEYEN HATIRALAR LP (turkuola, germany)
31.98usd/17.16gbp/21.61eur/3464jpy (approx)

BARIS MANÇO- BARIS MANÇO LP (turkuola, germany)
31.98usd/17.16gbp/21.61eur/3464jpy (approx)

COLD SUN- DARK SHADOWS CD (world in sound, germany)
24.98usd/13.40gbp/16.88eur/2706jpy (approx)

*First time available on CD, Cold Sun from Austin, Texas was recorded in 1970 in the legendary Sonobeat studios, where the Mariani and Johnny Winter first LPs were produced. The Cold Sun band are considered contemporaries of Velvet Underground and The Fugs, often listed as being in a similar vein but inspirations for this unique piece actually go back to the desperate, haunted Joe Meek. All songs lyrically express dark, mystic poetry with the true '60s psychedelic floating/distorted fuzz spirit presented in short compact mini-epics along with several mind blowing long tunes, such as 'Ra-Ma' (11 min.), 'Here In The Year' (9 min.) and 'Fall' (7 min.). Discovered by Rockadelic Records of Dallas, Texas in 1991, the Dark Shadows album saw the light of day the next year as a limited LP version, to become today one of the most important and revered US psychedelic underground albums from the early '70s. Rockadelic heard it in the form of an old scratchy acetate that one of the Cold Sun band members had made in order to be able to play the recording at friends` parties on their turntables. The acetate only contained 2/3 of the songs but so greatly impressed them that Rockadelic managed together with bandleader Bill Miller to release the complete sessions from master tapes. Autoharp wizard Miller eventually spearheaded Roky Erickson's international debut as the Cold Sun band joined forces with Roky in 1974 and became BliebAlien, later evolved into The Aliens and backed Roky on his famous albums and historical concerts. Carefully remastered from the master tapes, this album will bring new rewarding listening experiences in expanded fidelity, plus 2 unreleased non-album songs, authentic Live/Concert recordings of 'Live Again' (10 min.) and 'Mind Aura' (7 min.). The fidelity of these reel to reel live recordings is also remarkable. The CD and Vinyl issues will both have an extended booklet/insert with liner notes by Jello Biafra plus rare photos and other surprises. According to Patrick (Lama) Lundborg from Lysergia.com: 'Best Rockadelic LP ever, and in my opinion the best Texas LP of the time.' Enjoy this ONE-HOUR psychedelic Happening, a 'must-have' '60s/'70s heavy uber-psych masterpiece!

SOFT ROCK AND LIGHT PSYCHEDELIC HAMONY

THE CANTERBURY MUSIC FESTIVAL- RAIN & SHINE CD (beatball, korea)
21.98usd/11.79gbp/14.86eur/2381jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… limited CD issue is the sole album of The Canterbury Music Festival only 150 copies were pressed in 1968. The album has an almost willfully secret pop-sike masterpiece of sorts.... on the obscure and collectable BT Puppy label owned by the legendary doo wopper Tokens. This album contains the complete BT Puppy recordings, and is one of the rarest albums in the entire collectable Soft Rock genre! Beatball reissue CD carrying better clean sound in ever! Also this set contains newly extensive liner notes featuring the interview with the original members and rare band photos. Plus the band sticker... this is a must for all fans of soft rock & good time music lovers.

MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING- IN WONDERLAND CD (beatball, korea)
21.98usd/11.79gbp/14.86eur/2381jpy (approx)

*restocked… The first official output of this obscured 60s band the Mutual Understanding who created a sound somewhere betwixt Free Design, Eternity's Children, Association, Small Circle of Friends, and Harpers Bizarre. Their sole album In Wonderland was originally released on Nimbus 9 in 1968. In Wonderland is an obscured pop-psych masterpiece from Canada, this recording were presented jointly by the legendary Canadian independent label Nimbus 9 Productions and the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) at that time. The Mutual Understanding combines the musical talents of the great Canadian musicians; Ben McPeek, Jimmy Dale and Jerry Toth, with the clever and innovative vocal stylings of Canada's top vocal group, the Laurie Bower Singers. The album captures a unique post psychedelic musical moment in time that enchants with its own flavor.

WALTER RAIM CONCEPT- ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES CD (beatball, korea)
21.98usd/11.79gbp/14.86eur/2381jpy (approx)

*restocked… A long waited US soft rock masterpiece re-issue. First released on MTA Records in 1970, it features the original cover art and 11 tracks. As a composer, guitarist and arranger Walter Raim's outstanding album. Produced by Bob Thompson, genius for arranging '60s lounge/space age pop scene (ex. Roger Nichols, Van Dyke Parks and Harpers Bizarre).

THE TOKENS- INTERCOURSE: EXPANDED EDITION CD (beatball, korea)
21.98usd/11.79gbp/14.86eur/2381jpy (approx)

*restocked, deluxe korean version… From the depths of the legendary BT Puppy vaults (a label which seems to have as many lost albums as they had hits!) the very daddies of softpop The Tokens! Though The Tokens are best remembered for their international smash hit 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight,' recently revived in The Lion King, they did much more. Producers, writers, publishers and label owners, they had a long string of hits in all those roles. Intercourse is a full-on softpop song cycle, inexplicably turned down by their then-label Warner Brothers, and released in an edition of 200 copies on their own BT Puppy label for contractual reasons. Far from their Doo-Wop roots, The Tokens delivered an album pitched somewhere between Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper's, with all the production and arrangement tricks that implies. No wonder Warners were dumbfounded, and no wonder collectors have been going nuts and paying silly sums for this album ever since! Newly remastered by The Tokens themselves, this is a surprise treat in anyone's language, as The Tokens show not only every cult softpop group, but many superstars just how it's done, with the wicked tongue-in-cheek touch which they were justly famous for.

UNUSUAL WE- UNUSUAL WE CD (beatball, korea)
21.98usd/11.79gbp/14.86eur/2381jpy (approx)

*restocked… Nothing unusual about these guys, because the record's a great batch of Sunshine Pop vocal work -- very much in the best spirit of bigger work from the late 60s! The album's the only one we've ever seen from the group, but it's a real gem through and through -- a great batch of tracks that blends male and female voices together with a wonderfully swirling sort of sound -- supported by arrangements that are full, but never too lush to smother the vocals -- and served up with a nicely groovy sense of rhythm at the bottom! A few tracks have a nice undercurrent of subtle funk -- thanks, no doubt, to production from Harold Battiste. (dg)

FRASER & DEBOLT- WITH IAN GUENTHER LP (fallout, uk)
24.98usd/13.40gbp/16.88eur/2706jpy (approx)

*restocked… Previously reissued on cd by Fallout, now issued on deluxe lp format as well; 180 gram pressing. This beautiful collection of Canadian psych-folk swiftly came and went in 1971, but has since acquired a devoted cult following. A haunting set of self-penned tunes set to esoteric arrangements featuring gloriously unpredictable fiddle-playing, it is sure to delight fans of The Incredible String Band and the Holy Modal Rounders, as well as more recent acts like Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom.

FRIAR TUCK- AND HIS PSYCHEDELIC GUITAR LP (fallout, uk)
24.98usd/13.40gbp/16.88eur/2706jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… An oft-overlooked piece of the L.A. pop-psych jigsaw, this 1967 oddity combines typically complex vocal arrangements by the legendary Curt Boettcher with virtuoso guitar interludes from L.A. session legend Mike Deasy, and features backing from the team responsible for the landmark Millennium and Sagittarius LPs. A truly deranged mixture of cover versions and originals, it's presented here complete with four ultra-rare bonus tracks from non-album 45s, making it an essential purchase for fans of sunshine pop and psychedelia.

KANGAROO- KANGAROO CD (fallout, uk)
17.98usd/9.65gbp/12.15eur/1947jpy (approx)

*restocked… This quirky collection of country-tinged pop-psych from New York City first appeared in 1968, and features the talents of singer Barbara Keith (whose songs have been covered by Barbara Streisand, Delaney & Bonnie, Lowell George and others), John Hall (of '70s hitmakers Orleans) and ND Smart (a member of Mountain and the legendary Great Speckled Bird, who went on to play with Gram Parsons). The band was short-lived, but they opened for acts such as The Doors and The Who, and their sole album makes its long-overdue CD debut here, complete with explanatory liner notes.

PAT KILROY- LIGHT OF DAY LP (fallout, uk)
24.98usd/13.40gbp/16.88eur/2706jpy (approx)

*restocked… This highly original 1966 collection, originally released by Elektra Records, has been called the first acid folk record of all time. Certainly its hippy themes and exotic instrumentation are well ahead of their time, but Kilroy died tragically young and his album has largely been neglected ever since, despite featuring legendary guitarist Stefan Grossman. A must for all fans of psychedelic singer-songwriters.

MICHAELANGELO- ONE VOICE MANY CD (fallout, uk)
17.98usd/9.65gbp/12.15eur/1947jpy (approx)

*restocked… This lost classic finally makes its CD debut here. Led by the aptly named Angel, the band only recorded one album, which has become one of the best-loved folk-rock albums of its era. Recorded in New York and produced by longtime Wendy Carlos collaborator Rachel Elkind, it's a haunting collection of autoharp-led pop songs, boasting strong melodies and powerful electric guitar, but sold poorly on release in 1971, causing the band to splinter.

MICHELE- SATURN RINGS CD (fallout, uk)
17.98usd/9.65gbp/12.15eur/1947jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Michele O'Malley's sole album is an unfairly neglected West Coast folk-psych gem. Featuring the involvement of cult legends such as Curt Boettcher (Sagittarius, Millennium), Lowell George (Little Feat) and Elliott Ingber (Mothers of Invention, Captain Beefheart), it's a dreamy collection of Eastern-influenced West Coast folk/jazz-pop matched with Michele's lilting vocals that deserved to sell much better upon its original release in 1969.

REBECCA AND THE SUNNYBROOK FARMERS- BIRTH CD (fallout, uk)
17.98usd/9.65gbp/12.15eur/1947jpy (approx)

*restocked… This eclectic blend of folk, pop, jazz and acid rock originally appeared in the U.S. in 1969 on the Musicor label, and now it makes its long-overdue CD debut here. Boasting no less than three female singers in its lineup, the band played ballads, pop songs and freaky psychedelic rock, set to complex arrangements incorporating electric guitar, violin and sitar. Despite gigging with acts such as The Lemon Pipers, Jethro Tull, Alice Cooper, and Blood, Sweat and Tears, they didn't break through, leaving behind only this neglected gem.

WILKINSON TRI-CYCLE- WILKINSON TRI-CYCLE CD (fallout, uk)
17.98usd/9.65gbp/12.15eur/1947jpy (approx)

*restocked… This obscure power trio is thought to have come from Boston, where they supported The Velvet Underground in 1969, the same year their sole LP appeared. An inspired blend of tough electric blues ("Leavin' Trunk," "Antique Locomotives"), commercial songs with distinctive hooks ("What Of I?," "Pourscha Poe") and more overtly acid-influenced material ("David's Rush," "Yellow Wall"), it's an overlooked psychedelic gem that deserves far wider recognition.

THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS- THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS CD (fallout, uk)
17.98usd/9.65gbp/12.15eur/1947jpy (approx)

*restocked… This band of New York hippies is best-known for featuring the debut of Blondie's Debbie Harry. Their sole album originally appeared in 1968 on Capitol Records. A dreamy collection of psychedelic folk-pop that perfectly captures the innocence and whimsy of the 1960s flower-power dream, it's an obligatory purchase for lovers of The Mamas and the Papas or sunshine pop in general, and is presented here complete with explanatory liner notes.

MARK ERIC- A MIDSUMMER'S DAY CD (rev-ola, uk)
18.98usd/10.18gbp/12.83eur/2056jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… In Hollywood in the 1960's... you could reinvent yourself as anything … Mark Eric Malmborg, Hollywood actor, male model and music fan, who made a number of appearances on the Partridge Family and countless TV and magazine ads.....for whom it was forever 1965 and a midsummer's day on the beach... against all the expectations of his musician friends, in 1968 wrote a suite of exquisite soft psych pop songs, originally intending to find someone to cover them, as his friend ex-Animal Vic Briggs had with his instrumental "Night Of The Lions"... instead he entered the then brand-new Sound City Studios, stomping ground of The Millennium and Gary Usher among others, and made this beautiful album, catching the tail end of LA's pop innocence perfectly, just as it was gone forever.....soon afterwards, he took on a new career as entertainment director on cruise liners, and dropped from sight, as some speculated on another mystery 1960's casualty....last year he reappeared fit and healthy in LA, and was persuaded by a new generation of musicians to perform "A Midsummer Day's Dream" live at various locations... to widespread acclaim... here, for the first time, his complete 1968/69 recordings are made available once more.

NINO & APRIL- ALL STRUNG OUT CD (rev-ola, uk)
18.98usd/10.18gbp/12.83eur/2056jpy (approx)

*restocked… The classic brother/sister duo, actors, top session musicians and hitmakers with the oldies radio staple "Deep Purple" (and yes, that record *was* the inspiration for the celebrated rockers' name!) and many more. A vital brick in Phil Spector's infamous Wall Of Sound, Nino and April continued making impressionistic, Spectoresque records well into the 1960's...their switch from Atco to adventurous LA indie label White Whale seemingly freeing up their creativity no end... utilising Nino's jazz chops and consummate songwriting and April's torchy, intimate vocals, which speak right to the... um...heart of a young man, to best advantage...in their unique counterpoint style...in this (kind of!) missing link between Spectorsound and the emerging psychy softpop... classic stuff... and a listening treat!
This is the first CD collection in Europe and includes their hit singles "All Strung Out" and "I Can't Go On Living" as well as many rarities, some for the first time in stereo! It had been remastered in the usual state of the art Rev-Ola style and also includes detailed liner notes by Steve Stanley. This is a must for fans of the impressionistic sounds of Phil Spector, Jack Nitsche and Scott Walker... as well as fans of softpop and general 1960's classic pop music!

ETERNITY'S CHILDREN- ETERNITY'S CHILDREN CD (rev-ola, uk)
18.98usd/10.18gbp/12.83eur/2056jpy (approx)

*restocked… A key band in the collectable field of "Soft Pop", Eternity's Children were the first production project for the team of Curt Boettcher and Keith Olsen, renowned both together and separately for their work with such artists as Tommy Roe, the Beach Boys, and Fleetwood Mac....the two were also of course members of the legendary Milennium, whose other members feature both as session-men and songwriters… Eternity's Children were also the first project taken on by Gary Paxton's Bakersfield studio, (better known as the birthplace of country-rock) giving the band the opportunity to work with the then-unknown Clarence White and Gene Parsons, mainstays of the latter-day Byrds lineups… Despite a hit with "Mrs. Bluebird", record company politics caused their second album "Timeless" to remain unreleased (except briefly in Canada)....which has resulted in many fans never even having seen it, never mind heard it, and added to its legendary reputation and astronomical asking price. In addition there are bonus tracks taken from the two abortive attempts to start on a third album, with Boettcher and Olsen in LA, and with Chips Moman and Tommy Cogsbill at the famous American Studios in Memphis (at that time on a roll with Elvis, Dusty Springfield, and the Boxtops).... This new improved package features a host of exclusive pictures and memorabilia, together with extensive notes by "Soft Pop" expert Dawn Eden.

LEE MALLORY- THAT'S THE WAY IT'S GONNA BE CD (rev-ola, uk)
18.98usd/10.18gbp/12.83eur/2056jpy (approx)

*restocked… Lee Mallory, solo performer and member of the millenium and saggitarius, helped curt boettcher and gary usher define the Soft-pop California style. This collection of demos from 1966-70, features members of the Millennium and other friends including Randy Meisner (later of the Eagles) and Rusty Young (of Poco).

MARGO GURYAN- TAKE A PICTURE LP (sundazed, usa)
18.98usd/10.18gbp/12.83eur/2056jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… lp reissue of the original Bell Records album from 1968. Take a Picture blends Margo's infectious and highly intelligent songcraft with her absolutely unique voice -- equal parts girl group innocence and seductive torch. One of the most endearing and delicious soft rock records from its era, here's an impeccable Sundazed vinyl reissue of this '68 masterpiece, direct from the original masters.

MUSIC EMPORIUM- MUSIC EMPORIUM LP (sundazed, usa)
18.98usd/10.18gbp/12.83eur/2056jpy (approx)

*restocked… Repressed. lp version in full color, die-cut gatefold sleeve (as per the original). 180 gram vinyl. Blistering rockers with wispy melodies, Buddhist chants with wild-eyed psychedelic anthems: all part of the unique acid-folk vision of LA's Music Emporium, led by key-board virtuoso/singer Bill 'Casey' Cosby. For this first ever legitimate reissue of their supremely rare 1969 album -- now on 180 gram vinyl (with original die-cut, gatefold cover faithfully reproduced) -- we've purchased the original masters, interviewed the band, found never-before-seen snapshots, and added five cool bonus tracks.

PUNK AND POST-PUNK

TITMACHINE- WE BUILD A NEW CITY 7” (siltbreeze, usa)
4.98usd/2.67gbp/3.37eur/539jpy (approx)

*For the lucky few who were floored by Titmachines debut 7" (released earlier this yr via Meeuw Muzak) come this sophomore effort, loaded for bear & released on the Siltbreeze label. Continuing their penchant for a-side covers, this time the ladies tackle Palais Schaumburgs Wir Bauen Eine Neue Stadt (or We Build A New City if you speak only in Gods preferred tongue) & the results are as devastatingly great as could be imagined. Stripped of its NDW gloss, Titmachines reworking is more doused in raw Gueuze than refined Pilsener. In other words, them yeasts be wild yall! The flip is an awesome (& original) little jawdropper entitled 1989 & is remarkably akin to what the Shaggs might sound like tackling the Urinals Ack Ack Ack. Pressed on heliocentric black vinyl in a human(e) edition of less than one million copies, how chuffed can your summer be if you miss this chance to woggle in Titmachines primitve, urpy grock? Dont tempt fate, buy now!

FOLK, BLUES AND ROOTS

VINCE MARTIN & FRED NEIL- TEAR DOWN THE WALLS LP (sundazed, usa)
18.98usd/10.18gbp/12.83eur/2056jpy (approx)

*restocked… The rumbling baritone of Fred Neil and Vince Martin's earthy tenor...It's a vocal blend every bit as impressive as the great duos in music history: the Everly Brothers and Simon & Garfunkel -- with a Greenwich Village twist, of course. Put Neil and Martin, a pair of New York City folkie legends-in-the-making, into a recording studio with a young, pre-Spoonful John Sebastian on harmonica and Felix Pappalardi (later to produce Cream and the Youngbloods) on guitar on (an acoustic Mexican bass guitar) and magic is inevitable. This, of course, is Fred Neil in 1964, well before he just walked away from the folk scene and split for Florida and premature retirement in 1971, to remain an enigma until his recent death. Every recording by this compelling, monstrously talented singer/songwriter should be cherished like spun gold. From the original Elektra Records stereo master, Tear Down the Walls is one of Neil's first studio sessions -- and is undeniably also one of his best.

FRED NEIL- FRED NEIL LP (capitol, usa)
11.98usd/6.43gbp/8.10eur/1297jpy (approx)

*restocked… lp reissue of the third Fred Neil album, originally released 1966 on Capitol; later reissued as Everybody's Talkin'. "Surely the most balanced album of Fred Neil, this eponymous masterwork is from beginning to end a delightful listen and usually the preferred LP among fans and reviewers. It's the only Fred Neil album in which electric guitars were used. Without knowing very well why, the reverberated electric guitar that opens 'The Dolphins' and the entire LP reminds of the sensation of an infinitely peaceful landscape.

FRED NEIL- EVERYBODY'S TALKIN' LP (capitol, usa)
11.98usd/6.43gbp/8.10eur/1297jpy (approx)

*restocked… Exact repro lp reissue. Same tracks as Fred Neil, reissued here as Everybody's Talkin' in 1969 on Capitol. This was reissued in a variant title/cover to take advantage of the use of the song "Everybody's Talkin" in the movie Midnight Cowboy, as performed by Harry Nilsson.

FRED NEIL- SESSIONS LP (capitol, usa)
11.98usd/6.43gbp/8.10eur/1297jpy (approx)

*restocked… Exact repro lp reissue of the fourth Fred Neil album, originally released 1967 on Capitol... Pushed by spearing notes, Neil leans toward the microphone, mouth open to a line from chin to upper lip; the yawning exit of the well of his voice, which rises with the ease of dust motes from a deep, dark shaft, floating into sunlight and dipping back to the underworld blackness. Lyrics melt across compositional boundaries. He sings about black girls, pine trees, merry-go-rounds, death, life, lies and truth, fleshing the images into reality as his voice curves and cracks words into the microphone. --Pete Johnson
