so on a micro level (ie, not the macro level of wall street taking a serious nose dive, resulting in the loss of a trillion (!) dollars from the u.s. economy), the past week/month here at tequila sunrise has been a doozy… turns out i’m allergic to ‘all’ laundry detergent (i think), resulting in a month of rashes that were annoying enough, but culminated in a swollen eye/face over the last week. horrible? oh yes! but, after starting a regiment of prednisone and zyrtec i seem to be on the road to recovery… definitely not outta the woods yet, but much better! thanks for asking! other good news: the jack rose/dr. ragtime and his pals vinyl is on course for an early october release. the covers are done and enroute to the shop, the obi’s are done and set to ship next week, now i just need the records (the most important part i suppose), which are expected the first week of october. nice. also, fwiw, saturdays my lil’ ‘ol birthday and nothing would ease my mind, and thus making me a happy man, than some of you fine folks comin’ on down and checkin’ out some of the excellent records in this week! check it out: new and restocked titles on richardo villalobos's sei’s drum imprint; cluster and funkadelic vinyl reissue’s on 4 men with beards; danielson famile reissues; double leopards restocks; new and back catalog titles from the amazing ‘old hat’ imprint and a ton of new/restocked dance titles including a few rod lee/club kingz 12s, restocks of the AMAZING fitzcarraldo variations series (they’re limited and i doubt i’ll be able to restock em again, plus the new ones coming out soon.. and you don’t want have vol.3 w/o vols. 1 and 2? right?)… either way, good stuff abounds, so come on down!!!

TONIGHT: got this one from the enigma that is EL

Höwdy Døødy,
If you're available for some la∂-minute shenanigans, please consider corporeal representin' at Pageant between 7&9PM. I'm a-gonna honor the dead along with Daniel, Dante & Geoff at 8PM.
Mirai Yasuyama will pluck and bend a koto independently shortly thereafter. All of this to happen before and near the work of Toshimitsu Ito. I think maybe it will be fun if you're there and hope it will be exciting in a low-key no-cover-charge sort of way.

When you're sitting in a Chevy and you feel something heavy...
Barracuda! Barracuda!
Cha Cha Cha..............

diacritic,
/EL

PICKS OF THE WEEK

SIS- TROMPETA/CLARINETE 12" (sei’s drum, germany)
17.98usd/9.88gbp/12.50eur/1886jpy (approx)

*The brilliant follow-up on Sei's Drum, the label run by Ricardo Villalobos! Sar Burak aka SIS is originally from Hessen, Germany. His last release La Garua on Cecille received exciting feedback. On Trompeta/Clarinette SIS combines state-of-the-art techno, house and folk music. Following Ricardo's Enfants single from earlier this year, this is, again, a golden release! Played by: Loco Dice, Luciano, and DubFire.

RICARDO VILLALOBOS- ENFANTS 12" (sei’s drum, germany)
14.98usd/8.23gbp/10.41eur/1571jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Second pressing of the second release on Richardo Villalobos's "private expression vehicle" SED (what do you call a record label that is not a record label, anyway?). Yes, this is the Villalobos record w/ the Christian Vander (Magma) reconstruction and it's great mix of a riveting minimalist piano pulse and children singing. As they said at Phonica: "'Enfants' is for minimal techno what Mr Levan's 'Stand On The Word' is for disco and what Theo Parrish's 'Friendly Children' is for house! A future classic." "One of the most talked-about records of recent, speculated about, awaited with high and higher anticipation, finally gets released on Ricardo Villalobos' SED label. We can simply think nothing else than this INTENSE follow-up to the massive 3LP of SED00(0) -- it is leading the way to further design SED into an actual label now.

HARD ROCK AND PSYCHEDELIC

CLUSTER- SOWIESOSO LP (4 men with beards, usa)
18.98usd/10.43gbp/13.19eur/1991jpy (approx)

*Moebius and Roedelius aka Cluster, released this, their fourth album in 1976. Electronic rhythms combine with bubbling synths, piano and guitar to create sonic landscapes of pure bliss. Some of the greatest ambient electronic music ever, Cluster were on the cutting edge of German space-rock, and pioneers whose influence can still be felt today.

CLUSTER- CLUSTER '71 LP (4 men with beards, usa)
18.98usd/10.43gbp/13.19eur/1991jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius aka Cluster released this, their first album after Conrad Schnitzler (Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream) left the group originally known as Kluster, in 1971. On the outer edge of German space rock, Cluster '71 stands as a testament to minimalist 'cosmische' music. The three untitled tracks are exploratory, ever-changing pieces which focus on guitar distortion and synthesizer wails. This album deserves the many accolades it's been given, and holds up as an early landmark in the history of beatless ambience.

FUNKADELIC- FUNKADELIC LP (4 men with beards, usa)
18.98usd/10.43gbp/13.19eur/1991jpy (approx)

*this shop favorite has been stocked before, but on the westbound/edsel label outta the uk, now available in a more deluxe version via four men with beards… The 1970 debut from Detroit's nastiest, most shredding progenitors of funk-rock. Arising from the ashes of George Clinton's Plainfield, New Jersey led R&B group, The Parliaments, Funkadelic formed in the late '60s and, in addition to Clinton, included the blazing guitar of Eddie Hazel, organist Mickey Atkins, rhythm guitarist Tawl Ross, and drummer Tiki Fulwood. Though firmly rooted in funk and soul, Funkadelic incorporates a dark psychedelic element, influenced by Hendrix and Sly Stone, to create a sound that was unparalleled at the time and since. Sampled by everyone from DJ Shadow to Ice Cube, De La Soul, and the Beastie Boys, Funkadelic still sounds fresh today and is the first solid example of George Clinton's eccentric genius. Gatefold sleeve, 180 gram vinyl.

FUNKADELIC- MAGGOT BRAIN LP (4 men with beards, usa)
18.98usd/10.43gbp/13.19eur/1991jpy (approx)

*this shop favorite has been stocked before, but on the westbound/edsel label outta the uk, now available in a more deluxe version via four men with beards… 1971's Maggot Brain is Funkadelic's all-out masterpiece. Absolutely no one working in soul and funk at the time had the scope, vision, and, let's be honest, sheer lunacy to pull off the kind of record that George Clinton and his collaborators have made here. Eccentric funk jams are bookended by two of the heaviest tracks ('Maggot Brain' and 'Wars Of Armageddon') ever committed to tape. The title track, and album opener, is nothing short of mind-blowing, Eddie Hazel's guitar is a revolution brought on by Clinton, who supposedly told him to 'play like your momma just died.' An essential classic and the deepest album to come out of the Parliament-Funkadelic camp. Gatefold sleeve, 180 gram vinyl.

AVANT GARDE AND BEYOND

DOUBLE LEOPARDS- HALVE MAEN 2CD (eclipse, usa)
19.98usd/10.98gbp/13.89eur/2095jpy (approx)

*restocked, but out of print from the label… At long last (and I really mean it - this has been 9 months since the dbl CD project started) and after numerous delays and manufacturing errors this DBL CD has seen the light of day! And it was worth the wait after I was finally able to hold one of these. This digital version contains the exact same tracks as the DBL LP (now out of print) and is a mini-replica of the gatefold LP version. This gatefold CD package came out real nice and even has an insert with it (like the vinyl version, too). If you're not familiar with this release, read this great review Pitchfork gave it (an 8.2 rating): "Nigh on a decade, I have been trying to figure out what the fuck I took that fateful night. Cloyingly labeled as a 'pharmaceutical hallucinogen,' a handful of pills opened portals to the most intense, frighteningly realistic phantasms I've ever experienced. One symptom of overdose, as the Pharmaceutical Handbook explained so succinctly the morning after, was that every electrical appliance malfunctioned in my presence: the LCD displays on my watch and alarm clock were helpless brambles of blinking bars of broken time. The carpet breathed and rippled its fibers. The walls sweated. I continually had the physical sensation of having something clenched in my grip, yet looking down, my hands were always empty. I bring this trip up because I think the Double Leopards (Mike, Maya, Marcia, and Chris) might have ingested the same shit. At the very least, they show similar symptoms on their second album for Eclipse. Housed in a dark and heavy sleeve, replete with an Indian skull and foreboding forest branches, it opens into a gatefold that evokes a satellite dish-addicted Bridget Riley illusion. Halve Maen is sprawled across two heavy discs, the only format through which the finest, most oblique musical messages can properly be conveyed. I am tempted to shove this in alongside such shadowy double albums as Wickham & Young's Lake, The Dead C's Harsh 70s Reality, Charalambides' Market Square, and Twenty-Six's This Skin Is Rust, but even those gave you a little breathing room now and then; Halve Maen smothers all light from the get-go as it burrows into the bowels of the earth below. Very tactile from the first needle-drop, the everyday objects at the old loft space move of their own volition, at the edges of the feverish eyes. Household items like chord organs, plastic toys, and wind chimes suddenly lurch to the fore during 'The Fatal Affront', before all the room's paraphernalia disintegrates into the more solemn and murky affair, 'Druid Spectre'. Here appears a drum more akin to the undead pounding at a cardboard door, somehow thudding along from beyond the grave with an elongated guitar. Side B gets swallowed by 'A Hemisphere in Your Hair', which is time enough for a perm or other long scalp treatment. On this track, time is stretched and lulled until finally being rendered meaningless, and the listening brain is melted in slow undulations of sinewaves, primitive swirls of effects, bowed strings, prayer bowls, Melodica, and otherworldly drones. Small shivers of cricket-like feedback rise and fall with the slow, labored breathing of the beast, as if the inhaled pink goo from The Abyss were replaced with Graffix bong scrapings. The rattles that arise nearer the center of the spindle give the proceedings the woozy feel of an ancient ceremony coming to an end. Turns out we're only halfway there, though, and from this point forth, the travail gets veritably muddy, the group dynamic verging on unconsciousness. Discombobulation and a heavy, pervasive dread of being very lost permeates this record. 'The Forest Outlaws' spins the tape, mid-sÈance, into a paralyzing bout of self-inflicted ether damage. A blustery white-noise wind blows through the bundled layers of guitar and organ, freezing up the gears on the Leopards' zamboni right at the inner-circle of the inferno, where it's always most frigid and frightening. The last side is given over to 'The Secret Correspondence 1 & 2', plopping us into the vertiginous tides of the Dead Sea, where the silty, unseen bottom is stirred up something fierce. Cymbals are struck but quickly sink below the briny waters. Tremors of ghostly orchestras are constantly conjured by the guitars, a mass grave of vindicative strings that howl and die only to be resurrected for the finale. The instruments and processed moans of the group commune with a far more surly and slurred spiritual world than previously glimpsed, heavily sedated and hovering with a menacing glint just at the threshold of sanity. As it all slips away at record's end, I'm left questioning the mental stability and half-life of this trip. What I believed to be firmly in my grasp slithered away, a disquieting residue left behind on my hands and in my eyes and ears. Overwhelming in its morose synesthesia and downright bleary at times, Halve Maen is like those little yellow pills I popped so long ago: Ingestion will definitely fuck you up." - Andy Beta, September 16th, 2003.

DOUBLE LEOPARDS- SAVAGE SUMMER SUN CD (hospital productions, usa)
15.98usd/8.78gbp/11.11eur/1676jpy (approx)

*restocked, but out of print from the label… deep, turning, sinister industrial wrapped in existential undertow.

DOUBLE LEOPARDS/SUNROOF!/MOUTHUS- CRIPPLED ROSEBUD BINDING 2LP (music fellowship, usa)
19.98usd/10.98gbp/13.89eur/2095jpy (approx)

*restocked, but out of print from the label… This 5th installment in the Music Fellowshipís triptych series brings together two Brooklyn bands, Mouthus and Double Leopards, and the sonically entwined Sunroof! of England. While each band contributes a side to this two-LP set, the artists are brought together not just figuratively on wax, but literally, as the fourth side features all seven musicians playing together.
Double Leopards are Mike Bernstein, Maya Miller, Chris Gray, and Marcia Bassett. Like Taj Mahal Travellers before them, their long flowing jams are a gateway to other forms of consciousness. When you allow their glowing warmth to envelop you, you can be transplanted beyond the infinite to a blissful state where everything is known and everything is meaningless. Previous releases on Eclipse, Troubleman Unlimited, U-Sound, Chondritic, and their own Heavy Tapes/Heavy Conversation.
Mouthus is Brian Sullivan on guitar and Nate Nelson on drums, and they are part of a new generation of New York industrial, primitive, noise rock, taking the lead from Throbbing Gristle and Einst¸rzende Neubauten as well as Harry Pussy and The Dead C. Free, jazz-style drums pound. A loud guitar wails through layers and layers of distortion. They fracture. They debilitate. Previous releases on Troubleman Unlimited, Ecstatic Peace, and Psych-O-Path.
Sunroof! is Matthew Bower who, counting his previous pennames Pure, Total, and Skullflower, has help transform experimental noise and drone rock for over two decades with his dense psychedelic walls of sound. Both of Bowerís songs feature guest guitarists. Marcia Bassett of Double Leopards adds blissful ascension to the untitled first track, while Mick Flower of Vibracathedral Orchestra adds incendiary solos to (is it or is it not a Neil Young cover) ìCortez Tha Killa.î Previous releases on VHF and dozens of other labels.

RAFAEL TORAL- SPACE ELEMENTS VOL.I LP (taiga, usa)
18.98usd/10.43gbp/13.19eur/1991jpy (approx)

*This is the third in Rafael Toral's Space Program series of releases -- his long-term research project launched in 2004, through which he has unearthed an innovative approach and a complete re-thinking of how electronic music is conceived and experienced. Using custom experimental instruments, Toral performs electronic music concerned with "phrasing and swing" and performing strange melodies with physicality, movement and gesture in flux. The result is something you're unlikely to have heard before, a kind of alien electronic jazz. After the acclaimed, orchestral Space and the follow-up Space Solo 1, this is the first volume of the Space Elements series, each release being focused on one kind of instrument, on small settings and including collaborations. Space Elements Vol. I features Rute Praça (cello), Margarida Garcia (electric double-bass), Sei Miguel's amazing percussionist César Burago, and David Toop (flute), besides a short appearance by Sei Miguel himself. From Toral's liner notes: "Having found that jazz is the field of musical knowledge where disciplined decision-making is most developed, this music is more informed by jazz than by any other. The Space Program emphasizes articulating silence and sound, by structuring musical discourse on experimental instruments with a simple and clear sonic identity. To my surprise, I found no historical precedents to this practice, being that it draws practically no information from electronic music history (which is grounded on different thinking patterns), and it draws very little from jazz history as well, since the instruments I use are inadequate to play any music based on the Western system. I regard this approach to jazz (meaning a system of individual decision-making from the standpoint of free-spectrum live electronics) as a new and exciting field of creative possibilities. I called it 'post-free jazz electronic music.'" Space Elements Vol. I was mastered direct to metal and pressed on clear 200 gram virgin vinyl in a limited edition of 500 copies. The jacket was designed by Helder Luís at No Type and features a collage by contemporary artist João Paulo Feliciano. CD version forthcoming on Staubgold.

DOUBLE LEOPARDS- A HOLE IS TRUE CD (troubleman unlimited, usa)
9.98usd/5.48gbp/6.94eur/1046jpy (approx)

*restocked… The first widely distributed release from new noise underground faves DOUBLE LEOPARDS, and the bands most focused release to date. A Hole Is True smothers all light as it burrows into the bowels of the earth below. Chord organs, plastic toys, and wind chimes lurch along with cymbals, guitars, strings, and an assortment of menacing sounds.

COUNTRY, BLUES AND ROOTS

Here are 24 rare tracks first recorded between 1926-1936, a decade of inspired musical achievement. You'll hear old-time fiddle and banjo tunes, folk songs and murder ballads, gospel hymns, mountain blues and railroad songs, all performed by the state's top musical talent. Most tracks are reissued here for the first time on compact disc, and the music is digitally remastered for brightness and clarity. In The Pines has been carefully crafted by Old Hat's team of experts, and the entire CD package is handsomely designed in a style to match the music. Included is a 24-page, full-color booklet with rare vintage photographs, many unpublished until now, and extensive historical notes on the era, the songs, and the musicians.

17.98usd/9.88gbp/12.50eur/1886jpy (approx)

*Reissues 22 songs and tunes first recorded between 1927-1931 by string bands from Ashe County, North Carolina, a mountainous area in the northwest corner of the state once known as 'The Lost Provinces' because of its extreme isolation. The music includes traditional fiddle tunes, folk songs, Anglo-Irish ballads, comic songs, topical numbers and original compositions, all from the time period often called the 'golden era' of old-time string music. The anthology brings together for the first time the complete recordings of Frank Blevins & His Tar Heel Rattlers, the Carolina Night Hawks, the North Carolina Ridge Runners, and many more. All tracks on the CD have been carefully remastered from the original 78rpm records. A 28-page booklet presents a detailed history of the music based on interviews with original band members. Also included is a complete discography and numerous vintage photographs, many never before published. Music From The Lost Provinces is the premier release of Old Hat Records, a label devoted to quality reissues coupled with thorough historical research.

V/A- VIOLIN, SING THE BLUES FOR ME: AFRICAN-AMERICAN FIDDLERS 1926-1949 CD (old hat, usa)
17.98usd/9.88gbp/12.50eur/1886jpy (approx)

*The violin played a significant role in the early history of recorded blues, with its crying vibratos and sliding notes creating a dramatic and soulful sound. Violin, Sing The Blues For Me offers 24 tracks of this rare music, played by many of the greatest black fiddlers who recorded before mid-century. From the sophisticated style of Lonnie Johnson to the raw Delta blues of Henry Sims to the rollicking tunes of the Memphis Jug Band, these musicians demonstrate the depth and diversity of African-American fiddle music. Included are two early instrumentals by the multi-talented Howard Armstrong, also known as 'Louie Bluie,' whose career in music spanned seven decades. This unique collection presents 73 minutes of vintage fiddle music, carefully remastered from the original 78rpm records. In addition to blues, the album contains country dances, rags and stomps, folk songs and medicine show music. The CD comes with a 32-page, full-color booklet with detailed history, complete discography, and a host of rare photographs and illustrations.

V/A- FOLKS, HE SURE DO PULL SOME BOW!: VINTAGE FIDDLE MUSIC 1927-1935, BLUES, JAZZ, STOMPS, SHUFFLES & RAGS CD (old hat, usa)
17.98usd/9.88gbp/12.50eur/1886jpy (approx)

*24 tracks of rare fiddle music from the early years of recorded sound, covering a wide range of artists and styles. Playing ragtime tunes, country breakdowns, hardcore blues and hot jazz, these fiddlers cut loose on the instrument known as 'the devil's box.' Blues fans recognize Lonnie Johnson, Bo Carter, and Big Bill Broonzy as masters of the guitar, but these men were also talented fiddlers, and they're all included on this disc. You'll hear jazz from Chicago's South Side, string band music from Mississippi, and blues from Beale Street. The State Street Boys play uptown blues, while groups like the Alabama Rascals and the Dixieland Jug Blowers provide good-time dance music. And there's much, much more -- a full 74 minutes of music. Old Hat Records has teamed with Long Gone Sound Productions to capture the brilliant, clear sound of the original 78rpm records. The CD comes with a full-color, 32-page booklet that tells the fascinating story behind the music, illustrated with many rare photographs, drawings, and artifacts.

V/A- GOOD FOR WHAT AILS YOU: MUSIC OF THE MEDICINE SHOWS, 1926-37 2CD (old hat, usa)
27.98usd/15.38gbp/19.45eur/2935jpy (approx)

*Before motion pictures... before radio... before television... the traveling medicine shows brought entertainment to America. Flamboyant pitch doctors roamed the land, hawking their tonics, elixirs, and miracle cures, and with them came a host of singers, dancers, comedians, banjo pickers, blues shouters, jug blowers, string ticklers, and minstrel men. The shows died out by mid-20th century, but not before a handful of seasoned veterans left their musical legacy on phonograph records. Here are 48 classic performances by such colorful names as Pink Anderson, Daddy Stovepipe, Shorty Godwin, Gid Tanner, Banjo Joe, the Three Tobacco Tags, and many more -- well over two hours of this extraordinary music. A 72-page color booklet details the fascinating history of the medicine shows with a profusion of rare photographs, artifacts, illustrations, full discography, and song descriptions. Three years in the making, the new release from Old Hat Records is a groundbreaking survey of music from the American medicine show, that peculiar form of theater that merged entertainment with merchandising. Good For What Ails You is a two-CD set that delivers a generous mix of 48 songs, many available nowhere else, first recorded nearly 80 years ago and now remastered with digital clarity.

V/A- DOWN IN THE BASEMENT: JOE BUSSARD'S TREASURE TROVE OF VINTAGE 78s 1926-1937 CD (old hat, usa)
18.98usd/10.43gbp/13.19eur/1991jpy (approx)

*Joe Bussard has been called the 'King of Record Collectors' and there's solid evidence to justify such a title. In the basement of his Maryland home is a vast treasure trove of American vernacular music first recorded by phonograph companies in the 1920s and '30s- old-time songs, hillbilly hoedowns, hot jazz, country blues, jug band music, sanctified singing, and a whole lot more. For over 50 years, Joe has pursued this music with a passion that borders on mania, building a world-class collection of 78 rpm records -- more than 25,000 in all. With Joe's cooperation, we've carefully remastered 24 tracks of this rare music, representing the major genres in his collection. Included are classic performances by such colorful names as Seven-Foot Dilly, Gitfiddle Jim, The Grayson County Railsplitters, Fess Williams' Royal Flush Orchestra, Long Cleve Reed & Little Harvey Hull, The Grinnell Giggers, and many more. These recordings are not just historical relics, but vital and entertaining performances that have stood the test of time. Not everyone can actually visit Joe's archives, but Down In The Basement delivers the next best thing- a potent dose of this great American music. Artists include: Stripling Brothers, Big Bill, Luis Russell & His Orchestra, Dixon Brothers, Weems String Band, Blind Gary, A.A. Gray & Seven-Foot Dilly, James Cole's Washboard Four, Charley Jordan, Bill Johnson's Louisiana Jug Band, Sweet Brothers & Ernest Stoneman, Colman & Harper, Bessie Brown, Gene Autry, Soileau and Robin, Bill Brown and his Brownies, Uncle Dave Macon, Blind Blake-Charlie Spand, Fields Ward & The Grayson County Railsplitters, The Corley Family, Long Cleve Reed and Little Harvey Hull - Down Home Boys, Fess Williams and his Royal Flush Orchestra, Gitfiddle Jim and Grinnell Giggers.

CHARLIE LOUVIN- STEPS TO HEAVEN CD (tompkins square, usa)
15.98usd/8.78gbp/11.11eur/1676jpy (approx)

*Features 10 traditional gospel classics including 2 Louvin Brothers songs. The release will be followed by Charlie Louvin Sings Murder Ballads & Disaster Songs. Both albums were produced, recorded and mixed by Mark Nevers (Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Andrew Bird, Bobby Bare Sr.). Instead of hanging back at age 81, Charlie has instead chosen to challenge himself. Steps To Heaven was recorded live with a gospel choir comprised of three sisters, journeyman gospel pianist Derrick Lee, and Chris Scruggs, adding doghouse bass and electric guitar. Louvin had never recorded with black gospel musicians before, and in doing so discovered a new musical path. Charlie remarks, 'I did things on the gospel record I had no idea I could do. I'd be thinking along the way, 'How can I do things I've never done before?' And I did it.' 2007 saw Louvin celebrate his 80th birthday amidst a swirl of activity around the release of his first studio album in ten years, Charlie Louvin. Grammy-nominated for 'Best Traditional Folk Album,' the disc features George Jones, Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Will Oldham, and Elvis Costello, among others. Charlie toured and recorded with Lucinda Williams, made a video for the song 'Ira,' released a field recording of one of his many in-store performances, Live at Shake It Records, played over 100 concert dates sharing stages with Ryan Adams and Neko Case, appeared on giant festivals like Bonnaroo and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, and placed a medallion around Emmylou Harris' neck inducting her into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Charlie's self-titled album earned 4 out of 5 stars in Uncut and MOJO magazines, and sparked a bevy of great press and renewed interest in his fascinating career.

HOUSE, TECHNO AND DISCO

X-102- FLYBY 12" (axis, usa)
11.98usd/6.58gbp/8.33eur/1256jpy (approx)

*In 1992 Jeff Mills, Mike Banks and Robert Hood -- still known at that time as Underground Resistance -- released what was probably the most futuristic album in modern electronic music, X-102 discovers The Rings Of Saturn, as part of their X-10... series. The tracks on X-102 were reduced to minimal levels, looping with a marginal BMP rate, spacey and sometimes entirely without beats. This was revolutionary: listeners had just become accustomed to the uncompromising Detroit techno sound that the three of them had produced so far. Thus on the way to Saturn, they surpassed even themselves, if not a decade jump, then at least 15 years ahead of their time. Only since the Cassini/Huygen missions have we been able to gather images and awareness about Saturn, its moons, and the consistency of its rings. Jeff Mills' fascination for the planet remained intact, but to reanimate the project he had but one requirement: only together with Mike Banks. Until now this hasn't been possible because since the 1990s, both co-founding members of UR have gone their separate musical ways. But finally they've again joined forces to activate together their second Saturn mission. Flyby EP is a second 12" from the X-102 rediscovers The Rings Of Saturn project, mixed with the tracks from the original X-102 album and the new music reflecting the knowledge gained through modern space research. This is not old-meets-new: this is innovation restructured with masterly polishing -- timeless.

V/A- THOUGHTS FROM CHICAGO VOL.2 12" (eargasmic, usa)
9.98usd/5.48gbp/6.94eur/1046jpy (approx)

*Eargasmic's 10th release showcases 3 different perspectives of the house sound from 3 different producers. ''All Night Dance'' - the debut from Bjak and the unofficial Eargasmic theme song, is an ultra-smooth stomper that's reminiscent of the mid-90s loft party scene. A definite pick for all the deep heads. Tetrode Music's (and long time Eargasmic member) Specter adds his signature 5am beatdown-sound style to this 12'' with ''I Don't Need.'' On the flip, The Sun God makes a valiant return to Eargasmic with an 11 minute beat track pulled out of his archives that's, as you've guessed, complete mayhem. These are our 'Thoughts From Chicago'.

THE FITZCARRALDO VARIATIONS- GAMMA MODEL/CUCKOO DUB 12" (history clock, uk)
11.98usd/6.58gbp/8.33eur/1256jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… New label from Nathan Gregory Wilkins, London based DJ and co-promoter of the Tropical Hot Dog parties (along with Mo Morris from A Mountain Of One) and Jonny Burnip the chap behind Capracara (Soul Jazz) and Tiger Timing (Rekids / Kill The DJ). The History Clock's custodians will be devoted to modifying obscure musical relics from the distant past to better serve the eccentric tastes of the modern discotheque. Style-wise History Clock will be covering rock, primitive electronics, disco, soundtracks, psychedelia and just about anything else that feels good. "Gamma Model", a super heavy percussive rock number, has already received DJ support from Optimo's JD Twitch, Mo Morris and the Idjut Boys (the biggest record on their DJ tour of Japan last year apparently!!!). There were only 5 test pressings (and no MP3's were circulated) The flip's "Cuckoo Dub" is a quirky house-not-house, stripped down dub affair.

THE FITZCARRALDO VARIATIONS- MEDITERRANEANS 12" (history clock, uk)
11.98usd/6.58gbp/8.33eur/1256jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… The second release from the History Clock takes us back to more exotic times with two more scientifically revised musical artifacts from their extensive archives. "Mediterraneans" begins with a fierce extended percussion intro and then the bass drops, is that "Moody" by ESG? Almost, but not quite. It drives the crowd wild every time, guaranteed! From then on it's a full on Santana/Chaplin Band style Balearic disco monster all the way. 10 minutes of summer madness. "The Magnificent" is an acid rock/funk number with the most infectious piano hook and most kick ass fuzz guitar you can imagine. A heavily charged pyche / block party rocker dipped in a whole lotta L.S.D.

HERCULE- SUNDAY MORNING FEVER/LITTLE GREEN MAN 12" (hurcule, uk)
11.98usd/6.58gbp/8.33eur/1256jpy (approx)

*restocked… The most valuable and rarest Italo Disco 7'' of all time gets a timely reissue on DJ friendly 12'' vinyl for all you Disco Beardo's out there. This release has going for silly money - $500 plus- but what you have here is a remastered, cleaned up version of this quirky funk disco nugget that sounds as dope today as when it was released back in France in 1978. Limited to 500 copies. Pick this up while you can.

SEAN DEASON- ELEMENTS VOL.2 12" (matrix, usa)
14.98usd/8.23gbp/10.41eur/1571jpy (approx)

*Detroit Techno master Sean Deason returns with the second of numerous solo projects slated for this year. On Elements Vol. Two, Deason rediscovers his classic Detroit roots and channels the vintage sound he helped to pioneer. This release is more dance floor friendly than the previous installment, yet does not lose the warmth and emotionally seductive musical compositions Deason has become known for. Elements Vol. 2 opens with "Absolution," an epic yet subtly building, multi layered synth workout ala Derrick May; and closes with “Seduction,” a funky stripped down Carl Craig like groove built upon an infectious bass line. “Notch” showcases a track built simply yet amazingly from only a TR-909. The track “Teknomusik” is a fun and funky acid track with a robot vocal.

JACQUES RENAULT- RVNG OF THE NRDS VOL.6 12" (rvng intl, usa)
11.98usd/6.58gbp/8.33eur/1256jpy (approx)

*Shhhh. The dirtiest disco secrets should stay that way. Leave ‘em for the dark corners of the dance floor, the alleyway and taxi ride home, the drug-addled recesses of your next morning mind. On the Rvng of the Nrds Vol. 6 12”, Jacques Renault escorts and edits three tracks with enough sleaze to shut down an Upper West Side bath house. Mr. Renault lazer tinges a cosmic rapper’s delight, gets horn-y over some frolicking Rhodes and bass growls, and let’s the guitar sling and high hats slush over a classic tuxedo strut. Go ahead, let your freak out. The secret stays safe with us. Producer and DJ, Jacques Renault, was a post-punk Washington D.C. native who moved to Chicago in 1997 to continue his studies of viola, but in turn got a serious education in dance music. Tapping into the well established Drum n' Bass scene, he held a residency at Smart Bar and became a buyer at the legendary Gramaphone Records. This broad, raw exposure to House music lead him straight back to the classics of Disco and to it's heart, New York City, where he landed in 2002. His distinct sound and ability to gage his audience has made Jacques a stand-out amongst his peers in the elite, international sphere of electronic music. He has performed everywhere from the Guggenheim's Art After Dark event to Berlin's Rio Club - even gracing the pages of Paper Magazine's 2007 Beautiful People. Recently voted as Best NYC DJ for Paper's Night Life Awards, Jacques has held residencies at New York's famed venues Happy Endings and Tribeca Grand while currently hosting a 205 Club party showcasing an impressive line-up of weekly guest DJs. Along with friends at DFA Records, Jacques is pushing the disco conscious sweep into the new dance-punk scene. With his edits, original tracks and collaborative project RUNAWAY he has released music on the internationally acclaimed New York labels, Italians Do It Better, Editions Disco, and Wurst Edits while having EP's slated for Brennan Green's Chinatown, Cosmo Vitelli's I'm A Cliché, and the new internet only label RCRD LBL. As well as getting coveted spots on the Glimmers' Eskimo mix and the Lindstrom and Prins Thomas BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix, Mr. Renault appears regularly on Beats In Space, EVR and contributes a weekly show, Runaway Disco, to VIVA Radio.

V/A- SMOOTH EDITS VOL.4 12" (smooth edits, usa)
9.98usd/5.48gbp/6.94eur/1046jpy (approx)

*Mister Smooth steps out with 3 new edits to expand his palette. Nightlife Unlimited is a classic Muzic Box favorite; all disco, all the time. The Ron Hardy version of "Peaches & Prunes" appears on Muzic Box Classics Volume One, and Automan 2. Theo Parrish used it to create his track “Mustang 1” which appeared on a LTD white label in 2000. His version of “Bostich” takes a huge swipe at this WBMX classic extending the drum intro into a crowd stoker and encorporating parts of the LP version into the original 12” mix. Guaranteed to stoke some fires in your set. The B side is a 10 minute version of the super rare Le Cop "Rock Freak", a disco funker that’s a deal sealer for those on the edge of snagging this EP.

12.98usd/7.13gbp/9.02eur/1361jpy (approx)

*After their album A Land For Renegades and a worldwide tour where their live performance rocks the crowd, Zombie Zombie came back into the studio to deliver us "Dog Walker," a percussive song in the vein of Liquid Liquid, no doubt their more club-friendly track! The first thing you would think about when you hear R.E.M. is Michael Stipe's popular group. Not here! This is actually an (Italian?) group with the same name and a group which only released this single back in 1983 on Xanadu records. 'Monkey Star' is a classic piece of French late 70s space disco.

V/A- MUTANT DISCO VOLUME #1 CD (ze, france)
17.98usd/9.88gbp/12.50eur/1886jpy (approx)

*restocked… The Mutant Disco compilation, originally released in 2003 as a 2CD release, has now been separated at birth into two separate volumes (002A, 002B) of power-packed, explosive post-wave, post-punk, post-disco disco music. From 1978 to 1983 in New York City, a rare breed of label exploded in vibrant neon-color to forever change the perception of and push the limits to the definition of disco. The dancehall that was home to Ze's Mutant Disco revolution was ready to burst over the top with a perverse blend of over-the-top musical spectacular to complement the grainier, more underground pop. Mutant Disco acknowledged that disco was as absurdly adventurous and radical as anything emerging from rock orthodoxy. Disco alchemists like Arthur Russell and Larry Levan, labels like West End and Prelude subtly "discolated" the norm in as spectacular a way as The Pop Group and A Certain Ratio, Rough Trade and Factory. Ze's original Mutant Disco compilation came after the label's first few years of quiet artistic defiance, steadily releasing records from the U.S. and French underground resistance. The artists housed on this compilation became absolute Ze staples: Was (Not Was), Material & Nona Hendryx, Cristina, Kid Creole & the Coconuts, Aural Exciters, James White & the Blacks, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, Garçons, Don Armando's 2nd Av. Rhumba B. and Gichi Dan.
