so summer has finally arrived around here (i know, it’s august, but man it’s been an awesome spring-like summer thus far, so i declare that august 1 is officially summertime… uh huh) and with it comes a beach tote full of summer records… check em out: an amazing cd collection of rare blind blake material (the bahaman calypso singer, not the american bluesman); two (!) new sofrito specials 12s (plus restocks); chrissy zebby tembo lp reissued; a bunch of blue note lp reissues (with more blue note and other jazz vinyl expected in the coming weeks) and two new amazing cds on the soul jazz sub-label world audio foundation. good stuff, don’t miss out! also, there are no weekly updates planned for the month of august, but that’s not to imply that there will be no new arrivals, because there will. check the tequila sunrise records facebook page and/or twitter feed for up-to-the-minute new arrivals and restocks.

PICKS OF THE WEEK

BLIND BLAKE- BAHAMIAN SONGS CD (megaphone uk, uk)
19.98usd/12.12gbp/14.22eur/1903jpy (approx)

*Summer starts here with this absolute gem of a release from Megaphone. Blind Blake's first ever cd including tracks that later went on to be covered by everyone from The Beach Boys to Johnny Cash!. As label owner Stephane Bismuth explains: 'I was introduced to Blind Blake's music by Joe Loop, the man who for almost five decades hung onto Karen Dalton's earliest known recordings (1962 private recordings now known as The Loop Tapes). Joe had a cassette made from his heavy vinyl Blind Blake LP that had broken in two halves. This broken LP is now bound by Scotch tape and gets played whenever Joe needs a new cassette. I am glad I can now offer Joe the first cd ever made out of Blind Blake's LPs, recorded in the 50s for the tiny ART label.' Blind Blake was from the 30s to the 60s the singer and leader of the house band at the Royal Victoria Hotel in Nassau, Bahamas. His music was a strange mix of old island classics, more recent calypso compositions and American ballads. His musicians combined jazz guitar licks with vocal harmonies and West Indian rhythms, with the result that his recordings have an easy humor and swing that few musicians from any continent can match. This cd is drawn from a series of recordings made in the early 1950s. His band The Royal Victoria Hotel Calypsos featured Dudley Butter (guitar, maracas), Chatfield Ward (guitar), Freddie Lewis (lead guitar), George Wilson (bass fiddle), and at times Lou Adams on trumpet. Its popularity with tourists led to them being widely heard in the US, and they became an inspiration to many folk revival musicians. Josh White and Johnny Cash covered 'Delia,' Pete Seeger 'Foolish Frog,' Dave Van Ronk 'Yas, Yas, Yas,' and 'Run, Come See Jerusalem' was done by dozens of groups, not to mention Blake's influence on Harry Belafonte.

Housed in heavy manila sleeves with stickers and on 180 gram vinyl.

FRANKIE FRANCIS AND SIMBAD- FIESTA ANGOLA 12” (sofrito specials, uk)
16.98usd/10.30gbp/12.08eur/1617jpy (approx)

*The second summer scorcher from the Sofrito crew covering the hottest tropical dancefloor sounds from Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean! Fiesta Angola sees Sofrito's resident studio wizard Frankie Francis go head to head with Simbad (Raw Fusion) to sprinkle a little magic on some classic '70s Angolan sounds -- inimitable Semba and merengue rhythms with a little twist. ROCK AND PSYCHEDELIC

CHRISSY ZEBBY TEMBO & NGOZI FAMILY- MY ANCESTORS LP (hummingbird, spain)
29.98usd/18.19gbp/21.33eur/2855jpy (approx)

*shop favorite in stock on vinyl for the first time… Killer Afro-psychedelic rock made in Zambia, early 1970s! Chrissy 'Zebby' Tembo and his group Ngozi Family deliver a brutal set of fuzzed to the max psychedelic rock, with a slight African feel and English vocals. Much improved sound quality and pressing than the previous, long gone reissue of this amazing album.

JAZZ

ART BLAKEY AND THE JAZZ MESSENGERS- AFRICAINE LP (blue note, usa)
13.98usd/8.48gbp/9.95eur/1331jpy (approx)

*Exact repro reissue, featuring Art Blakey (drums), Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone), Lee Morgan (trumpet), Walter Davis (piano) and Jymie Merritt (bass)… "The sessions for Africaine -- recorded in 1959 but not released until 1979 -- saw innovative young tenorist Shorter linked with the equally forward-looking trumpet of Lee Morgan for the first time on record, set against the efforts of producer Alfred Lion to shape another commercial hit to match Blakey's breakthrough with Moanin'. What he got instead was a showcase for two hot young horn players and composers burning ideas and talent over the uniquely wide-screen Blakey percussion style, all anchored by Walter Davis' s low-key, self-effacing and supportive blues piano." -- All About Jazz

DONALD BYRD- SLOW DRAG LP (blue note, usa)
13.98usd/8.48gbp/9.95eur/1331jpy (approx)

*Gatefold exact repro reissue, originally released in 1967. Featuring Sonny Red, Cedar Walton, Walter Booker and Billy Higgins… "Slow Drag was one of trumpeter Donald Byrd's final hard bop dates. Teamed with altoist Sonny Red, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Walter Booker and drummer Billy Higgins (who takes a surprise vocal on the title cut), this quintet outing features originals by Byrd, Walton and Red along with the standards 'Secret Love' and 'My Ideal.' The music in general finds Byrd looking both backwards toward the blues and forwards toward modal music and hints of the avant-garde. A fine effort." --All Music

DONALD BYRD- ELECTRIC BYRD LP (blue note, usa)
13.98usd/8.48gbp/9.95eur/1331jpy (approx)

*Exact repro reissue, originally released on Blue Note in 1970… "Donald Byrd's transitional sessions from 1969-1971 are actually some of the trumpeter's most intriguing work, balancing accessible, funky, Davis-style fusion with legitimate jazz improvisation. Electric Byrd, from 1970, is the best of the bunch, as Byrd absorbs the innovations of Bitches Brew and comes up with one of his most consistent fusion sets of any flavor. Byrd leads his largest fusion group yet (ten to 11 pieces), featuring many of his cohorts of the time (including Jerry Dodgion, Lew Tabackin, and Frank Foster on various woodwinds). Most important are electric pianist Duke Pearson, who once again dominates the arrangements, and percussionist Airto Moreira, who in places lends a strong Brazilian feel that predates Return to Forever. Moreira also contributes one of the four compositions, 'Xibaba,' which starts out as an airy Brazilian tune but morphs into a free-form effects extravaganza; the rest are Byrd originals that prove equally imaginative and diverse." -- All Music Guide

DONALD BYRD- ETHIOPIAN KNIGHTS LP (blue note, usa)
13.98usd/8.48gbp/9.95eur/1331jpy (approx)

*Exact repro reissue, originally released on Blue Note in 1971… "Right from the stop-start bass groove that opens 'The Emperor,' it's immediately clear that Ethiopian Knights is more indebted to funk -- not just funky jazz, but the straight-up James Brown/Sly Stone variety -- than any previous Donald Byrd project. And, like a true funk band, Byrd and his group work the same driving, polyrhythmic grooves over and over, making rhythm the focal point of the music." -- All Music Guide

SONNY CLARK- DIAL "S" FOR SONNY LP (blue note, usa)
13.98usd/8.48gbp/9.95eur/1331jpy (approx)

*Exact repro reissue of Sonny's 1957 album… "Dial "S" for Sonny, Sonny Clark's first session for Blue Note Records and his first session as a leader, is a terrific set of laidback bop, highlighted by Clark's liquid, swinging solos. Clark leads a first-rate group -- Art Farmer (trumpet), Curtis Fuller (trombone), Hank Mobley (tenor sax), Wilbur Ware (bass), Louis Hayes (drums) -- through four originals and two standards, balancing the selections between swinging bop and reflective ballads. There are traces of Bud Powell in Clark's style, but he's beginning to come into his own, developing a style that's alternately edgy and charmingly relaxed. Mobley, Farmer and Fuller have their moments, but Clark steals the show in this set of fine, straight-ahead bop." -- All Music Guide

ORNETTE COLEMAN- LOVE CALL LP (blue note, usa)
13.98usd/8.48gbp/9.95eur/1331jpy (approx)

*Exact repro reissue, originally released in 1968. Featuring Ornette Coleman (alto sax & trumpet), Dewey Redman (tenor sax), Jimmy Garrison (bass) and Elvin Jones (drums)… "'Love Call,' with Coleman on trumpet, maintains a blistering intensity as the two horns are not merely supported but engulfed in the rhythmic pressure furnished by Garrison and Jones. Note particularly the passage, beginning about two thirds of the way through the track, when the two horns engage in a rapier-like exchange, each seemingly feeding on the other's insatiable energy."

LOU DONALDSON- SAY IT LOUD! LP (blue note, usa)
13.98usd/8.48gbp/9.95eur/1331jpy (approx)

*Gatefold exact repro reissue, originally released in 1968. Featuring Blue Mitchell (trumpet), Lou Donaldson (alto sax), Jimmy Ponder (guitar), Charles Earland (organ) and Leo Morris (drums). Includes the James Brown cover "Say It Loud I'm Black And I'm Proud."

HANK MOBLEY- WORKOUT LP (blue note, usa)
13.98usd/8.48gbp/9.95eur/1331jpy (approx)

*Exact repro reissue, originally issued on Blue Note in 1961. Featuring Grant Green (guitar), Wynton Kelly (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), Philly Joe Jones (drums) and Hank Mobley (tenor sax). "Mobley in some of his best company: guitarist Grant Green, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. Each of these men made dozens of recordings like this one, and in their day they were little noted except as a payday for the musicians and a momentary showcase for their fans to enjoy. But from the standpoint of forty years in the future we can see the high level of mastery these musicians had achieved. Mobley is his mellow-toned self, and he finds a perfect partner in Green, whose electrically-charged lines take Mobley's quiet fire and run with it. Green glows particularly brightly on 'Workout,' while on the jaunty 'Uh Huh' Mobley takes chorus after chorus with a subtle buildup of intensity that reveals him to be a past master of architectonics. And the rhythm section! Philly Joe hasn't lost a step here, and indeed commands more attention than on his dates with Miles. This one was all in a day's work, but what a day! A tour de force. A masterpiece." -- All About Jazz

LEE MORGAN- THE SIXTH SENSE LP (blue note, usa)
13.98usd/8.48gbp/9.95eur/1331jpy (approx)

*Exact repro reissue, Recorded 1967… "For this lesser-known Lee Morgan LP, the trumpeter was starting to stretch beyond hard bop into more modal areas while retaining his easily recognizable sound. None of Morgan's originals (which are performed along with pianist Cedar Walton's 'Afreaka' and Cal Massey's 'The Cry of My People') caught on, but the music is creatively performed by the trumpeter, altoist Jackie McLean (who was always a perfect musical partner), the obscure tenor Frank Mitchell, Walton, bassist Victor Sproles, and drummer Billy Higgins." --All Music Guide

LEE MORGAN- TARU LP (blue note, usa)
13.98usd/8.48gbp/9.95eur/1331jpy (approx)

*Exact repro reissue, Recorded 1968. "Trumpeter Lee Morgan performs two funky boogaloos, a ballad and three complex group originals on this album whose music was first released in 1980. This is a transitional date with the hard bop stylist leaning in the direction of modal music and even anticipating aspects of fusion. His sextet (which includes Bennie Maupin on tenor, guitarist George Benson, pianist John Hicks, bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Billy Higgins) is quite advanced for the period and inspires Morgan to some fiery and explorative playing." --All Music Guide

BIG JOHN PATTON- OH BABY! LP (blue note, usa)
13.98usd/8.48gbp/9.95eur/1331jpy (approx)

*Exact repro reissue, originally released on Blue Note in 1965. Featuring Blue Mitchell (trumpet), Harold Vick (tenor sax), Grant Green (guitar), John Patton (organ) and Ben Dixon (drums)… "This is 'Big' John's fourth album for Blue Note Records. In his appraisal of the album, he said, 'I feel this album moves me closer to interpreting music my way.' And he added, 'I want to go on studying. A musician cannot stand still. The mechanical power of the organ can easily delude you into projecting strength as opposed to blending it with other instruments. Control is very important and so is direction.'"

DUKE PEARSON- SWEET HONEY BEE LP (blue note, usa)
13.98usd/8.48gbp/9.95eur/1331jpy (approx)

*Exact repro reissue, originally issued on Blue Note in 1966… "Fortunately for music, as for all other manifestations of life, it has so far been impossible to homogenize temperament. Even, for example, in a time of unusual tension, such as the present, there are those who somehow sustain an open, lyrical, non-competitive approach to being alive. Although Duke's music has always been airy and spring-like, perhaps a particular reason for the sense of well-being in this album is the attractive young lady on the cover who, by the time you hear the music, will have become Mrs. Betty Pearson. There was something of her in Duke's thoughts when he wrote Sweet Honey Bee. Its sunny melody and resiliently infectious beat do communicate, as Duke puts it, 'a bit of happiness.' Considerably more than a bit. There is a dance-like buoyancy in Duke's own piano solo, and James Spaulding's flute also emphasizes the light-hearted mood of expectancy that makes Sweet Honey Bee a spirit-energizer." -- Nat Hentoff

REUBEN WILSON- BLUE MODE LP (blue note, usa)
13.98usd/8.48gbp/9.95eur/1331jpy (approx)

*Exact repro reissue, originally issued on Blue Note in 1969… "If Love Bug skirted the edges of free jazz and black power, Blue Mode embraces soul-jazz and Memphis funk in no uncertain terms. Opening with the cinematic, stuttering 'Bambu' and running through a set of relaxed, funky grooves -- including covers of Eddie Floyd's 'Knock On Wood' and Edwin Starr's 'Twenty-Five Miles' -- Blue Mode isn't strictly a jazz album, but its gritty, jazzy vamps and urban soul-blues make it highly enjoyable. Reuben Wilson has a laid-back, friendly style and his supporting band -- tenor saxophonist John Manning, guitarist Melvin Sparks, and drummer Tommy Derrick -- demonstrate a similarly warm sense of tone. While none of them break through with any improvisations that would satiate hardcore jazz purists, they know how to work a groove, and that's what makes Blue Mode a winner."

LARRY YOUNG- CONTRASTS LP (blue note, usa)
13.98usd/8.48gbp/9.95eur/1331jpy (approx)

*Exact repro reissue, originally released in 1967… "For this interesting set, organist Larry Young (the first musician on his instrument to really move beyond Jimmy Smith's soul-jazz into the avant-garde) mostly utilized lesser-known musicians from the Newark, NJ, area: Tyrone Washington and Herbert Morgan on tenors, flugelhornist Hank White, guitarist Eddie Wright, drummer Eddie Gladden, and Stacey Edwards on congas. 'Major Affair' is an organ-drums duet and Larry's wife Althea Young does a haunting version of 'Wild Is the Wind,' while the other four selections use all of the horns. The adventurous music is sometimes quite intense but also grooves in its own eccentric way, offering listeners a very fresh sound on organ." -- All Music Guide

GLOBAL SOUNDS

CONGA DE LOS HOYOS- CARNIVAL MUSIC OF EASTERN CUBA CD (world audio foundation, uk)
19.98usd/12.12gbp/14.22eur/1903jpy (approx)

*World Audio Foundation is the new label from Soul Jazz Records releasing creative, roots-based music from the four corners of the world. The music here features a riotous mix of over 50 drummers, singers and the distinctive Chinese cornet (a bit like a Cuban bagpipe!), all brought together to make a noise that Sun Ra would be proud of. The drummers play everything from car brakes and hubcaps to frying pans! This is the music of the yearly Carnival in the eastern part of Cuba performed by competing groups featuring hundreds of musicians parading through the streets through 100-degree plus heat and crowds of up to 100,000 people -- Afro-Centric rhythms, majestic songs. Recorded in Santiago at EGREM studios, the legendary Cuban state studios, this is a unique record of a fascinating part of Afro-Cuban heritage. The CD comes with accompanying text, booklet and exclusive photography in a distinctive WAF CD casing. Wild -- play loud!

THE ANCHISKATI CHOIR- POLYPHONIC VOICES OF GEORGIA CD (world audio foundation, uk)
19.98usd/12.12gbp/14.22eur/1903jpy (approx)

*The second release on World Audio Foundation features the deep sacred and spiritual vocal music from the Georgian Republic in Eastern Europe -- at the border between Europe and Asia. Dating back to pre-Christian times, Georgian polyphonic chants are uniquely complex polyphonic melodies and comprise music sung for the Georgian Orthodox liturgical services. In 2001, Georgian polyphonic singing was proclaimed by Unesco as one of the Oral and Intangible Masterpieces of Humanity. The aim of this proclamation is to help sustain cultural diversity and human creativity in the face of the perceived effects of globalization. The Anchiskati Choir is the world's leading exponent of Georgian polyphonic music. Recorded in Tbilisi, the members of the choir are both celebrated musicians and ethno-musicologists performing the task of documenting the history of this unique music. The CD comes with accompanying text, postcards and poster as well as coming in a distinctive WAF CD casing!

PICKS OF THE WEEK

V/A- LEGENDS OF BENIN CD (analog africa, germany)
24.98usd/15.17gbp/17.55eur/2338jpy (approx)

*Analog Africa presents Legends Of Benin, a collection of super-rare and highly danceable masterpieces recorded between 1969-1981 by four legendary composers from Benin: Gnonnas Pedro, Antoine Dougbé, El Rego et Ses Commandos and Honoré Avolonto, each with a sound all their own. What you are about to hear is distinctively Benin -- a thick brew of agbadja, soul, cavacha, funk, Afrobeat, and Afro-Latin sounds all mixed in with heavy traditional rhythms. Gnonnas Pedro is the king of modern agbadja: a rhythm hugely popular in Togo, Benin and Ghana, based around three pieces of percussion, each with a different tone. Traditionally a rhythm used during burial ceremonies, Gnonnas adopted and modernized it in the mid-'60s, calling it "Agbadja Modern." The track "Dadje Von O Von Non" was originally recorded in 1966 and is Gnonna's first modern rendition of agbadja. Also featured here is the crazy, kick-ass funk track "Okpo Videa Bassouo" recorded in 1973, as well as the sublimely contagious track, "La Musica en Verité." Honoré Avolonto was one of Benin's most prolific composers, releasing Benin's most successful LP in the late '70s. That album was recorded with Black Santiago, a band fronted by amazing trumpeter Ignace De Souza, another legend, with whom he recorded the Afrobeat track, "Dou Dagbe We." Avolonto has fronted some of Benin's most powerful bands and some of those "partnerships" with Orchestre Poly-Rythmo and Les Commandos are presented here. Beware -- killer Afrobeat meets frenetic funk. El Rego et Ses Commandos were responsible for Benin's first Afro-soul-funk track with the support of Ghanean singer, Eddy Black Power. The "Jerk" scene in Benin was triggered by the success of "Feeling You Got," and its infectious accordion riff. "E Nan Mian Nuku" is an Afro-Latin tune combined with a kind of bossa nova, and "Vimado Wingnan" is Benin's most sought-after funk track. Out of all the artists here, Antoine Dougbé is the least known even in Benin, but he created his own style which he dubbed Afro cavacha -- a fantastic mixture of Congolese rhumba, Latin sounds and traditional vodoun rhythms. All of his vinyl releases, especially the ones released on his own Editions Dougbé Antoine label, are incredible and have become some of Africa's most sought-after collector's items. This compilation includes a 44-page, full-color booklet with ultra-rare pictures and detailed biographies. Enjoy the mind-blowing sounds of Benin.

V/A- THE WORLD IS SHAKING: CUBANISMO FROM THE CONGO, 1954-55 2LP (honest jon’s, uk)
23.98usd/14.56gbp/16.84eur/2244jpy (approx)

*Deluxe double LP version, in a beautiful gatefold sleeve. This is the fifth release in Honest Jon's series of albums exploring vintage recordings held in the EMI Hayes Archive. This album uncovers the dizzy beginnings of the golden age of African music zinging with the social and political ferment of the independence movement and anti-colonialism, after the Second World War and the daredevil origins of Congolese rumba -- the entire continent's most popular music in the '60s and '70s. The new music grew in concert with a burgeoning night life especially in the twin capitals of Leopoldville (today's Kinshasa) on the Belgian side, and Brazzaville on the French, where humming factories lured increasing numbers of rural Congolese with the offer of a steady, relatively well-paying job. The astonishing inventions of Europe and America also played an important role in the music's development. Traditional Congolese musicians began to master imported guitars and horns by mimicking what they heard. The jazz of Louis Armstrong and the ballads of European torch singers like Tino Rossi captured the imagination of the rapidly-expanding working class as well as the familiar-sounding music of Latin America. Local musicians swapped the Spanish of the originals for Congolese languages. In his version of "Peanut Vendor," included here, A.H. Depala replaces the seller's cry of "mani," or "peanut," with a lovelorn lament for a woman named "Moni." Depala went on to land a spot in the house-band of the prestigious Loningisa studio. Others failed to gain equivalent recognition, but their music was no less impressive. Listen to likembe (thumb-piano) player Boniface Koufidilia as he makes the transition from traditional to modern in the first few seconds of "Bino," which hits you with a vamping violin while he muses about death (including that of the popular Brazzaville musician Paul Kamba). Andre Denis and Albert Bongu both echo the sounds of palm-wine brought to the Belgian Congo by the coastmen. The sweet vocal harmonies of Vincent Kuli's track were learned, perhaps, in a mission church. Rene Mbu's nimble, likembe-like guitar plucking shines on "Boma Limbala," and is Laurent Lomande using a banjo as a backdrop to "Elisa?" Aren't those kazoos, buzzing along on Jean Mpia's "Tika?" It's as if the musicians, fired up by the times in their zeal for experimental self-expression, tossed into a bottle some new elements and some old, some near and some far, and then shook it hard, to see what would happen. With insert featuring rare photographs and notes by Gary Stewart, author of Rumba On The River. Sound restoration done at Abbey Road.

HASSAN HAFFAR- THE ALEPPO SUITES 3CD (institute du monde arabe, france)
59.98usd/36.35gbp/42.15eur/5664jpy (approx)

*Hassan Haffar's Aleppo Suites consist of various poems in free form that are set to music and sung. Each suite has its own flavor. Interpretation varies according to the different schools and singers, who evoke three separate aspects of existence in love poems, bacchic songs and poems about nature. These may be used alternately, but they all express a single emotion: yearning for the beloved. Haffar's musical and vocal skills blend introspection and sensuality and these three albums confirm him to be a master of the genre.

V/A- PANAMA!2: LATIN SOUNDS, CUMBIA TROPICAL & CALYPSO FUNK ON THE ISTHMUS, 1967-77 2LP (soundway, uk)
23.98usd/14.56gbp/16.84eur/2244jpy (approx)

*Gatefold double LP version. Soundway presents the second volume in their Panama! series, showcasing the unique tropical music created in Panama during the fertile decades of the 1960s and 1970s. Panama is one of the world's great crossroads -- a bridge between North and South America, and home to the great canal that links the Caribbean and the Pacific. The canal itself was built by a huge workforce from all over the Caribbean and South America, each nationality bringing a taste of their culture and music to make up the hugely diverse nation that exists today. After soaking up the varied influences of Panama's diverse population, the dancefloors and bars spat out a heady mix that took in the raw vallenato of neighboring Colombia, the soul and funk of America, the calypso of Trinidad and the son and rumba of Cuba, all combined and re-styled in a uniquely Panamanian fashion, making Panama a central spoke in the wheel of Caribbean music. Writer and compiler Roberto Ernesto Gyemant travelled throughout the country in search of elusive records and reclusive musicians, tracking down hopeful tips and half-remembered names and addresses. Two years of digging through dusty warehouses and old radio stations in search of crackly records and dusty photos led to an exhaustive look at the musical culture of this fascinating country. If you think salsa is the sum total of Latin American music, then think again -- the hot sound of Panamanian musica tipica and calypso Español throws everything into the mix for a non-stop journey through Afro rhythms, carnival sounds, tipica soul and cumbia madness! Listen to the heavy tamborito rhythm of Los Silvertones and you'll hear where the instantly-recognizable, syncopated beat of modern-day reggaeton was born. Check the countrified re-versioning of Willie Colon's classic "La Murga" -- a perfect riposte to those that think Latin music begins and ends with Shakira. Listen to "La Escoba" by Alfredo y Su Salsa Montañera, and see that the currently in-vogue sound of cumbia owes as much to Panama as it does Colombia. Sure to be one of the sure-fire summer soundtracks of the year!

GAL COSTA- GAL COSTA LP (4 men with beards, usa)
19.98usd/12.13gbp/14.03eur/1870jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Originally released in 1969, Gal Costa's second solo album is one of the finest releases to come out of Brazil's tropicalia movement. Featuring songwriting and vocal help from Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa flows effortlessly between shredding psychedelia and smooth bossa nova. An essential record for anyone that appreciates the far reaches of Brazilian popular music. Includes the classic tracks 'Baby' and 'Não Identificado.'

ORCHESTRE POLY-RYTHMO DE COTONOU- VOLUME ONE: THE VODOUN EFFECT, FUNK & SATO FROM BENIN'S OBSCURE LABELS 1972-1975 2LP (analog africa, germany)
26.98usd/16.38gbp/18.95eur/2525jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Double vinyl version, in deluxe gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeves. Following the highly-acclaimed African Scream Contest: Raw & Psychedelic Afro Sounds from Benin & Togo '70s -- which featured several tracks by Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou, including the ground-breaking "Gbeti Madjro" -- this new Analog Africa collection now focuses entirely on Orchestre Poly-Rythmo. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou is arguably West Africa's best-kept secret. Their output, both in quantity and quality, was astonishing. During several trips to Benin, label-head Samy Ben Redjeb managed to collect roughly 500 songs which Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou had recorded between 1970 and 1983. With so much material to choose from, he decided to split it into Volume 1 and 2. While Volume 2 will be material the band recorded under an exclusive contract with the label Albarika Store, the band also "secretly" recorded with an array of smaller labels based around Cotonou, Benin's largest city, and the capital city of Porto Novo. It is those tracks (all officially licensed) that are presented here on Volume One. The producers of those labels were genuine music enthusiasts, some of them ran these labels as a part-time occupation, with very limited budgets. They couldn't afford high-quality recordings -- all they had to work with was a Nagra (a Swiss made reel-to-reel recorder) and a sound engineer -- courtesy of the national radio station. These sessions were recorded in private homes using just one or two microphones. The cultural and spiritual riches of traditional Beninese music had an immense impact on the sound of Benin's modern music. Benin is the birthplace of Vodun (also Vodoun, or, as it is known in the West, Voodoo), a religion which involves the worship of some 250 sacred divinities. The rituals used to pay tributes to those divinities are always backed by music. The majority of the complex poly-rhythms of the Vodun are still more or less secret and difficult to decipher, even for an accomplished musician. Two Vodun rhythms dominate the music of Orchestre Poly-Rythmo: Sato, an amazing, energetic rhythm performed using an immense vertical drum, and Sakpata, a rhythm dedicated to the divinity who protects people from smallpox. Both rhythms are represented here mixed in with funk, soul, crazy organ sounds and psychedelic guitar riffs.

V/A- NIGERIA DISCO FUNK SPECIAL: THE SOUND OF THE UNDERGROUND LAGOS DANCEFLOOR 1974-1979 2LP (soundway, uk)
23.98usd/14.56gbp/16.84eur/2244jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… 2009 repress. Double LP gatefold version. Lagos, Nigeria, 1974-1979: the funk & disco capital of West Africa. More nightclubs, bars, spots and dancefloors than any place along the coast from Dakar all the way to Kinshasa. Nigeria Disco Funk Special is an amazing collection of heavy dancefloor grooves from urban Lagos in the '70s -- hot and driving slices of funk, disco and boogie that show just how vibrant the music scene was in one of West Africa's most populous and culturally diverse cities. In the '70s, it wasn't just James Brown who influenced the musicians playing in the nightspots of Lagos -- the loose-structured and elongated jams that he was pioneering in America had been a part of Nigerian music much longer than that. This album is the sound of Cuban-heeled and micro-minied Lagos youth soaking up the sound of the American discotheque and putting their own inimitable twist on the proceedings. The CD and double gatefold vinyl include rare tracks from famous musicians like Bongos Ikwue & The Groovies and Mono Mono's Joni Haastrup, as well as selections from cult bands like Asiko Rock Group, SJOB Movement and Jay-U Experience. Other artists include: The Sahara All Stars, T-Fire, Voices Of Darkness and Dr. Adolf Aonotu.

V/A- NIGERIA ROCK SPECIAL: PSYCHEDELIC AFRO-ROCK & FUZZ FUNK IN 1970S NIGERIA 2LP (soundway, uk)
23.98usd/14.56gbp/16.84eur/2244jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… 2009 repress. Double LP version, deluxe gatefold sleeve. Nigeria Rock Special shines a light on the flipside of the well-documented sounds of highlife and Afrobeat coming out of Nigeria in the 1970s -- young bands caught up in the wave of psychedelic and progressive rock that was sweeping Europe and the States in the late '60s and early '70s. As time goes by, the many layers of musical output that formed around the world throughout the 1960s and '70s continues to be peeled back to reveal many welcome surprises. The explosion of rock n' roll that erupted out of the USA in the '50s fanned out around the globe from its epicenter and by the mid-1960s, kids all over the world were picking up guitars and checking themselves in mirrors. Nigeria was no exception. Spurred on by Cream drummer Ginger Baker's visits to Lagos and his band Airforce (featuring many Nigerian musicians), the sound of fuzzed-out rock reverberated around the universities and nightspots of Lagos and Ibadan. The craze that followed hit the youth and student population of Nigeria hard -- mixing fuzz guitar and heavy African rhythms with elements of Led Zeppelin, Traffic and The Chambers Brothers. Fifteen of the best cuts from the scene are available here for the first time in 30 years. Artists include: Ofege, The Action 13, The Hygrades, The Wings, Ofo The Black Company, The Elcados, Mono Mono, Tabukah "X", The Funkees, Colomach, Joe King Kologbo & His Black Sound, Question Mark, Original Wings, Tunji Oyelana and BLO.

Hokoyo! is his only LP to feature the Acid Band and is the first full length release of the Mapfumo coined musical genre, chimurenga, a Shona word meaning 'struggle.' Chimurenga is exemplified by lyrics of struggle and revolution and a guitar style based on transcribing the sounds of the traditional Shona instrument, the mbira, to the electric guitar. Crucial and historical and revolutionary, and you can dance to it. Available on CD in the U.S. for the first time ever.

THOMAS MAPFUMO & THE BLACKS UNLIMITED- GWINDINGWI RINE SHUMBA CD (water, usa)

GREY AREA

MOONDOG- MOONDOG LP (4 men with beards, usa)
19.98usd/12.13gbp/14.03eur/1870jpy (approx)

*Moondog's debut release, originally on the Prestige label, came out in 1956, long after he'd become a legendary New York City street performer. The blind Kansas native showcases his talent for the minimal and avant-garde here, with compositions driven by percussion and Japanese-inspired melodies, complimented by street sounds, recitations and animal noises. Bizarre even for today's standards, it's a wonder this was released over a half-century ago. A brilliant debut.

MOONDOG- THE STORY OF MOONDOG LP (4 men with beards, usa)
19.98usd/12.13gbp/14.03eur/1870jpy (approx)

*Originally released on Prestige in 1957, this is the third LP from NYC street performer and avant-garde/minimalist composer Moondog. Perhaps the least accessible of his early releases, this album is made up of percussive jams, usually on instruments of his own creation, street sounds, poetry and Far East melodies, despite opening with a swinging number that is, oddly, the most bizarre thing on the album. Another classic from Moondog reissued with its original Andy Warhol artwork.

MORITZ VON OSWALD TRIO- VERTICAL ASCENT 2LP (honest jon’s, uk)
24.98usd/15.17gbp/17.55eur/2338jpy (approx)

* Gatefold 2LP version. This is the highly-anticipated debut full-length release by The Moritz von Oswald Trio, comprised of members Moritz von Oswald (Basic Channel, Rhythm & Sound), Max Loderbauer (NSI, Sun Electric), and Vladislav Delay (Luomo). Through Basic Channel and Rhythm And Sound -- his collaborations with Mark Ernestus -- Moritz von Oswald first of all conjured from thin air -- then comprehensively mapped out -- the grounds of a deep exchange between real-deal Jamaican dub and classic, Detroit-style techno. The duo's accomplishment and influence are immense. The repercussions of their work within electronic dance music have been incalculable. Though a departure, Vertical Ascent retraces various signatures of the earlier styles -- the fastidious density of sound, the massive bass and detailed upper registers ("a frequency massage," Ricardo Villalobos has called the album), the stripped, stepping repetitiousness, the seriousness. The striking differences stem from the qualities of live performance (the driving, clattering percussion in particular, and the loose, improvisatory approach), the exploded palette of sounds, including a trace of steel drums, something like a cuica -- and of course, most of all -- the fresh line-up. Vladislav Delay is a drummer and electronic musician from Finland -- like von Oswald, trained in classical percussion (while the third member studied classical piano for 20 years) -- who released a landmark album on Basic Channel's Chain Reaction imprint, before working with a diversity of artists (under pseudonyms like Luomo and Sistol), from Massive Attack to the Scissor Sisters. On Vertical Ascent, he plays home-made metal percussion. From Munich, Max Loderbauer was a partner in the ambient duo Sun Electric. Behind the scenes, his work has ranged between Tresor and Can's Spoon Records. In 2004 he teamed up with Tobias Freund to form NSI (Non Standard Institut). On Vertical Ascent, he plays synthesizers, alongside von Oswald, who also contributes Fender Rhodes and additional percussion. At the heart of Vertical Ascent is a dream crossing of Basic Channel, Larry Heard and Can -- as at home with calypso as it is Stravinsky.

JANDEK- SIX AND SIX LP (jackpot, usa)
24.98usd/15.17gbp/17.55eur/2338jpy (approx)

*Originally released in 1981, following a three year gap between the release of debut LP "Ready For The House", Jandek's second album "Six And Six" stands as an incredible document of the formative stages of his cracked genius. Following the astonishingly bleak tone of the first LP, the musical elements are almost catatonic. 9 songs drift by as a series of slight variations on several desolate, untuned acoustic guitar phrases. The meditative, steady music forms a dark backdrop for some of Jandek's more vivid and poetic lyrical thoughts. Universal doom, loner dirges and sea-themed ruminations are all present. This is far and away the core of what was to come, in it's most succinct and coincidentally most haunted form. This album was also the first to incorporate an image of Jandek on the cover, both giving a face to the sounds and hinting at what would become a prolific series of incredible, disturbed albums. Vinyl for this album has been unavailable since the initial pressing ran out, and has been sought ravenously by collectors ever since. Working in direct collaboration with Corwood Industries, we're thrilled to offer this exact repress, heavyweight-vinyl edition. An astonishingly ghostly album, unlike anything else and also unique to this particular phase in Jandek's evolution, "Six And Six" is a crucial piece of the puzzle that we can only hope never gets solved completely.

MARGARET DYGAS- SEE YOU AROUND 12” (non standard productions, germany)
14.98usd/9.10gbp/10.52eur/1402jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… See You Around is the second vinyl release by Margaret Dygas and first on Non Standard Productions. This 12" is a warm combination of healthy and mellow yet solid beats combined with rough, shredded guitars. You'll be hearing round edges as much as square, bubbled sounds and psychedelic synths traveling through out both tracks. Tobias Freund was responsible for the production and the additional analog mixdown treatments. All in all, a record that follows the idea of Non Standard Productions.

MFP- MFP CD (non standard productions, germany)

PICKS OF THE WEEK

STEVE SUMMERS- SHAKE THE HOUSE 12” (clone jack for daze, netherlands)
15.98usd/9.72gbp/11.30eur/1500jpy (approx)

*The debut release from Steve Summers. Three amazing raw and unpolished Chicago tracks. Shake the House is a magic track that has been recorded on an old analogue tape recorder (hence the noise). Stereotype acid that sounds like a early 808 state jam or A Guy called Gerald. Messages From The Past and Waves are genuine old Chicago house tracks. Two tracks that are essential for everyone enjoying old Joe Lewis and Fingers Inc releases. Crazy low-fi tracks that are just a lot of fun! We couldn't stop playing this in the office... can't wait to play it from nice shiny black wax!

TYRELL CORPORATION- TOGETHER ALONE 12” (clone west coast series, netherlands)
15.98usd/9.72gbp/11.30eur/1500jpy (approx)

*The long overdue new Alden Tyrell 12''. But it was worth the wait.. a daring release actually... not the sweet Italo influenced disco as his recent releases... but a unique hybrid between electro, italo, wave and rock!! Alone Together is a massive electro wave track that is just big and bombastic and has so much power! A great track with a euphoric feeling!! This track got all hands in the air during his recent live shows!. b-side is a new unique blend ofwave and rock... guitars, real drums and... Nicole Kuperus of Adult. doing vocals!! Agressive rocking tracks that throw out al anger and frustration. 3 tracks that will create a stir. A perfect start for the new clone west coast series!

FITZCARRALDO VARIATIONS- BLACK CAT B/W ANIMALS 12” (history clock, uk)
15.98usd/9.72gbp/11.30eur/1500jpy (approx)

*The History Clock's custodians present their third outing on the label… The Fitzcarraldo Variations (aka DJ Nathan Gregory Wilkins and Jonny Burnip - the producer behind Capracara’s “King Of The Witches” on DFA) are back from another journey into the past with two red-hot
reanimated oddities. “Black Cat” is a devilishly raw glam-rock disco stomp, a seductive, pulsating combination of heavy tribal drums, massive string stabs, a huge brass section and the most infectious female vocal you’ll hear this year. Then roll up, roll up for “Animals” - an eerie, primitive electronic piece, layered with sounds effects that evoke the atmosphere of one very sinister circus… Under the big top no one can hear you scream!!! Already big with Lovefingers, Thomas Bullock, Damon Martin (Disco Bloodbath) etc.

V/A- ETHIOPIAN URBAN MODERN MUSIC VOL. 3: MORE ETHIOPIAN SOUL AND GROOVE LP (l’arome productions, france)
18.98usd/11.54gbp/13.42eur/1782jpy (approx)

*A few years ago the world discovered a unique sound coming from the distant Ethiopian capital Addis Abeba. The emotional blow was only matched by the brightness of this original and magnificent discovery. The Ethiopiques series directed by Francis Falcetto and edited by Buda Musique provides a comprehensive landscape of this subtle musical universe where local and western cultures do magnify each other. This new Ethiopian Urban Modern Music release follows the first Soul & Groove installment and keeps revealing some essential parts of the modern Ethiopian puzzle. An unequalled soul funk signature until today.

TLAHOUN GESSESSE- ETHIOPIAN URBAN MODERN MUSIC VOL. 4 LP (l’arome productions, france)
18.98usd/11.54gbp/13.42eur/1782jpy (approx)

*Although he is still completely unknown to Western audiences, for Ethiopians, Tlahoun Gèssèssè (pronounced Guèssèssè) is THE VOICE. The first-ever pan-Ethiopian star, he has embodied such nonstop unanimity since the end of the 1950s that is a role-model and a point of reference.

PUNK AND POST PUNK

COLD CAVE- LOVE COMES CLOSE LP (heartworm press, usa)
13.98usd/8.50gbp/9.89eur/1312jpy (approx)

*essentially another ‘top pick’, if it weren’t for the fact that the ‘top pick’ section is already a little top heavy. amazing record from an amazing band. get on it… Love Comes Close is the debut full-length from Cold Cave. After releasing singles on Hospital Productions, What's Your Rupture?, and Dais Records, as well as a compilation of early material (Cremations, Hospital Productions), Cold Cave is now releasing their first realized vision of modern pop music through their own publishing house, Heartworm Press. Balance is one of Cold Cave's most dominant features, laced with equal parts of romance and nihilism. Somewhere in the realms of negative hiss and out-of-body bliss, there is a peak awaiting all who enter. Wesley Elsold is joined by an orbiting line-up that includes fellow allies Caralee McElroy (of the experimental indie rock-phenomenon Xiu Xiu), Dominick Fernow (contemporary noise icon Prurient) Max G. Morton (celebrated author) and J. Benoit. Cold Cave is a force that has been compared to Erasure and Whitehouse, one that just does what it does, without forcing unnatural laws. They are a true rarity in this instamatic culture.

COLD CAVE- CREMATIONS CD (hospital productions, usa)
12.98usd/7.89gbp/9.18eur/1219jpy (approx)

*realease from a few months back in shop for the first time… Cremations is a collection of early demo/live/and unreleased tracks from Cold Cave. From the project's isolated beginnings to the recent full band line-up, the development of this singular musical entity is documented here in its icy electronic glory. From Cold Cave's infancy, sexual identity and oblique existentialism have been expressed through biting lyrics and electronic minimalism. Rarely has the human condition been exposed so brazenly as in 'Sex Ads.' Melodies, noise and rhythms clash as stories from below the surface are retold. From the demo LP Coma Potion, which featured a rugged stripped down distortion, to the suggestive Electronic Dreams tour cassette (featuring the voice of Max Morton on the track 'Heavenly Metals'), Cold Cave has developed its own brand of genre defying electronic music, without ever betraying its dark roots. Love and pornography, industrial music and traditionalism, poetry and profanity all mix together in a hedonistic cocktail of nihilistic nights and mournful mornings. Cremations collects all this work for the first and last time.

PRURIENT- ROSE PILLAR BOOK/LP (heartworm press, usa)
99.98usd/60.85gbp/70.80eur/9353jpy (approx)

*180 Page Hardcover Book with 11" Record… What separates Dominick Fernow’s Prurient project from the rest of the contemporary underground cannon is its unyielding personal subject matter. From the inception of Prurient the concept has always utilized intimate details, photographs, letters and other ephemera culled from places where most artists would choose to obscure. Prurient draws these details into focus more than ever on Rose Pillar, a 180-page hardbound book of Fernow’s collage work and text supplied by his mother Jean Feraca from her previously published memoir I Hear Voices. Feraca tells the story of the death of Stephen, the brilliant but troubled older brother, an anthropologist who was adopted into a Sioux tribe. Feraca’s text is juxtaposed with Fernow’s collages of fallen empires, plant-life and industrial decline. The imagery presented is both stoic yet strangely profound and revealing as an analogy of death.
Rose Pillar also contains an 11” vinyl LP containing new material from Prurient that is the most profound and fully-realized work of his career. Prurient is not about an attack but rather a cry for help. Prurient takes the listener to the ends of human emotion as the range of sounds swell as the light of life fades. The climax of the album is the track “spins the worlds wheel again” which contains the most densely melodic frozen drone ever contained on a Prurient recording. What’s evidenced in these recordings is a sense of loss and destruction that can’t be replaced. The sound feels more like an erosion of steady decline, ebb and flow, storms, power controlled and power unleashed. This multimedia project pries deeply through the depths of mourning on both a personal and societal scale. In conversation Prurient has exclaimed Rose Pillar to be the end of an era in both function and material. This is Prurient taken to its furthest and most satisfyingly complete conclusion. Nothing will be the same after this release as this is the ultimate result of Prurient’s process. Finality is a recurring theme with Rose Pillar and that says more than anything.

MULATU ASTATKE FEAT. FEKADE AMDE MASKAL- ETHIO JAZZ LP (l’arome productions, france)
18.98usd/11.54gbp/13.42eur/1782jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… The Ethio Jazz album by Mulatu Astatqé is a jewel of the modern Ethiopian music and a mythical album, since the beginning of Ethiopian music reissues (mainly on Buda Musique). An incredibly groovy Ethiopian record, originally from 1969-1972. Amazing orchestral 'Ethio-groove' filled with US soul, jazz, sometimes Latin and the deepest Eastern rhythms, even including some great nasty and dirty fuzz guitars. A true gem of Ethiopian modern instrumental music, which illustrates perfectly this symbiosis of strong rhythms and quality arrangements of subtle yet deep Ethiopian melodies. A must for all '60s/'70s collectors! In the Ethiopian musical landscape, Mulatu Astatke is a unique musician, composer, arranger. His real contribution consists in his action for instrumental music, in a country where orchestral traditions doesn't exist. For the last 30 years, he is the leading head of the Ethiopian musical scene. First vinyl reissue and definitely one of the most important Ethiopian music albums.

MAHMOUD AHMED- ERÈ MÈLA MÈLA LP (l’arome productions, france)
18.98usd/11.54gbp/13.42eur/1782jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… The re-release series of original Ethiopian classic vinyl continues -- the finest Ethio jazz by Mahmoud Ahmed and his band from 1975 plus two tracks from 1978. The liner notes: 'Melancholy blues, piercingly minimalist country airs, brassy, danceable urban jazz, heart-wrenching, off-key crooners: a rich and stirring patchwork of sounds, crossing Afro-beat, Latino-swing moves and Eastern arabesques (Anaïs Prosaïc).' Such were the first -- informed and enthusiastic -- opinions of the music press when the first strains of modern Ethiopian music sounded on our shores. This was in 1984-1985. Such a positive note, struck about such a country at such a time, created plenty of reverb. The country had been so thoroughly trashed by the media's feeding-frenzy, which spewed out a mix of horror and pious pity, bitter denunciation and humanitarian appeals, wallet-tickling clichés and refusal of identity. In one brutal swoop, TV-reality transformed Ethiopia into a cursed nation, forsaken by God and by man. In contrast to these tragedies, but in the same hackneyed tones, Mahmoud Ahmed's life resembles an edifying fairy-tale where destiny, talent and achievement combine to triumph over poverty, fate and the evil eye. Biography, history and legend, with the help of God, infallibly weave the lesson of merit rewarded. But who can argue, in spite of the mockery that celebrities invariably draw, when faced with one of the greatest voices in all of Africa? Once upon a time, there was a street urchin in Addis Ababa, who started off as a shoe-shine boy and went on to become one of his country's biggest stars, opening the door to Ethiopian music to Western audiences. --Francis Falceto

V/A- ETHIOPIAN MODERN INSTRUMENTALS HITS LP (l’arome productions, france)
18.98usd/11.54gbp/13.42eur/1782jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Ethiopians' deep-seated ethiocentrism, the legacy of a thousand years of history, has contributed in no small way to their music's strong national identity, particularly impervious to any African influences. Latin influences, so pervasive in the great musical centers of West Africa and the Congo, have been similarly rebuffed, despite the brilliant attempts of a musician like Mulatu Astatke. He was the first and for a long time the only Ethiopian to have studied music abroad (England and USA). In the late '60s, he brought back 'ethio-jazz', as well as a passion for Latin rhythms that was not readily shared by the Ethiopian audience. As early as 1966, he released a single and two LPs in the US entitled Afro-Latin Soul (and a third LP, Mulatu of Ethiopia in 1972), with his Ethiopian Quintet composed of American and Latin-American musicians (Worthy Records). That was three years before Fela's first American tour and six years prior to Manu Dibango's key breakthrough with the release of Soul Makossa in the Western 'pre-World music' market. All this goes to show how much the history of the African continent's musical modernity should be reconsidered in light of the Ethiopian adventure, even though this lone spark bore little relation, musically or ideologically to the musical revolutions initiated most notably by Ghanian highlife, South African jazz, Congolese rumba or, much later on, by Fela.

*shop favorite restocked… Urban Ethiopian music stands out within the African continent thanks to its creativity and originality. Whatever the shade -- pop, blues, jazz or soul -- it comes from a fusion of local musical traditions mixed with an echo of Western music. It bewitched Ethiopia during the 'Swinging Addis' decade before recently winning the favors of a well-informed audience all over the world. This first vinyl volume of Ethiopian Urban Modern Music presents some of the Ethiopian 'groove jewels' drawn from the essential Ethiopiques cd series directed by Francis Falceto and published by Buda music.

MULATU ASTATKE & HIS ETHIOPIAN QUINTET- AFRO-LATIN SOUL LP (worthy, usa)
16.98usd/10.32gbp/12.01eur/1594jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… This 1966 LP by Astatke (billed to Mulatu Astatke & His Ethiopian Quintet) isn't shaded by nearly as much African/Ethiopian influence as his later work, which was recorded between the late '60s and mid-'70s. As the title might lead you to believe, it is indeed more in the Latin soul-jazz bag than the later material, sometimes leaning toward the R&B-informed boogaloo sound of the mid-'60s. On his own compositions and arrangements (which comprise about half the LP), sometimes more exotic and African colors bubble closer to the surface, as on the eerie vibe parts he lays on 'Mascaram Setaba.' -- Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide.

*shop favorite restocked on domestic 180 gram vinyl and japanese cd with mini lp sleeve and obi… Mulatu Astatqé (also sometimes spelled Mulatu Astatke, as he is on the liner notes to this release) might be most known to international audiences through his tracks on the excellent Ethiopiques cd anthology series of Ethiopian music. Long before those tracks were compiled for that series, however, he had an American release with this 1972 instrumental album, on which he's billed as 'Mulatu of Ethiopia.' Like much of the best of the circa-early-'70s contemporary Ethiopian music on Ethiopiques, it's a fine, at times captivating blend of late-'60s American soul and jazz with Ethiopian music, resulting in something not quite comparable to anything else. -- Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide.

AFRIKA BAMBAATA- DEATH MIX 2 12” (paul winley, usa)
11.98usd/7.28gbp/8.47eur/1125jpy (approx)

*Afrika Bambaataa's and Jazzy Jay's legendary ''Death Mix'' is a holy grail, a high-water mark, and a crucial archive of the vibrant energy that Hip Hop was infused with in the early 1980's. Its release in 1983 on Paul Winley Records is a tribute to the label's resourcefulness… Here we have an incredible find, a previously unknown, unheard, alternate version of ''Death Mix'', aptly titled ''Death Mix 2'', similar to the original version in that BAM is pulling records from all over the map & innovatively segueing them into a somewhat cohesive, funky mix. More refined beat juggling & classic MC's showcased here, such as Spoonie G & The Soul Sonic Force.

*shop favorite restocked… Another crazy Clone X! Applegarden is a strange duo from Rotterdam making a weird kind of electronic funk. We had these tracks lying around in the office for at least 2 years...and we couldn't get them out of our system...so something must be right!. 'Twentyfive 6 four' and 'Armaggedon' are the two original cuts on this release...and they are just a lot of fun. The Finnish wonderboys of Putsch 79 made the official club version of 'Twentyfive 6 four.' They turned the loose original version in a tight and sharp club monster that works on every dancefloor. Probably their most uptempo dancefloor orientated remix they ever did (kind of Underworld goes disco). Already got played by several influential DJs!

Working the floor with some great melodic disco that sounds impressive on a big system. On the flip side two amazing tracks... 'Mirror Men' is a totally unexpected electronic disco funk track with some wave influences. Very classy and masculine track! 'Autumn Abyss' is a sweet and soulful track we would expect on a Kool and the Gang album, think Summer Madness style, with its incredibly warm sounding instruments. Man... this gives you shivers going down your spine! No samples used.. all real instruments, like back in the days. We are sure that if this track was old, Air would probably sample it for their new album ;-) Great versatile release from the Elitechnique boys. Very much recommended.

Sadistic Tendencies begins where 2005's Three Faces of Fear EP ended, with 18 tracks that slide like snails on the edge of straight razors, exploring the dark side of the human condition. Thematically connected, deep, dark and mind bendingly analogue, Sadistic Tendencies is both tense and full of release, sometimes brooding and encroaching at other times exploding into throbbing Synth laden Dance Floor Bombs. Superlatives aside, Sadistic Tendencies works exceptionally well as an album and is one of those rare 70 minute journey's that can be enjoyed from beginning to end – like a good horror movie that scares the hell out of you, but keeps drawing you in.

V/A- STUDIO ONE DJ'S 2LP (soul jazz, uk)
24.98usd/15.37gbp/17.86eur/2322jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Soul Jazz Records are releasing the fourth journey into the vaults of Studio One Records, the legendary foundation label of Reggae, owned and founded by Sir Coxsone Dodd. For this release we return to the roots of Reggae music -- The Soundsystem. Throughout the late 1950s and 1960s Soundsystems such as Sir Coxsone's Downbeat and Duke Reid (the Trojan), Prince Buster, Tom the Great and King Edwards played throughout the city of Kingston, Jamaica. These Soundystems were the birthplace of much of Jamaica's musical culture -- Soundclashes, Dancehall and the idea of the Toaster who sang over records -- the DJ. As ever Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd led the field, so for this release the focus is on DJ's at Studio One and features legendary toasters such as Denis Alcapone, Dillinger and Prince Far I as well as a host of rare material by lesser known artists. Also included is Count Machuki -- the original DJ -- the first man ever to speak over the mic at Sir Coxsone's Downbeat Sound System -- from where it all began. As Steve Barrow (author of The Rough Guide to Reggae/Blood and Fire Records) writes in the sleeve notes, Jamaican deejay music is the source for all Rap music: From Count Machuki talking over records on Sir Coxsone's legendary Downbeat Sound System the idea of recreating tried and tested rhythms with the DJ toasting over the top was taken into the studio to create a new style. This style would eventually travel to America when the Jamaican-born Kool Herc began playing at Block parties (a version of the Kingston Soundsystem parties) in the Bronx. Cutting up rare-groove classics for the first B-Boys to rap over, Hip-Hop was born and the DJ music that had started on the early Soundsystems of Kingston would go on to conquer the world! Studio One DJs (compiled by Mark Ainley) is the next in the series of releases where Soul Jazz Records are showcasing the music of Studio One, the label that literally defines Reggae.

V/A- STUDIO ONE DUB 2LP (soul jazz, uk)
24.98usd/15.37gbp/17.86eur/2322jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… This album features classic and rare Dub tracks from Studio One, many available for the first time in over thirty years. Studio One Dub includes the dubs of many classic tracks such as Horace Andy's 'Skylarkin', Johnny Osbourne's 'Truth and Rights', John Holt's 'Hooligan', Freddie McGregor's 'Bobby Bobylon' plus many more rare tracks. In short, this is an essential album! Studio One Records history in Dub is vast. Originating in the idea of the dub-plate as an exclusive for sound-system operators, this evolved into the version-side of singles that still exists for 99% of Dancehall singles today. The Dub/Version quickly evolved from being simply the instrumental to sonic experiments with bass, drums and the mixing desk. Many of these Dubs were created at Studio One by the great engineer Sylvan Morris. In the early 1970s, Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd created a vast set of classic dubs in the Dub LP series under the alias of the Dub Specialist. Albums such as Roots Dub, Zodiac Sounds, Bionic Dub, Juk's Incorporation, African Rub-A-Dub were made for a new generation of young DJs/toasters to perform with at sound-systems. These consequently had a huge influence on the evolution of Dancehall in the second part of the 1970s. Originally released in lavish silk-screen covers, many of these Dub albums have gone on to become serious collectors pieces.

V/A- STUDIO ONE FUNK 2LP (soul jazz, uk)
24.98usd/15.37gbp/17.86eur/2322jpy (approx)

This CD shows how American Funk influenced Jamaican artists as heavily as Soul music had been an influence in the Rocksteady era and Rhythm and Blues in the Ska period. Studio One Funk features heavyweight Funk and Reggae from start to finish. Jackie Mittoo, Alton Ellis, Sound Dimension, Cedric Brooks, Jacob Miller and many more bring you classic original Reggae Funk from American funk anthems such as 'It's a Shame', 'Shaft', Booker T and The MG's' 'Melting Pot' and 'Hang Em High' to heavyweight versions of 'Beat Down Babylon', 'Skylarking', 'Westbound Train' and many more. Most of these tracks have never been released before making it an essential release for anyone interested in Reggae. V/A- STUDIO ONE GROUPS 2LP (soul jazz, uk)
24.98usd/15.37gbp/17.86eur/2322jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… featuring legendary groups from the foundation label of reggae. Bob Marley and The Wailers, Toots and the Maytals, The Heptones -- just three of reggae's greatest groups who all started at Clement Dodd's Studio One Records, 'The University of Reggae.' Studio One Groups brings together classic artists alongside lesser-known artists and covers Studio One's musical output from the 1960s and '70s featuring ska, roots, rocksteady, dub and more. Clement Dodd's role in launching and nurturing reggae groups/singers is unsurpassed. Launching Bob Marley and The Wailers' career also meant that Dodd both housed Marley in a flat at Studio One, and employed him to check new American 45s that came out for Studio One artists to cover. From vocal training under luminaries such as Horace Andy and Larry Marshall, to musical education (Leroy Sibbles, lead vocalist with the Heptones, became the key in-house bass player after being taught from scratch by Jackie Mittoo), Studio One's success was due to Clement Dodd's ability to see talent, surround himself with it and nurture artists. Careers were launched from even minor roles at Studio One, such as Lee Perry (from handyman to singer and producer), Prince Buster (from security to singer and producer), and so forth. Studio One Groups are at the heart of the label's success. The sweet three-part harmonies, so close to the heart of Jamaican music, can be heard throughout every stylistic change of reggae music -- ska, rocksteady, roots and beyond, all featured here. Featuring artists: The Wailing Souls, Righteous Flames, The Gaylads, The Bassies, The Mad Lads, The Clarendonians, The Consummates, Carlton and the Shoes, The Viceroys, The Maytals, The Heptones, The Royals, The Gladiators, Bob Marley and the Wailers, The Stingers, The Cables, The Ethiopians, The Purpleites and The Silvertones.

V/A- STUDIO ONE LOVERS 2LP (soul jazz, uk)
24.98usd/15.37gbp/17.86eur/2322jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Lovingly compiled, this album features only the finest Lovers from Jamaica's finest label. From blues parties in London, Birmingham, Bristol etc., Lovers Rock quickly became one of the UK's finest-ever musical movements. Sweet harmonies, soulful reggae, love songs -- the key ingredients of Lovers Rock -- were all based on the revival of many of the classic rocksteady harmony groups of the late '60s and early '70s, such as The Heptones, Carlton and The Shoes, Larry & Alvin, The Paragons, that Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd's Studio One and rival Duke Reid's Treasure Isle label produced hit after hit as they fought for dominance in the dancehalls of Kingston. As well as these classic harmony groups, this album also features fine contributions from many of the reggae greats -- Horace Andy, Alton Ellis, Bob Marley and The Wailers, Delroy Wilson -- all artists who became stars at the legendary Studio One Records which Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records, describes as 'The University of Reggae.'

V/A- STUDIO ONE ROOTS VOL.3 2LP (soul jazz, uk)
24.98usd/15.37gbp/17.86eur/2322jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… featuring a killer selection from the classic roots period at the foundation label of reggae. Roots music flourished in the 1970s as Rastafarianism, Black consciousness and self-determinization became the most important aspects of reggae music. Bolstered by the international success of Bob Marley and Burning Spear (both who began their careers at Studio One), roots music became the major musical development of reggae in the 1970s. Coxsone Dodd and Studio One's connection to Rastafarianism had begun long before the arrival of 'roots music' as a distinct genre that arrived at the very tail end of the 1960s. By the start of the 1960s, Coxsone Dodd was making his way to Count Ossie's Wareika Hills Rastafarian compound to hear Rastafarian drummers play whilst the Skatalites' front-line horns -- Tommy McCook, Don Drummond, Johnny Moore would jam alongside. Similarly, Count Ossie would appear during Sir Coxsone's dancehall sessions, performing live at the height of the evening. This is the third in the series of Rastafarian inspired music from Studio One, and features classic foundation artists alongside some seriously rare tracks from the label. With the involvement of the crack studio house bands -- be it the Sound Dimension, the Soul Defenders or the Brentford Road All-Stars -- as well as Clement Dodd and Studio One's seriously high quality control, these tracks are all a healthy addition to the pantheon of roots music at Studio One.

V/A- STUDIO ONE SKA 2LP (soul jazz, uk)
24.98usd/15.37gbp/17.86eur/2322jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Studio One Records and it's in-house band The Skatalites defined ska music and made Jamaican music famous throughout the world. This compilation features classic vocal and instrumental tracks from The Skatalites, Bob Marley and The Wailers, Delroy Wilson alongside super-rare tracks from the likes of Ken Boothe, The Maytals, Jackie Mittoo, Tommy McCook and many more. Independence came to Jamaica in 1962. The musical soundtrack to this era was the upbeat, energized ska, the first truly Jamaican music. ska music and Studio One are synonymous with each other. Whilst ska was only one style of Reggae that Coxsone Dodd and Studio One Records would release in it's forty year history -- with Rocksteady, Roots, Dancehall, Dub and much more still to come -- ska was the first and defined Jamaican music as having it's own identity throughout the world. The inspiration for the rhythm of ska came from the Southern US Rhythm and Blues records of the 1950s. Coxsone Dodd had initially encountered this music while working as a migrant farm worker in Florida. It was here that he first decided to start a Soundsystem on returning to Jamaica and began importing R'n'B records that would soon become the staple musical sound of any Kingston dance. The main R'n'B artists of the day were Roscoe Gordon, Wynonie Harris, Amos Milburn, Fats Domino, Louis Jordan. Listening back to these records it is possible to hear the roots of this new Jamaican sound.
Young artists such as The Wailers, The Ethiopians, The Maytals and Delroy Wilson all began their careers making joyous uptemposkaa at Studio One. The group that accompanied all these artists were The Skatalites. The Skatalites were Tommy McCook, Roland Alphonso (tenor saxes), Lester Sterling (alto sax), Don Drummond (trombone), Johnny Moore (trumpet), Jackie Mittoo (piano), Jah Jerry (guitar), Lloyd Brevett (bass) and Lloyd Knibbs (drums). Whilstskaa music became easily identifiable by playing on the off-beat (usually the piano and guitar) The Skatalites brought their wide influences into the music.skaa could include Modal Jazz, Pop, Jump Up R'n'B, Rastafarian and Burro music, US Western and film soundtracks, Easy Listening and even classical music. Consequently this CD includes proto-Rastafarian music such as Don Drummond's 'Addis Ababa' alongside interpretations of UK mod songs (El President is based on Georgie Fame's 'Yeh Yeh').You will also find Latin-tinged tunes such as 'Don Cosmic', jump-up Gospelskaa from the Maytals, Eastern-flavoured modal instrumentals such as 'El Bang Bang' . The young singers who The Skatalites backed in turn also brought their own influences into the music. The youthful Rude Boy culture became the lyrical subject of manyskaa songs whether you were for them or against them. By 1965skaa music was over. The musical mood of the country was changing. Independence had brought Jamaica a new set of issues and the music had to reflect this, heralding the arrival of Rocksteady, which had a slower beat and was based on the emerging Soul music of American artists such as Curtis Mayfield. In 1965 The Skatalites split-up to form two new groups -- The Soul Brothers who became the new house-band at Studio One and Tommy McCook and the Supersonics who moved over to rival Duke Reid's new Treasure Isle studio.skaa, however, had made it's mark and Jamaican music was now known throughout the world. And despite the brevity of their time together (just over a year!) The Skatalites left behind a legacy of literally hundreds of classic recordings.

V/A- STUDIO ONE SOUL 2LP (soul jazz, uk)
24.98usd/15.37gbp/17.86eur/2322jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… More classic Reggae from Jamaica's most important label ever! Following on from Studio One Rockers, this second journey into the vaults of Studio One tells the story of the important link between American Funk and Soul and Jamaican Reggae. Ranging from music taken from the mid-1960s (and the arrival of rock steady) through to the beginning of the 1980's, Studio One Soul features versions of US Funk and Soul hits (many rarely heard before) from some of the many classic artists who recorded at Studio One. American Soul music has always been an important influence on Jamaican Reggae. The beginning of the Jamaican recording industry at the end of the 1950s started with Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd (owner of Studio One) and a group of select in-house musicians (originally The Skatalites) recording their own version of American R'n'B . Playing on the off-beat this music became ska and a new music was born. As American R'n'B progressed through Funk, Soul and Disco, Jamaican music was going through it's own musical changes from rock steady through to Reggae and Roots music. The house-band at Studio One known variously as The Skatalites, The Sound Dimension, The Soul Vendors, The Brentford All Stars and The Brentford Disco Set recorded on a daily basis behind all Studio One vocalists as well as recording instrumentally in their own right. These musicians are as important to the development of Jamaican music as were the equivalent musicians at Motown, Stax, Muscle Shoals and Philadelphia International in the US. Some of the main musicians were Jackie Mittoo (Keyboards), Pablove Black (Keyboards), Roland Alphonso (Sax), Lloyd Brevett(Bass), Leroy Sibbles(Bass), Johnny Moore (Trumpet), Lloyd Knibbs (Drums) and Leroy 'Horsemouth' Wallace(Drums). Soul singers such as Curtis Mayfield and The Impressions (Queen Of The Minstrels) had a profound influence on Jamaican artists and many other US artists were constantly re-interpreted and re-worked. Artists such as Aretha Franklin (Respect), Charles Wright (Express Yourself), King Floyd (Groove Me), Otis Redding (How Strong) were all very popular in Jamaica in the 1960s. At the end of the 1960s Black Consciousness became an important part of American Soul music. At the same time many Jamaican artists were starting to look to their roots. Many artists would shortly become involved in Rastafarianism. The 'conscious' lyrics of American Funk and Soul again struck a chord with Jamaican artists. 'Message From A Blackman' (originally by The Temptations), 'Is It Because I Am Black' (Syl Johnson) are examples of this. Through the 1970s Soul/Disco artists such Barry White ('Can't Get Enough' and 'Deeper and Deeper') and The Detroit Spinners ('I'll Be Around') became the flavor of the day.

Solitude is a long voyage of the best space disco around. Super cool bassline with spacey synths and out of this world effects. Neon is a freighting track with spooky atmospherics and erie melodies. The badd-ass drums make this a floor banger for sure. Tac-Tic is a crazy little disco nugget to please the headz that are into more adventurous sounds. Amplified Orchestra provide more unhinged disco party on this ep than most dj's pack in one hour!

*shop favorite restocked… The only member once again brings the heat! This time pairing the high energy disco of Sylvester and '80s German techno group, Two Of China, remaking Dangerous Liasons' 'Los Ninos Del Parque.' Remake of a remake. 'U R A Star' a 13 minute edit epic; 130+ BPMs of adrenaline. The track is sped up just a bit from the original, with vocal parts and strings spliced, looped and laid right on top of each other to extend the hype. Then, feed the whole two channel track through a flanger. On the flip, more of the same, minus the now-cheesy vocals of the original vocal version. The beats are still fresh today, though. Beats taken from the vocal and instrumental version put through the Member's blender.

MAELSTROM- ENTER THE COSMOS 12” (solardisco, uk)
11.98usd/7.37gbp/8.56eur/1113jpy (approx)

*shop favorite restocked… Hot on the heels of Edits EP#1 and with his Mindless Boogie release currently doing the rounds, Maelstrom drops his debut original production (well, sort of). Fast becoming one to watch, these remixes look to cement the arrival of Solardisco and, indeed, Maelstrom whose fan-base is growing by the minute. Pete Herbert really needs no introduction. As L.S.B he gave us the infectious 'F.O.G.' and 'Original Highway Delight,' as Reverso 68, 'Tokyo Disco' and 'Piece Together,' while, more recently, his Disco Deviance release has been carving up dancefloors worldwide. On the flip and already aired on Tim Sweeney's Beats In Space show with support from the usual suspects on the nu-disco scene, the Sankt Gøran & Erik Sidung mix has the potential to be this year's big crossover smash. Fusing said disco sound with some great Italo piano hooks, this will be soundtracking the summer for many a DJ! (again)…
